End o' week musings

This week has been a long, wacky and rocky ride. I left you as I was going to the Pasadena Showcase House of the Arts Empty House Party. This is where you get to see the residence selected for the Showcase House of Design event, which supports music programs for area children. I got to meet and speak with the designers about their plans for the rooms and try some eclectic dishes, plus sip a nice glass of wine.

My favorite part of the house is probably not going to change too much. There's a guest house which looks like a Japanese tea house and is flanked on two sides by a large koi pond. But wait, there's more. The pond also goes under a window into the living room area of the house. Who needs TV when you can gaze a perky colorful koi? The little (and big) fish were quite friendly and seemed to enjoy coming up to the pond's surface to get a peek at me too!

Saturday I went to the Coffee Gallery Backstage (http://www.coffeegallery.com/ ) in Altadena to see the Paula Nelson Band. Paula Nelson is the daughter of Willie Nelson, but she has forged her own career and sound. There's definitely country in there, but there's also rock and blues. She was beautiful and gracious and her band was terrific. I got to meet Paula after the show and, just like after our interview, I felt as if we could be good friends. Definitely make a point to catch her show if you can.

Wednesday evening I attended an autism support group meeting in Whittier for a story I am working on. We often think of autism as affecting children, but it is a lifelong situation. I learned a lot about the sensory aspects of the condition and was moved by the parents' stories of their lives with their autistic children. My story is going to be just the tip of the iceberg on this broad subject, as I will be concentrating on how parents and others make the world more sensory-friendly for those with autism.

Last night I got a thrill- I saw my drummer Ric Sarabia on television!! He was on "CSI: Las Vegas." The story was about an FBI agent who gets murdered and twists with looks into an underground ultimate fighting outfit, a prostitution ring and more. Ric plays a fighter's doctor, but he's also the big, bad guy in the episode. He looked and acted great. Kudos, my friend, I hope this leads to other terrific opportunities. And remember, you promised me the exclusive when you hit it big.

Tonight I'm planning to go to the Pasadena Playhouse to catch the opening night of "Stormy Weather" starring Leslie Uggams. It's based on the biography of Lena Horne and features a ton of great tunes. You can read my interview with Leslie at http://www.sgvn.com/. While there, you should also check out my story on the local band Soulspeak. They boast three paramedic/firefighters in their group and offer up Latin-fused rock that will get you groovin'.

Saturday I'm going to head to Rude Dog in Covina to see Trash Daddy. I so dig them! The band plays rockin' country blues with a trailer park twist. They're always fun to watch and hear... and even to dance to. Come out and join me for some fun.

I will be spending Superbowl Sunday with my friends Tom and Carin. We're going to have a pancake breakfast, croquet, a hot tub soak and a barbecue. We may even take an excursion down to Long Beach to the aquarium. Oh, and we're gonna watch the game too... I'm not sure who to root for, but perhaps Arizona because my special guy lived there for a while...

On Tuesday I will be heading to the Key Club to catch the Screaming Jets. Fresh from Australia, these rockers are making waves in the scene and I am looking forward to their show.

Photos we got 'em: Just a few animal photos that came my way that were too good not to share.

In rotation this week: Blackout 101, "Johnny Cash Remix," Pink, Britney Spears, Trash Daddy and Joe Walla.

Thought o' the week: Keep hanging on. We received some bad news this week at work- we have to take some furlough (unpaid days off). It's going to be tough in some ways, but I think I'll be OK. I'm a little saver as they say. I always put some money in savings from my paychecks, I pay my bills on time (early if I can) and whenever I get a "free check" (you know, those extra ones you get every so often) I use the money to make a car payment or stash it away. I will still have to be careful with my money...

The toughest part is I have already planned a vacation and it's booked and paid for. I was hoping to have a little more extra money to take with me, but now I will have to budget. And all this budgeting stuff has had my tummy upset for two days! We all deal with stress differently and unfortunately when things get too crazy for me, my tummy gets upset.... But I am still doing my best at work and I just stepped up my walking and exercise routines, as my knee is getting better.

