Global Inheritance coming to a festival near you

2009 will see GLOBAL INHERITANCE (GI) expand its reach during a very busy spring, including stops at leading North American music and green festivals including the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Stagecoach: California’s Country Music Festival. GLOBAL INHERITANCE -- a 501c3 non-profit organization -- is working to empower individuals worldwide to think and act creatively in solving global imbalances by establishing unique initiatives pushing for progressive social change.

Through green technology, the arts and interactivity, GLOBAL INHERITANCE is reinventing activism to a new generation looking to make a difference in their communities and beyond. The organization has become a fixture among North America’s leading music festivals and events including the Virgin Festivals in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Baltimore, SXSW and UMF, in addition to working with the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and the ESPN Summer X Games for the past seven years.

Both the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival (America’s most critically acclaimed music festival taking place in Indio, CA on April 17, 18 & 19, with performances by Paul McCartney, The Killers, The Cure and Morrissey) and Stagecoach: California’s Country Music Festival (set for April 25 & 26, with performances by Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Reba and Kid Rock) take place at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, CA and will feature several GLOBAL INHERITANCE exhibits.

In addition to the popular Carpoolchella and 10-for-1 bottle exchange programs, new exhibits include GI’s TRASHed:: Art Of Recycling bins. These are artistic designs of recycling bins that are then integrated into the festival grounds to encourage recycling and provide inspiring new ways to view artwork. An inspiring example of functional art, 30 of these bins will be on the festival grounds. Post show, the bins will be donated to the Los Angeles School District.

Also onsite will be Energy FACTory bikes: specially outfitted bikes that create energy as festival go-ers pedal. As part of the Energy FACTory bike display at Coachella, GI is hosting Tour De Caddy Shack, whereby attendees can ride the bikes to power TV’s showing the film Caddy Shack. The individual powering both films with the best time will win a Coachella gold cart.

Another highlight is 18 & Up, the first-ever renewable energy customized Golf Cart collection. These Golf Carts will not only operate on solar, biodiesel, switch grass-based ethanol and wind modes of energy, but each cart will be redesigned to represent different artists & genres performing at the Coachella/Stagecoach festivals. The goal of the 18 & Up project is to transform a staple mode of transportation in the Coachella Valley into a mobile alternative energy exhibit. Over the past two years, Global Inheritance has created the Energy FACTory to educate individuals onsite about the potential of alterative energy. This year, GLOBAL INHERITANCE will apply this technology and provide a fleet of Golf Carts never before seen in the western world.

GLOBAL INHERITANCE will be a part of several other Southern California events coming this spring, starting with various activities at the TRASHed @ The Camp space in Costa Mesa, CA throughout March (http://www.myspace.com/camptrashed).

On April 4, the organization will be featured at The Hive Gallery & Studios in Downtown Los Angeles for Think Big--A Traveling Exhibit of 40 Mini Recycling Bins by 40 of Los Angeles’ finest artists. An Energy FACTory bike and the wind-powered golf cart from the 18 & Up exhibit will also be showcased at the San Diego Science Festival on April 4.

Beginning June 7, GI will run their Tour Rider initiative for the Hollywood Bowl’s summer concert series for the fourth year in a row. The Tour Rider initiative addresses the chronic traffic problems and pollution from gridlock traffic at large venues for concerts and festivals. Tour Riders are attendees that carpool, use Park & Ride programs and/or take public transportation to a Tour Rider sponsored event. Tour Riders receive an array of perks ranging from access to VIP ticket lines, private music showcases, gift bags, tickets to museums and other local events.

Monte Hale dead at 89

Popular Singing Cowboy and actor, Monte Hale, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2009 in his home in Studio City, California after a lengthy illness. He was 89 years old. His career as an entertainer spanned over sixty years in the industry.

The Texas native bought his first guitar for $8.50 at the age of thirteen. He launched his musical career performing at various clubs around the state, quickly making a name for himself and expanding his performing venues. It was during his performance at a War Bond Rally that Phillip Isley discovered him and soon the handsome, talented young man was headed to Hollywood for a screen test. He hitchhiked all the way, stopping at a gasoline station around the corner from the studio, just long enough to wash his face and comb his hair before making his appearance.

