End o' week musings

It's hard to concentrate today because I'm on Doo Dah countdown, but here goes....

Last Saturday we completed the last of the big tasks on creating Queen of Arts, the outgoing queen's float at McGinty's Gallery at the End of the World. A core of workers came out to help with the heavy work and some delicate painting too. I would like to thank Ben McGinty, Dave Lovejoy, Ngene Mwaura, Johnny Fox, Julie Klima, Eve Kessler, Mona the Black Widow Spider Lady and HRH Price Andrew for their time, talent and patience. Tomorrow, we celebrate!

In the evening I went to my friend Louise's house for a little pizza and chili get-together. We played the Ungame, answered trivia questions and had fun. I won a plastic tiki cup for my Jeopardy!-like knowledge lol!

My favorite part of the soiree was my masseuse friend describing a session with one of his harder-to-please clients. He said that she got up on the massage table, eagle spread her arms and legs and said, "You need to heal my mind, body and spirit." He responded, "OK, but we've only got an hour." I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe!

On Monday I went to Whittier to interview the metal band Throttle. Nice guys and very professional... their music is really good too. Watch for a story soon. They gig in Hollyweird, as well as Covina and Whittier.

Tuesday I would like to forget. I spent the morning in the dentist's chair having a filling redone on one of my furthest back top teeth. It took two rounds of shots to numb the area enough so I couldn't feel it, but I sure knew when the drill was going-- something like hours!! OK, it was really just over an hour for the total procedure, but it was so rough that my sweet dentist let me take two breaks... My mouth is still a bit sore.

Later in the day, I went to William Hallstrom's home to learn about knives. No, we weren't throwing them (for a change), we were cooking. I learned how to buy a knife and how to use one better for slicing, dicing and all that good prep stuff. Most exciting, I finally found out that the little curved mystery blade in my collection is a boning knife and William showed me how to use it correctly-- I am no longer intimidated by preparing chicken.

After we cut up all kinds of veggies for salad and stir-fry, we ate. Yummy! I got William to share his salad recipe for my story too, so you'll want to watch for that.

Today is a short day for me at work because I'm going to Mother Plucker Feather Company in Los Angeles to pick up my dress for the 33rd Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade tomorrow. I am excited and nervous. It may be too beautiful to wear!! But you know I will, as I love a parade, especially one that helps others.

The Doo Dah Parade benefits the Light Bringer Project which provides art and art education for children and the mentally ill. More reason for you to come out. It steps off at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in East Pasadena. Read further on my blog for info or visit or

After the parade tomorrow I will go to the American Legion for the party, then to the gallery for the float viewing. There's also a photo exhibit in the alley next to the gallery 5-10 p.m. To see both go to 2475 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. For more GATOW info visit

Sunday I plan to sleep and laze because next week my calendar is full of more adventure!

In rotation this week: The Randies, Joe Walla, Ken Waldman and other bits and pieces.

Photos we got 'em: Just a few pet pics from the usual places- enjoy!

Thought o' the week: Feel proud. Yeah, it might be a vice, but I'm proud of the Queen of Arts. I worked hard on the design and creation of the float and it came out great.

I owe a lot to the mentoring of Dave Lovejoy ( ), who also put in many hours and lots of talent to bringing my dream to fruition. I learned so much from him about using tools and unlikely materials, as well as color, composition and other art fundamentals.

I also owe the people I thanked above, as well as some not mentioned. Support on the project has been just as important as muscle.

Work hard and you will be rewarded. The pride in a job well done is not a sin, it's deserved. And don't forget all the people who helped you make it happen. And share the joy!

Keep on rockin'

Esotouric offers Weird West Adams crime bus tour

Esotouric's Weird West Adams Crime Bus Tour Reveals Strange Tales of a Neglected Neighborhood

WHAT: Esotouric's Weird West Adams Crime Bus Tour

WHEN: Saturday June 5, 12pm-4pm

WHERE: Departing from 2nd Avenue Park, at 2nd Avenue and West 25th Street in West Adams, one block north of Adams Blvd.