These are scary times. I have friends who have been laid off or have had hours cut. I'm facing the same thing myself. But I'm trying to remain calm and focus on all the positive things in my world. I have wonderful friends, a precious pup (my little Atticus), a decent car, etc. Life is pretty good. Keep strong and

keep on rockin'

The other says, Mariposa, with an arrow pointing to the left. So, get in the left turn pocket, and turn left onto Mariposa. Pass the first two stop signs and turn left into the parking lot.)

The church takes up the whole block to your left, pass it and park in the City parking structure at the rear of the church. That Damn 80s Club opens Saturday

The English Beat celebrating 30th anniversary with tour and new effort

The English Beat, formed in Birmingham, England in 1979, are celebrating their 30th anniversary with an action-packed 2009. Led by founding member, lead vocalist and songwriter Dave Wakeling, the band will be recording and touring extensively.

The sparkling live show includes the band’s best-known originals, among them “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Save It for Later,” “Stand Down Margaret” and “I Confess,” and their inspirational covers of “Tears of a Clown” and “Can't Get Used to Losing You,” as well as the hits Wakeling scored with ‘80s pop icons General Public, such as “Tenderness,” “Never You Done That” and “I'll Take You There.”

All this, plus a growing number of new songs that are fast becoming firm favorites with the fans, like “The Love You Give Lasts Forever,” “How Can You Stand There” and “Said We Would Never Die” . . . bring your dancing shoes, and your thinking caps!

The new tracks will be recorded and released in 2009, either as a series of EPs or a full album, and will include new studio tracks, live tracks, acoustic versions, and remixes by good friends The Thievery Corporation.

“There are many perks to being in a pop group,” says Wakeling, “the money, the fame, the fast cars, and the sometimes even faster women, they can all be good, but for someone to tell you that your songs have been a part of the soundtrack of their life for a quarter century is the greatest honor a troubadour can ever receive.”

A part of the 2 Tone ska music revolution of the late '70s and early '80s, alongside their stable mates The Specials, Madness and The Selecter, the Beat perfected their own unique brand of the Punky Reggae Party memorialized in the Bob Marley song of the same name. For Wakeling, the English Beat’s hybrid was a delightful blend of Toots and the Maytals, The Velvet Underground, Buzzcocks, The Four Tops and Van Morrison.

The English Beat never shied away from singing about the current topics on everyone’s lips, and with today’s social conditions so similar to those of the late ‘70s — recession, depression, unemployment, uncertainty, war and rumors of war — their lyrics continue to resonate in a very timely manner. Often asked if he thought pop and politics should mix, Dave always responded wryly, “Only if you are living on Planet Earth!”

The English Beat’s first gig, in March 1979, occurred at the same time as the Three Mile Island nuclear incident in Harrisburg, Penn. Introduced as “the hottest thing since the Pennsylvania Meltdown,” the band has ever since been known for its support of progressive issues and organizations such as Greenpeace, Rock the Earth, CND, Amnesty International, The Smile Train and Heal the Bay.

Wakeling was the executive producer of the Greenpeace benefit album Alternative NRG in '94, which raised funds and awareness for the issue of global warming (he worked full time for Greenpeace in L.A., from 1990-95).

Recorded and mixed entirely by solar power, the album contained great live tracks by R.E.M., U2, Annie Lennox, Jesus and Mary Chain and many others, while the mobile solar generator known as “Cyrus” also acted as a traveling exhibition and lecture room about renewable energy, which, notes Dave, “thank heavens looks like is at last becoming a national priority.”

With this, and social equality in mind, he also set up the MySpace site Skabama, he explains, “to help our new 2 Tone President make his way into The Black and White House!”

Today’s English Beat features Wakeling on lead vocals and guitar; Wayne Lothian, a former member of General Public’s ‘90s incarnation, on bass and vocals; Antonee First Class, toaster; Rhythmm Epkins, drums and vocals; Nat Love, sax and vocals; Ray Jacildo, keyboards and vocals; and Hidden Kulcha, guitar.

Recent reviews and attendances at shows have been nothing short of superb: 130 shows in 2008 — all of them packed with happy, optimistic, sweaty people! Veteran fans are saying that they are some of the best English Beat shows they have ever seen, and newcomers are equally enthralled. People of all creeds and colors, from ages 16-60, dancing in time, connected and co-existing; there is definitely something in the air!

