Getty Museum to offer Ring events

The J. Paul Getty Museum joins other Southland cultural institutions and the LA Opera for Ring Festival LA, a series of special events in connection with the first-ever presentation in Los Angeles of the four-opera drama The Ring of the Nibelung.

Ring Festival LA, the first significant citywide cultural festival since the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival, showcases a variety of exhibitions, symposia, conferences, and events throughout the spring. Enjoy art from the Renaissance to the fin de siècle with educators William Zaluski and Anna Sapenuk in this adult gallery course at the Getty Center. In lecture and gallery discussions, examine and interpret painting, sculpture, and decorative art while considering the lasting influence of mythology on works of art from the 16th through the 19th centuries. Open to 40 participants.

Since its original production in 1869, Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen has attracted scholarly and popular debate. In this 90-minute guided discussion, explore the connections between his four epic operas, classical mythology, and ancient theater through works of art in the Museum's collection. Open to 25 participants. A ticket is required; meet at the Tour Meeting Place outside the Museum Entrance. Tickets available beginning Thursday, April 15, at 9:00 a.m.


Marquis Seminar -- Wagner's Mythology: Roots and Inspiration

Richard Wagner culled from many sources—including ancient Greek drama—to create his masterwork Der Ring des Nibelungen (known as the "Ring Cycle"), four operas based on German and Scandinavian folklore. This Marquis Seminar features talks exploring the sources that compelled Wagner to create his magnum opus. The seminar at the Getty Villa features a day of lectures with a special presentation by LA Opera maestro James Conlon, tours of the Museum's antiquities collection, and a musical performance. Open to 200 participants. A ticket is required. Tickets available beginning April 15, at 9:00 a.m.
