Travis Barker supports One Life One Chance

Legendary drummer Travis Barker along with FSAS (Famous Stars and Straps) has teamed up with the 'One Life One Chance' (OLOC) organization headed by Toby Morse, the front man of the punk rock band H20. OLOC is an organization that promotes a Drug Free culture. Toby introduces today's youth to his friends who all live clean healthy Positive lifestyles to show kids that they too can be Drug Free and be cool too.

Morse travels to schools to inform elementary through high school students about cool alternatives to alcohol and drugs and having a positive mental attitude.

"From the streets of NY to the stages worldwide and to the schools, the message is clear; just because people are covered in tattoos from head to toe, and play music for a living, does not mean they are druggies, or thugs. OLOC breaks all kinds of stereotypes” Morse states.

In an industry famous for drug use, drug-related deaths and overall self-destructive behavior, Toby chose to never experiment with alcohol, tobacco or drugs and came to his friends for some help with his cause. Barker can relate, as he is a musician with a ton of tattoos and a target for labeling, it is because of that and Toby's passion that got Travis involved.

Barker says "I love and support what Toby is doing for the youth. It's good that these kids can see that not every rock star is a drug addict and he [Morse'] is such a positive all-around role model for them. Most people that come and speak at a schools are immediately written off by the kids; but Toby looks like them and they can relate to him. I am getting involved to help any school Toby speaks at that is in need of instruments and / or a music program."

Through Barker's involvement some very lucky schools in NYC will be given entire drum kits. Barkers clothing brand Famous Stars and Straps is also involved.

"Toby, a long time friend and Family member of Famous Stars and Straps, approached the company about his ongoing efforts to spread the message of living with a "positive mentalattitude". Toby's passion is undeniable and sincere, and understanding that kids all across America may benefit from Toby's message, we wanted to provide any support we could. If it's providing promotional goods or helping him get to schools who can't afford to have a speaker, we understand that Toby's message of PMA (positive mental attitude) and way of life is something we all could use."

Elton John to perform at benefit for American Foundation of Equal Rights

Sir Elton John will perform a concert on Wednesday, January 19 at a private home in Beverly Hills to raise funds for the American Foundation for Equal Rights. The Foundation’s case, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, is the federal constitutional challenge against Prop. 8. The Foundation was victorious in federal district court earlier this year, and will argue before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on December 6.

“We are deeply honored to have the support of Sir Elton John,” said Chad Griffin, Board President of the American Foundation for Equal Rights. “The American Foundation for Equal Rights stands for the enduring principle that all Americans are created equal, and believes that ending state-sanctioned discrimination is a critical step we must take toward ending the hate crimes and suicides that continue to claim the lives of young Americans.”

The event will be held at the "Green Acres" estate of Ron Burkle.

Ticket information is available by contacting events@afer.org. The event's proceeds will support the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the sole sponsor of the Perry case. The Foundation's legal team is headed by Theodore B. Olson and David Boies, opposing attorneys in the Bush v. Gore case that decided the presidency in 2000. The American Foundation for Equal Rights is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Sir Elton John's performance comes off the heels of an art auction in New York that raised $600,000 for the Foundation that drew support from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Barbara Bush (daughter of President George W. Bush), and Google Chairman Eric Schmidt. The auction included works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Diane Arbus.

In September 2010, the Foundation garnered more than $1.3 million in support from an event that drew together a surprising array of GOP and Wall Street leaders.

The American Foundation for Equal Rights, which launched the Perry case just 18 months ago, has endeavored to expand equality for all Americans by linking marriage equality to the nation's founding constitutional principles, including the right of all Americans to equal protection under the law. Its coalition of support has grown to include a diverse and unprecedented array of leaders including Julian Bond (past Chairman of the NAACP), Dolores Huerta (co-founder with Cesar Chavez of the UFW), the California NAACP, MALDEF, Ken Mehlman (former Chairman of the Republican National Committee and top adviser to President George W. Bush), major LGBT civil rights and legal organizations, and thousands of grassroots supporters across the nation. Its advisory board is co-chaired by John Podesta (White House Chief of Staff in the Clinton Administration and head of the Center for American Progress) and Robert Levy (head of the Cato Institute).

"Fourteen times the Supreme Court has stated that marriage is a fundamental right of all individuals. This case tests the proposition whether the gay and lesbian Americans among us should be counted as 'persons' under the 14th Amendment, or whether they constitute a permanent underclass ineligible for protection under that cornerstone of our Constitution," attorneys Olson and Boies wrote in their brief to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

"More than 30 years ago, the United States Supreme Court recognized that marriage is one of the basic rights of man," Olson and Boies wrote in their original filing in the Perry case, referring to the Court's decision in Loving v. Virginia, which struck down bans on interracial marriage.