Highlights for the English Beat over the years have been touring with The Clash, David Bowie, The Talking Heads, R.E.M., and The Police, playing both US Festivals in '82, and '83, having songs in John Hughes and John Cusak movies Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Grosse Pointe Blank, and, for Wakeling, having his trademark Teardrop guitar placed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, right next to the guitar of one of his heroes, Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground.

Dave visits his guitar every time he's in Cleveland, and stays until people start thinking that he's weird for talking to a guitar in a glass case!

“At such an exciting time musically, and politically,” says Wakeling, “The English Beat are proud as punch to be spreading their message of connectivity, tolerance and good will. We are all one, and The English Beat would like to see you, one and all, at any of our upcoming shows.”

The band run a Myspace site, www.myspace.com/officialbeatspace ; a Facebook page, englishbeat; a Street Promotion Team, at englishbeatstreetteam@ymail.com; and a Cyber Promotion Team, at englishbeatcyberteam@ymail.com, to help spread the good word about what the band is up to. Fans who get involved get free passes to the shows and a chance to meet with the band at sound check.

Says Dave: “So come on, jump on in, the water is lovely, for crying out loud!”

Vulture Whale to release their sophomore effort in Spring 09 on Skybucket Records

Like the Mud Shark and the Rock Lobster before it, Vulture Whale is quickly making a name for itself in rock's rich taxonomy. The group hails from Birmingham Alabama, and in February 2009, they will release their sophomore (and also self-titled) album on Skybucket Records (Dexateens, 13ghosts, Barton Carroll).

Vulture Whale is comprised of Wes McDonald (formerly of The Ohms), guitarist Lester Nuby (formerly of Verbena), bassist Keelan Parrish, and drummer Jake Waitzman. All of the members of Vulture Whale have played together in one form or another for several years now, and their chemistry immediately is apparent on the opening tracks of Vulture Whale.

The album — mixed by Mark Rains (The Shys, Waylon Jennings, The Close) — is a focused affair in which clever, plain spoken and honest lyrics sit atop inventive, catchy melodies that are underscored by lush, thumpy arrangements. The album's centerpiece is the jaunty "Sugar," a track that is reminiscent of Pavement and Modest Mouse. "Tote it to Cleveland, AL" gives a nod to The Replacements, while "Guillotine" is a raucous call-to-arms.

Equal parts Grendel and Pegasus, the Vulture Whale dwells deep in the mythical Ocean of Rock where the Rolling Stones regularly ditch their behind-the-beat swagger for up-tempo and melodious rock numbers. Put simply, Vulture Whale. is the Saturday night record you've been waiting for, from the band you should have been rocking out to long ago."

Don't Be a Stranger to release effort in April

Don’t be a Stranger was formed in 2002, in a tiny village in rural Värmland, a Swedish region of dark woods and weird dialects. Liv Widell (singer/songwriter), Louise Weibull (Fidget) and her sister Christina Weibull (Honey is Cool) met by coincidence and started making music together.

Liv had a God given voice and abundant musical sketches in her head and hands. Louise and Christina had flow, melodies, inspiration, instruments and a brand new portable digital recording studio. About a year later, as the lack of rhythm became too painful, the girls were joined by Johan Forsman (Fidget). Loads of songs were born without much of a direction or outspoken desired result. They all had completely different musical back- grounds, preferences and preconceptions of what to do and how.

In 2005, the band moved to Stockholm, to a “goth” basement with neon lights and skeletons hanging from the roof. Acollective depression sets in and marks the music. They felt an urging need for joy and love and anything but that dark basement! They ask Mattias Albinsson (Ebon Tale) to join them on the bass. When summer came at last, they decided to put their music on tape.

Don’t be a Stranger entered Studio Cobra where the band’s last but not least member is found in the control room of the dark cave like studio: Konie Ehrencrona (Konie and the Club, Hipwhips) completes the setting of the group with his spirits and his guitars.

Cheap Lullaby Records will release Don’t Be A Strangers Frutti Di Mare in April 09. The band will be featured on Showtimes "United States of Tara" on Feb 1st and will be touring the US this spring.