COST: $58/person (15% off for KCRW or KPCC members)

INFO:, 323-223-2767
On June 5, Esotouric, the offbeat bus adventure company that unearths fascinating criminal skeletons from L.A.'s civic closet, offers its occasional neighborhood true crime tour, WEIRD WEST ADAMS. West Adams locals and interested bystanders won't want to miss the chance to hear all the newly-unearthed dirt.

ABOUT THE TOUR: On this guided tour through the Beverly Hills of the early 20th Century, Crime Bus passengers thrill as Jazz Age bootleggers run amok, marvel at the Krazy Kafitz family's litany of murder-suicides, attempted husband slayings, Byzantine estate battles and mad bombings, visit the shortest street in Los Angeles (15' long Powers Place, with its magnificent views of the mansions of Alvarado Terrace), discover which fabulous mansion was once transformed into a functioning whiskey factory using every room in the house, and stroll the haunted paths of Rosedale Cemetery, site of notable burials (May K. Rindge, the mother of Malibu) and odd graveside crimes. Featured players include drunken ice cream men, the most famous dwarf in Hollywood, mass suicide ringleader Reverend Jim Jones, wacky millionaires who can't control their automobiles, human mole bank robbers, comically inept fumigators, kids trapped in tar pits, and dozens of other unusual and fascinating denizens of early Los Angeles.

There are even some celebrity sites along the route, including the death scenes of Motown soul sensation Marvin Gaye and 1920s star Angels baseball catcher Gus Sandberg. And the architecture too is to die for, as the Crime Bus rolls down the elegant streets of old West Adams, lined with gay mansions, adorable bungalows and signs of a century's decay which only enhance the neighborhood's charm.

Passengers on this eye-opening, funny and informative tour will forever see the West Adams district in a new light. It is highly recommended for natives and newcomers alike, crime and history buffs and anyone who likes to seek out the unexpected.

Esotouric's Richard Schave and Kim Cooper are proud members of LAVA - The Los Angeles Visionaries Association.

Katezjammer to tour in support of upcoming album

Norwegian all-female foursome Katzenjammer are set to release their debut album Le Pop, June 29 on Nettwerk Records. The quartet first stormed the States with their circus of a live show in Austin at SXSW last year. Their raucous sets include a rotation of up to 29 instruments on which that the four women are self-taught, including the tuba, the balalaika bass, drums, harmonica, piano, banjo, accordion, mandolin, guitar, melodica and trumpet.

Katzenjammer also caught the attention of David Byrne, who invited them to open his artist-curated stage at 2009’s Bonnaroo, alongside Santigold, the Dirty Projectors, Dave Byrne and Brian Eno, later ending their US run with a stop at Summerfest opening for Elvis Costello.

Le Pop, which was produced by Kåre Westrheim and Mike Hartung (Marit Larsen, Superfamily), showcases the ladies eclectic blend of genre influences. The album earned Katzenjammer a nomination for “Newcomer of the Year” at the Norwegian Grammy Awards, but also the distinct honor of opening the show with their hit single “A Bar In Amsterdam.”

Katzenjammer, which consists of Solveig Heilo, Anne Marit Bergheim, Turid Jørgensen and Marianne Sveen will kick off a US Tour this June in addition to joining the 2010 Lilith Tour, along with artists like Sarah McLachlan, Mary J. Bilge, Norah Jones, Loretta Lynn, Sugarland, Metric, Sia and more!

Dream Jam Band to release new kids' album

Math problem: When you add four music teachers and four entertainers, how many members of the Dream Jam Band do you have? The answer is 4, because Francine, Barry G, Maestro C, and Erin the Red are all music teachers AND entertainers who infuse the invigorating kid and family-friendly songs on 'Leave It In The Soup,' out July 13th (Dream Jam Productions), with a spirit of wonder and curiosity.

The Dream Jam Band's positive lyrics and bouncy rhythms encompass a broad range of influences, from The Beatles to Mozart, Duke Ellington to Woody Guthrie, and bring all members of the family to the party. All songs on ' Leave It In The Soup' are written by the band, played on 20 different musical instruments and produced by award-winning songwriter and producer Rick Chertoff (Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, Ron Howard’s The Grinch). They span the spectrum of rock, pop, blues, hip hop, sing-a-longs and classical, reflecting the band's belief that young children can synthesize musical ideas in a way that enhances learning.