Monte’s screen test was so impressive that he was immediately signed to star in “The Big Bonanza” with Richard Arlen. Shortly after he was signed to a seven year contact with Republic where he was groomed up with films starring Wild Bill Elliott, Sunset Carson, and such fare as “Steppin in Society”(1945) with Everett Horton.

Around this time the executives at Republic were looking for someone to test a new color film and they decided to team Monte with Adrian Booth in the Magnicolor “Home On The Range” (1946), thus making Monte Hale Republic’s first western star in a color series. His next seven films were made in Trucolor. Monte went on to star in 19 of his own films.

Monte was tall and handsome and possessed an excellent voice. With this in mind, Republic put his voice and his songwriting talents to work in the westerns. Not considered true musical westerns like those of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, Monte’s films were mainly dramas in which he stopped to sing a song now and then. He became one of Republic’s most popular and respected singing cowboys.

Fawcett Publications sold over two million copies per month of Monte Hale comic books. Now considered collector’s items, the publications were sold in six series and published in twenty-seven different languages.

After his departure from Republic, Monte went on to do guest starring roles on such TV series as “Gunsmoke,” “Honey West,” “Tales of Wells Fargo,” “Wild Bill Hickock,” and “Circus Boy.” He was a member of the panel on “Juke Box Jury” and appeared on the “Western Star Theatre” radio program. In addition he continued his work in films, most notably as Rock Hudson’s attorney in “Giant” (1956) and the town drunk in “Chase” (1966) with Marlon Brando.

Monte and his wife Joanne were co-founders of the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum and serve as members of the board of directors and have since the inception of the museum. The museum was later renamed the Autry Museum of Western Heritage and is now part of the Autry National Center as the Museum of the American West.

A permanent exhibit dedicated to Monte Hale’s career is located in the Autry’s Museum of the American West’s Spirit of Imagination Gallery.

In 2004 Monte was honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Motion Pictures.

Monte is survived by his wife, Joanne Hale and a brother, Dick Hale. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the Autry National Center. For additional information contact Maxine Hansen at (818) 752-7770.

Motown celebrates 50th anniversary and life of Marvin Gaye with digital album

In the 50th anniversary year of Motown, April 2, 2009 will mark the 70th birthday of the late great Marvin Gaye. Sadly, April 1 will also mark the 25th anniversary of his tragic death the day before his 45th birthday. Motown's top solo male artist of the '60s, led by his "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"—at one time the biggest selling single in Motown history—Gaye became the label's most revolutionary artist in the '70s, breaking down barriers whether singing about the body or the soul, social consciousness or sexual politics. From his '60s classic "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," to his legendary rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game, he defined the soul in "soul music."

Marvin Gaye's popularity and influence continues. His 1971 album What's Going On forever changed the subject matter of popular music; it's one of Rolling Stone magazine's top 10 albums of all time. In 1973, Let's Get It On became perhaps the most passionate and sexual album ever recorded, led by its title track, which remains one of the most popular songs of all time a certified Gold single back in the day, in the digital music era it's a Gold digital download and a Platinum-selling ringtone as well.

In 1987, three years after his death, Gaye was rightfully among only the second group of artists honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. More recently, Marvin Gaye was No. 6 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Singers Of All Time.

Noting the milestones of his birth and passing, Motown/UMe will issue a special digital-only album on March 31, Marvin Gaye: Then & Now, a 14-track set of rarities highlighted by the previously unreleased "Soulie" (pronounced "sue-lee"), a 1966 recording recently unearthed by Motown's New York-based producer Mickey Gentile, and a hot funk 2009 remix of "I Want You," Marvin's No. 1 hit from 1976, by the renowned John Morales of M+M Productions. Other tracks making their online debut are: the deep vault track "It's Your Party," and his two super-rare late '50s Chess recordings with Harvey & The Moonglows ("Mama Loocie," "Twelve Months Of The Year"). Rounding out this special collection are Marvin's earliest, pre-hit Motown singles ("Witchcraft," "Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide" and more).

