Veronneau toasts its 50th anniverasary with new album

50 years ago "bossa nova" was a term barely known beyond Brazil, until in 1963 "Jazz Samba," the milestone recording by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, took the world by storm. In popularizing the seductive, syncopated "bossa" rhythm, it became the only jazz album in history to reach #1 on the Billboard pop chart in March 1963. It ranks as one of the biggest selling jazz albums of all time and brought Brazilian composers such as Tom Jobim to worldwide fame.

Washington DC-area world jazz quartet Veronneau (http://www.VeronneauMusic.com) celebrate the 50th anniversary with their Jazz Samba Project CD release. Veronneau's CD features classic samba and bossa nova, plus new bossa nova arrangements of contemporary songs.

Veronneau's CD was launched with a concert at All Souls Unitarian Church, Washington, D.C., where the original Jazz Samba album was. The colorful history of the original recording has been recounted in published articles written by Veronneau guitarist Ken Avis.

Jazz Samba Project charted its first week out, rose to the top ten in the national jazz charts and regionally in 25 North American cities and earned high praise from critics. Latin Jazz Network said, "You can feel the high level of creative interpretation," Critical Jazz gave the album five stars and hailed Lynn Veronneau as "the sexy black dress of jazz vocals." Veronneau's 2011 album Joie de Vivre - Joy of Living met with similar success.
Veronneau, this month, received 3 Wammie Awards from the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) - Best Jazz Group, Best Jazz Vocal, and Best Jazz Recording for Jazz Samba Project. The album is to be launched this Spring in the UK. Getz/Byrd's Jazz Samba also invaded the Top 20 in the UK in 1963.

Quebecoise vocalist Lynn Veronneau is a compelling interpreter of song in the manner of Stacey Kent, Louciana Souza and Eva Cassidy. Singing in four languages, her seemingly effortless technique was developed through classical voice studies in France. She performed with notorious all-female group Les Horribles Cernettes – the band which had the first-ever photograph on the web - before relocating to the States.

Formed three years ago and fronted by Lynn and her husband, British guitarist and vocalist Ken Avis, Veronneau has logged countless performances in Europe and North America. They've been interviewed on BBC, Radio Canada and many American radio stations.

Veronneau received 6 Wammie nominations in 2012 for their debut Joie de Vivre - Joy of Living CD, and 7 nominations this year. For more information, visit: http://www.VeronneauMusic.com

Michael Feinstein's American Songbook returns to PBS April 5

Stephen Sondheim, Liza Minnelli, Angela Lansbury, Christine Ebersole and other great stars of American music and musical theatre share the spotlight with the country’s most passionate music preservationist as MICHAEL FEINSTEIN’S AMERICAN SONGBOOK returns to PBS for a new star-studded, three-part season Friday, April 5, 2013, 9:00 p.m. ET.

Season Three finds Feinstein exploring the enduring popularity of show tunes, the pas de deux between music and choreography on stage and the big screen, and the indelible impact that radio – in its star-making heyday – had on the American musical canon.

While crisscrossing the country on a seemingly endless stream of concert dates, Feinstein conducts candid interviews with revered composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Follies) and the multiple Award-winning Broadway and television legend Angela Lansbury.  He sings with Tony Award-winning actress Christine Ebersole, reminisces with Liza Minnelli about the great dance stars Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, hosts superstar violinist Joshua Bell on his public radio show, and visits with some of the country’s most well-versed and colorful collectors of musical recordings and music ephemera.

The acclaimed MICHAEL FEINSTEIN’S AMERICAN SONGBOOK airs as part of PBS ARTS, one of broadcast television’s only programming blocks dedicated to the best in performing arts, on Fridays, April 5, 2013, 9:00-11:00 p.m. ET and April 12, 2013, 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET on PBS.

Retox signs with Epitaph

Epitaph Records is proud to announce the signing of one of today's most provocative and passionate bands: RETOX. Combining the jagged edges of stripped down/back-to-basics rock n' roll with bombastic attitude and art-rock intelligentsia, using the prism of the past to look toward the potential brilliance of the future, RETOX's YPLL arrives via Epitaph Records on May 7th, 2013. A brand new video, "Congratulations You Are Good Enough," is already live on Vice's Music Channel, showcasing the band’s kinetic, challenging energy.

Check out the new video here:
 http://noisey.vice.com/blog/retox---congratulations-you-are-good-enough-official-video

RETOX deliver a mission statement in 12 blistering tracks, the vast majority of them clocking in at two minutes or less. It's the type of rallying battle cry that inspires lingering and dormant primal urges and too-long-suppressed societal dissatisfaction in those who encounter its punk rock lineage and postmodern crash-and-ban.

Tracks like "You Lost Me At 'It Wasn't My Fault,'" "Greasy Palms" and "Nose to Tail" are all filled with immediacy, urgency and restless energy, no matter which tempos RETOX happen to be pummeling in the songs. "Congratulations You Are Good Enough" features guest guitar work guitarist Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whose fretwork jumps aboard the careening song. The track builds to a punk rock crescendo with crystal clear production that amplifies every crackling nuance of the band's delivery.

Subcultural iconoclast and artistic visionary Justin Pearson is known in critical circles, amongst contemporaries across a wide variety of genres and to fans of incisively incendiary artistic expression around the world as one of the guiding lights of the groundbreaking outfit THE LOCUST. He resurfaced on record alongside gifted guitarist Michael Crain, dynamic bassist Thor Dickey and powerhouse drummer Brian Evans.

YPLL takes the ugly powder-keg promises of the band's impressive debut and ratchets up the proceedings exponentially, quickly given all who fall under its spell ample evidence as to why friends and contemporaries who have played with Public Image Ltd., Nine Inch Nails, Killing Joke, Man Is The Bastard, Swing Kids,  and The VSS count themselves among the bands supporters and comrades. Otis "O" Barthoulameu (Fluf, Olivelawn) coined a phrase for what RETOX have summoned forth: "New Confrontation."

Pearson himself offered this explanation for Retox's new album's creative combustibility: "YPLL is something that four very odd humans placed together as a reflection of the art due to the worlds we live in." Incredibly well thought-out, highly educated, impossibly practical, Retox's YPLL uses the power of the riff and the passion of the scream to conjure diatribes about the human condition. As Pearson notes, producer Chris Rakestraw, who has worked with heavy metal luminaries and postmodern hardcore heroes alike, "Brought out aspects that the band has previously not honed in on, resulting in music for the future yet to come."

"While writing YPLL, we were particularly focused on riffs and simpler song structures," explains Crain. "Not so much on the extras, such as effects and layers of guitar, but more on an actual song's flow. The guitar lines, kick drum, and snare are definitely driving the ideas home while the bass guitar is the glue holding it all together. And the vocals are telling each song's story. We really just wanted to keep it simple and make everything fun to listen to. Chris definitely honed in on this."

PRE-ORDERS are now live for RETOX's YPLL, which will arrive in-stores and online on May 7th. Please go to: www.kingsroadmerch.com/epitaphrecords