Peelander-Z, the Japanese action comic punk band based in New York City, recently wrapped up two-plus-months of US touring that saw the band playing to the biggest crowds of its career including a performance at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest that will continue to be talked about next year. Known for its manic, high energy show, Peelander-Z has been touring in support of its new P-TV-Z album attracting the attention of new fans and also that of the Progressive Global Agency, booking home to R.E.M. among others which has signed the band and will send Peelander-Z back on the road in 2011.

Following up P-TV-Z ‘s “E-I-E-I-O” single and video (Peelander Z’s homage to “Old MacDonald Had A Farm”), the band is offering a new MP3 from P-TV-Z, “How Are USA,” to honor the completion of over 50 shows around North America. And how is USA anyway? Well, Whitney Matheson at USA Today responds by saying “I love these guys!” and posting the P-TV-Z album track “Go! Rio!” in her USA Today column and podcast, “Pop Candy.” Grab it HERE.

Also fresh off the editing bay, a new video for the P-TV-Z track “Taco Taco Tacos” which, contrary to any thoughts to the contrary, is about tacos! Lady Lazarus to release album

[ONE NIGHT MUSIC SESSION]: http://vimeo.com/10244628

San Jose’s Melissa Ann Sweat recently drove cross-country, relocating to Savannah, Georgia to form new roots for her music project, Lady Lazarus. The multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist (she plays all of the instruments on her debut album Mantic) will also see her poetry published in two literary magazines this winter just as she begins a string of regional live dates around her new hometown.

Sweat began Lady Lazarus in 2008 when she started teaching herself keyboard, and writing and recording songs in her San Francisco studio apartment. She had been an artist and writer nearly all her life and credits her fluidity in picking up songwriting to her long-time interest in writing poetry.

Despite music being a new foray for Sweat, Lady Lazarus has received some impressive early local and national attention with a favorable Pitchfork track review of “The Eye In The Eye of The Storm” and an intimate and charming performance for the expertly filmed One Night Music series.

The Lady Lazarus album Mantic will receive a national release on January 18th, 2011 via the artist’s own Apartment Life Records and Sweat’s poetry will appear in December issues of Outlet (www.outlet-mag.com) and The Broken City (www.thebrokencitymag.com). Lady Lazarus will also be playing regional shows around the East coast in support of Mantic throughout the winter.

Brand Nubian to release album

FrankRadio and iHipHop Distribution are proud to announce the highly anticipated follow-up to 2009's "Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture: Enter The Dubstep Vol. 1." On December 21st, the freshest sounds in underground electronic music will once again encounter the classic hip-hop stylings of yet another foundational group of legends: Brand Nubian.

After the wild success of Vol. 1, it only felt right for its producers and A&R's to embark on a new journey down the same road. Brand Nubian holds a unique position in hip-hop history. Universally respected as pioneers of a new way of thinking during the "golden-era" moment of the early 90's, Brand Nubian's political, social and cultural messages were delivered with a heavy dose of hardcore. With this 2nd installment in the ground-breaking series, "Enter The Dubstep" continues to trailblaze the collaboration between Dubstep and Hip-Hop, bringing hard bass and gritty lyrics together as none have done before. As Dubstep continues to push itself into mainstream ears, this album continues to push the boundaries of both genres.

Eric Clapton to tour in support of new album

Directly on the heels of Eric Clapton’s recent new album released to strong critical acclaim, the artist announced initial dates for his 2011 touring that will encompass the West Coast of the U.S. in the Spring to be followed by a run of shows in Ireland and the U.K. in May 2011. His Los Angeles stop will take place at the Gibson Amphitheatre on Tuesday, March 8. Tickets go on sale Monday, December 6 at 10 AM.

Critics have been raving about the latest Clapton album as a new and inspiring body of work by one of the world’s most legendary guitar players. Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, the album features an all star cast of musical collaborations starting with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks and keyboardist Walt Richmond—and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint and Derek Trucks. Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.

Clapton has assembled an impressive band for the 2011 tour which will consist of long-time touring partners: Steve Gadd (drums), Willie Weeks (bass), Chris Stainton (keyboards) along with Michelle John and Sharon White as backing vocalists.

Sue Bell releases holiday album

Not to be passed up, this impressive album marks Sue Bell's third recording. This collection of Christmas songs lends itself to a mixture of jazz and classical pieces, beautifully woven together and performed, making it quickly and clearly evident to any listener that everyone involved is equipped with the chops to pull off this challenging combination flawlessly.

Featured for the first time, the players that have accompanied the Seattle Songstress for over the past few years at live events are Chris Morton/Piano, Rachael Contorer/Bass, Doug Ostgard/Sax and Flute and Matt Page/Drums.

The album also introduces vocalist Marilyn Takamaru, who sings a harmonic layer to Sue's melody. The sound created by the two voices is simply exquisite and so reminiscent of something you might hear out of the classic Golden Age happening in the 1940's and 50's.