Motown/UMe is also issuing a vinyl-only edition of United (Motown/UMe), Gaye's classic duet album with Tammi Terrell, on April 14. The standard by which all R&B male-female duos are measured, Gaye and Terrell first teamed on the 1967 album that included "If I Could Build My World Around You," "Your Precious Love" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."

In addition, the ongoing, acclaimed "Motown 50" podcast series will feature special episodes on Marvin Gaye's life and music; Gaye is also well represented on the deluxe 10-CD box set Motown: The Complete No. 1's, which kicked off the year long celebration for Motown's 50th anniversary. Both The Real Thing, a DVD collection of his greatest television and concert appearances, and Gold, a 2-CD overview of his career, have recently been certified Gold. Gaye will also figure prominently in a two-hour documentary about Motown produced by the label's founder, Berry Gordy.

Bay City Rollers and Arista's legal battle continues

Two years ago, the Bay City Rollers filed a lawsuit against Arista Records, Inc., claiming that Arista had failed to pay them millions of dollars in royalties over an almost thirty-year period. The suit, filed on behalf of the Scottish band by Holland & Knight, alleges that Arista breached its contract with the Rollers and failed to account for or pay any royalties to the band for years, amounting to many millions of dollars in unpaid royalties.

In response to that lawsuit, Arista filed a motion to dismiss all of the Rollers' claims, asserting that the Rollers were barred from recovery for the millions of dollars that they had generated for the company. In its ruling, the Court expressly rejected Arista's main arguments, with the result that the lawsuit will now go forward without any meaningful impediment to the Rollers' claims.

"Although we are delighted, we are not surprised that the Court denied Arista’s efforts to dismiss the Rollers' claims," said Josh Krumholz of Holland & Knight, lead counsel for the Rollers. "This ruling is a highly significant victory for the Rollers and their efforts to recoup the millions owed to them by Arista Records in unpaid royalties. We now look forward to recovering in full the royalties that they have earned, but have been wrongly withheld from them, together with the interest that is due to them for the many years that their money has been wrongfully withheld."

To learn more about the original suit filed in 2007, please click here:
http://www.hklaw.com/id24660/publicationid5/returnid34/contentid47118/

The Bay City Rollers, also known as the "Rollers," were the UK's biggest selling global act in the 1970s, gaining massive popularity around the world with their clean-cut image, distinctive plaid outfits and upbeat pop hits. For a period of time known as "Rollermania," they enjoyed sell-out tours, hit records and even had their own weekly television series in both the U.S. and UK. At the height of their fame, comparisons to the Beatles' earlier popularity were not uncommon.

In total, the Rollers released eight original albums and numerous greatest hits and compilations, including five straight gold records and six singles that made the Top 40 on the U.S. hit charts. Among their many hits were Saturday Night, I Only Want to Be With You and Bye Bye Baby. As proof of their ongoing popularity, Arista's most recent compilation, called Absolute Rollers -- the Very Best of, hit the Top 10 on the UK charts within the last year, and a new Collections CD is due to be released shortly.

'Grunge is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music' (released April 1, 2009, via ECW Press) by Greg Prato is the definitive story of the Pacific Northwest music scene of the late '80s and early '90s. Never before has a book attempted to examine the scene as a whole.

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament says, "Finally, a book about the early years of our little scene in Seattle. I can't wait to hear all the different perspectives from the people that were actually there, not the so-called experts, who didn't show up until the '90s."

Prato will sign copies of his new book at The Book Revue in Huntington, NY on Wednesday, 8-April at 7pm (313 New York Ave), and also at Easy Street Records & Cafe in West Seattle on Saturday, 25-April at 6pm (4559 California Ave SW). These events are free and open to public (for more information, visit www.bookrevue.com and www.easystreetonline.com ).

Taking the form of an oral history, Prato's tome contains over 130 original interviews conducted for the book over a three-year period. No outside interviews are included and most of the interviews are published here for the first time.

