LOS ANGELES- Esotouric, the offbeat bus adventure company that unearths
hidden lore of Los Angeles while celebrating the city's history and culture,
is pleased to announce the debut of "You Can't Eat The Sunshine," a weekly
podcast celebrating all the people, places and things that make Los Angeles
the most beguiling city in the world.
Hosted by proprietors Richard Schave and Kim Cooper, the podcast tracks down
fascinating Southern California characters for wide-ranging interviews that
reveal the myths, contradictions, inspirations and passions of the place
through the stories of the people who were there.
Each episode is framed by Richard and Kim's musings on recent L.A. history
and preservation news, discussion of timely posts on their 1947project time
travel blogs, and announcements of upcoming free and paid tours on the
Esotouric bus and at historic properties.
Episode One: "Hot Rods & Huell Howser" (January 21) features legendary
automotive engineer Gale Banks, builder of some of the world's fastest
vehicles, talking about his membership in 1950s hot rod car clubs, early
L.A. custom car shows, the influence of aerospace industry on auto
customization and high performance, and why girls dig the sound of a loud
engine. L.A. historian, writer and educator Mike The Poet shares touching
memories of growing up watching Huell Howser, and how for many years Huell's
TV show "California's Gold" was the only thing Mike and his father could
agree on. Co-host Kim Cooper highlights a recent blog post on the colorful
downtown L.A. businessman Maurice Zuckerman, who in the 1910s cornered the
West Coast potato market and earned his lifelong nickname, The Potato King.
Plus: an incredibly catchy theme song by The Ukulady, and the first in her
series of lively adaptations of bizarre vintage magazine advertisements.