Also included are special guests Michael Gray, violinist from Pearl Django, one of America's most respected and busiest hot style groups; Milo Petersen, performing with some of the world's finest entertainers and one of Seattle's favorite guitar players and first call for Jazz Alley Artists coming into town; Steve Allen, seven-time Emmy winner and Grammy nominee on acoustic guitar; and Page Smith, solo cellist for the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra and one of the region's most beloved chamber musicians.

This is an amazing recording showcasing some of Seattle's finest talent. Merry Christmas, beautiful Emerald City; this group aims to make you proud!

Toby Tune releases album

www.TobyTune.com
www.MoviesInTheJungle.com
www.DoggieAdventureDVD.com

In a musical career now sprawling across six decades, Harley Toberman (aka Toby Tune) has always done things very much his own way.

Since writing his first song at the age of 12, to playing at hippie love-ins with his 60s ensembles, to his later career as a solo composer and performer in his own right, Toby Tune has ploughed his own furrow throughout.

His latest album, the third released under his current name, sees Toby Tune once again use his quirky take on life and music to push the boundaries of originality. The CD, ‘Coming Attractions’, is a medley of soundtracks for imagined movies. It is a collection of orchestral instrumentals that bring to mind the great soundtrack composers such as Ennio Morricone and Philip Glass.

The unusual nature of this project fits perfectly with Toby Tune’s history as a musician. His other works include a video he directed and produced called Doggie Adventure, which would go on to win awards, and a collection of archival stock music called ‘The Show Starts in 45 Minutes’: an album designed to provide a countdown for home movie screenings.

To say, therefore, that Toby Tune is an original is no exaggeration! One of his mid-‘60s recordings with the band The H.T.3 even preceded the advent of punk by more than a decade…

With the new album, a collection of brilliantly imaginative odes to the beauty of cinema, Toby Tune is likely to capture even more hearts, He admits that the appeal of the music will be niche, but that makes it all the more special for the lucky few who will be touched by its simple beauty.

Having semi-retired from his previous day job of running Toby’s Tunes recording studio, he has moved to Costa Rica with his wife and is finally able to devote his time to his twin passions of movies and music making.

‘Coming Attractions’ is the perfect example of how these two passions, combined with an endlessly inventive mind, can create original, uplifting and constantly surprising music.

This is an album that will have pride of place in many an offbeat record collection. And deservedly so.

‘Coming Attractions’ is available to buy on iTunes and all good download sites.

Danny Elfman on KCRW today and releasing new music collection

Acclaimed film composer Danny Elfman will appear as a guest on 89.9 KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic program tomorrow, November 30th, at 11: 30 a.m. Host Jason Bentley will interview Elfman about his 25 years of creative collaboration with legendary film director Tim Burton — a partnership that Warner Bros. Records has commemorated with the release of The Danny Elfman & Tim Burton 25th Anniversary Music Box.

The collection is a very special limited-edition, numbered box set of 1000 that collects expansions of the 13 original scores that Elfman has composed for Burton's iconic films: a newly produced library of 16 CDs each packaged with artwork by Burton, adding up to more than 19 hours of music. Additionally, the package contains a bonus DVD of a recent exclusive conversation between Elfman and Burton discussing every film and score in their remarkable quarter-century collaboration. The box is now available at www.elfmanburton.com.

Roadrunner Records’ Within Temptation is currently in the studio finalizing long awaited fifth studio album, The Unforgiving. This is the band's first concept album, and is based on a comic book by writer Steven O’Connell (BloodRayne & Dark 48). The release is set for March, 2011.

Within Temptation guitarist Robert Westerholt comments, "On this album, we've taken a totally different approach. Each song on "The Unforgiving" was written along Steven's narrative. The main characters of the comic are reflected in our songs. The concept pushed us and gave us the inspiration to come up with a new approach to our sound. It resulted in writing our best songs so far."

Renowned for their visual presentation, Within Temptation have asked Romano Molenaar (Witchblade, Darkness and X-men) to draw the characters and scenery for The Unforgiving.

Sharon den Adel, Within Temptation's stunning vocalist, continues, "We have been big comic fans since our childhood. With this album, we felt the time was there to take a new step in our creative development, to take it further and broaden our horizon. Because of the concept, the songs are more diverse than ever before. It was the late 80’s when we started to read comic books, and that sound has certainly has left a mark on The Unforgiving.

The band has also redesigned its website, www.within-temptation.com. The new site will give fans the chance to discover clues about The Unforgiving, as well as uncover unreleased images from the album. The new homepage is a community for the Within Temptation family, and has been engineered to be fully interactive. Fans can become official ‘reporters’ for their country, writing news stories about Within Temptation or about other lifestyle and entertainment topics. A very popular new section is WT TV, where the band will provide video updates, like the recent Fan Club Day footage, an event fans from around the world attended.