Some of the original interviews include:
Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam singer
Jeff Ament, Pearl Jam/Mother Love Bone bassist
Kim Thayil, Soundgarden guitarist
Susan Silver, Soundgarden/Alice in Chains' manager, ex-wife of Chris Cornell
Duff McKagan, Guns N' Roses bassist
Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney, Alice in Chains guitarist and drummer
Nancy Layne McCallum, mother of late Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley
Mark Arm, Mudhoney singer
Chad Channing, Nirvana drummer
Jack Endino, producer Nirvana/Soundgarden/Mudhoney
Charles Peterson, photographer
Bruce Pavitt & Jonathan Poneman, founders Sub Pop Records

'Grunge is Dead' begins with a retrospective of the '60s and '70s that explains the rise of the Seattle music scene. Additionally, a large number of previously unpublished photographs appear in color and black and white throughout the book. The result is the complete first-hand history of grunge.

'Grunge is Dead' will allow rock fans to discover a unique chapter in music history, through the experiences of the people who were actually there.

Greg Prato is a Long Island, New York-based journalist whose writing has appeared in All Music Guide, Classic Rock Magazine, and Goldmine Magazine, and is the author of the books 'A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other: The Story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon' and 'Touched by Magic: The Tommy Bolin Story.' He has interviewed many noted rock musicians over the years, including members of Rush, Kiss, Jane's Addiction, The Ramones, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and others.

Bichon FurKids Rescue needs your help

Hi Everyone

Once again we are looking for foster homes for about 7 or so little furkids who are waiting for our help. One is a surrender by his owner.... she's moving and can't take him..... she's had him since he was 8 weeks old...... he's now 12 years old. Unbelievable. The 6 others are at the Orange County Shelter..... believe it or not, one of them is also 12 years old. How can someone have a dog for that many years and then just say oh well, we can't keep him or we're moving and can't take him. I don't get it.

If you can find it in your heart to open your home to one of them until we're able to find them forever homes, we'd be ever so grateful. As always, we provide everything you need to foster them, you just add the love and a little training. I've attached their photos to pull at your heartstrings.

Kindly forward this on to family and friends. Please help us help them.

Warm regards, Barb

Most sincerely,

Barbara Riggs,

Drop Dead. Gorgeous on tour in support of new effort

DROP DEAD, GORGEOUS have returned with THE HOT N’ HEAVY an explosive thrill-ride of a record. Bolstered by the same crushing intensity that first earned the Denver-bred band a loyal global following, DDG’s electrifying and adventurous new studio disc-- appropriately dubbed THE HOT N’ HEAVY (Suretone) can’t but leave its metalcore peers in the dust.

Crafted with the guidance of Atlanta-based producer Matt Goldman (Underoath, The Chariot, Copeland), DROP DEAD, GORGEOUS -- DANNY STILLMAN (lead vocals), KYLE BROWNING (lead guitar, backing vocals), JAKE HANSEN (bass), DANNY COOPER (drums, percussion), DAN GUSTAVSON (rhythm guitar) -- ups its creative ante on the follow up to its 2007 breakthrough disc Worse Than A Fairy Tale. Drawing lyrically on real life experiences while fusing unexpected twists and turns to its forceful anthems, THE HOT N’ HEAVY is diverse and cohesive. To be blunt, it’s a song cycle that sucker punches listeners and then sucks them in like a Hoover.

End o' week musings

Spring has sprung and we're another week closer to my favorite season~ summer!

It was a good week, busy and fun. Beginning with a trip to Maggie's Pub in Santa Fe Springs last Friday with my friends Carin and Tom. I enjoyed a black and tan and a plate of corned beef and cabbage (piled so high that I had to take more than half of it home!). It was the last of the Friday night bands for a while and perhaps that's a good thing. The previous groups were good, but a little loud for a restaurant and this final offering, The Brats, was quieter, but a letdown.
The group is an older set of guys from the business world who are doing the band thing for "fun." Well, it isn't fun for us unless you leave your attitude at the door. They were not very friendly, they took a long time in between songs patting each other on the back for their perfomance and their fans were rude-- not tipping any of the waitstaff.

