End o' week musings

TGIF! And I mean it! Tomorrow I intend to take a nice, long afternoon nap. But then, that's getting ahead of myself.
Last Friday Linda and I went to the Dockside Grill in West Covina to see The Subs. We both enjoyed a bowl of soup- hers clam chowder, mine lobster bisque. Things were going well until Linda asked the band to play "Sweet Caroline," she didn't know that she might come to regret her request. I knew how it would go and it did- they launched into the song straightforward and it went downhill from there with word substitutions, audience participation and even the bartender ringing a big brass bell. After that Linda would meekly offer a song suggestion with a plea for it to be played "right." But she said she would definitely return to see The Subs again, so that's says it all.

Saturday my friend Byron (the creator of the Naughty Mickie comic strip you see here) came over for lunch and lots of talk and laughter. After he left, I gussied up and hit the road out to Universal Bar and Grill in Universal City to catch singer/songwriter/guitarist extraordinaire Joe Walla perform an acoustic set. He hasn't done that in ages and was delightfully on top of his game. The crowd didn't want him to stop and this included a lot of people there who hadn't heard him before. I hope he does some more of these unplugged shows because they're different and good!
Tuesday I had dance practice and Wednesday I went to the James Gurney lecture at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Gurney is the author and illustrator of the Dinotopia series, a collection of books which relate tales from an island where man and dinosaur live together in harmony. Gurney's work is wonderful and he also does landscapes and other painting. He explained his work process from beginning to completion and shared other humorous stories. It was definitely worth attending, plus he signed my book.
Last night... oh my! It was the night of nights- the Doo Dah Queen Party and Pre-Doo Dah Soiree at Hyperion Tavern hosted by one of my favorite celebs Tequila Mockingbird. The crowd filtered in, slowly filling the venue to catch Ukelar Winter, Count Smokula, Tequilabilly and several other acts, including Almase Arabesque.
"It's my night, I can dance if I want to," I teased, walking in with my crown and scepter. Then I saw the stage- it was long enough, but it wasn't even sidewalk-wide deep. This would be a challenge. Valerie and I inspected the stage and decided what the heck, we'd give it a go. And the audience cheered us on as we danced through four numbers- two rocking sword choreographies, a sultry, sexy pop number and a semi-traditional drum solo. We managed to not fall off the stage or bang into each other and were as graceful as possible in the limited room. We must have done well because we received nice compliments the remaider of the evening.
Tequilabilly was really good too. Tequila has a warm and wonderful voice and her guitarist, Billy, is very talented- they make a good pair. Count Smokula offers accordion spiced songs that you would least expect, including "Paint It Black" and my favorite, "Oops I Did It Again."
I'm late with my blog, not to mention everything else, today because I was a guest on Horror Kung Fu Theater, a cable show on Time Warner which is shown throughout Los Angeles and surrounding areas. I showed up in proper Queen attire and was briefly interviewed about the Doo Dah Parade and then I danced with my swords and veil. It was fun! I hope it spreads some joy on this rainy day.
I will be appearing at the Fret House in Covina 7:30 p.m. Saturday for open mic night and next Friday from around 8 p.m. on I will be dancing at McGinty's Gallery at the End of the World for 1st Friday Art Club. There, we will have live drummers and a extra dancer, my very beautiful friend Tamara.

Photos to share this week are my friend Erik Stein's motorcycle and me with Queen Erika at the Doo Dah coronation.

In rotation this week: Orange Sky, 69 Eyes, Offspring, Brides of Destruction, Tribe of Gypsies, Aerosmith, Racoon, Monster in the Machine and Tha Riks.

My thought is important this week- take time to recharge. I have been burning the candle at both ends. Working, holiday shopping, dancing, singing, making appearances, etc. And everyone at my job has been coming down with colds. I have been taking my vitamins as always, but have started bolstering myself with some extra zinc. I have received a ton of invitations for this weekend and over next week, but I'm going to be very picky-choosy because I know I need to keep up on my zzzzs so I don't get sick. Saturday after yoga, it's fuzzy socks, soft blanket and a nap. Maybe you should do the same...

Keep on rockin'

Venue change for New Astroturf show on Sunday

due to a private function at Cafe 322 this Sunday, 12/2, NEW ASTROTURF's lunchtime gig has been moved to THE BUCCANEER! this means you can have Nikki the bartender make you one (or three) of her fabulous Bloody Marys and not have to leave the premises for several hours! It also means no one under 21, and they don't serve food (other than chips and pork rinds), but you can bring in food and enjoy it there. The new UGO's deli is open next door and I told them I'd be sending people in there on Sunday - how convenient! Just please clean up after yourselves so I don't get in trouble with Tony, and maybe he'll let us do this again!