Track Listing:
01) Perfect Problem
02) Too Late
03) Love
04) Mon-chi-chi
05) Lonely Together
06) No Surprise
07) We’ve Been Waiting Far Too Long
08) Homerun
09) You Leave Alone
10) Yellow Moon

The Presidents of the United States of America on tour

Since their inception over a decade ago, THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA have remained one of America’s best live bands, combining their indie garage sound and intelligent weirdo lyrics into an unforgettably fantastic live show. PUSA have proved how a little garage band can have long-term success by sticking to their roots, taking care of their fans, giving away music (free weekly downloads at www.presidentsrock.com ), and keeping it simple, stupid.

Every year they headline and sellout tours in the US and Europe, with an Australia or Japan added in for texture. Their sets are 90-minute joy-fests, where the crowd is tasked with singing, stomping, and general ‘4th President’ duties. It’s something to see. If you don’t believe it, ask a door person or bartender at your town’s favorite club, and chances are you’ll get an earful.

With their latest album “These Are the Good Times People”, released in March of 2008, PUSA delivered an uplifting and often brilliant rock & roll album. Now they are releasing 3 new EP’s, available exclusively at iTunes, that each include a song from the album, an exclusive B-Side and a new video. That’s three (3) videos, people. Big budget numbers, with helicopters and explosions. You bet.

Add the latest video “Rot in the Sun” to your blog – grab it at http://vimeo.com/3008359

CVS launches For All the Ways You Care contest

CVS/pharmacy, the nation’s leading retail pharmacy, today announced its second annual “For All the Ways You Care” contest created to celebrate and honor caregivers across America.

CVS/pharmacy invites caregivers and others to submit stories of caring online at www.ForAllTheWaysYouCare.com, a growing community that strives to celebrate the unsung caregivers in our society. The site provides a forum for people to share a story about someone who has touched their life or how they personally have touched another's.

“CVS/pharmacy is committed to caring for women and those they care for. We are pleased to see the For All the Ways You Care community continue to grow as people exchange stories and discuss all aspects of caregiving,” said Rob Price, senior vice president, Marketing and Advertising, CVS/pharmacy. "Thousands of stories have been shared on ForAllTheWaysYouCare.com since it launched last year, and we continue to be truly amazed by the selfless devotion demonstrated by so many caregivers.”

From the stories submitted from October 5, 2008 through March 1, 2009, CVS/pharmacy and an esteemed panel of judges will select a group of finalists and ultimately a grand prize winner whose stories best represent a nurturing spirit and dedication to others. The finalists will be honored for their inspirational stories at a luncheon and luxury weekend in New York City in May. In appreciation for their commitment to caring, nine finalists will each receive $10,000 and the grand prize winner will receive $25,000 from CVS/pharmacy.

Panelists selecting the winners include Lee Woodruff, author and wife of ABC News Correspondent Bob Woodruff; Dr. Roseanna Means, founder of Women of Means, a program of volunteer doctors who provide free medical care to homeless women and children; Tina Sharkey, BabyCenter chairman and global president; and Rosemary Ellis, Good Housekeeping editor-in-chief. The members of the panel have also posted their own personal caregiving stories on www.ForAllTheWaysYouCare.com.

“I am privileged to be part of this growing campaign,” said Woodruff. “Our family continues to receive an outpouring of love and support, and I am grateful to help give back by honoring special caregivers across America.”

To join the community of caring and enter the For All the Ways You Care contest, please visit: www.ForAllTheWaysYouCare.com.

Relax with Spa Week specials

As the full impact of the economic downturn becomes painfully apparent, millions of Americans are experiencing the financial challenges of an uncertain future. So, it goes without saying that stress has become an everyday companion for many of us. This is unfortunately the start of a cycle where the average consumer cuts back on many of life’s necessities. Never before has Spa Week’s message been more relevant than in these trying times—the spa lifestyle is not only essential to maintaining one’s health and well-being, but it’s now available and affordable to everyone.

The 10th edition of the Spa Week Event will be taking place April 13-19, 2009 in over 700 spas across North America including markets such as, Arizona, Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, D.C., Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Florida, Long Island, Los Angeles, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Toronto, Canada, and will once again be offering its signature $50 full service spa treatments. A list of participating spas will be posted on www.spaweek.com.

