The Tumbling Tumbleweeds in Altadena March 17

What a year 2011 was! New festivals, new opportunities, a new Tumbleweed and of course, a new WMA AWARD!

We also recently received the Top 100 cowboy/western albums played by the western music DJs who report to The Western Way magazine in 2011 chart and Blaze Across the West is in the top 10 at #6!

We have so much to celebrate and be thankful for and now, 2012 promises to be just as exciting!

We already have bookings throughout the entire year including the Big Bear Cowboy Gathering in August and our first appearance at Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO this coming October!

Some of the appearances we have coming up are:

Coffee Gallery in Altadena, CA on March 17th (Flyer Below)

Mavericks Coffee in Visalia, CA on March 24th

Boulevard Music in Culver City, CA in April

WMAAZC Western Music Festival in Tucson, AZ in April

Calico Ghost Town in May

Wieghorst Western Music Jubilee in El Cajon, CA in June

..And much more!

We also want to be sure and share some news with all of you. Our Guitarist R.J. Mills has moved to the East Coast to pursue a solo career. We are happy for R.J. but we will really miss him. He has been our brother since the beginning of The Tumbling Tumbleweeds and we have many wonderful memories that we will always share with him. It is indeed bittersweet as we head into the busiest and most exciting time of our career so far but we know R.J. is following his dreams and we support him completely and wish him the very best.

Meanwhile, back here at Tumbleweed Ranch the show must go on and we are very excited about our new addition to the group, Guitarist, David Elsenbroich. He's a dynamo!

David started playing guitar at the age of nine in his hometown of Redwood City, California. Though he started with classical guitar, David studied jazz in high school and then went on to receive two degrees in jazz guitar performance from the University of Southern California. It was there that he studied under world-renowned bebop and Western Swing guitarist Bruce Forman of Cow Bop, who first introduced David to the music of Bob Wills.

David was hand selected by Tumbleweed Rob after a phone call to Bruce Forman who recommended David and it was only after an interview and of course, a jam session with R.J. that R.J. himself said, "Yup, he's the right man for the job!" It could only be with R.J.'s blessing that we Tumbleweeds would feel ultimately confident in our choice for R.J.'s replacement so we are indeed proud now to present David as our new member!

Tumbleweed Rob says of David, "Man, he's got skills and loads of style! He's a great guy too and we are really looking forward to turning him loose on our fans. They're gonna love him!"

s we said, 2012 promises to be an exciting year so stay tuned and be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for the latest updates and photos of our shows, travels and adventures!

Happy trails!

Your pals,

James Reams & the Barnstormers in Altadena March 21

James Reams & The Barnstormers, a bluegrass band that was nominated by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2003 as Emerging Artist of the Year, will be appearing for one night only, March 21, at 8pm at The Coffee Gallery Backstage at 2029 N. Lake in Altadena, CA (www.coffeegallery.com/showsat ). This is a rare opportunity to see this long-established iconic bluegrass band in an intimate setting. Legendary bluegrass fiddler, Blaine Sprouse will be a featured musician.

Having recently relocated to the Phoenix area, James Reams & the Barnstormers are seeking to bring their brand of bluegrass to selected venues in the southwest. The band will be celebrating 20 years of playing Bluegrass music in 2013 with plans for a coast-to-coast celebration. Their latest CD, released 2011, is entitled One Foot in the Honky Tonk.

Raised in eastern Kentucky but now living in Phoenix, AZ, James Reams puts a layer of desert grit over a solid base of traditional bluegrass music. His band treads the terrain where bluegrass, old-time, classic country, honky tonk and rockabilly meet in the night to swap stories. These are the sounds of the hills and hollers combined with the sounds of factories and railroad yards and honky tonks.

The Coffee Gallery Backstage is located at 2029 N. Lake in Altadena, CA. The Backstage is a listening room with a fine sound system, good lights, comfortable seating and a killer atmosphere. Shows start at 8 pm. For directions checkout the Backstage website at www.coffeegallery.com.

Demand for the Zac Brown Band live experience is at an all-time high as the multiplatinum, GRAMMY-winning outfit throws down every night with expert musicianship, hearty Southern rock, and an unparalleled fan experience that's sold out arenas and amphitheaters from coast to coast on their 2011 tour.

Opening for Zac Brown Band on select dates will be "New Orleans' brightest new star in a generation (NPR) Trombone Shorty, and "devil may care, southern pop-funk" (Georgia Music Magazine) Southern Ground recording artist Nic Cowan.