VENUE CHANGE!! SUN. 12/2 - Have lunch with NEW ASTROTURF & FRIENDS @ THE BUCCANEER LOUNGE IN SIERRA MADRE, 1:30 - 4:30pm. Full bar, no cover. Bring your pizza, Thai food or get a sandwich from the new deli next door. Acoustic folk/rock, classic country. Steve Vargas, Deanna Cogan, Paul Dorn, Peter Burke and special guests.

Jesse Malin at Hotel Cafe Dec. 5

JESSE MALIN PERFORMS @ Hotel Cafe in LA Weds, December 5th.

Jesse Malin has been a busy man since releasing the critically acclaimed Glitter in the Gutter in March. With a full UK and European tour under his belt in early May which included a BBC 2 Radio Sessions performance, Jesse returned home and boarded the Death & Taxes Magazine Bus for a two month US headlining tour. Somewhere in between he found time to record two videos, first for the VH1 hit "Don't Let Them Take You Down (Beautiful Day!) followed by the Bruce Springsteen duet "Broken Radio" which also saw The Boss guest in the video. Jesse performed Late Night w/Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson plus performed on various morning shows across the country from Minneapolis to San Diego to Boston. Jesse leaves it all on the stage night in and night out, lying down with the crowd for a "Solitaire" sing along, signing autographs at the merchandise booth after the shows and enjoyed the traditional hang with fans in respective cities where he shared stories while dj'ing on the local jukebox bar until the wee hours. During the tour, Jesse got a new electric Les Paul guitar and painted it with the letters PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) and wrote a blog about the meaning of the PMA approach to life on his MySpace page weekly.

The U.S. portion of the tour was scheduled through to early August, followed by a lengthy itinerary heading back to the U.K. for V-Fest appearances. He collapsed in Minneapolis, diagnosed with a staff infection in his thorasic spinal chord, and hospitalized for several weeks back in New York City. Jesse had caught a very rare, life threatening bacteria that someohow got transmitted through a bug bite that appeared on his spine. Forced onto intravenous anti-biotic for 8 weeks and into a body brace, he retreated indoors for the summer and completed the writing of a new record. He completed preparation for musical arrangements for a cover record he's been wanting to record that ranges from Johnny Thunders to Elton John and The Hold Steady to the Ramones, and held bedside meetings in with video directors for the making of the U.K. video single "Tomorrow Tonight" and for the U.S. single and video release of "In the Modern World", both from his current album. He hooked up with Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls, who joined on for fall touring, on drums. He brought on a new keyboard player, Allan Fox. He shot for a Hartke advertising campaign and had dinner with Alice Cooper. He wrote a heartwrenching eulogy for CBGB's owner Hilly Crystal, published in the Village Voice.

Upon getting a "pass go and get out of jail free card" from the Doctors, Jesse flew to Austin on September 14th to perform at the yearly Austin City Limits Music Festival, to play alongside a massive array of great bands and artists (Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire, Joseph Arthur, Pete Yorn, Bjork, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, and many many more). Songs from Jesse's performance can be viewed on www.ACLFest.com Blue Room website. The punk folk NY Troubadour is resuming worldwide touring beginning Oct. 3. Dates include make-up shows in cities cancelled over the summer, support with Ian Hunter, headlining dates in the U.K. and a 5 city tour of Spain, support with Blues Traveler back in the States in late November/early December, and culminates with a New Year's Eve Bash show in Detroit at the Institute of Art.

Jesse's critically acclaimed new album Glitter In The Gutter is out now Adeline Records. Dan Aquilante of the New York Post gives Jesse his due in a recent live review of a sold out Bowery Ballroom show, remarking that "Malin is the successor to Lou Reed's crown as the lord of The City's underground." Rob Harvilla of the Village Voice calls Malin's Glitter In The Gutter "Album Of The Year" material raving that the album is "Truly excellent...A Replacements replacement to savor while you're obliteratingly drunk and gaping vacantly at the giant spinning cube in Astor Place."

"{On Glitter In The Gutter} There are memorable, megatuneful adrenaline shots like 'Prisoners Of Paradise,' and two slow ones - the Springsteen-assisted 'Broken Radio' and the rather gorgeous 'Aftermath' - stand tall. Tracks like that are what iPod playlists are made for." Rolling Stone

“How this guy stays so under the radar baffles me. One of the best rock-oriented singer/songwriters out there.” USA TODAY

Jesse is well now and armed with new songs, random covers, a great new band, and more of that PMA for the upcoming tour dates scheduled. Go to www.jessemalin.com or www.myspace.com/jessemalin for more detailed information on the tour.

From First to Last in Pomona

From First To Last at The Glasshouse in Pomona on 12/5.