Standout tracks on 'Leave It In The Soup' include:
- The upbeat sing-along rocker "Have A Party When You Get The Blues"
- A Mozart-derived operatic ode to Velcro "I Can't Tie My Shoes"
- And, a surf rock-inspired fan favorite "Bad Hair Day" featuring Maestro C on the saxophone

Listen to streams of these songs at:

Known for their musicality, theatricality and inventive stage costumes, the Dream Jam Band will premiere a new stage show at the International Children’s Festival at Cleveland's Ohio State Theater on May 7th and 8th. They will travel to the House of Kids at Irving Plaza in New York City on May 15th, and will continue to tour through the summer and fall. The Dream Jam Band's self-titled first album, released in 2008, featured 11 original songs, two of which, “Nicky Nicky Knock Knock” and “Look Around,” reached Number One at SiriusXM satellite radio.

The album was named to NPR's Top Ten Children’s and Family Albums List, won four Children’s Web Awards and received extensive airplay on kids’ programming across the USA.

Here's a little Gorillaz history for the uninitiated. Since Demon Days, a lot's changed for Gorillaz. There's been much madness, mayhem, kidnappings, explosions and evil Svengali Murdoc Niccals has taken over the fantastical floating island of garbage known as Plastic Beach.

With airborne pirates hot on his heels and moaning whales surrounding Plastic Beach, Murdoc Niccals clearly has just one choice: Plan a massive party, and let the new Gorillaz album loose upon London and the world. All you have to do is watch the cyborgian experience unfurl.

Come back to the MTV Buzzworthy Blog on Friday, April 30 at 5 p.m. ET to watch Gorillaz live from London. And then watch an on-demand performance after the show.

Cast Spells on tour in support of new vinyl

Next on the dish is the release of "Bright Works and Baton" on Vinyl from Cast Spells (Dovecote, RedEye). Originally released in 2009 on CD, This EP is incredibly limited first-time-on-vinyl-ever release and is delightfully sonically pleasing. Cast Spells is Dave Davison from Maps and Atlases. We think it's important to note that this isn't some weird vanity solo project of Dave's. He ACTUALLY tours on this record when he's not out with Maps. It's pretty safe to say if you're a Maps and Atlases fan you'll love this record.

Speaking of Maps, you can catch them at any of the tour dates below. Don't worry, one of Dave Davison's superpowers is he never rests. You'll be able to catch a Cast Spells show soon enough. Don't worry, we'll let you know.

Omni, Minus the Bear's fourth full length and first on Dangerbird Records [ADA], comes out on May 4th. After extensive touring in support of their last album, Planet of Ice, Minus the Bear wanted to incorporate that live power and intensity on Omni.

Thanks to the talent of producer Joe Chiccarelli (My Morning Jacket/White Stripes), Minus the Bear has brought that live energy without losing their... "quirky time signatures, hyperactive riffs, and prodigious hooks. There’s a lot more groove, a lot more soul, a lot more feeling that comes across" ( record is a truly honest evolution of their sound and vision. It's a little rock, a little pop/electro, and a little funk with those ever-so-familiar hooks and melodies. You have to check this out.

Audiofile releases Backline Calc 2.0 update app

Audiofile Engineering, a leading audio software developer for Mac, has released Backline Calc 2.0, an update to their professional music calculator app for Apple iPhone and iPod touch.

Backline Calc is an indispensible tool for musicians, music students and teachers, DJs, audio and video engineers and broadcast technicians, featuring more than 20 calculators and converters to cover virtually any musical situation, conveniently written for Apple's iPhone OS.

"Playing, teaching, practicing or writing music, mixing live sound and producing music all involve calculations and conversions of musical and technical data," says Matthew Foust of Audiofile Engineering. "Backline Calc lets you calculate musical, acoustic, video and even electrical data quickly and easily, so you can get on with the music and not the math."

The Backline Calc app is free to download and includes three basic calculators: Note Length, Frames to Time code, and File Size. The rest of the calculators can be purchased and unlocked directly from within the app. The length calculators include Bar and Song Length, Song Length, Beats to Tempo, Time to Samples, Compare Tempos, Change Tempo and Sum Times.