Since its inception, Spa Week Media has been devoted to offering the consumer more for less, and the Company continues to make this its primary goal. In today’s struggling economy, people are understandably hesitant to splurge on expensive and unfamiliar treatments, so Spa Week is the perfect way to enjoy the best that spas have to offer without having to break the bank.

The Spa Week Events, taking place each year in the Spring and Fall, are known for offering even the most luxurious of spa treatments, ones that were at one time only available to the rich and famous. Elite services, such as the Ten Hands Massage (which is simultaneously performed by five therapists), the 14 Carat Gold Facial, and the Caviar Facial, all normally costing hundreds of dollars, have been offered during the Event at the $50 price point. Also accessible for only $50 each are medical treatments like Botox injections, Diamond-tip Microdermabrasion, and Chemical Peels. The idea is to afford everyone the ability to experience even these typically pricey procedures and the amazing benefits the spa lifestyle can bring. At Spa Week, it’s all about helping you to feel good on the inside and look good on the outside.

As always, the goal of Spa Week is to introduce a new generation of consumers to the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and to open up the spa industry to the masses. Spa Week’s goal is to make “wellness” more than just a word, but to make it a reality. By educating consumers to the health benefits of the spa lifestyle, Spa Week is taking a leadership role in the campaign to change the unhealthy course the country is navigating.

Spa Week was created and founded by Cheryl Reid, who hails from successful careers within the luxury spa industry and publishing spheres. For 2009, Spa Week is proud and excited to announce the inclusion of jane iredale The Skincare Makeup as its Title Sponsor and Allure Magazine as its exclusive National Media Sponsor.

Academy for New Musical Theatre to offer preview of new musicals

On Monday, February 9th at the Colony Theatre in Burbank, the Academy for New Musical Theatre will present Got Musical!, a sneak preview of seven brand-new musicals in development for producers across the country, giving an insight into the Academy's process for creating new musicals from scratch specifically for producers and theatre companies.

Musicals currently in development which will be showcased at this event include a traditional musical based on a classic Shaw play, a goofy all-cow revue, a cutting-edge cyberspace musical, an experimental take on an Ibsen play, and an enchanted evening based on tales of the Great Lakes shipping industry, among others.

'You don't have to be in Los Angeles to benefit from our process,' says ANMT Executive Director Scott Guy. 'Weʼve developed many shows long-distance utilizing internet technology and our digital equipment, including shows with writers based in London and Berlin.'

One of these "long-distance" shows is Miss Vulcan 1939 which the Academy developed for the Red Mountain Theatre in Birmingham, Alabama.

"Red Mountain was so happy with that process that they have produced that show two years in a row," says Guy, "and they're planning to remount it again next year.'

Guy explains that the ANMT development process is fairly simple: the producer generates or approves an idea; the creative team creates a paragraph-sized version, then a half-dozen-page version, and eventually a 15-minute first pass. At this point, the producer either shuts down the project, or agrees to produce a public reading of the work.

If a producer approves of the project after the first 15-minute pass, the Academy supports table readings and workshops of the work, nurturing it through first draft. Then, the producer produces a public reading of the work at his expense. After the producer has fulfilled his obligation by producing the reading, he is under no obligation to produce the musical; but if he does produce the musical, the Academy expects the producer to do so under terms approved by the Dramatists Guild.

'We've found this to be a win-win situation for the writer and for the producer,' says Associate Artistic Director Elise Dewsberry, 'and we're excited to share this funny, artful and stimulating evening and showing off our innovative business model for developing new musicals for independent producers and theatre companies.'

Got Musical! takes place at 7:30pm on Monday, February 9th at the Colony Theatre in Burbank. Tickets are $10. For more information, and to make a reservation, please visit www.anmt.org and click on Got Musical!

Jeremy Jay announces tour

Jeremy Jay is a mixture of a storyteller, artist and singer. Following a series of 7" singles, he released his debut LP, A Place Where We Could Go on K in Spring 2008 to rave reviews.

Currently, he splits his time between living in Paris and Los Angeles, the dream cities of the French New Wave and Hollywood. Similar to films, Jeremy identifies with the visual stories of life and love, and touches on everything human; he is always in the process of writing and recording, playing the guitar and taking long walks. Jeremy is getting acquainted to living in Paris, but still draws much of his inspiration from the films of iconic American teen auteur John Hughes.

