Flush with rolling piano, wistful strings, and brittle to booming percussion, The Spring Standards have unleashed their new double-disc record, yellow//gold, today on Parachute Shooter Records. The release consists of two emotionally-charged EPs that tell intertwining stories of growing up and leaving home to embark on a new adventure. yellow evokes a sense of nostalgia for the trio's shared childhoods—they started playing folk music together as teenagers in the rural landscapes of the Pennsylvania/Delaware border— while gold is a declaration of young life in a big city, bursting with energy.
Opening with a repetitive crackle reminiscent of a train's wheels in motion or a record that needs to be flipped, “Rusty Wheels” is a song of homecoming and the exciting challenges that come when following one’s own path. “Here We Go” bursts forward over thrumming guitars, a cautious yet hopeful song about the discovery of a pure love. Tapping into the beauty and magic of youth, yellow opens with “Only Skin,” a track that perfectly encompasses the inevitable sadness that comes with change and greatening distance.
Like a group of journeying troubadours, The Spring Standards tantalize the imagination with truthful, relatable stories and create a musical atmosphere that covers a vast spectrum of emotion. The band will kick off a national US tour this week in celebration of their album release, joining up with Rhett Miller on a massive June tour. The tour will be a celebration to support the release of the new album yellow//gold as well as the band’s collaboration with Rhett Miller on his forthcoming album. Be sure to catch the band’s energized live show in a city near you!