Before becoming MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, Season 3, Quest Crew’s energy and charisma captured the attention of audiences with their numerous crew and individual performances on American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance?. Members of Quest Crew have been featured in LMFAO’s videos and television performances. Sidney Samson started DJ-ing in 1995 when he was just 14. A remixer and producer Samson has been keeping dance floors packed ever since. Noted in Billboard’s May 2011 issue as “One To Watch”, Dutch born & bred Eva Simons is ready to take the electro-dance world by storm with a brand new album this year. Having previously collaborated with LMFAO, will.i.am & Chris Brown, Eva gained much acclaim recently with the massive hit she co-wrote and featured with DJ Afrojack called “Take Over Control”. The single topped iTunes dance charts globally, selling almost a million in the U.S alone so far, and becoming an anthem that has crossed over into mainstream radio worldwide. Born in Bradford to a Jamaican father and Uruguayan mother, Natalia creates razor-edged pop. Her debut album, Perfectionist, debuted #1 on the US Billboard Heatseekers Chart, and she has toured with Katy Perry, Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, Robyn, and Kelis. She is also featured on LMFAO's hit track "Champagne Showers.”

LMFAO’s sophomore album Sorry For Party Rocking (Party Rock/will.i.am/ Cherrytree/Interscope) was recently certified gold and quickly approaching platinum. The album has produced two #1 singles, “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy And I Know It,” while the third single “Sorry For Party Rocking” is climbing the Top 40 radio charts. The video for “Sorry For Party Rocking” premiered on E! last week and already has over 9 million views on VEVO. The video features LMFAO and the party rock crew in full on house party mode.

LMFAO has performed on numerous television shows including Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, The American Music Awards and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. The duo recently appeared in national commercials for Budweiser including a Bud Light commercial that aired right before the Bridgestone Super Bowl Halftime show with LMFAO in route to join Madonna on stage but instead ending up at Dale’s Halftime bar.

LMFAO’s ”Party Rock Anthem” has surpassed 10 million units in total sales worldwide! “Party Rock Anthem” was the #2 top selling song of 2011 on iTunes in the U.S. behind Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” and it was the #1 selling song on iTunes in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden. The video has seen over 360 million views on VEVO and was featured by KIA in their award winning KIA Hamster advertising campaign. LMFAO’s music has been licensed by movie and television shows, including 20th Century Fox’s holiday hit “Chipwrecked,” Fox’s TV hit “Glee” and the top charting game “Just Dance 3.”

Live Oak Music Festival announces headliners

Mark your calendars for the best Live Oak Music Festival yet! Featuring the Grammy Award-winning Indigo Girls and more than 15 other main stage acts that represent genres ranging from folk, blues, and bluegrass to zydeco, Latin, jazz and even Chinese classical music, the 24th annual Live Oak Music Festival will once again showcase some of the finest musicians in the world. The event takes place Fathers’ Day weekend, Friday-Sunday, June 15-17 in the hills near Santa Barbara.

Headliners are as follows:

· Sunday, 8:45 p.m. - Grammy-winning folk-rock duo Indigo Girls are Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, who released their fourteenth studio album, Beauty Queen Sister, in October 2011. Alternating richly textured storytelling with moody ruminations on modern-world worries, the album reveals a fierce longing for a more idyllic existence while still celebrating the extraordinary in every day living.

· Friday, 9 p.m. - The Rebirth Brass Band combines New Orleans brass band tradition with their modern signature brand of heavy funk, jazz, soul, and hip hop. The band’s most recent album, Rebirth of New Orleans, won a Grammy award earlier this year for Best Regional Roots Music Album.

· Saturday, 8:45 p.m. Carolyn Wonderland reaches into the depths of the Texas blues tradition with the wit of a poet, and is considered a musical force equipped with the soulful vocals of Janis and the guitar slinging skills of Stevie Ray. The Los Angeles Times gushes, “Carolyn Wonderland is the real deal! She's an amazing guitar player. She whistled a solo. She even played the trumpet! And damn, can she sing."

Other musicians not to miss include:

· Friday, 7 p.m. - John Doe is a singer, songwriter, actor, poet, guitarist, and bass-player whose music spans the rock, country and folk genres. He was the founder of X, one of the original L.A. punk bands and he continues to tour with them as well as with country-folk-punk band The Knitters.

· Saturday, 6:45 p.m. - James McMurtry, the Grammy-nominated and Americana Indie Award-winner, is the son of acclaimed author Larry McMurtry. Said The Washington Post, “Much attention is paid to James McMurtry's lyrics, and rightfully so: He creates a novel's worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets propelled by electric guitar.”

· Other notable artists lined up include contemporary Latin-jazz and salsa pianist Oscar Hernández, the vintage-tinged rocking country soul of Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers, the dance music of Quinn DeVeaux and the Blue Beat Review, and the Chinese music ensemble, Melody of China.