From First to Last
From First to Last recently gave fans an exclusive preview of the their revamped line-up and new album with the November 14th world premiere of “Two As One” on MySpace. The new song racked up more than 100,000 plays in just its first 24 hours of being posted. “Two As One” offers a taste of the band’s third full-length album, From First to Last, which is set for release in early spring of 2008. The hard-rocking new single is still available for a limited time as a stream on the band’s profile page: www.myspace.com/fftl.

The group is currently in the midst of a tour with Envy on the Coast, Pierce the Veil and Four Year Strong through December 9 in San Francisco, CA. Earlier this year, the band co-headlined a US tour with Hawthorne Heights and provided main support for Deftones in Canada, in addition to playing a headlining slot on NJ’s Saints & Sinners festival.

Signed to Suretone Records in early ’07, From First to Last recently completed their first release for the label with veteran producer Josh Abraham, who has logged time behind the boards with Velvet Revolver, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds To Mars and many more. With mixing duties handled by Brendan O’Brien (Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Velvet Revolver), the album is set for release early next spring. The band recently returned to the core line-up of their early days, with co-founding guitarist Matt Good stepping up to handle lead vocals and co-founder/guitarist Travis Richter and new permanent member/bassist Matt Manning handling additional vocals. Drummer Derek Bloom remains behind the skins.

My American Heart to play L.A.

MY AMERICAN HEART will play the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles on Tuesday, December 11 at 9:30pm.

After spending the summer on the Vans Warped Tour, San Diego, California’s MY AMERICAN HEART is again touring the U.S., this time on their “California Love Tour” headlining trek. These December dates in support of their second album HIDING INSIDE THE HORRIBLE WEATHER (Warcon Entertainment) wrap with a San Diego hometown show on December 15.

Hiding Inside the Horrible Weather was produced by James Paul Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Underoath, The Academy Is…) and features the lead single “The Shake (Awful Feeling).” The metaphorically titled disc--implying that beauty inherently lies in all things--is a striking mix of hooky, driving rock, engaging pop sensibilities and introspective acoustic ballads. Kerrang! called the music: “gleaming Californian pop-rock with a sharp tongue” (November 24, 2007).

"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" opens Saturday

Crown City Theatre Company is producing a musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” with book and lyrics by Gary Lamb, music by William A. Reilly, and directed by Thomas W. Ashworth at St. Matthews Lutheran GLBT Church in NOHO from December 1st through December 15th.
Several Actor’s Equity Performers will adorn the stage from Melissa Bailey (Madame de Gondelaurier) who has appeared on Broadway to local favorites Bill Mendieta (as Quasimodo) and Chris M. Allport (as the Prosecutor). Others involved include: Amy Bloom (Esmeralda), Harris Matthews (Claude Frollo), Johnny Ferreti (Clopin), Rachel Howe (Fleur de Lys), Derek Knight (Phoebus), Alissa-Nicole Koblentz (The Recluse) and Chris Kolb (Pierre).
One of the unique aspects of this production is that it is being performed in the sanctuary of St. Matthews Lutheran Church complete with vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows and choir loft – all imagined to be the soaring arcs, parapets and bells of the famed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
Another unique aspect is that Crown City has implemented a “PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN” policy for all performances, so there is no excuse not attend.

WHERE: St. Matthew’s Lutheran LGBT Church 11031 Camarillo Street in NOHO.
WHEN: Gala opening: Sat. December 1st @ 8p.m.Continuing Fri. and Sat. at 8pm and Sun. at 7p.m.Open ended with no performances Dec. 16th thru New Year’s Day.

Learn about Harmonic Alignment

For years people who listened to Mark Romero's music acknowledged how great his music makes them feel. But he didn't fully understand the significance and the science behind this statement until a former consultant from NASA explained to him that his music has frequencies in it that actually harmonize the flow of energy in the body and brain resulting in a state of peak mental and physical performance.

Now he better understands the science behind his theory of harmonic alignment and how and why it produces beneficial changes that occur as people listen to music.

Harmonic Alignment is a state where the body, mind and spirit are in an optimized energetic state. When we are in this harmonized state there is an instant increase in strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination and balance. There is also a reduction in stress and anxiety, improved learning, focus, intuition, creativity and concentration.

In essence, he helps people tune up their lives using music. The process is extremely powerful, effective, long-lasting and quick acting.

He will be speaking and demonstrating the practical applications of his theories of Harmonic Alignment in two Los Angeles area events. He will be demonstrating the instant physical effects of the music at these programs.

Holiday Tour at the Castle Green: From Parlor toPenthouse!