With his new single “Love Everlasting” and full-length Slow Dance (both released by K), Jeremy has created his own brand of urgent pop music that fits perfect in the house parties and punk rock clubs that he prefers to play. In 2009 Jeremy will be touring Europe, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

Paid Dues independent hip-hop festival slated for March 28 in San Bernardino

The “PAID DUES” INDEPENDENT HIP-HOP FESTIVAL--presented by MURS 3:16 in association with Guerilla Union (Rock The Bells, Cypress Hill Smoke Out)--will return Saturday, March 28 to the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, CA for the fourth consecutive year. Named “Independent hip-hop's premiere festival” by SOHH.COM, the festival supports this genre of music where advanced lyricism, stinging political commentary and quality DJ performances flourish in a seemingly parallel universe. The 2009 lineup will feature performances from ATMOSPHERE, TECH N9NE, LIVING LEGENDS, BROTHER ALI, B-REAL, GROUCH & ELIGH, CAGE, BLU & EXILE, EYEDEA & ABILITIES, LMNO, DJ VAL THE VANDAL and VERBS AND THE BAYLIENS. The event will be hosted by 2MEX.

Says Murs: "This year’s Paid Dues line-up is very special to me because we have acts like Tech N9ne and Atmosphere who I've been big fans of and also trying to book forever. The show also marks the So-Cal return of E & A, who haven't played the NOS since the legendary Wu Tang reunion at the 2004 Rock The Bells. Cage, B-Real and G & E all have new records dropping this spring."

He elaborates: “There's nothing like being the first to see your favorite artist do their new material. On the other side of things, myself and the entire GU staff will be diligent to provide the same high quality live music experience Guerilla Union has become known for over the years. I just can't believe this is our fourth year! I am so thankful to all our family, friends and supporters. And I look forward to making this March 28th another great and memorable moment in hip hop history.”

Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union adds, “Now into the fourth year, we are extremely proud that we have continued to partner with Murs to showcase and support independent hip-hop year-in and year-out. We are truly committed to providing our fans the best show and experience that we can possibly put together. This year’s lineup represents some of the most notable and up-and-coming artists from the independent circuit. Fans will also be treated to new music from several acts as the festival maintains to be a live promotional platform for the artists that we work with. I can’t wait to see all these acts. I truly believe this is the biggest and best line-up yet for PAID DUES.”

PAID DUES is an all-ages show. The Guerilla Union ticket pre-sale will begin on Wednesday, January 28 for registered Guerilla Union members. Tickets will be available via Ticketmaster online and at all locations starting Saturday, January 31.

This year’s installment of PAID DUES follows the festival’s third sold-out annual Southern California event in 2008 which featured artists such as Sage Francis, Little Brother, Hieroglyphics, Buckshot of the Boot Camp Clik and Yak Ballz. 2008 also saw the festival make stops in New York, NY, Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Denver, CO.

In 2006 the first PAID DUES festival--with a line-up featuring Felt, Aesop Rock, Living Legends, El-P, Hangar 18 and more--sold out with over 5,000 concertgoers packing the Shrine Expo Center in Los Angeles. The following year MURS and Guerilla Union, along with performers Felt, Living Legends, Sage Francis, Brother Ali and others--teamed up again for the PAID DUES festival tour for over 10 dates across the country.

Preparing to embark on a U.S. headlining tour with The Scene Aesthetic, The Honorary Title, and The Bigger Lights February 26 in Evansville, Indiana, NeverShoutNever!, (singer/guitarist Drew, and touring musicians bassist Taylor McFee and drummer Nathan Ellison), already has 26 million MySpace plays, over 15,000 EPs and 125,000 tracks sold on iTunes, all as an unsigned artist.

Two Testament classics to be reissued on vinyl

Two classic albums by thrash legends TESTAMENT – 1997's "Demonic" and 1999's "The Gathering" – will be reissued on gatefold double vinyl by Prosthetic Records on Feb. 3. Each will feature etched artwork on Side D and be limited to 1,000 copies worldwide. Additionally, 100 copies of "Demonic" will feature red vinyl, while 100 copies of "The Gathering" will feature gold vinyl. Pre-orders can currently be placed at store.prostheticrecords.com.