For a complete line up of acts please visit: http://www.liveoakfest.org/pp/lineup.shtml . A great way to kick off summer, the Live Oak Music Festival is a three-day concert and camping event held every year on Fathers’ Day weekend. Nestled under the oak trees of the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, Live Oak features music and activities for the entire family, including children’s programs and activities, an artwalk, arts & crafts booths, and a tent where Live Oak merchandise can be purchased.

Tickets for the festival are now available and 100% of festival proceeds benefit KCBX Public Radio, which serves San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. 2012 Live Oak Music Festival tickets, the up-to-date entertainment line-up, and complete festival information are available at www.liveoakfest.org or by calling 805-781-3030.

Ripple Music sponsors Total Biker FM band contest

Ripple Music, home of the "Best retro-rock and metal on the planet" is thrilled to announce it's sponsorship of TBFM Factor 2012 - the biggest "on-air" battle of the bands ever!

TBFM Factor 2012 is presented by internet radio station Total Biker FM, home of hard-driving rock n' roll. This is the second time the station has presented this competition. With so much talent out there TBFM wanted to help promote the top bands and hopefully give them the boost up the ladder that they deserve by setting up a fan voted competition.

In 2010, the station was not fully prepared for what turned out to be an amazing competition with over 4 million hits during the final week which crashed the servers TWICE! The competition was such a great success, they decided to bring it back in 2012, bigger, better and more prepared!

The competition is set over 15 weekly knockout weeks. Music from 10 bands each week will get airplay on the Sunday Show on Total Biker FM and then fans get to vote for one week on which band deserves a place in the final. After 15 weeks, a final place is given to a wildcard, which will be the highest voted for runner up from all the knockout stages.

On week 16 the epic final takes place. All 16 bands get featured on air on a special 4 hour show and then all week during all regular shows while fans vote again for the best band of the competition. The winning band will receive some great prizes including the top prize of an exclusive one album record deal with American label Ripple Music.

This is one lucky band's opportunity to join with Ripple Music and become a label-mate of such roaring artists as Mos Generator, Trucker Diablo, Stone Axe, Iron Claw, Grifter, Poobah, JPT Scare Band and Fen.

More prizes are on offer for the finalists ranging from musical equipment to website memberships to free record mastering. Registration closes on 31st March, 2012 and the competition gets under way on June 10th, 2012 with the grand final in September.

More information on the bands taking part, how to register, prizes and sponsors can be found at www.tbfmfactor.com

150 bands take part over 16 weeks… only one winner! And a Ripple record contract is the Grand Prize!

Important dates are as follows:Registration closes 31st March 2012
Qualifying Bands Line-Up announced 13th May 2012

'Hugo' and 'The Artist" exhibit now open in Newhall

The William S. Hart Museum has unveiled a temporary exhibit featuring objects in the Natural History Museum (NHM) and Hart Museum collections relevant to two Academy Award© Best Picture nominees: Hugo and The Artist. Both films focus on the making of silent movies and early film pioneers. General admission to the Hart Museum is free.

This special exhibit will feature several cases in the Hart Mansion containing costumes, film props, equipment and historical artifacts.

The main character in Hugo was based on early filmmaker Georges Méliès, played by Ben Kingsley. The Hart Museum has in its collection a 4-page letter from Méliès in which he bitterly writes of his plight as an ignored silent filmmaker and the burning of his work. Fans of Hugo will find that the movie’s climactic scene pulls directly from this correspondence.

The Artist is loosely based on swashbuckling star Douglas Fairbanks (played by Jean Dujardin), a donor to the Natural History Museum, who coincidentally also appears in Hugo.

Among the items to be displayed at the William S. Hart Museum:

· The Georges Méliès letter, with transcription.

· William S. Hart’s shirt and cuffs from his last film, Tumbleweeds, which appears in Hugo.

· Props from The Artist.

· A jeweled dagger from The Thief of Bagdad, as seen in Hugo.

· Buster Keaton’s pork pie hat, and Harold Lloyd’s glasses, both seen in Hugo.

· A Lumière Cinématographe, one of only three in the United States. The Lumière brothers, referenced in Hugo, produced the Cinématographe, the first commercially successful camera and projector.

· Early pre-cinema devices such as magic lanterns and a Praxinoscope, as seen in Hugo.

The motion picture property house History For Hire (www.historyforhire.com ) will also loan the William S. Hart Museum key props used in The Artist, including the projector from the fire scene.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was one of the first Museums to collect film memorabilia. In the 1930s, the Museum (then known as the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science and Art) began contacting filmmakers, actors and publicists for the purposes of collecting everything needed to make and market a film. Hollywood greats, from Charlie Chaplin to Walt Disney, have contributed to the collections. Recent additions include Betty Bronson’s costume from the original Peter Pan (1924) and a Grace Kelly costume from The Swan. NHM’s film frame archive spans hundreds of movies made from 1890 to 1930.