The pitch calculators convert Note Name, MIDI Notes, Frequency, and Wavelength. The additional time code calculators include Frames to Time code, Convert Time code and Change Time code. The acoustics calculators include Distance to Time, Time to Distance and Sound Pressure Level (SPL).

The electrical category includes Compare Power and Compare Voltage calculators.

There is also a Files calculator for converting sizes of audio files.

Pierce the Veil to tour in support of upcoming album

San Diego's PIERCE THE VEIL will release their sophomore album, SELFISH MACHINES, via Equal Vision Records on June 22, shortly before kicking off Warped Tour on June 25. Recorded with producer Mike Green (Paramore, Set Your Goals) at his studio in Los Angeles, the 12-track set features catchy pop hooks paired with metal tinged guitars and aggressive vocals. It’s the follow up to 2007's critically acclaimed A FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC, which was recorded with Casey Bates (Chiodos, Portugal. The Man).

Fans itching to hear new music sooner than later can log onto the band’s Myspace page where "The Boy Who Could Fly" is currently streaming.

SELFISH MACHINES is now available for pre-order through A deluxe edition will also be available, including the CD, bonus tracks, a “making of” DVD, and two 2.5-inch vinyl figurines based on the two characters in the album cover artwork. The band--Vic Fuentes (vocals), brother Mike Fuentes (drums), Tony Perry (guitar), and Jaime Preciado (bass)--took inspiration from their fans and years of non-stop touring into consideration when writing SELFISH MACHINES.

"We kept our fans in mind with every song that we wrote because we knew that in a few months we would be sharing these songs with them at shows," says Vic.

Working with Mike Green was an easy decision for the band.

As Vic explains, “We chose Mike Green for two reasons: one, his records sound amazing and two, he is a very down to earth and passionate person. We wanted to make sure that the new album will sound great and we also wanted to work with someone that has the same love for what they do as we do. We have 100% confidence that we made a very special album with Mike.”

And what about the album title?

"We are all in one way or another selfish machines,” says Vic. “In no way is this a negative thing, it's human nature. We all have natural tendencies to want, love, and take."

He adds, "It's about that 'evil' thing inside of us that is really not evil at all, it's just there and always will be inside all of us."

Pierce The Veil’s new album was recently named one of Alternative Press magazine’s “Most Anticipated of 2010.” As they declared: “Short of having a song specifically written about you, the upcoming release from San Diego post-hardcore four-piece Pierce The Veil might be as close to having music made directly for you as you’ll get.” And the magazine had praised A FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC: “Their schizophrenic attack cross-pollinates adventurous post-hardcore with Swiss-Army rock smarts and soaring choruses…”

In touring news, the band perform at a handful of radio festivals next month before heading out once again on the Warped Tour starting June 25 in Pomona, CA.

"We are very excited to be on this year’s Warped Tour,” says Vic.” “It almost killed us missing last year and we can't wait to play it again!"

Concrete Blonde on tour

Forget about Twilight and True Blood, Concrete Blonde’s landmark album Bloodletting is turning 20 and the real vampires are coming to have a drink and walk around a city near you! Concrete Blonde will tour the US for the first time in 7 years with a set list celebrating the album and their career. Released in 1990, Bloodletting spawned the top 20 hit “Joey,” as well as Concrete Blonde classics “Tomorrow, Wendy”, “Caroline”, and “The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden”. It quickly became their most successful album.

Lead singer Johnette Napolitano explains how the tour came about: “People started emailing me and calling me up and telling me that it was the twentieth anniversary of Bloodletting, which had “Joey” on it and was a big hit for us all over the world. My dad passed away recently and was a big fan of the band and it occurred to me that a twentieth anniversary’s only going to happen once and that my dad would have said that it’s a good idea and that we should do it. So we knocked it together and it looks like it’s going to be fun, doing twenty-year-old vampire songs should be fun.”

Concrete Blonde formed in Los Angeles in 1982 and became one of the most beloved alternative bands in the US. Characterized by Napolitano’s inimitable voice, brutally honest lyrics, and the band’s fearless sound that ranges from punk to ballads to Latin music, Concrete Blonde are true originals whose influence can be felt far and wide. Beyond Bloodletting, the band is responsible for classic alternative songs including “Still in Hollywood”, “God is a Bullet”, and their iconic cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Everybody Knows”. Don’t miss your chance to see these legends live!

