"Public Enemies" soundtrack now available

Grammy Award®-winning artists and Academy Award®- winning composer Elliot Goldenthal join forces to create one of the most compelling soundtracks of the year for the new action-thriller from Michael Mann, Public Enemies. The moving score, paired with songs by performers of tremendous caliber such as Billie Holiday, Otis Taylor and Diana Krall – particularly her cover of the classic “Bye, Bye, Blackbird” – make this compilation one that is not to be missed. It will be released on Decca Records nationwide June 30. The film opens July 1.

In Public Enemies, Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp) – the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number-one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the public. This marks Goldenthal’s second collaboration with Mann, following their critically acclaimed work on Heat in 1995.

Elliot Goldenthal (Frida, Interview With the Vampire, Michael Collins) is the man behind the music and once again reminds the world why his work is internationally recognized. The large scale orchestral score echoes the feelings and sensibilities of the Great Depression Era as well as the high style of 1930s Chicago. This concept can be heard in every note as it follows the rise and fall of one of the country’s greatest outlaws. Goldenthal has written works for concert hall, theater, dance and film. He has been quoted as saying that he is pleased that in recent years, the lines between traditional concert music and orchestral film score have begun to blur. In fact, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his acclaimed opera Grendel in 2007. One of the music world’s most accomplished and respected composers, Goldenthal’s contributions have made the soundtrack a story in its own right and a shining example of just how powerfully music lends itself to film.
