Los Angeles-based four-piece Y LUV--led by singer/guitarist FREDDY JANNEY and rounded out by SAM NARDELLA (lead guitar), MAX CARVER (bass) and MARCELLO DUBAZ (drums)--display smart indie-pop sensibilities while delivering a sound uniquely their own. The band has played throughout Los Angeles over the last year and most recently performed at USC’s hugely popular “Battle of the Cans.” They have two Los Angeles shows confirmed for the New Year—the first on Saturday, February 7 at Ground Zero and then Thursday, February 12 at On The Rox (above The Roxy).
Y LUV’s songs are built around one main, simple philosophy: “I write what I know,” says Janney. “My lyrics are based on situations I’ve been through in my life which hopefully make them easily relatable and enjoyable for the listener.”
Y LUV’s tracks are produced by Lior Goldenberg, who’s previously mixed and engineered albums for artists ranging from Andrew WK and Har Mar Superstar to David Crosby, Ziggy Marley and Alanis Morissette. The Y LUV songs range from the undeniably catchy “The Push” to the ballad “Let’s Waste Our Teenage Years” to the indie rock-meets-hip hop “Your Kind” to the anthemic “Let the Beats Pound.”
Of his songwriting, Janney says: “I’m most inspired by the rhythm of a song or the beat. I think this comes from the fact that I’ve been playing drums for so long. For any upbeat song I write, I want there to be a beat that will get people to dance and have a good time. Listening to recorded music is great but there is nothing like seeing live music and watching the whole crowd dance.”