The Brats' music was mainly cover tunes from what I could tell. Mostly sleepy stuff and the kind of songs people sit around and get wasted to. This was not helping their cause, 'cuz at Maggie's the crowd wants to dance. Their musicianship was OK, but nothing to write home about. Like I said, at least they kept in turned down so we could still talk-- thank goodness or I might have been snoozing in my clam chowder!

I was up early on Saturday, heading out to the Association of Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) event at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park. My friend Lynn belongs to the club and can't get enough of rollercoasters. She's super cool too because she likes to share her fun and in addition to carting her boyfriend Cliff, she invited me and Ben. If these characters sound familiar, they are-- this is the same gang I hang with at the Gallery at the End of the World in Pasadena and went to Disneyland with last year. We make a good team for these outings.

We got to the park before it opened and took a maintenance tour of Sidewinder and rode on Montezooma and Jaguar. We made it to first in line for the Silver Bullet as the doors opened. It really didn't seem that crowded that day, as we made swift work of riding everything that we wanted and more.

My favorite coaster proved to be my nemesis as well. Xcelerator is awesome, going straight up for more than 150 feet, giving a slight twist and then going straight down and on. I love the thrill of not seeing anything but sky and ground.. but the thrill didn't like me. As we hit the slight twist on the way up something pulled in my shoulder and my arm has been a little sore since... Oh well, it will heal and it was worth it.

The other coaster I'm not fond of is Ghostrider. I love the length of the ride, the ups and downs, the views, but I hate the way it rattles your brain. I went on it twice, while Lynn went on it several times. I'm not a whimp, but I know to stop before I get a headache.

My other favorite ride was Silver Bullet. For the unfamiliar, you sit in a seat that has a tad of swing to it because you are hanging from the track above your head--your feet dangle freely. It's a little weird, but it's sooo smooth and fast and it feels like you're flying.

The ACE event included a chicken lunch with boysenberry pie for dessert. You could have other things, but Knott's does these the best. I fed my roll to the big fish, ducks and turtles in the pond nearby-- they seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. We also received a t-shirt and had refreshments after the park closes, plus extra ride time on a few of the attractions. It was a terrific day! Thank you Lynn for thinking of me and thank you Ben and Cliff for being good company.

Sunday I went to the Langham, Huntington Hotel and Spa in Pasadena for the kick-off of its new Chocolate Tea. This is decadence at its finest. There is a hint of chocolate in the sandwiches, downright evil desserts and luscious liquid chocolate to drink. And the setting is beautiful. I recommend this tea for special occasions as it is awesome. My story on the tea should publish soon, watch http://www.sgvn.com/ for it.

I've been writing like mad this week, so before I forget, be sure to visit http://www.sgvn.com/ for my stories on New Found Glory, Celtic Squall and the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, "Maritius" at the Pasadena Playhouse and "Eye in the Sky" at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.

Tonight I'm going to see Atomic Bomb Comedy (www.myspace.com/atomicbombcomedy ) at their monthly show in Whittier. I am planning to do a story on them for next month. Saturday is the Pasadena bloggers picnic in Farnsdale Park in Altadena and later I'll be heading out to Mr. T's in Highland Park to catch cyberpunkers Rebel Rebel. I was a member of Rebel Rebel for three years and have been friends with them forever (it seems). I had to quit after I hurt my back in an unrelated event and due to their demanding stage show, I couldn't return.

Rebel Rebel (http://www.rebelrebel.org/ ) is shock punk rock at its best. People leave their shows either disgusted or hankering for more. Yes, they're not for the squeamish, but they're lots of fun. Say hello if you drop in to see their show.

My other excitement coming up includes cleaning my house (yeah, I know, stop laughing), interviewing Marty Stuart, getting peek at the Pasadena Showcase House of Design in progress and hanging out with my special guy on my furlough day. Too much adventure?!? Never!

In rotation this week: Psychostick, Living Things, Lutah Fyah and 69 Eyes.

Photos we got 'em: Just my usual weird pet pics to bring some sunshine to your otherwise dull existence.

