The Jazz Bakery is very pleased to bring legendary jazz pianist and songwriter Dave Frishberg to Los Angeles on June 30. The four time Grammy nominee is the writer of such jazz standards as “My Attorney Bernie,” and “Peel Me a Grape” plus the Schoolhouse Rock hit, “I’m Just a Bill,” and many more. The show will take place at 8:00pm at the Kirk Douglas Theater, the jewel of the Culver City Theater District, located at 9820 Washington Blvd, Culver City CA 90232. Called “a consummate craftsman of pop-jazz songs … equaled only by Stephen Sondheim” by the New York Times, Dave Frishberg has enjoyed a career remarkable for both its quality and its diversity. Long known as one of the outstanding pianists in jazz, Frishberg has also established himself as an internationally recognized composer and lyricist as well as a solo performer with a loyal following.

Early in his career, during the 1960s, he was a busy pianist in New York City, playing regularly with major jazz artists including Ben Webster, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Carmen McRae, and Gene Krupa. In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a studio musician and stayed active in jazz circles. He has recorded with a diverse array of artists, including Manhattan Transfer, Jimmy Rushing, Bud Freeman, Bill Berry's L.A. Band, Susannah McCorkle, Kenny Davern, and Rebecca Kilgore.

Frishberg has become best known for writing and recording his own songs and performing them in prominent jazz and cabaret venues. His song credits include classics “I’m Hip,” "Do You Miss New York," "Slappin' the Cakes on Me," “Van Lingle Mungo,” and “You Are There.” Four Frishberg albums have earned Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Vocal.

In addition to “I'm Just A Bill,” he also wrote "Walkin' on Wall Street," a song that describes how the stock market works, and "$7.50 Once a Week," a song about saving and balancing a budget for ABC's Schoolhouse Rock series.

Other artists who have recorded his songs include Susannah McCorkle, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, Diana Krall, Blossom Dearie, Carol Sloane, John Pizzarelli, Bob Dorough, Tony Bennett, Jamie Cullum, and Mel Torme.

His last solo album was Retromania: Dave Frishberg at The Jazz Bakery. Ruth Price, The Jazz Bakery’s founder and artistic director calls Frishberg a “One of a kind singer, songwriter, and pianist... the essence of hip.”

His recordings are available on the Concord, Blue Note, Arbors and Fantasy labels. After a long stay in Los Angeles, Frishberg now makes his home in Portland, Oregon.