Within Temptation's symphonic rock, crowned by the crystalline voice of Sharon Den Adel, has brought the remarkable band a decade-long international career. The band has sold more than 3 million albums and DVDs world-wide, has attained Platinum status in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and Gold status in Spain, Finland, Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, Portugal, and Russia. Within Temptation has won a host of international awards, including a World Music Award, Golden God Award, and an MTV Europe Music Award. Numerous sold-out headline tours have seen Within Temptation through performances at major festivals like Loud Park (JP), Download (UK), Pinkpop (NL), Lowlands (NL), Rock Werchter (BE), Rock Am Ring (DE), Bilboa BBK Live (SP), Sweden Rock (SW), Ruisrock (FI), Aerodrome (AT), Gurtenfest (CH), Roskilde (DK) and many more

Originally founded in 1980 in the Netherlands, Roadrunner Records earned its place as one of the most prominent international independent record labels. Established primarily as a hard rock label, Roadrunner now boasts depth and variety in its artists. The label has recently experienced unprecedented success with multi-platinum artists Nickelback and Slipknot, near-platinum Theory of a Deadman, gold-certified Stone Sour and Killswitch Engage, as well as modern heavy hitters Korn, Dream Theater, Megadeth, Trivium and Opeth. Roadrunner's current roster also includes such diverse acts such as The Parlor Mob, plus up and comers like Young The Giant, Black Stone Cherry and Airbourne. Loud & Proud Records, a label joint-venture with Roadrunner, is home to established heritage rock acts including Rob Zombie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ratt, Meat Loaf (North America) and KISS (Europe and select territories).

Adam Marsland's Chaos Band Dec. 10 in Marina Del Rey

Former Cockeyed Ghost frontman and sometime Wrecking Crew collaborator Adam Marsland returns with the highly successful "Adam's 70's Show"--a collaboration between the Adam Marsland's Chaos Band (which boasts the incomparable Evie Sands on guitar, vocals, keyboards) and members of the LA music community. This show will be the End-of-Year Finale with musical guests choosing their "best of" to perform and will be held on Friday, December 10th at Brennan’s Pub in Marina Del Rey.

Los Angeles musician Adam Marsland brings together various people in the roots and pop communities of L.A. and invites them up with the Chaos Band to sing a '70s song of their choice. It took people a while to catch on the possibilities of this concept, but caught on they have...there will be more than 20 guests on tap for the show, with their song choices ranging from the better known classics to the more obscure deep album cuts. Together with returning songs from other shows, Adam's solo set, and Chaos-performed '70s covers, there will be upwards of three dozen '70s songs performed.

Marsland, when speaking of a past show said, "It always fascinates me the songs people pick out for this thing, stuff I would never think of. There's not a lot of country music chosen...the closest thing this time is a pretty fingerpicking singer-songwritery hit, where I get to further expand my newly developed fingerpicking skills (I learned for the first time at the Alex Chilton show). There's yet another Van Morrison tune, but no one's complaining about that. Shockingly, Supertramp, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones were requested for the very first time. But my favorite of all of the requests, for the second show in a row, came from Brian Whelan. Last time he picked out an obscure Fleetwood Mac tune, "I Know I'm Not Wrong." This time it was an absolute classic of Memphis soul. Every time we play the midsection of this song, everyone in the band smiles and starts to relax. I said to Evie, "every time we hit the bridge I remember why I started playing music" and she grinned, "yeah! Me too!"

When: Friday, Dec. 10 - 9pm

Where: Brennan's Pub, 4089 Lincoln Bld., Marina Del Rey

Arcadia Library to offer Ramona Myth talk

The Ramona Myth with Phil Brigandi

Date: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Location: Arcadia Public Library, 20 W. Duarte Rd., Arcadia

Phil Brigandi, historian and museum curator for the Ramona Pageant and former archivist at Orange County Archives, will discuss the role of the Ramona Myth in the shaping of Southern California and sort out the facts behind the fiction. Helen Hunt Jackson’s 1884 novel Ramona was intended to be a call for reform in our treatment of the Indians. Instead, local boosters seized on the popularity of the story and helped create one of the state’s first tourist booms, including tourist attractions, souvenirs, motion pictures, and the outdoor play of Ramona in Hemet.

Join the Friends of the Arcadia Public Library on Wednesday, January 19, at 10:30 a.m. to hear this fascinating story of a Southern California tradition. Reservations are not necessary; refreshments will be served.

Bruce Lee fans write song

What happens when two fans of Bruce Lee from different parts of the world first “meet” online? They decide to write a musical tribute to their idol. And which is what happened when Hong Kong-based music marketing executive Hans Ebert, Chairman of We-Enhance Inc and Yorkshire-born singer-songwriter Jon Harrison, based in the UK, have done with a song that started life as “Little Dragon."