Join us on Sunday, December 2nd for a special Holiday Tour at the Castle Green. One of Pasadena’s last historic hotels is now the private residence of designers, musicians, collectors, artists, and others. Those interested in history, creative interior design and cultural heritage will see the original old world charm of this city treasure.
Built in 1898, the Castle Green is normally closed to the public. While trained docents will be available, you may also walk at your own pace, through the corridors and visit 15 individual apartments, all differently interpreted, and many decorated for the holidays.
On the ground floor, you’ll see the Grand Salon, Palm Ballroom, Moorish and Turkish Rooms. Farther along, you’ll visit the Bridge, 7th floor Penthouse, and various painters’ studios. A 12’ Christmas tree in the Main Salon, decorated with thousands of lights and topped with peacock feathers, will provide entree for visitors entering the old hotel lobby. Enjoy seasonal music, holiday tastings, sweets, tea and coffee, which will be served throughout the day.
Some of the famous individuals associated with the Castle are Charles White, noted African-American artist who had his studio in the Bridge, and Marcel Duchamp, French artist closely associated with the Dada and Surrealism movements.
Among the many films shot here are The Sting, The Last Samurai, The Little Rascals, Wild At Heart, We Were Soldiers, and television shows including CSI Miami, Cold Case, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alias, the X-Files and a recent episode from Brothers and Sisters.
The Tour is sponsored by the Friends of the Castle Green, a nonprofit support group committed to the preservation of this landmark building. An exhibit of the recently completed roof re-tiling project funded by the Friends, and other projects, will be on display. All of the Tour proceeds go to the Friends of the Castle Green for the ongoing restoration of the building. All contributions are tax deductible.

Jan Kubiac releases debut effort

Jan Kubiac is a Maine-based singer/songwriter, whose musical interests began at a young age with her exposure to the quiet singing and playing of vocalists and musicians like Stan Getz, and Joao Gilberto. Now, whether she's playing folk guitar ballads, lullabyes, or uptempo songs with a full band, you can hear their influences in her rhythms and melodies. Kubiac's songs evoke lyrical images as she shares her intimate memories and visions with the listener.
Kubiac's debut album on the smasheasy® label offers up two sides of her talents: her smoky vocals and bossa nova-influenced folk sounds that her friends and fans love, along with a collection of songs written with children in mind which includes a suite of lullabyes. Two years in production, with songs from her debut album now available on all major European and US dowload sites and airplay reaching from the US to Germany, Jan's music is finally gaining a worldwide audience. Songs like "Todavia," take you on a musical journey to the Gulf of Mexico, while "Big Chunk," with its full band Instrumentation surprises you with a pop-edged beat.
The album features Aly McKnight, who was involved in the project from its inception, and whose flute melodies draw emotion out of every song she plays. Trumpet player Mark Tipton's highly skilled and light-hearted harmonies blend wondrously with Aly's flute, or stand alone complementing Jan's acoustic guitar.
Several of the songs were recorded live in the studio by this trio of accomplished musicians, and the resulting recording reflects their musical synchronicity. Lead guitar and drums by studio musician Pat Malia, bass by renowned producer/engineer Ted St.Pierre, and backing vocals, Celtic harp, keyboard and chimes by internationally acclaimed New Age recording artist Conni St.Pierre round out the ensemble.