William S. Hart was one of the most popular leading men of the silent film era, unique for his powerful presence and serious approach to early Westerns. His acting skills were honed by years of experience on the New York stage and theaters all over the country, and in his movies, the actor insisted on authentic depictions of the Old West and its people, from their clothes to their lifestyles and complex personalities. He frequently played a stalwart, tough-as-nails cowboy, with a soft spot for his favorite horse — a brown and white pinto named Fritz. He is the only silent film star that ever turned his home into a Museum.

The Hart Museum, located in Newhall, California, is part of the Natural History Family of Museums.

About the Hart Park and Museum

Silent film star William S. Hart purchased a ranch house and surrounding property in Newhall, north of Los Angeles, in 1921. He built a 22-room mansion and filled it with Western art, Native American artifacts, and early Hollywood memorabilia. Hart bequeathed the 230-acre estate to Los Angeles County for the enjoyment of the public at no charge. Tours and programs such as silent movie screenings take place frequently at the Hart Museum. Among the Hart Park’s permanent residents is an assortment of animals, including a small herd of bison, a gift from the Walt Disney Studios in 1962. Today, the property is jointly administered by two Los Angeles County agencies. The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation is responsible for the grounds, animals, and buildings, while the care and interpretation of the Hart home and its artifacts is administered by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

The Hart Park and Museum is located at 24151 Newhall Avenue, Newhall, CA, 91321. The Park is open 7 days a week until 5:00 pm. The Museum is open Wednesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and weekends from 11 am to 3:30 pm, with tours every half hour. Admission is free. For more information on the Museum, visit www.hartmuseum.org or call (661) 254-4584. For more information on the Park visit parks.lacounty.gov or call (661) 259-0855.

About the Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County serves nearly one million families and visitors annually, and is a national leader in research, exhibitions and education. The Museum was the first dedicated museum building in Los Angeles, opening its doors in 1913. It has amassed one of the world’s most extensive and valuable collections of natural and cultural history — with more than 35 million objects, some as old as 4.5 billion years. The Natural History Family of Museums includes the NHM (Exposition Park), the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits (Hancock Park/Mid-Wilshire), and the William S. Hart Park and Museum (Newhall, California). For more information, visit the Museum’s website at www.nhm.org or call (213) 763-DINO.

The Wooden Sky release video and new album

Toronto folk outfit The Wooden Sky are pleased to unveil "Grace On A Hill Pt. 1," the first of a five-part series of live performance videos shot in at the Grace On A Hill church in Toronto, directed by Scott Cudmore. The video comes in celebration of the release of their new LP, Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun, which is available today via Black Box Recordings. The band is currently on an expansive North American tour. A full list of dates is below.

"After 'Documentary in Pieces' I knew that I didn't want to do the whole stripped-down performance type of thing again, and talking to [singer] Gavin [Gardiner], the band didn't really want to do that sort of thing again either," explains director Cudmore. "Not that we didn't feel good about that project, but I felt like after shooting in canoes in the mountains and gondolas and sunflower fields that we couldn't really take that approach any further. Plus, everybody and their dog is doing those kind of 'Take Away Show' performances now and though they're valuable, they're not quite as special as they once were."

"So we decided to go the other direction and try to make something that was very cinematic," continues Cudmore. "We wanted to make a movie - kind of a short film, with a narrative running through it. The idea was the make something episodic that would develop as it progressed and in that way the narrative context would give a different dimension to the songs - exactly like in a movie where the drama gives a different context to the song used on the soundtrack, only in this project the songs are the centerpiece and are performed live while the narrative is the backdrop instead of the other way around."

Since 2003, the Toronto collective has been pushing the limits of folk and country. After touring on the success of their sophomore album If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone, the band was ready to try new things. Gardiner explains, "after two years out on the road, it seems everyone had their eyes and ears open searching for new textures to play with."

Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun began to take shape when the band gathered last January at a cottage along the banks of Georgian Bay. Conflicting schedules and studio availability delayed recording but gave the band time to continue writing. "It didn't take long for the record to increase in scope. What began as a simple collection of 9 songs quickly ballooned into an 18-song opus; 13 songs ended up making the record. It did come dangerously close to being a double album."

Much of album was recorded at Montreal's Hotel 2 Tango with Howard Bilerman and Radwan Ghazi Moumneh. Subsequent sessions were recorded in various spots in Ontario and Quebec: studios (Lincoln County Social Club), apartments, lofts, churches and a farm in rural Quebec. "Everywhere seemed to offer new possibilities, and limitations. At the time it was a lot of work lugging all that gear around but each space seemed to bring its own energy to the song. There were times in the summer we'd race back to the farm after a show to record all night. It was exciting and that kind creative explosion seemed to carry us through."