With lyrics from Ebert, former Executive Director for Universal Music and EMI Music, whose credits include working with David Bowie, Gorillaz, Robbie Williams and others and turning Chinese songs into English hits for acts like Danish band, Michael Learns To Rock and UK-based artist Stewart Mac, Harrison turned these into music.

The result is a song recorded and produced to commemorate what would have been the late martial arts icon’s 70th birthday on November 27th of this year.

Says, Harrison, “Meeting Hans in person on a trip to Denmark, our discussion and finding of the mutual respect for all things Bruce Lee, sparked off the idea to write the song as a tribute to the man and legend and which we hope will resonate with other fans of the martial artist. The hope is that anybody who has suffered a significant loss in their lives can feel a degree of comfort in the lyrics and message of the song.”

Harrison thought to play the demo of the song to his musical collaborator and album co/writer Russ Ballard.

Ballard just teemed with ideas for it and, like the Beatles’ Hey Jude, has taken a sad song and made it better with there being Radio and Acoustic versions of the song.

As both lead singer and Guitarist in the band Argent, Russ Ballard wrote "God Gave Rock And Roll To You” and hits for the band Rainbow such as "Since You’ve Been Gone", Three Dog Night’s "Liar", Hot Chocolate’s "So You Win Again" and "Winning" for "Santana. With his additions, “Little Dragon” became the song it is today - "Dragonfly."

With a renewed interest in Bruce Lee and a number of books and film projects based around the life and times of the late action star, Ebert, Harrison and Ballard are looking at the song “Dragonfly” as being part of one of these projects and also the start of something new - a musical and conceptual project - inspired by Lee.

End o' Week Musings

No sleep for the rockin'....

Last Friday I went to an art salon at my friend Ngene Mwaura's home/studio. I got to preview some of his new work, which is really cool and I also met some very nice people.

Sunday I went to the Fox in Riverside to catch Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience. Wow! What a show. The band was awesome and the old home movies were fun. It was a very enjoyable evening. Now I'm all amped to see Jason when he comes through on tour with Black Country Communion, as he is one talented drummer and worth the price of admission no matter what band he's playing in. But Sunday was history and I was there...

Monday my brother Jason and I went to the Glass House in Pomona. We got in the venue in time to see Inferneon's set. The metal rockers were actually quite good, but their lead singer's rants against organized religion and other things were kinda funny. He also tried to get a response from the crowd by holding up a taxidermied ram's head. With his "property of satan" shirt, it was just too over the top to take seriously. I asked my brother which band member's dad is going to be mad when he sees his hunting trophy missing from the den. Truthfully, I would make a point to catch these guys on stage again if they open for anyone I plan to see, as musically they're pretty darn good.

Next up was The Casualities. This popular punk band is still hot. They got the audience moshing and played an energetic and explosive set. Well worth my time on the sidelines of the pit.

Finally it was time to see what we came for - Gwar. I love Gwar and have been a fan for years. When I worked on a music magazine I often covered the bands that no one else wanted, but with that I had the opportunity to discover some gems in the music scene. I had never heard of Gwar when I interviewed them and saw them for the first time, but after that amazing stage show I was hooked.

I have spent the bulk of my time with Gwar backstage, peeking out at the show and the crowd from the wings. A couple years ago I decided to be a true Gwar minion, I needed to see them from the "slave pit" in the audience. I came armed in my special white Pinky Star tank top, which has become my official Gwar shirt, and watched for a few minutes from the side before finding the right place in the pit. Then I went for it and got doused with "blood" and other fluids that spewed from the goingson on stage.

I really didn't think I got that coated, but when I got home, I realized that I had red over most of my face, hair and arms and all down the front of me. My shirt was dotted and splotched well enough to make any Gwar minion proud. It took two showers to get my normal skin tone back and it was worth every scrub! For my review and Jason's photos from this show, visit http://www.dabelly.com/ after Dec. 1.

Thursday was Thanksgiving so I did what millions of other Americans did... went shopping. I had to pick up a gift for a Toys For Tots drive next Wednesday at Maggie's in Santa Fe Springs and had some time, so it was a perfect fit. I only did the one store and came out with only a few other goodies, so I did well.

Later, my mother and I went to our friend Louise's brother's house for dinner. There were quite a few people and four rambuctious dogs, so it made for a lively evening.

I will be laying low this weekend, doing a few chores and visiting Carin and Tom. My next two weeks will be busy, as I have several dance gigs and lots of other little things to do. A bulk of my time will be spent here:

Group Show
McGinty's Gallery at the End of the World
2475 N. Lake Ave.
Altadena
626-794-8779

Artists' reception 6-10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, Free.
1st Friday Art Club 7 p.m.-1 a.m. Dec. 3, $5 - two bands and me dancing with my swords

Saturday Salon noon-6 p.m. Dec. 4, bring a potluck dish to share- barbecue and more.