Over the last year, TESTAMENT made one of the most successful comebacks in recent metal history. Their latest album, "The Formation of Damnation," featuring four-fifths of the group's original lineup, debuted at #59 on the Billboard Top 200, the highest-charting release of the band's career. A high-profile summer tour with Judas Priest, Heaven & Hell and Motorhead followed. The band is currently preparing to tour Europe with Judas Priest and Megadeth next month.

During the 1990s, TESTAMENT were one of the few bands unafraid to unabashedly fly the flag of heavy metal. Although the group's lineup changed several times over the course of the decade, vocalist Chuck Billy and guitarist Eric Peterson could always be trusted to deliver quality true metal in an era dominated by short-lived musical trends.

Their efforts didn't go unnoticed. All Music Guide praises "Demonic" – mixed by Michael Wagener (Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne), and featuring Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Strapping Young Lad) on drums – as "the most evil-sounding album of their career" to that point, saying that "'Demonic' rivals even Slayer's 'Reign In Blood' in terms of heaviness." Meanwhile, Metal Hammer calls "The Gathering" – mixed by Andy Sneap (Opeth, Megadeth), and featuring guitarist James Murphy (Death, Obituary), bassist Steve DiGorgio (Sadus, Death) and Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo – "skull-flattening perfection," adding that "if there is a more important late '90s metal album, we'd love to know what it is."

"Demonic" and "The Gathering" were reissued on CD in 2008 and are currently available on all major digital platforms. Prosthetic plans to reissue additional TESTAMENT titles later in 2009, including the first-ever official CD release of the band's complete performance at the 1987 Dynamo Open Air festival.

Vanna to begin tour in support of new effort

Boston post-hardcore group Vanna will release their anticipated sophomore album, A New Hope, March 24th on Epitaph Records. Produced and mixed by Steve Evetts (Every Time I Die, Our Last Night, Story of the Year) and mastered by Alan Douches (Converge), A New Hope emphasizes the band's heightened musical abilities, balancing a perfect blend of emotive rock and perilous hardcore with refined precession. Fans can catch a preview of the new album this January as the band tours with Gwen Stacy.

Since the release of Vanna's fan-favorite debut EP, The Search Party Never Came, and their follow-up full-length, Curses, the band has been on a continuous musical journey, evolving, exploring and maturing with each release and tour. With the experience of using what works and letting go of what doesn't, the band tackled the writing and recording of A New Hope with an added perspective and understanding.

"The writing and recording process naturally becomes more dialed and decisive with each record," explains lead vocalist Chris Preece. "This record was approached with more of a group mentality. We talked a lot about what we liked and disliked about our last two releases, and each one of us were able to express ourselves in every step of the process. We locked ourselves in our practice space for two months, everyone threw out song ideas, and the ideas were fleshed out into something that we were all happy with. All of our individual influences and inspirations played a big role creatively."

Creativity abounds. A New Hope will grab Vanna's core fans with catchy songs fueled by intense breakdowns, while their accessible melodious song-writing will open the door to a new audience.
Continually elevating their game, Vanna have raised the musical stakes with a bombardment of twelve tracks that invoke a deluge of sensations. Preece's guttural screams and Evan Pharmakis' (guitarist/vocals) melodic choruses seamlessly duel on tracks like the epic post-hardcore anthem for the ages, "Safe To Say," and the sweeping hit "The Same Graceful Wind." The fast, ferocious work of guitarist Nick Lambert, bassist Shawn Marquis and drummer Chris Campbell provide a wall of intense sound on tracks like "Thrashmouth" and "Life and Limb."

Vanna's undying passion for creating and growing musically has resulted in one of the best post-hardcore releases in years. Resistance is futile. See Vanna this January and February on tour with Gwen Stacy and Our Last Night.

Dame Fortune to release new CD and DVD

If Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and Frank Miller were the lyricists for Kiss, Motley Crue and Guns N' Roses, you'd have Dame Fortune. Both sinister and romantic, DAME FORTUNE uses classic hard rock with occasional Gothic overtones to deliver their clever and biting lyrics.