Noise Pop Festival set for February

The Noise Pop Festival returns in 2008 from February 26 to March 2. Over six nights, Noise Pop 16 will take over the best-loved venues in San Francisco, to host unforgettable performances by Magnetic Fields, The Mountain Goats, The Gutter Twins and dozens of other important indie rock, electronic, punk and cutting edge musical artists, transforming the city into an almost week-long celebration of the finest that the underground and not-so-underground has to offer, nationally and locally.
2007 marked Noise Pop’s 15th year as San Francisco’s premier celebration of independent music, art, film and culture and 2008 is the festival’s sweet 16 party. Established in San Francisco in 1993, Noise Pop started as a one-night event featuring the best underground rock bands that the Bay Area could dish up. Flash forward to 2007 and the Noise Pop Festival is another beast entirely. With live music as it’s focal point, Noise Pop has developed into full-scale cultural happening, adding gallery art shows, a music-themed film festival, educational panel discussions with musicians and music industry professions, an indie designer trunk sale and a number of planned as well as spontaneous shin-digs.
Stephin Merritt’s Magnetic Fields will headline two shows at the beautiful Herbst Theatre as part of Noise Pop in support of their long-awaited new album, “Distortions.” Lo-fi legends The Mountain Goats will also perform three shows at three different venues during Noise Pop.
Another exciting addition to Noise Pop 2008 is The Gutter Twins, the anticipated collaboration between Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan. Dulli and Lanegan have been working together periodically since 2000. In July 2007, Pitchforkmedia.com announced that "two of the alt-rock era's greatest frontmen," had signed to Seattle label Sub Pop. The Gutter Twins will perform for Noise Pop in support of their debut album “Saturnalia,” currently set for an early 2008 release.
Omaha NE's Cursive will also play Noise Pop 2008. The band is currently readying the release of "Bad Sects" the second single from the band's acclaimed 2006 album, "Happy Hollow" which includes a user-submitted remix of the song and a string arrangement by Olafur Arnolds.Other artists confirmed for Noise Pop include Kelly Stoltz, Tilly & The Wall, Capgun Coup, Blitzen Trapper, Fleet Foxes, Fu Manchu and Saviours with more being added to a festival roster that will include over 100 bands. More Noise Pop performers will be announced in the weeks to come. As usual for the festival, nationally-known artists will share the stage with the best new bay area talent from opening night on February 26 through March 2 at legendary San Francisco venues such as Great American Music Hall, Bimbo's, Café Du Nord and The Bottom Of The Hill, The Independent, Mezzanine, Rickshaw Stop, 12 Galaxies and others.Events such as South by Southwest and CMJ cater to bands shopping themselves to the music industry. Noise Pop differentiates itself by maintaining a commitment to fans, while remaining industry-friendly is different. The idea is to bridge the gap between fan and artist by producing shows featuring the best of what’s out there in an intimate setting with affordable ticket prices. Noise Pop is the space where tomorrow’s favorite new music mingles with today’s tried and true greats. It’s a true indie music-lover’s celebration.
Some of the finest bands in America – and now some of the biggest - have played Noise Pop including Modest Mouse, the White Stripes, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, The Shins, Jimmy Eat World, The Flaming Lips, The Decemberists, The Faint, Guided By Voices, Nada Surf, Hot Hot Heat, Devendra Banhart, Frank Black (The Pixies), Grandaddy, Neko Case, Cibo Matto, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Stephen Malkmus & Jicks, Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü), The New Pornographers, Polyphonic Spree, Rilo Kiley, Feist, Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), and Spoon..

Prog indie rockers 3 to release special edition effort

Woodstock, New York based progressive indie rockers 3 are eagerly awaiting the release of the special edition of The End Is Begun. The special edition is going to feature a cover of the Pink Floyd classic “See Emily Play” as well as a bonus DVD. The DVD will give those who are yet to see 3’s mind blowing live show a sneak peak. The praise for 3 continues to pour in from all over the place including from their musical contemporaries. See what Travis Stever, guitarist for Coheed and Cambria has to say about 3, “It is hard to come by a band that combines numerous musical elements into an appealing combination. 3 is one of those bands. For their newest album The End is Begun they have created an album that shows they are truly like no other. Each member of the band is an amazing talent on their own. Together they create a sound that will blow your balls off. Enjoy!”

“3 have it all! Great musicianship, funky grooves, catchy melodies....and their latest CD is my favorite yet! I dig this band so much; they were at the top of my list for the upcoming Progressive Nation tour.” Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater

“One of the great things about having 3 open for Porcupine Tree is how much they made us raise our own game - every night their incendiary 45minute set gave us an almost impossible act to follow. Simply one of the best new live acts around.” Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree

"3 is so talented and different from everything else out there, plus they are awesome live. Great record, definitely in my top 5 of the year!" - Jenn Rivera Programming Coordinator Music Choice Metal

“3 - The End Is Begun... Challenging, Melodic, Engaging! This is the band (and album) that can change your perceptions of what an intelligent rock band could, or should, sound like. Building on their previous releases and moving in new directions, this is the most exciting album of the year! And there is nothing else like them out there! The time is now for 3!” -Scott Hamilton / Programming and Operations Manager / Clear Channel Radio, Florida Keys

3 will be hitting the road next year with the “Progressive Nation” tour which features fellow prog masters Dream Theatre and Opeth.

Be sure not to miss the boat on this amazing band and this incredible release. Be first in line to pick up 3’s The End Is Begun: Special Edition when it hits stores on February 19th, 2008.