Tie One On noon-6 p.m. Dec. 5, potluck dish welcomed - Sunday brunch and more.

The gallery has been a home for emerging and established artists of all media and genres and will be closing after this show. Be there for the history, stay for the culture and entertainment!

In rotation this week: Terrible Things, Taylor Swift and SETI-X.

Photos we got 'em: Me in my Gwar slave glory, a cute cow photo sent by my friend Bobby Boy and two pet pics off the Web.

Thought o' the Week: Be thankful. Keeping with the theme of the week, I know what being thankful is. I have gone through lots of things in my life and have learned to appreciate the simpliest stuff, such as having a warm and safe place to sleep and a good meal.

But being thankful should go further than that, it should include helping those less fortunate. I like it that there are many volunteer and donation opportunities during this time of the year. You can help dish out food, donate toys and other things. Still, this is only during the holiday season-- what about the rest of the year?

My friend Carin has been busy this year with a shoebox project. She has been filling small containers with a mix of useful items and tinkets and when she has a certain amount filled, the packages go to an organization which distributes them to needy children in her community.

At work, we receive a lot of books, DVDs and CDs. We use them for our stories and then donate the items to local libraries. I also take some of the books home for my mother to read and share with her friends at the senior center, which they return to me when they're done and then end up at a library.

There are many ways you can show your gratefullness by reaching out to your community with a donation of time, food, clothes and other items. Be thankful and pass it forward.

Keep on rockin'

Stand Up For Kids concert in LA Dec. 5

On Sunday, December 5, 2010, acclaimed singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham and nonprofit organization StandUp For Kids are teaming up with local area musicians, artists, and vendors to present LA’s 1st Annual ‘STAND UP FOR KIDS’ Benefit concert. Taking place at the James Gray Art Gallery in Santa Monica's Bergamot Station from NOON-4:00PM, this inaugural one-day festival will bring together elements of 'music + art + food' in an effort to raise funds & spread awareness on the currently growing issue of youth homelessness in the US.

Anticipated to be the largest event of the year for the Los Angeles chapter of StandUp For Kids - a national nonprofit volunteer outreach organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of at-risk, homeless, and street kids – the afternoon will feature LIVE performances by bands The Americans, Timmy Curran, and headliners Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses. Additional highlights of this year’s benefit to include: PORTRAITS of homeless youth by celebrated documentary photographer Tom Stone; a LIVE STREET ART demonstration courtesy of Viva La Art!; SILENT AUCTIONS; an extraordinary collection of food & beverages from LA’s FINEST VENDORS, and much more. This year’s fundraising event will also serve as a rare opportunity for the local homeless youth themselves to showcase their own unique music/art talents alongside other established musicians and artists.

For recent Oscar®-winner Ryan Bingham, being able to contribute to this event was not only an honor, but also one of particular importance to him. Spending the past several years on the road traveling as a musician, Bingham has all too often witnessed firsthand the harsh reality of the homeless condition in the US – an issue that’s even had an impact on some of his songwriting material – making this opportunity to give back all the more meaningful.

“I've always had this soft spot in my heart for the homeless community, particularly any children that are trying to survive living on the streets,” says Bingham. “When you’re continually traveling around the country, you really begin to see the condition that the country is in and the condition that people are in. You’re constantly encountering people from all different walks of life at all hours of the day - so you’re not always looking at the glossy side of everything - but also seeing the less fortunate side of our cities and communities and towns. I feel a lot of people still often overlook that these days, but it’s an important issue that definitely deserves more attention – and I really admire the work StandUp For Kids is doing to make that happen.”

All proceeds from the event will go directly to benefit the Los Angeles chapter of Stand Up For Kids. Admission to the event will be $20.00 at the door – OR – a donation of a sleeping bag, which will be given to the local homeless youth population. Children under the age of 14 will be admitted free of charge.

The James Gray Art Gallery of Bergamot Station is located at 2525 Michigan Ave in Santa Monica, CA. Doors open at 12:00pm, with the first musical act taking the stage at 12:30pm.

ABOUT STAND UP FOR KIDS
StandUp For Kids is a national non-profit organization that helps homeless and street kids 21 and under. Volunteers across the nation find, stabilize, & assist homeless and street kids in their efforts to improve their lives. The LA Chapter of StandUp For Kids currently conducts outreach in both Venice and Hollywood, with volunteers physically seeking out local youth living on the street (seeing between 150 to 200 kids per week) in order to provide them with food, clothes and adult support. In the Los Angeles area alone, statistics show that there is an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 homeless youth in the area, and roughly 80% of them are unsheltered each night. The funds raised from the Dec. 5th event will be dedicated to support the opening of a new Outreach Center in Venice. www.standupforkids.org

Curt Smith of Tears for Fears to release holiday song

Curt Smith, co-founder of seminal music group Tears for Fears, will release “This Is Christmas,” his first original holiday song, on November 29, 2010. Smith is releasing “This Is Christmas” via his KOOK Media label as a standalone single, which will be available in digital format from iTunes, Amazon MP3, and other online retailers. It will also be available as a signed, limited edition CD single, sold only at concerts and via Smith’s website.