Thought o' the week: Find your motivation. I started doing the exercises recommended by my physical therapist and my knee began hurting worse. It was even uncomfortable when I was sitting still or laying down. I knew that would happen, as it takes a bit of pain to gain, but I was hoping it wouldn't be so bad. Still, I've kept at it all week and finally I'm feeling a bit better and the exercises are getting easier. Honestly, I would have preferred giving up and sitting on my tushie watching guilty-pleasure TV... but that wouldn't have gotten me anything but chunkier and more tired.

To keep myself going, I have devised a series of motivators. In the morning, I listen to the radio and do my early workout-- a little lighter set of moves, but they get me stretched, awake and ready to take on the world. Then, I keep my sneakers and workout clothes visible so when I get home, I change and get out the door for my walk, which leads to my evening exercise routine. I also keep a chart on the inside of my armoir where I note what exercise I got that day and if I ate well or poorly. Every Sunday I weigh and measure myself and chart it. This provides me with visible feedback on my progress to get back in shape and health.

Whatever you goal is, be creative and find ways to keep moving forward. Reward yourself when you are successful too. I treat myself to something new from the thrift store or a glass of wine and a bubble bath and other little things. By doing something good for yourself and making yourself better, you are a happier person and you can shine that happiness to make this world a better place too.

Judas Priest announces tour dates with Whitesnake

For the past few years, Judas Priest has unquestionably ruled the U.S. summer concert scene, having been a part of both the top-grossing Ozzfest and Metal Masters tours. And this summer, Priest has done it again, by uniting with Whitesnake for a series of stateside shows.

Priest will be celebrating the '30th Anniversary' of the classic album 'British Steel' (it was originally issued in April 1980), by performing the album in its entirety for the very first time ever live on stage!!! In addition they will be playing some old favorites.

Along with 1982's 'Screaming for Vengeance' and 1990's 'Painkiller,' 'British Steel' has long been considered one of metal's all-time classics. It was with this release that Priest truly broke through to the masses, with a pair of tracks that have become fixtures on rock radio - the enduring anthems "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight." But like all classic albums, there is not a single weak track detected on 'British Steel,' as evidenced by such standouts as the perennial concert highlight, "Metal Gods," as well as "Rapid Fire," "Grinder," "United," and "The Rage," among others.

Produced by Tom Allom, 'British Steel' was recorded at the Tittenhurst Park in England - which is a mansion owned at the time by former Beatle Ringo Starr, and previously owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. In 2001, the album was remastered and reissued with extra bonus tracks, and also, was the subject of an in-depth study as part of the popular 'Classic Albums' DVD series.

Judas Priest - singer Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis - remain as popular as ever to this day, confirmed once and for all upon the release of 2008's 'Nostradamus,' which became their highest-ever charting album in the U.S. Two years earlier, the group was the inaugural inductees into the 'VH1 Rock Honors.'

The forthcoming summer dates with Whitesnake are surely not to be missed by metalheads from coast tocoast, especially now that fans will be reintroduced up close and personal to the mighty 'British Steel.' Along with Priest, Whitesnake is certainly one of the most instantly identifiable names in all of hard rock. Priest and Whitesnake toured together in 2005 (in Mexico and South America), resulting in such a well-received and great package that since then, both groups have been planning to work together again. This summer, U.S. fans will finally get their wish.

"The opportunity to perform live on stage in its entirety the whole of 'BRITISH STEEL' is a dream come true for all of us! We're really excited and looking forward to presenting the album live on stage - fans will be able to enjoy a taste of true heavy metal when it was in its early, raw state!" said the group in a statement. "Plus, we will of course be throwing in a few other Priest classics!"

Tracks from Not Only…But Also have made waves on television, video games and online, continuing a trend The 88 began on their prior releases. Lead track “Coming Home” was heard in the premiere episode of 90210, while Gossip Girl showcased the piano-driven rocker “It’s A Lot”. The super-charged “Sons And Daughters” is a challenge to Rock Band 2 gamers. And in keeping with their DIY roots, their unique video for “Coming Home”, in which they spent the bulk of the video’s budget on free fuel for passing motorists at a local gas station, was featured on Spin.com and Yahoo’s “Who’s Next”.