Tommy Lee and DJ Aeroto perform at Crash Mansion

What causes an internationally celebrated rock-icon to sublimate his ego and surrender to the irresistible allure of synthesized beats, dirty electro basslines, and searing, loopy melodies? Rockstar and former Motley Crue drummer, TOMMY LEE, and his partner, DJ AERO, hit Downtown Los Angeles on their North American Electro Mayhem Tour on Saturday, Dec. 22 at the new Crash Mansion LA. Doors open at 9 p.m. and tickets are $20.00 and available by going to www.wantickets.com or calling Crash Mansion Box Office at 213-747-0999.
Having achieved the pinnacle of success as a rock ‘n roll drummer with the Crue and his other bands, Rock Star Supernova and Methods Of Mayhem, LEE decided in 2000 to team-up with fellow band-member, DJ AERO (born CHESTER DEITZ), to work towards a relentless schedule of electronic music DJ-gigs. Their debut at WMC 2004’s Ultra Music Festival in Miami took the rock and dance music worlds by storm.
It’s 2007 and the Electro Mayhem Tour has gathered full-steam, led by agent JOHNNY MARONEY of CEG Talent; LEE/AERO bring their multi-sensory, audiovisual performances to clubs across North and Central America.
Lest critics doubt LEE’s sincerity for club culture after such a high-profile career in rock, he says, “I touched turntables and that was my turning-point! MIXMASTER MIKE and Aero inspired and taught me a lot about DJing. I started DJing and realized you could do all these things, musically.”
Far from having any downtime, LEE/AERO installed a full, virtual studio on their tour bus, thus allowing them the ability to personalize each night’s show. Endless hours in the recording studio also brought fruitful production sessions, and original dance music tracks are primed for release.
When AERO isn’t touring with LEE, he is a web-designer and runs a lucrative, million-dollar online retail business. Says AERO of the life he now leads, “Whenever I get booked to travel to Dubai, Toronto or Zurich to DJ, I pinch myself. It’s a blessing, and I’m always appreciative.”

TOMMY LEE & DJ AERO are sponsored by Pioneer Pro DJ. Their live setup consists of: two Pioneer DVJ-1000 DVD-players – used with either the Pioneer SVM-1000 audio-video mixer, or an Edirol V2 video-mixer and a Pioneer DJM-800 mixer – two Pioneer CDJ-1000MK3 CD-players, a Pioneer EFX-500 effects unit, two Apple Mac Book Pro laptops, an Alesis control pad, an M-Audio Oxygen O2 keyboard, and assorted live-performance software including Serato Scratch LIVE 1.7.2, Ableton Live 6.0, and Artillery 1.3. Their live shows are a frenetic whirlwind of synthesized beats and high-energy sound.

ABOUT CRASH MANSION:In a space once occupied by the historic Myron Ballroom, New York’s Bowery Restaurant group has transformed this 1940's swing club into a state-of-the-art, three-part performance haven. A 10,000 square-foot main room accommodates headliners with lofted ceilings and a fully digital sound room, while two adjacent rooms--the Burn Lounge and the Foyer Gallery--cater more to low-key performers and the local artist scene. With five bars, three distinct atmospheres, and a fully operative kitchen, this 1200-capacity industrial chic club caters to the rich diversity of art and music in Los Angeles. Crash Mansion is located at 1024 Grand Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90015. Phone: 213-747-0999. For more information, go to www.crashmansionla.com or www.myspace.com/crashmansionlosangeles.

17th Pygmy to hold record release party

WHAT: The 17th Pygmy Record Release Party & Holiday Spectacular with the Spirit Girls
WHERE: Dangerous Curve, 1020 E. Fourth Place, LA, CA 90013, 213-617-8483
WHEN: Saturday December 15, 2007, 7:00 p.m.
COST: $10.00 Suggested Donation

After a possibly symbolic 17 year hiatus, influential L.A. postpunk band 17 Pygmies has regrouped under the name of The 17th Pygmy. Now with "Ballade of Tristram's Last Harping" (Trakwerx) they release their second CD of 2007, a follow up to the well-reviewed "13 Blackbirds." Stillled by guitarist/provocateur Jaxon Del Rey (late of Savage Republic), the new name reflects the growing influence of late 1960s psychedelia and early1970s classic rock.
Of their live show, Lucid Culture raves "If it's possible for a sometimes quirky, often transcendentally beautiful art-rock band to slay, [the 17th Pygmy] slayed, bringing to mind other great, artsy jangle bands like the Church, the Byrds or Fairport Convention. Mixing major and minor chords, verses that built slowly to towering refrains and then subsided again, the band held the audience spellbound. If the live show is any indication, the new album must be amazing. This is a band you should get to know."
Appearing with The 17th Pygmy at their record release and holiday spectacular is The Spirit Girls, multimedia artist Marnie Weber's experimental pop combo whose Noh-style masks and ghost girl gowns lend an eerie visual impact to their avant-prog compositions. Billed as "something of a cross between Sonic Youth, King Crimson and 17th Century French Romantic paintings," the Spirit Girls present songs from their recent Trakwerx release "Forever Free."
Reviewing the album, Jack Rabid of The Big Takeover says "Not quite goth, this still conjures the post-Bowie/Eno Berlin collaboration '80s, when dark-chilly post-punk employed murky, doomy edges against textural beauty, like The Cure, Red Temple Spirits, Strange Times Chameleons, and Shiva Burlesque. This is a tribal ritual and child nightmare about scary hobo clowns, haunted horses and worried bears; music that makes you feel strange."