Harmonikids to help children in Haiti

In the second week of May, Blues musician Gary Allegretto will take his nonprofit organization Harmonikids ( on a music therapy mission to aid children in Port Au Prince, Haiti who are not only earthquake survivors but who are also “restaveks” – a Creole word used for those who are victims of child slavery.

World-recognized as a powerful and effective mode of communication, restoration, and healing music therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. Harmonikids is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides music therapy to special needs children worldwide using harmonicas and entertaining lessons. Since 1985 founding director Gary Allegretto has been actively providing the therapeutic healing power of music to kids with incredible physical and emotional challenges. His widespread and diverse missions have included those traumatized by such natural disasters as the tsunami in Indonesia and Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana.

Winner of the recent Alternate Roots Magazine's Songs for Social Change Contest, Gary Allegretto has received recognition both as a musician and humanitarian. He was gifted his first harmonica from his ailing grandfather as a small child, and has been giving the same gift of music and joy to special needs children through Harmonikids for 25 years and ongoing. His musical talents have become his passport to stages worldwide and more; his music has received awards and critical acclaim, reached the top of radio charts, been featured in soundtracks for motion pictures, and received multiple Grammy nomination considerations.

In Allegretto’s words “Harmonikids effectively provides these children shiny new harmonicas and gentle, entertaining music lessons in the most devastating time of their life. In spite of their hardship, kids are irresistibly drawn to the harmonica with it’s child-friendly simplicity, pocket-sized portability, and warm voice-like tone. In it they find a way to express themselves. In addition to the post-traumatic stress relieving benefits, I have seen Harmonikids programs effectively replenish self-esteem, confidence, hope, and joy into children’s lives. Simply put, Harmonikids provides the healing power of music to nurture their spirits and help them return to being children again…. or as I like to say, they find the therapeutic joy of music ~ right under their nose!”

Harmonikids' Haitian mission is made possible with the support of friends and organizations. The Restevek Foundation ( are providing coordination, logistical, and on-the-ground support. Volunteer Marc Lempert (director of harmonica documentary "Pocket Full Of Soul") will assist. Hohner Harmonicas Inc. ( has generously donated 1000 harmonicas for the cause.

Harmonikids needs your help! Individuals may contribute by making tax-deductible donations directly on Harmonikids website, or hold fundraising events such as benefit concerts and cause-oriented functions. If you can help in other ways, Harmonikids would love to hear from you! Your support, generosity, and efforts will allow Harmonikids to continue to bring relief to those less privileged. Everyone can help make a difference.

Pasadena Showcase House helps Pasadena Master Chorale

According to Jeffrey Bernstein, Artistic Director of the Pasadena Master Chorale (PMC), the chorale has been “awed and overwhelmed” by the support it has received from the community as it embarked upon its first full season this year. Concerts have sold out, an educational outreach program where members of PMC mentor young singers at all three high schools and Washington Middle School in the Pasadena Unified School District is in full swing…and, now, the Chorale has received its first grant – a gift of $2000 from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA).

“Receiving such a testimonial of support from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is a tremendous honor and vote of encouragement,” says Bernstein. “We are thrilled to have the PSHA joining our ‘family’ at the Pasadena Master Chorale and look forward to welcoming PSHA to our performances for seasons to come. And with auditions coming up this August, perhaps some members will even wind up singing with us!”

According to Phyllis Wilburn, chairman of PSHA’s Gifts and Grants committee, the organization is equally excited to make the acquaintance of the Pasadena Master Chorale. “Our members are a diverse group of women from throughout Southern California, but we share a core belief in the power and beauty of music to change lives. The Pasadena Master Chorale shares this commitment wholeheartedly. We can’t wait to see what next season brings with the Chorale!”

Plans are afoot, Bernstein promises. But in the meantime the ensemble is busy preparing for its 2010 season finale performances of Brahms’ Requiem on Saturday June 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 13 at 4 p.m. at Altadena Community Church in Altadena.