ABOUT THE 88
Founded in Los Angeles in 2002, The 88 have released three albums – Kind of Light, Over and Over and Not Only… But Also. Aside from extensive touring in North America, they have appeared on numerous national talk shows including Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Last Call With Carson Daly. The 88 are lead singer/guitarist Keith Slettedahl, pianist Adam Merrin and drummer Anthony Zimmitti.

City of Pasadena accepting applications for Annual Arts Grants Program

The city of Pasadena is seeking applications for the 2009-2010 Annual Arts Grants Program.

Grants are available for arts and culture programs, arts education partnerships, festivals and parades, and support to individual artists. Last year the Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission, through the Cultural Affairs Division, awarded $138,500 to 20 organizations, events and artists.
Submissions must be received no later than 5 p.m. Monday, June 8, for funding July 9, 2009, to June 30, 2010.

The grants program is designed to support the work of individual artists, expand opportunities for residents to engage in the creative process, fund Pasadena’s cultural institutions and encourage arts education partnerships. Funding for festivals and parades expands the impact of cultural tourism within the city.

Free primary grant writing workshops are required for all first-time applicants and those who have not applied since 2001. Workshops will be Monday, March 30, and Thursday, April 30.

Annual Grants Program categories are:

1. Art and Culture Grant I, II and III: For non-profit arts organizations and their social service partners that offer professional arts programming such as exhibitions, performance, education, strategic planning and audience development, including community outreach and marketing. Organizations may receive up to $10,000 in one of three categories: organizations with budgets of less than $200,000; $200,000 up to and including $500,000; and those over $500,000.

Bar Celona to host "Foster Soles" benefit for Hillsides

With over 500,000 children in foster care nationwide, one Pasadena restaurant is stepping up to help those foster care children living in Los Angeles. Bar Celona, a modern Spanish tapas bar, restaurant and lounge, is hosting the launch of Hillsides “Foster Soles” on April 30.

Hillsides “Foster Soles,” an online auction of celebrity autographed shoes, will raise funds for the foster care children living at Hillsides, which creates safe places for children and families in Los Angeles County, including Pasadena. With the aim of also raising awareness of foster care issues, the online auction has already drawn the attention of many celebrities and their autographed shoes. Celebrities include Elton John and his band, Shia LeBeouf, cast of USA Television Network’s “Burn Notice” Jeffrey Donovan, Bruce Campbell, and Gabrielle Anwar, Jack Johnson, Dave Koz, Marlee Matlin’s “Dancing with the Stars” shoes as well as her dancing partner’s, Fabian Sanchez, Cheryl Farrell, among many more.

Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis has also donated shoes for the online auction. A world-renowned metal sculpture artist, Bruce Gray, has also donated a tabletop shoe sculpture which will be displayed.

At Bar Celona, celebrities will have entrance into the VIP lounge which includes complimentary Bar Celona signature sangria and Spanish champagne (cava). Additionally for their pleasure, Bar Celona will have an on-site sommelier to host a Spanish wine-tasting session in the VIP lounge with Spanish cheeses, meats and charcuterie and the chef’s selection of Spanish tapas. Guests will have an opportunity to bid on the celebrity autographed shoes, which will also be displayed at the venue, while sipping on signature sangria and savoring tapas. To add to the festivities, guests are encouraged to wear their funniest or wildest shoes for an additional evening contest.

Bar Celona and its sister restaurant, Villa SORRISO, are located in the historic Colorado Boulevard retail district of Old Pasadena, and are the creation of local restaurateurs Jack Huang and Karen Huang, who is also on the board of directors of the foster care charity. Set on a stage of rich crimson red and hues of mellow mustard, Bar Celona invokes the traditions of the traditional tapas bars of Spain, with handcrafted murals of ‘the running of the bulls,’ wine offerings geared toward those of the Spanish vineyards, house made sangrias, and the popular small plates that trigger a smiling sigh.

Guests who bid on April 30 will get a chance to vie for celebrity shoes with online visitors until the auction’s closing date, May 15.

Bar Celona, celebrities, and bidders of Hillsides “Foster Soles” can be assured that putting their best foot forward ensures a better pathway for foster care children.