Take an Esotouric literary bus tour

December 15: The Birth of Noir: James M. Cain literary bus tour

WHAT: The Birth of Noir: James M. Cain's Southern California Nightmare tour
WHEN: Saturday December 15, 1-5pm
COST: $55 (or get a four-tour season pass for $190)
HOLIDAY DISCOUNT: 2-for-1 seats for anyone who rode with Esotouric this year
WHERE: Departs from Philippe the Original downtown, tour covers Glendale andHollywood locations

Southern California, 1931: Amongst the burgeoning urban sprawl built atop bulldozed orange groves and the bitter realization that you can't eat the sunshine, recent emigré James M. Cain found a kernel of truth and his voice. In December Esotouric, the eclectic bus adventure company that explores the secret heart of LA, features a series of dark literary tours, honoring the work of Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain and culminating with two sold-out, James Ellroy-hosted Christmas week tours.
"The Birth of Noir" celebrates the life, work, myths and passions of hard-boiled American novelist James M.Cain through his best known books, "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "Mildred Pierce" and "Double Indemnity," and how their screen adaptations created a unique American genre: Film Noir.
As a holiday gift to their fans, Esotouric is offering 2-for-1 seats on the Cain bus to anyone who rode one of their tours this year.
How did East Coat sophisticate Cain go from editor of "The New Yorker" to populist novelist accused of writing dirty books? The tour explores the writer's life and work with a focus on his time in Southern California, where his observations on Malibu, Hollywood, Pasadena and the low rent 'burbs of Glendale are as provocative today as they were seventy years ago. The tour will also cover the artisans who transformed Cain's tales into movies, including Billy Wilder, Raymond Chandler, Joan Crawford and Lana Turner.
"The Birth of Noir: James M. Cain's Southern California Nightmare" is a complex portrait of a fascinating character who was seduced and transformed by his time in the Southland, a hard working movie industry professional who sank into drink and despair, ultimately a uniquely Californian artist.
Hosted by Esotouric's Richard Schave, the tour draws on Cain's essays, short stories, novels, films and the memories of his friends and colleagues to paint a portrait of LA in the 1930s and 1940s through the eyes of the writer. The tour spans Hollywood to Glendale and along old Route 66, and includes illuminating visits to Forest Lawn Memorial Park (site of the funeral of Mildred Pierce's "other" daughter, Ray), the Glendale Train Station where the "Double Indemnity" murder plot played out, and the punchline to a Billy Wilder joke so subtle, it's taken 63 years for anyone to get. Get on the bus to share in the laughter and the pathos of Cain's So Cal.

Billy Howerdel of A Perfect Circle to lead new band

Lead guitarist, singer and songwriter Billy Howerdel – founder and producer of multi-platinum group A Perfect Circle, has stepped out as lead vocalist and guitarist for new band, ASHES dIVIDE signed to Island Records. It was announced today by Antonio "L.A." Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group.
Howerdel's long-awaited first solo album, which has been the subject of countless blogs and chatter for more than a year at his website (http://www.myspace.com/ashesdivide ), will be released March 2008. The album title will be revealed in the months ahead.
Howerdel produced and engineered the new album sessions in Los Angeles. He played all guitar, bass, and keyboard parts, and was joined by APC drummer Josh Freese. Mixing took place underway in London by innovative Brit producer Alan Moulder. Moulder is known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, My Bloody Valentine, as well as fellow Island band The Killers' two albums.
New Jersey-born Billy Howerdel is a self taught musician who started out doing theatrical stage lighting. Took to the road as a guitar technician for many bands, among them David Bowie, Guns N' Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and Tool. Although Howerdel and Keenan became friends years earlier while crossing paths on tour, it was not until the recording sessions for Tools 1996 album Ænima that the two planted the seeds which would later become A Perfect Circle circa 1999.
A Perfect Circle released three groundbreaking and critically acclaimed albums: their RIAA platinum debut, Mer de Noms (May 2000) which entered at #4 Soundscan with 188,000 copies and placed three songs on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts ("3 Libras," "Judith," and "The Hollow"); the platinum Thirteenth Step (September 2003) which debuted at #2 Soundscan on 231,000 first week sales (with the #1 Rock track and video "Weak and Powerless," followed by "The Outsider" and "Blue"); and RIAA gold eMOTIVe (November 2004), an overtly political album released on Presidential election day, primarily cover versions of political material including John Lennon's "Imagine," Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks," Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," Black Flag's "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie," and more. Two weeks later, the CD + DVD package aMOTION was released, a collection of all their video clips on one disc, and nine remixes of songs on the other disc.