“The generous gift from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is in support of the Brahms Requiem,” says Bernstein. “The Requiem is a mass for the dead, yes, but it’s also a work of enormous beauty and hope. And isn’t this exactly what the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts has strived to promote for over 60 years – the beauty of music and the hope great music brings to all of us?”

Lunchables and Kevin Jonas launch "Field Trips for All"

Hands-on experiences like field trips help engage children in learning that can open their eyes to the world beyond the classroom. That’s why Lunchables Lunch Combinations is teaming up with pop music star, Kevin Jonas, of the world famous Jonas Brothers, to help deserving kids across the country go on an inspiring, educational experience with the launch of the program, “Field Trips for All.”

Field Trips On The DeclineAccording to a 2009 report from The American Association of School Administrators, it’s estimated that over the course of the current school year, the number of school districts eliminating field trips will increase by 56%. That’s more than 30,000 schools.*

To help provide kids with the experiences to show them they can do great things, the Lunchables team is working with Kevin Jonas to kick off the program that will provide 50 deserving classrooms nationwide with unforgettable learning experiences they might otherwise not have.

“Field trips can play a critical role in helping open a child’s eyes to the possibilities of what they can do and become,” said Darin Dugan, senior director of marketing, Lunchables. “As a brand that’s committed to helping kids realize their full potential, we’re excited to launch this program which helps provide access to a variety of fun and educational opportunities that we hope will help shape their development.”

Through June 1, 2010, to nominate a deserving classroom, go to and submit a nomination. From all nominations received, 50 deserving classrooms will be selected to go on an inspiring, educational experience.

Kevin Jonas Serves As Celebrity Line Leader for Lucky LA Kids

To help kick-off the “Field Trips for All” program, Kevin Jonas accompanied a group of students from Manhattan Place Elementary School in Los Angeles to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. As part of their adventure, the kids were given the VIP treatment as they learned about all things aquatic, including viewing a reconstructed 63-foot-long Humbolt Fin Whale as well as taking a unique tour with an ocean curator discussing the preservation of skeletons and shells.

“I remember my first field trip to Liberty Science Center. It was one of the best parts of going to school – being with friends, learning about new things and having fun!” said Kevin Jonas. “I’m excited to work with the Lunchables team to help kick-off the “Field Trips for All” program, and help give deserving kids a chance to discover new things and get inspired by a great experience.”
For the kids making the excursion to the Museum, this was a special treat as it was the first field trip they experienced this year, and in some cases, the first field trip some of them had experienced, ever.

“Although most of my students live close to the ocean, many of them know very little about it,” said Khristi Philips, teacher, Manhattan Place Elementary School. “I made a promise that I would find a fun way to help them learn more about the topic, so I’m really excited that the Lunchables team provided us with this opportunity. This was a special day for the kids that I know has helped bring what I’m teaching them to life in a memorable way.”

Free Admission To Select Field Trip Locations To help families across the country experience the inspirational power of a field trip, on Saturday, May 1, 2010, families can take their own field trip to select locations courtesy of Lunchables. The following museums will offer free entry on a first-come, first-serve free basis*:

Chicago, Ill. – Museum of Science & Industry
Houston, Texas – Houston Museum of Natural Science Permanent Exhibit Halls
Indianapolis, Ind. – The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis
Orlando, Fla. – Orlando Science Center
San Diego, Calif. – Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

Introducing Project Potential

The “Field Trips For All” program is the first effort from the Lunchables team’s new initiative called Project Potential. Aimed at empowering kids with opportunities that help them realize their full potential, Project Potential will provide enriching encounters kids otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to experience.

Revolver Golden Gods holding guitar auction to aid West Memphis Three defense fund