Sean Bones releases 7-inch

Brooklyn-based Sean Bones is pleased to release his Here Now 7", available physically today, with a limited run of records with handmade sleeve art and packaging. To celebrate the release our friends at Nylon have the record's B-side "Hit Me Up" available for free download.

Fresh off a tour with Mates of State and with SXSW on the horizon, Bones has even more cooking in the kitchen. His new LP Buzzards Boy will be available May 8. A full tracklisting is below.

Buzzards Boy is one of an evolving artist setting out to test new waters only to find himself weathering a stylistic and emotional sea change. As with most second records, there's much to prove, but in the case of Buzzards Boy, Sean Bones transcends a varied stylistic past to reveal himself as an intriguing songwriter capable of truth and sonic spells.

On Buzzards Boy, Sean and his bandmates hooked up with a producer for the first time. Shane Stoneback was sought out for his uncanny recording methods (oil cans, toys amps) and his enthusiasm for the demos he was absorbing between his other name-brand projects (Cults, Sleigh Bells, Vampire Weekend). The sessions were brief and at some point during the week Bones resolved to taking on the rest of the project alone. Traveling between rehearsal spaces, bedrooms and eventually to the West Coast, he built an awesome second record from the foundation laid through this partnership.

The island he's trawling this time is darker and more lush. Tracks are swathed in reverby surf guitars and loose percussion. Its easy to imagine hearing this album out doors, at night. A full listen reveals a wide range of influences digested into something wholly Bones' own. "Tell Me Again" is a folky harmonium piece played over what sounds like the Miami Sound Machine. "Four Dub" explores open space and urgency. The sublime "Black Gold" starts with a scruffy hip hop beat until giving way to another one of those swoony boy-girl ballads that he's good at.

At the heart of Buzzards Boy is a romantic young man, worried about the world and checking himself for imagined damage. Somewhere in the storm came a renewed sense of purpose. Fittingly, the exuberant lead single "Here Now" was written last. Backed by Fool's Gold's Garrett Ray and Lewis Pesacov, the song brims with energy as an ecstatic Bones proclaims, "I'm here now, hold it down!." Whether he's here to remind himself or the rest of us doesn't matter - the track is his most confident and inspiring to date.

04. Wondering
05. Bermuda Nothin'
06. Tell Me Again

Spoken word and music at the Getty in March

This March, the Getty presents an eclectic line-up of spoken word and musical performances, with works spanning hundreds of years. From contemporary short stories to the haunting melodies of Gothic song, there are plenty of events to add an extra “spring” to your step.

First, Selected Shorts returns for its annual weekend of live performance at the Getty on March 3 and 4. The hit public radio series offers an excellent lineup of actors from stage and screen to read funny, passionate, and mysterious classic and modern tales about “objects of desire.” Performers include Leonard Nimoy, Jane Kaczmarek (“Malcolm in the Middle”), Tate Donovan (“Damages”), Robert Sean Leonard (“House M.D.”), and many more. Historical, religious, magical, humorous, beloved, or bewitched—every object tells a story.

"We have a really juicy bunch of stories lined up," says Isaiah Sheffer, host of Selected Shorts. "Each year, we aim to deliver a fresh and surprising program of spellbinding short fiction performed by an all-star cast. The Getty has been an excellent venue for our annual weekend of readings, and we look forward to the enthusiastic Getty audience each spring.”

End o' week musings

Wow! The last two weeks are becoming a blur as I look ahead to committments and adventures.

I have been a busy journalist. Among my many recent interviews have been illustrator David Russell, who worked on the film, "Red Tails," singer/songwriter Cheryl Wheeler and lead singer Luke Pritchard of The Kooks.

Last Friday I had a day off. I went with my special guy to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. We went to the FrontRunner restaurant for lunch - and a little horse betting - where Sous Chef (and my friend, plus bass player for Dramara and Halford) Mike Davis works. He came out for a minute to chat, but it was sooo busy that he couldn't hang out and sip cocktails with us. Darn! 'Cause the bartender makes a really good Bloody Mary.

Later in the afternoon, my guy and I went down to the seats by the track for a better look at the horses. They are sooo beautiful. I got a kick out of the horse-drawn carriage that helps move people around the track, as its main rider was Lexi, a sweet Jack Russell terrier, who seemed to know she was special. My guy and I both won a little bit, but not enough to brag. OK, I won $2.43, but I was only betting $2.40 per race. And for those of you doing math, that's less than $20 for a day's entertainment.