The Shondes to tour in support of debut effort

“Ready for an indie break out....radical politics, inspired riffs, textured harmonies and pure sex appeal“ – Curve Magazine

“Seamlessly fusing art and politics” – Punk Planet

“Hard-driving, politically savvy rock ‘n roll” – Flavorpill

“A powerful new sound” – Heeb Magazine

The Shondes, a Brooklyn, NY quartet taking its name from the Yiddish word for “shame” or “disgrace” has launched a winter tour to preface the release of its debut album, The Red Sea produced by Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, They Might Be Giants, Book Of Knots) in early 2008. The Shondes’ dramatic rock has been compared to Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith and Rasputina, but audiences tend to marvel at the band’s urgent, genre-breaching live sound. The Shondes -- Temim Fruchter (drums/vocals), Louisa Solomon (bass/vocals), Ian Brannigan (guitar) and Elijah Oberman (violin/vocals) -- quickly gained popularity in its native city thanks to its complex melodic song structures combined with rich, intertwined vocals.

The Shondes’ songwriting fuses the various musical traditions of feminist punk, classical, Jewish and queercore, while the band’s vocal melodies move effortlessly from anthemic to haunting -- textured by the distinct qualities of each of their voices. The result is a unique sound that is both heartbreaking and hopeful. The high energy of its live shows bring audiences along for the ride, with audience members often singing along and swaying to the punchy rhythms and soaring melodies.

From its formation, The Shondes has maintained a rigorous tour schedule including two national tours, a Midwest mini-tour, regular east coast dates, and festivals such as North by Northeast and Homo A Go Go. The group has shared the stage with indie luminaries Electrelane, Erase Errata, Amy Ray, Mecca Normal, Joe Lally of Fugazi and Lesbians On Ecstasy, among others. The band also organizes events, often in partnership with local activist organizations, such as the Jews Against The Occupation Chanukah Ball and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project’s Valentine’s Day Party. The Shondes’ debut album, The Red Sea will be released on January 8, 2008, following its nationwide winter tour.

Check out Brittney Elizabeth live

Fresh, young singer/songwriter Brittney Elizabeth has become the go-to-gal for setting the musical backdrop to some of television’s most talked about programs, with a pair of songs from her debut album, Breathe In finding their way onto nearly a dozen television series. Music Supervisors have gone positively Elizabethan, lusting over the songs, “Last Song For You” and “Los Angeles With Open Arms”, both co-written by the 20-year old singer and scheduled to lend their emotional impact to an impressive array of shows including upcoming MTV’s The Real World: Hollywood, The Paper, My Super Sweet 16, Engaged and Underage, The Diary Series, Trick It Out, Cribs, High School Stories, Newport Harbor and True Life. Other shows that will be including Brittney’s songs include Lifetime Television’s American Psychic Challenge, E! Entertainment Television’s top rated show Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Oxygen Network’s Bad Girls Club.

Musical placement on TV, especially on the pop cultural institution MTV, has become the recording industry’s most sought after commodity. Television is the “new” radio, becoming THE place to be heard for any artist looking to break in the marketplace. With labels and artists vying for airtime, Elizabeth’s achievement is all the mightier having risen to the top of the stack without major label backing.

The talented young singer’s debut release, "Breathe In" is a songbook of poetry and prose revealing the wishes, dreams and heartache of a girl coming of age. Elizabeth’s voice rises over poignant confessionals that cut straight to the heart – delving directly into the core of the relationship dynamics. At once sassy and sexy, but also refined and idealistic, Brittney Elizabeth’s music captures the very essence of young womanhood. And very soon, she will be heard broadcasting from sets in homes throughout American neighborhoods. Please welcome Brittney Elizabeth into your living rooms - a breath of fresh air in music today.

Here's some of the best shows around compliments of my friend Sierra Madre Sue (apologies to Sue and Billy, my computer didn't like your photo, sorry):

Guitar player extraordinaire BILLY BURKE has a studio next door to where I work in Sierra Madre, where he records, rehearses and gives guitar lessons. Some afternoons I am amused by the sounds of some kid playing AC/DC or Pat Benatar licks over and over! If I stay a little later in the evening, I can tell it's an adult with more discerning taste & I get to hear some cool old blues stuff. By night, Billy trades off blazin' guitar leads with band leader Willie, in LIGHTNIN' WILLIE AND THE POOR BOYS. You can see them this Saturday, Dec. 1st at the BUCCANEER LOUNGE and on New Year's Eve at Cafe 322, but I'll remind you about that in a few weeks!