January 31st 2009 LA cult rockers DAME FORTUNE will release their third CD, THE SECRET ART and film their first live DVD at Club Vodka at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood as they continue to build their fan base that already includes more than 5000 fans on myspace through a series of blistering live shows.

THE SECRET ART finds the Hollywood based hard rock band further expanding their sound and lyrical themes. Standout tracks include the impossibly catchy “Perpetual Emotion Machine,” (Co-written with Richard Davis, Eagles co-producer & member of the Eagles’ touring band), the sleazy metal swagger of “In Like Flynn,” and the arena rock anthem, “Hikikomori (Live As Though The Day Were Here),”encouraging disenfranchised Japanese youth to stand up against their society’s strict code of conformity.

If you thought that the poets of the grunge era merely muddied their waters that they appear to be deep, if you find the pho-rage of numetal and rap rock leaving you cold, if you loved the best of the darker side of the 80's hard rock like Motley Crue, Guns 'n Roses, and legends like Kiss, Aerosmith, Queen, and Zep, still send a shiver up your spine, if you like big hooks, slamming power chords, catchy melodies, sing along anthems, with lyrics full of sneering rock and roll attitude and great storytelling, then DAME FORTUNE is your band. As songwriters they have the musical muscle and lyrical depth to create a new legion of Generation X and Y true believers who can proudly call themselves Rock and Rollers.

2002’s debut EP THE GREAT COSMIC SCEHME earned them the Rock City News Award for Best Alternative Band.

2004’s BOTHS SIDES OF MIDNIGHT, featuring KISS ghost drummer Kevin Valentine on 5 tracks secured them a distribution deal with Nightmare Distribution and Perris records and was given 3 and 1/2 stars by Japan’s Burrn! Magazine.

In 2005 DAME FORTUNE debuted a half dozen new songs at shows both in Hollywood and areas surrounding Los Angeles, each followed by one of their infamous all night after parties, and filmed their first video for "The Loony Bin.”

In 2006 DAME FORTUNE ‘s full-length documentary “The Making of Both Sides of Midnight” screened on the historic 20th Century Fox Lot, and they started recording for their most ambitious effort yet, THE SECRET ART. On January 31st, 2009, after 4 years of blood, sweat and tears, the secret will be revealed…

Jeff Wire (Bass & Vocals)

ASPCA reminds pet parents have options rather than abandonment

As the downturn in the economy continues, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today responded to the flurry of recent media reports about pets being both left behind in foreclosed homes and abandoned in shelters. The ASPCA wants to remind pet parents everywhere that they have options when faced with these heart-breaking decisions.

“While the ASPCA has not personally experienced an increase in animal intake to its Manhattan Adoption Center due to the economy, we have heard that many shelters across the country are seeing an increase in the number of abandoned animals,” said Dr. Stephen Zawistowski, Executive Vice President of ASPCA Programs & Science Advisor. “This issue will vary drastically from region to region across the United States, and without a network in place to collect and report these numbers from the nearly 5,000 community animal shelters nationwide, it is difficult to quantify.”

“The loss of a home is devastating and can only be made worse by having to also leave behind a beloved family pet,” said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “The ASPCA wants to remind pet owners that planning ahead is the best way to make an informed decision. Even though options in these cases may be less than ideal, it will be much better than simply leaving the pet behind in an abandoned home.”

The ASPCA offers this advice for people who are faced with foreclosure and the loss of their pets:

Check with friends, family and neighbors to see if someone can provide temporary foster care for your pet until you get back on your feet. Agree to a specific time frame, and check on the pet regularly;

If you are moving into a rental property, make sure pets are allowed and get permission in advance—and in writing; and

Contact your local animal shelter, humane society or rescue group, in advance of your move, since many shelters limit their admissions to the number of animals they can adequately care for. If a shelter agrees to take in your pet, provide medical records, behavior information, and anything else that might assist shelter workers in finding your pet a new home.

“It is difficult and heartbreaking to lose a pet as a result of economic hardship,” continued Sayres. “But pet parents may take comfort in knowing that their pet will be better off, if they plan ahead and keep their cat or dog’s well-being in mind.”