America’s premiere hard-rock and heavy-metal awards show, the Revolver Golden Gods presented by Epiphone, has donated two guitars, signed by the event’s winners, performers, and presenters, to raise money for the West Memphis Three defense fund.
The WM3 are wrongfully-convicted Arkansas men—Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, who are currently serving life sentences in prison, and Damien Echols, who is on death row (find out more at They were arrested in June 1993 and convicted of murdering three elementary school children in 1994. In July 2007 the results of DNA testing, which was not available at the time of their trials, proved the three should never have been convicted of these heinous crimes.
The first guitar is a Zakk Wylde Graveyard Disciple, designed by the Black Label Society frontman and former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist, who was awarded the Best Guitarist Award at the 2010 Revolver Golden Gods. It features a coffin-shaped body, mother-of-pearl “cross” inlays on the headstock, block fingerboard position markers, contoured double pin-stripe edges, ebony finish, and black hardware.
Signatures on the Graveyard Disciple include those of Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, Kerry King of Slayer, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Zakk Wylde, and Chuck Billy and Eric Peterson of Testament.
The second guitar, a Les Paul Prophecy Custom, features the signatures of Slash, Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, Kerry King of Slayer, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Zakk Wylde, Chuck Billy and Eric Peterson of Testament, and Ben Weinman of the Dillinger Escape Plan.
The auction will last for 17 days—from May 24th to June 10th —one day for each year the West Memphis Three have spent behind bars. June 3, 2010, will mark the 17th anniversary of when Echols, Misskelley, and Baldwin were placed behind bars for a crime they did not commit.

All auction proceeds go to the WM3 defense fund via ATA, a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization.

The starting bid for each instrument has been set at $999.
Revolver’s Golden Gods issue of the magazine hits newsstands on May 11. It features an exclusive interview with Damien Echols and excerpts from Marilyn Manson’s speech on his behalf at the award show.
Highlights from the REVOLVER GOLDEN GODS presented by Epiphone will air on VH1 Classic on May 22, 2010.

Lee DeWyze releases album

It’s easy to see that AMERICAN IDOL top finalist and Chicago native LEE DeWYZE is not only being hailed as the next Daughtry, but is garnering amazing praise from the AMERICAN IDOL judges. But, before DeWYZE came to the attention of the hit-making franchise, he was a struggling musician, working with a small Chicago label called Wuli Records. AMERICAN IDOL judge Kara DioGuardi declared Lee's voice “a good fit for radio right now.” Ellen DeGeneres has called his performances “great,” and the hard to please Simon Cowell has declared that Lee is “head and shoulders above everyone else,” “the best singer [among the group of men],” and “may be the one to beat.”

Sire Records artist Evan Taubenfeld has announced the release of his debut album Welcome to the Blacklist Club. Welcome to the Blacklist Club will be available exclusively online starting May 18, 2010.

Produced by John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Switchfoot, Lifehouse), Welcome to the Blacklist Club is a self-assured set of thoroughly addictive, radio-ready pop-rock anthems that showcase Taubenfeld’s melodic gifts, driving rhythmic sensibility, and engaging personality on such tracks as first single “Pumpkin Pie,” “Boy Meets Girl” and “Cheater of the Year.”

“Pumpkin Pie,” a quintessential song for summer, premieres today on AOL Music’s It hits radio in June.

Fans of Avril Lavigne will already be familiar with Taubenfeld’s musical talent. The 26-year-old Baltimore native was Lavigne’s musical director and lead guitarist from 2001 to 2004. He co-wrote several tracks on her last two albums, including the gold single “Don’t Tell Me” from Under My Skin and “Hot” from her latest release The Best Damn Thing, and toured the world with her in support of her 6x-platinum debut Let Go. He has also collaborated on her upcoming release.

a-ha coming to Los Angeles

Multi-million selling Norwegian trio a-ha will return to North America next week for 7 shows, before heading back to Europe for the final leg of their year-long world-wide Farewell Tour. The band will perform together for the very last time in Oslo on 4 December 2010.

Following a fantastic international career spanning 25 years and over 35 million albums sold, a-ha’s Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy will perform their final shows together exactly 25 years after the release of the band’s multi-platinum debut album Hunting High & Low and debut single “Take On Me”, which reached number 1 in 27 countries including the USA. Since that time, “Take On Me” has been played 3 million times on American radio… the equivalent of 375 times a day for 22 years!

In the mid 80’s the Norwegian trio created teenage hysteria and general pandemonium wherever they went. All told, the band has released 9 studio albums in 25 years, and toured the world many times (more than 500 concerts in 33 countries to be exact), including the legendary show at Maracana Stadium, Rio De Janeiro in 1991 which earned a Guinness World Record for the largest-ever audience attendance at a paid concert – 196,000 people (George Michael, Prince and Guns N' Roses managed to gather only sixty thousand each).