“This Is Christmas” tells the story, Smith says, “of an adult visiting his parents at Christmas and lamenting how he’s always made to feel like a child when he returns home. It culminates in his realization and acceptance that they’re family after all, and nothing will (or even should) change that.”

Fittingly, backing vocalists on the track include Smith’s daughters Diva and Wilder, along with Charlton Pettus (Smith’s longtime friend and collaborator) and his children Georgica and Harry, Jason Joseph, Simon Steadman, and a chorus comprised of local school children.

“This Is Christmas” will be featured in the December 15 episode of the USA Network series “Psych.”

“I’d been attempting to write a holiday song for years,” Smith says, “but always found them a bit trite and forced. I was trying again when Psych’s James Roday approached me about licensing a song for the holiday episode of “Psych.” Once he sent me a clip of the scene he had in mind, it all made sense and the song came together naturally.”

Like Smith’s previous solo efforts, he’s releasing “This Is Christmas” under a Creative Commons license. The license Smith uses allows others to freely share, perform, and remix his work, so long as the uses are non-commercial, Smith is credited, and any derivative works carry the same license. Smith shares production credits on the song with Charlton Pettus.

Smith will play several Los Angeles-area solo gigs in 2011, along with planned Tears For Fears tours in South America and the U.S. West Coast.

Take a step back in time at the historic Castle Green, a blend of Moroccan and Victorian architecture, built in 1898 as part of the resort Hotel Green. Now privately owned apartments, and generally closed to public, the building will open its gates and welcome visitors, for the annual Holiday Tour on Sunday, December 5th.

Once converted to private residences in the 1920s, Castle Green attracted many designers, musicians, artists and collectors to live in the building. Those who find an interest in history, creative interior design, and cultural heritage, will see the original exterior and interior of this unique city landmark, the last remaining survivor of the hotel period in Pasadena.

While trained docents will be available, you may walk at your own pace through the original public rooms and over 20 individual apartments, all differently interpreted for the holidays. See the Grand Salon, the Moorish and Turkish Rooms, the Palm Room, Sunroom and Veranda, the open cage elevator, fireplaces, hand-carved woodwork, and marble staircases, the bridge and penthouse, with a 360 view overlooking Pasadena, as well as artist studios.

A 14-foot Scotch pine and holiday music will welcome visitors entering the Grand Salon. Exhibits and signage will describe particular rooms and features, some with movie stills from as far back as 1918. Exhibition ballroom dancing demonstrated by costumed Victorian-Era habitues. Guests will enjoy gingerbread and eggnog and other holiday treats.

The semi-annual tours of the Castle Green are organized by volunteer members of the nonprofit support arm, Friends of the Castle Green, whose mission is to provide and implement restoration to the building. All funds raised through the tours and merchandise sales are dedicated to the preservation of this landmark building.

Ill NIno releases new video

Latin metal masters ILL NIƑO and MetalUnderground.com have just debuted the brand new music video for ‘Against the Wall’. The video is directed by Scott Hansen, who has worked with the likes of A Day to Remember, Otep, Alesana, and more, and was shot in Virginia Beach, VA in October. The video is cut from the band’s most recent release, Dead New World, which hit stores on October 25th, 2010. Fans can purchase the single for ‘Against the Wall’ now on iTunes.

“The video was shot in the evening so there was a large amount of bugs. It was like Spider-fest,” jokes drummer Dave Chavarri. “Bugs aside, Scott made sure everything worked smoothly. He’s a total professional, and it was great to see him take control of the shoot. We haven’t had someone work with us like that for a couple of years.”

“We did something like a 20 hour shoot in the swamps,” adds vocalist Cristian Machado. “Scott is a really driven individual. He knew exactly what he wanted, where he wanted people in the video, the camera angles he wanted to end up with, everything. He and his crew were extremely professional.”

“The reason we’re performing in the woods where there are no material things, is because we wanted to represent things that aren’t of the material world,” continues Machado. “The reason the couple is indoors during the video and going through their relationship battle is because they are being pressured by things in the material world. To me, the female character went into the water because she wanted to get away from all of the material things affecting her and their relationship. No matter how material we all are in this world, we all die alone.”

ILL NIƑO is expected to announce a brand new January tour very soon! This will be the first time the band is touring in the states in two years! Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming tour.

We Were The States release new album

We Were The States barely survives Nashville floods to complete polished sophomore album.

Band strikes “Gold” on lead single from “Rasa” album out now on Austin’s Chicken Ranch label.

