Hip-hop and hard rock are two genres of music born out frustration with the system and a do-it-yourself attitude. They both court controversy and are both a way of life to their fans. Most importantly, when done well, both genres have the ability to change the musical world.

It is hardly surprising, therefore, that New York five-piece A Broken Code are ready to set the world alight with their unique blend of all that is best about rap and rock. The collision of styles has been done before - most successfully by the likes of Ice T’s Body Count and Kid Rock – but A Broken Code take the heady blend to new heights.

The band releases a new EP – ‘Anthems of the Oppressed’ – on June 30 and the six tracks promise to be a landmark in the history of East Coast rap.

Each track has an intensity rarely found in the more commercial recordings of established artists. They are funky, passionate, angry and intelligent all at the same time.

The title ‘Anthems of the Oppressed’ could not be more appropriate. These are songs for and by the common man- the young people abandoned by society who can only find a voice through their music. They are about shared experience, personal relationships and the hope for a better world… They are also irresistibly danceable!

Backed by portentous basslines, heavy-metal guitar riffs and funky drum licks, these songs combine all that makes both rock and hip-hop such incredible and visceral musical forces.

And to prove its credentials as a live band capable of matching its performances in the studio, A Broken Code is embarking on a tour to promote the record.

The album launch performance takes place at The Studio, Webster Hall, 125 E 11th between 3rd Ave & 4th Ave St, New York, NY 10003 on Tuesday June 30. Doors open at 9.30pm with a $10 cover charge – strictly 19 and over only.

Other shows on the ‘Unity in the Community’ tour includes dates at Fordham Road & Grand Concourse in the Bronx (June 21); Marcus Garvey Park Ampitheatre, Manhattan (27); Pelham Bay Park, Bronx (July 11); East Side Drive River, Manhattan (18); Washington Square Park, Manhattan (25); Roy Wilkens Park Band Shell, Queens (August 1); Prospect Park, Brooklyn (9); and Giant Stadium – parking lot show, Rutherford, NJ (September 19).