Saturday I went to Lighten Up SGV's Supermarket Tour to learn how to shop for better nutrition and better health. You can read some of the host's tips at www.insidesocal/dieting And learn more about the FREE (that means no excuses my little couch potatoes) Lighten Up SGV programs and resources, visit http://www.lightenupsgv.com/

For dinner I met Vernor ( www.twitter.com/vernorsticket ) for dinner at BJ's. We celebrated his birthday with a meal - I had the Kung Pao Chicken, which was terrific - ending with a chocolate chip Pizookie. The Pizookie arrived with a lit candle, which Vernor quickly blew out. I asked him, "Did you wish that you could blow out the candle? Or perhaps that the fire department wouldn't show up?" He laughed... good thing, I guess.

My day finished by going with my friend Roc to the Canyon Club to see Which One's Pink, a Pink Floyd tribute band. They were very good and I wouldn't mind seeing them again some time. It was well worth my staying out too late!

Sunday Louise and I went to Carin and Tom's to visit and do a few odd jobs. I delivered some pillows I had made for Carin's outdoor "Casbah" patio couch and began work on a weatherproof cover for it. Louise finished some work she was doing in Carin's rock garden. Then we relaxed in the Flamingo Lounge area, then the Casbah (had to try out the pillows) and finally in the living room of the house when it got chilly.

Tuesday was fun. I had a coupon for a free bowl of soup at Chik-fil-a, so I stopped in before I went to band rehearsal. On my way in the door, I met a very tall cow dressed up like a pirate and accompanied by a princess. Hmmmm.... I put in my order, sat down and was enjoying my soup when the cow sat down across from me. I said hello and he... I mean she nodded. I asked the cow if she was tired of all the kids grabbing her and she nodded again, very deeply, lol! I also told the cow that she reminded me of the cow on the Chik-fil-a calendar for February, who was steering a boat. I took the cow's photo and got a hug. Now that doesn't happen every day!

I got to do a short solo again in my Polynesian/Tahitian dance class last night. I'm the newest dancer - I've been taking the class for just about a year, while everyone else has been with it for more than five years - so I'm usually in the back row. It's an honor to get a minute to shine.

Tomorrow I will be going to Lighten Up SGV's Women's Wellness Seminar, which includes health screenings, talks and lunch. I'll report on that at The Skinny blog later next week. The I have two hard days- the memorial for Carin's father Sunday and Byron's dad's funeral Monday.

Now for brighter things- get some culture by reading my stories on "Antony and Cleopatra" opening at A Noise Within, "The Treatment" opeing at Boston Court, the art exhibit "Richared Bunkall" A Portrait" now open at Pasadena Museum of California Art and British rockers The Kooks coming to Pomona by visiting http://www.sgvn.com/ And while you're there, take a minute to read Vernor's Oscar picks.

In rotation this week: Orange Sky, Terrible Things, Tracy Newman & the Reinforcements, Elton John & Leon Russell, Black Water Rising and Symphony X.

Photos we got 'em: The Chik-fil-a cow, Lexi in her carriage at Santa Anita Park and my usual cute pet pics.

Thought o' the week: Ease the bitter with some sweet. Years ago I went to another friend's father's funeral and was handed some coins. My friend is part-Chinese and she explained that their tradition is to give change to the young people at the funeral so they can buy some candy, with the idea that the sweetness of the treat will take away some of the bitterness of the pain of losing someone dear.

I can't say the candy really made me feel that much better, but the thought certainly did. What a nice tradition. It reminded me how, when I was a child, my mother and I would stop at the bakery on the way home after I had to get a shot at the doctor's office. Maybe all life should be like this... maybe it is.... If we only take the time to look up from our sorrow to see the beauty and good in life-- a tiny flower, a happy hummingbird or an ice cream cone. Pain and sadness teach you to appreciation these things.

I have a few hard days ahead of me, but they will also be filled with happy memories of lives well-lived. Both men who have passed were good to the others around them and left their own special legacy, they are deserving of more than the simple honors we can give. I may cry, but I will also smile and laugh-- a little bitter and a little sweet.

Keep on rockin'

Mickie

House of Blues Hollywood launches all-ages concert series

In a development that is guaranteed to make Southern California's fiercely loyal and ever-growing Blues community jump for joy, the House of Blues/Sunset is presenting a new, all-ages, Blues Concert Series in its second floor Crossroads Restaurant and Concert Hall.