In 2006 the band received the ‘Q Inspiration Award’ in honor of their lasting musical influence. The band returned to the UK Top 5 in 2009 with the album Foot Of The Mountain. In recent years the focus has shifted to the musical legacy they will leave behind, inspiring a whole generation of artists such as Coldplay and Keane to Kanye West, Oasis, The Strokes, Robbie Williams and U2.

The band would like to thank their fans and everyone who has contributed to their amazing journey and say, “We’ve literally lived the ultimate boy’s adventure tale, through a longer, more rewarding career than anyone could hope for. Doing this now will give us a chance to get more involved in other meaningful aspects of life, be it humanitarian work, politics, or whatever else – and of course through new constellations in the field of art and music. We are retiring as a band, not as individuals. Change is always difficult and it is easy to get set in one’s ways. Now it is time to move on.”

In keeping with their interest in humanitarian and global causes, a-ha still own a sizeable part of the Amazon rainforest as part of a 1980's reforestation/preservation scheme.

Shakira's "Waka Waka" selected as official song for FIFA World Cup

FIFA and Sony Music Entertainment today announced that Waka Waka (This Time For Africa), written and co-produced by global superstar Shakira, has been chosen as the Official Song of the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The song will be performed by Shakira together with South African artist Freshlyground at the Closing Ceremony before the FIFA World Cup Final on July 11 in Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium. All proceeds from the song will benefit FIFA's Official Campaign of the 2010 FIFA World Cup 20 Centers for 2010.

The song combines Afro-Colombian instrumentation and rhythms with a rousing Soca beat and Southern African guitar. The chorus borrows from a favorite Cameroonian marching chant made popular by the group Golden Voices.

"The Official Song is as much awaited by the fans as the Mascot or the Logo. It is part of the identity of the world's most exciting sport's event. This song is the personification of the African rhythm and identity and sets the pace for this unique event. I am looking forward to hear the song throughout the tournament and watch it performed by Shakira and Freshlyground at the Final", said Joseph S. Blatter, FIFA President.

"I am honored that Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) was chosen to be part of the excitement and the legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup," said Shakira. "The FIFA World Cup is a miracle of global excitement, connecting every country, race, religion and condition around a single passion. It represents an event that has the power to unite and integrate, and that's what this song is about."

Shakira continued, "African music is so inspiring and is poised to take its place on the global pop culture stage. I was proud to be able to work with one of South Africa's most acclaimed groups, Freshlyground."

The song was co-produced by Shakira's frequent collaborator, John Hill.

"We are thrilled to have collaborated with Shakira on Waka Waka (This Time For Africa), especially as we feel that the song captures the spirit and energy of the African World Cup," said Zolani Mahola of Freshlyground. "We are certain the song will inspire people around the world to celebrate the gathering of nations at the place where it all started. Here in Africa!"

The song will be launched on April 28, 2010 and made available for download through digital retail outlets the week of May 11. It also will be included on Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album to be released the week of May 31 by Sony Music Entertainment. A Spanish language version of the track, Waka Waka (Esto es Africa), will be made available in certain markets.

Proceeds from the album will benefit FIFA's 20 Centers for 2010 initiative, whose aim is to achieve positive social change through football by building twenty Football for Hope centres for public health, education and football across Africa, and other African charities.

Another education focused campaign co-founded by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan and co-chaired by FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter is 1GOAL, a campaign that is championing global education. 1GOAL recently named Shakira an ambassador, adding her voice to the campaign's call that the lasting legacy of this year's FIFA World Cup be that every child can exercise their right to an education. Supported by some of the biggest names in the global football community and its governing body FIFA, Shakira will be campaigning with 1GOAL to ensure world leaders provide the funding to make universal access to education a reality for the 72 million children currently unable to go to school.

"Through 20 Centers for 2010 and 1GOAL, FIFA and its partners have committed to creating a lasting legacy of education for all - an issue that has been close to my heart for many years," says Shakira.

In addition to her performance at the final match, Shakira will be one of the headline performers at the official FIFA World Cup Kick-off Celebration Concert on June 10, broadcast from Orlando Stadium in Soweto/Johannesburg South Africa.

The video for Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) will be available in mid-May in standard definition as well as in 3D.