“Gold” is the first single from the Rasa album by We Were The States

[MP3]: http://www.fanaticpromotion.com/projects/wewerethestates/mp3/wewerethestates-gold.mp3

We Were The States had nearly completed the recording of its new album Rasa when the Nashville floods came. With two feet of water in the basement of Coat of Arms studio, the band went from euphoric to discouraged, thinking the record they had worked on for two years would be indefinitely derailed.

Regrouping at Nashville’s Club Roar studio, the Murfreesboro-based five-piece quickly prepped for very long hours on a very limited budget, but ultimately persevered. The resulting album captures all of the energy and precise abandon of the band’s much-loved live show while also reflecting the realistic frustrations of their situation. It’s a tense record, but still a joy to listen to.

Working with producers Jesse Newport and Daniel Feese, We Were The States vocalist Justin Webb was encouraged to approach the songs he wrote for Rasa like he had never heard them before. Webb explains that Feese gave him the freedom to try all of the ideas he had in his head.

“A specific example from the record would be ‘Daft Since ‘77’, a song I had the words for, but didn’t know how I wanted to hit on the chorus.” In its completed form, the chorus explodes just how it’s meant to, expressing Webb’s restlessness perfectly amid just the right amount of rock n’ roll sheen.

For as easy as that chorus comes, it’s surprising to find out that when Webb first met guitarist Jay Stoyanov and formed We Were The States, he never even planned on becoming the band’s singer. “I only wanted to play guitar,” Webb says. “I eventually dropped guitar all together tho -- when we play live, I only sing.”

The band is the better for it ultimately, with Webb allowed the freedom to perform as a true front man. On Rasa, his captivating vocals are unhampered above the mature, layered, and just plain big sound that the band has achieved on the album -- a distinctive step forward from its debut record. “I know it took me a few years, but with this album I really felt comfortable being myself,” Webb says.

We Were The States is back to feeling euphoric and is ready to play live again. Wired Magazine previously said of the band’s show that “These guys sounded so good that they cut through the din of South By Southwest from 100 yards away...” These guys are looking forward to continuing to leave that impression with the release of Rasa on Austin’s Chicken Ranch Records.

LInkin Park Radio launches

Modern alternative band, Linkin Park is known for their musical experimentation and technological innovation. Their latest release, A Thousand Suns, has been described as a “journey that explores the conflict between technology and humanity.” In this spirit, the band has teamed up with A.P.E. Radio, for the November 22nd launch of “Linkin Park Radio.”

Curated by the band themselves, “Linkin Park Radio” will broadcast a plethora of content, including previously unreleased tracks, demos and covers that can’t be heard anywhere else. The band will let fans in on the recording process behind A Thousand Suns, as well as discuss the multi-media live experience of their upcoming North American tour. Linkin Park will also program selected playlists of their favorite songs, interviews with other performers, and much more.

“We’re very excited to launch the Linkin Park station on A.P.E. Radio,” said Mike Shinoda, co-lead vocalist of Linkin Park. “This is our first radio station where you can tune in and hear some of our favorite music – songs that we grew up on, and new music we think is exciting. We’re also going to premiere rare and exclusive LP music, and take calls from some of our favorite fans… and you get to hear us pretend to be DJs. It’s going to be a slice of the world through the eyes and ears of Linkin Park.”

The launch of “Linkin Park Radio” arrives just after the announcement of the band’s upcoming North American tour, in support of A Thousand Suns, which debuted on top of the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart upon its September release. Come January, US fans will get to see firsthand the band’s show that wowed critics and fans alike on their recent European trek. Says Kerrang, "It's a bold, brilliant, and rather beautiful experience." Joining Linkin Park will be up-and-coming acts Pendulum and Does It Offend You, Yeah? (January 20th - February 11th), and UK legends The Prodigy (February 15th – 26th). For on-sale info and tour updates, go to: www.linkinpark.com.

“Linkin Park Radio” will be distributed across Clear Channel Radio's "iheartradio" network, which includes hundreds of local radio websites; the popular iheartradio mobile app, which has been downloaded by nearly 11 million people; widgets; and www.linkinpark.com. Fans are encouraged to participate by emailing their suggestions to linkinpark@aperadio.com. The station strengthens an already diverse A.P.E. Radio roster including “Slash FM,” “Maroon 5 Radio,” "Radio Weezer," "Christina Aguilera Radio," and "Eagles Radio Hosted by Joe Walsh."

About Linkin Park:
Linkin Park was just voted ‘Best Live Act’ at the 2010 MTV European Music Awards. As a special “thank you” to concert goers, fans that purchase tickets to the upcoming Linkin Park tour will be able to download a live recording of the show they attended, by texting a code from their mobile phones that will be displayed at the venue. Additionally, one dollar for each ticket purchased will go to Music For Relief, a charity founded by Linkin Park to provide relief to victims of natural disasters and to bring awareness to solutions to the global warming challenge.