Guitar slingers Big Shot Reub and the Reloaders (Friday, February 24) and Dave Widow And the Lineup (Saturday, February 25) kick off this weekend's lineup, followed by blues harpist Papa J & Friends (Saturday, March 3) and guitar ace Jay Gordon & Blues Venom (Saturday, March 10). No cover charge for any of these shows. 8:30-11:30 p.m. 8430 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood. Info: (323) 848-5100 or www.houseofblues.com

(Fri. Feb. 24) - Big Shot Reub and The Reloaders' ROUNDHOUSE BLUES, a San Diego Music Awards 2011 "Best Blues Album" nominee, has received very positive media response since its release. "I plopped this CD into the player and hoped for the best, and low and behold I was pleasantly surprised just how good of an album "Roundhouse Blues" turned out to be," writes BLUES UNDERGROUND. "Talk about some classy blues...this is the stuff you look long and hard for. If you like virtuoso guitar this is one album you need to get!," opines CASHBOX magazine. "On "Roadhouse Blues," Vigil moves flawlessly and tastefully across the frets to produce a very high quality product for any discerning ear to enjoy," asserts BLUESROCKERS. http://www.reverbnation.com/bigshotreubandthereloaders.

(Sat. Feb. 25) - With his unique style of finger picking and distinct vocals, guitarist Dave Widow (whose new album LONG GONE drops this Spring) brings a fresh approach to the Blues, while also combining elements of R&B, Funk, Soul and Rock. His musical style is influenced by his relationship with many great blues and R&B talents, including Buddy Miles, Bonnie Bramlett, Bill Champlain, Lonnie Mack, and his mentor and collaborator (the late) Roger "Jellyroll" Troy, bassist and vocalist for The Mike Bloomfield Band. "Dave Widow and the Lineup do an amazing job channeling the authenticity of Blues, covering influential legends like Taj Mahal and T-Bone Walker, without compromising their own style," wrote respected trade publication MUSIC CONNECTION in a recent live show review. "Dave Widow and the Lineup deserve a spot on the '1,000 Bands To See Before You Die' List," the magazine concludes. www.davewidow.com.

(Sat. March 3) - Real Blues Festival of Orange County founder/harpist-vocalist Papa J & Friends come to the House of Blues/Sunset for a special night of high-energy Blues, performing songs from their just-release album, THE BIG SHOW. "A good solid blues album...there are actually a few of my modern blues favorites on here and Papa J has his own take on them. Very cool!," affirms BMANS BLUES REPORT. Casey Reagan of the AMERICAN BLUES NEWS writes, "coming up on sixty years of age, Papa J still bounces on stage every night with the energy of a guy half his age. A showman by nature and musician by instinct Papa J's stage presence and energy is undeniably huge to anyone who's seen him perform. From his contagious smile to his gut wrenching blues he puts a thousand percent into making every performance mean something special to every person watching and it sure works on me." www.papajandfriends.com.

(Sat. March 10) - Take the primal wail of American Blues and amplify them beyond the point with no limitations. Jay Gordon continues to shake planet earth with his onslaught of Electric Voodoo Blues. When you listen to BLUES VENOM - NO CURE you will see how Jay has moved the blues forward to the 21st century, infusing the music with the fire and power of rock while carving out his own place in the music world. BVNC features songs like, Dockery's Plantation (for Robert Johnson), World Blues, Slow Burn/Biker Mama, Red Hot Tempered Woman and more, even a bonus track in honor of the late great Phillip Walker. "Getting bit by Jay Gordon's BLUES VENOM - NO CURE is similar to Peter Parker getting bit by a radioactive spider. There is no cure, but that's a good thing," states the world's #1 authority on such matters, BLUES REVUE. "As solid as a blues album can be, and I consider one of the best I have heard this year," the review concludes. www.jaygordonandthepenetrators.com.

Grow LA Victory Garden classes to be offered in spring

As Los Angeles County continues its love affair with growing backyard gardens and supporting the garden-to-table living, UC Cooperative Extension in Los Angeles County is pleased to announce the fifth season of the “Grow LA Victory Garden Initiative” gardening classes this spring. Taught by UC-certified Master Gardeners, the locally celebrated series will be held at local gardens throughout the county, starting in March or April.

The initiative helps new gardeners start their own gardens quickly and easily in a container, in the backyard or at a community garden, bringing together local families and neighbors to share their experiences, skills and produce. Participants will be able to turn their new gardening interest into successful gardens, “from the ground up,” and generate positive changes by helping to lower grocery bills and enhance opportunities to eat healthy, nutritious foods.

Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener volunteers will organize and lead low-cost gardening classes and teach the basics of gardening. Eighteen gardening classes are scheduled throughout Los Angeles County. Each class will meet four times, on weekends, to discuss gardening techniques and engage in hands-on activities. Upon successful completion of series, participants will become UC-certified Victory Gardeners.

“Learning with our Master Gardeners is a wonderful way to play in the garden and grow your own really fresh, harvested vegetables,” said Yvonne Savio, Common Ground Garden program manager.

Partners in the initiative include local schools, community gardens and organizations, such as the Altadena Community Garden, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the Watts Towers Art Center.

For more information on the “Grow LA Victory Garden Initiative,” contact Yvonne Savio at (323) 260-3407, ydsavio@ucdavis.edu.

Blackburner to tour with Ministry

Cleopatra Records electrorock/dubsteb artist Blackburner has just been tapped to support Ministry on its highly-anticipated summer national tour as just announced on Ministry’s social network
http://www.facebook.com/notes/ministry/ministry-announces-defibrilatour-north-america-support-blackburner/356382094383071

Blackburner is also showcasing at SXSW next month.

Blackburner is a bold new force in electronic music, combining the heavily twisted and seriously aggressive beats of dubstep and glitch with the melodic hooks of rock, industrial, and electronica. It is masterminded by producer/musician Skyla Talon, a Michigan-born Los Angeles transplant who cut his teeth with the modern metal band Killingbird and later joined Scum Of The Earth with former Rob Zombie axeman Riggs. Inspired by the revolutionary new sounds in electronic music generated by the likes of fellow metal-head-turned-DJ Skrillex, Talon began the Blackburner project remixing tracks and releasing original compositions through the Cleopatra imprint Hypnotic Records.

The project immediately met with enormous success, as compilations featuring Blackburner climbed the iTunes Electronic charts, racking up over 50,000 individual downloads. Now joined by former Chicago-based metal musician K Kyle (who also performs in hard rock band ModelSaint with Talon), Blackburner is preparing to release a full-length record in April 2012. FEEL THE BURN will feature guest appearances by electronic pioneer Edgar Froese of Tangerine Dream as well as John Wesley of Porcupine Tree.

Catch Blackburner at SXSW on Thursday, March 15 at Speakeasy Kaberet, 412 Congress Avenue at 11:20pm with dubstep hotshots Mord Fustang, Son of Kick, Lenno, Sond Remedy, SIRsir, and Caro Limon. They will perform at the legendary Bar Sinister in Hollywood (1652 N. Cherokee) on March 24. Ministry tour dates include:

Pasadena Singers concert March 3

The Pasadena Singers, directed by Dr. Timothy Howard, will present “Choral Favorites from Two Continents,” a free concert that will include the world premiere of three pieces on Sat., March 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 E. Colorado Blvd. (corner of Madison) in the Playhouse District of downtown Pasadena.

The concert is part of the church’s “Friends of Music at PPC” series. Admission is free; a freewill offering will be taken. The Pasadena Singers, with 27 members, is one of eight choirs and ensembles at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.

A focal point of the concert will be the first performances of three folk songs arrangements by English composer Philip Lawson: “Star of the County Down,” “When the Kye Comes Home,” and “Aiken Drum.” Members of The Pasadena Singers commissioned two of the three new arrangements; a PPC member commissioned the third selection.

Lawson sang with The King’s Singers and has been the group’s principal arranger for nearly two decades. In 2009 the group's album "Simple Gifts," on which Lawson arranged 10 out of 15 tracks, won the Grammy award for "Best Classical Crossover Album."

Other works on the March 3 program will be selections from Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Waltzes,” “Three Shakespeare Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Stomp Your Foot” and “The Promise of Living” by Aaron Copland, and an arrangement of “Cindy” by Mack Wilberg.

Timothy Howard is Director of Music and Organist at Pasadena Presbyterian Church. In addition, he is Lecturer in Music at California State University, Northridge and head of the school’s organ program.

This spring he will be one of three organists participating in “Pipe Organs Inspire,” a series of free-admission recitals on March 14 at First United Methodist Church, Pasadena; March 31 at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Pasadena; and April 14 at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.

The “Friends of Music at PPC” series is a major outreach component of Pasadena Presbyterian Church’s ministry to the community. This season it is presenting nine free-admission concerts and the church’s weekly “Music at Noon” concert series of free-admission recitals from 12:10-12:40 p.m. every Wednesday.

The next concert on the “Friends of Music at PPC” series will be the 15th annual Good Friday concert on April 6 at 7:30 p.m. The PPC Kirk Choir, community singers, soloists and the Friends of Music Orchestra will present a program that will include John Rutter’s “Requiem” and other selections for Holy Week.

Pyramids in LA March 5

On Monday, March 5, PYYRAMIDS will be playing at The Echo (10pm set time) with NO, Future Ghost, and Ivan & Alyosha. PYYRAMIDS is Tim Nordwind (bass in OK Go) and singer Drea Smith, but in a live setting they play with a full band. Tim and Drea first bonded over dark British pop from the early '80s like The Smiths and Joy Division, and stranger more modern fare like Micachu and the Shapes, to give you an idea of their sound.

They released their debut EP, Human Beings, this past Halloween and just released the music video to their second single, "Don't Go," this week. Feedback so far has been fantastic and we're such huge fans of the whole EP (it's tough to determine our favorite song as it's always changing!).
