Tooth & Nail Tour launches May 1
The TOOTH & NAIL TOUR PRESENTED BY WHITE CASTLE is set to launch May 1 in Seattle and will criss-cross America before wrapping June 11 in Salt Lake City. The six-week trek--now in its third year--will feature Tooth & Nail recording artists MxPx, Hawk Nelson (not on all dates), The Classic Crime, Sullivan and The Fold on all dates, with Project 86 and Run Kid Run appearing on select shows.
Headliners MxPx recently rejoined Tooth & Nail Records, reestablishing a strong and familiar relationship that dates back to the beginning of the legendary Washington state trio's illustrious recording and touring career. Vans Warped Tour veterans, a staple at MTV2 and Fuse, with an international draw in countries as diverse as Australia and Japan, MxPx has been making records since they were in high school, starting with the seminal Pokinatcha. They have survived the ebbs and flows of the trends, sticking to their guns with their integrity and credibility intact, earning critical love from Alternative Press and praise from their peers. MxPx has now sold over 2.4 million records worldwide and will release to release their brand new album Secret Weapon in July. The new album reunites MxPx with Aaron Sprinkle, who produced the band's first album and went on to work with artists such as Pedro The Lion, Anberlin, Eisley and Emery.
Hawk Nelson is touring in support of their 2006 sophomore studio release Smile, It's The End Of The World. This project takes a quantum leap forward musically and lyrically from their debut release. North Carolina rock band Sullivan is preparing for the June 5 release of their second full-length Cover Your Eyes, produced by James Paul Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Paramore). Sullivan has come leaps and bounds from when singer/guitarist Brooks Paschal and bass player Zach Harward were writing songs with a drum machine a few years ago, adding drummer Phil Chamberlain (brother of Underoath vocalist Spencer) and guitarist Tyson Shipman to fully realize their sound and their shared dream of truly connecting with fans emotionally.
The TOOTH & NAIL TOUR continues to help break new ground for the Tooth & Nail label artists. Last year's tour featured Anberlin, Emery, The Classic Crime and Jonezetta, with The Fold and Far-Less appearing on select dates. Dublin Death Patrol back on the scene
Friday The 13th Dublin Death Patrol Re-Emerges From The Bay Area Thrash Scene!!!
The collaboration of long time friends and members of the Dublin Death Patrol (DDP) Testament Vocalist Chuck Billy originally teamed up with fellow Dublin California ragers; Willy Lange (Rampage, Laaz Rockit), Steve ZETRO Souza (Original Testament Vocalist/Exodus Vocalist) and three of the Billy Brother s as well as some other local Dublin boys.
The seeds were planted in or about 1980 with a bay area thrash band called Rampage featuring neighborhood kids from Dublin California, Chuck Billy with his brother Andy Billy, Greg Bustamante, Ernie Boehm and Willie Lange. The guys were about 18 years old and had all known each other since they were about 5. The guys grew up listening to a variety of bands from Zepplin, Kiss, Aerosmith to The Dead Kennedys and The Sex Pistols; and were influenced by the sounds of the late 70’s and early 80’s.
This time period was a great time for a bunch of kids who lived out in the burbs, and the boys from Dublin with their long hair and their naïve attitudes would go to the clubs to rage and see The Dead Kennedy’s and whatever punk shows that trails through the Bay area.

Willy states, “We were out to make a name for ourselves and word spread quick that we were not to be fucked with!"

One day Chuck Billy and Greg Bustamante and Willy Lange were kicking back at their apartment when they received a call from Lars and he was begging that the DDP didn’t fuck them up because they didn’t mean any disrespect and didn’t have insurance.
Willy told Lars, “We never had any intention of fuckin with them and that we were totally cool. That was the kind of reputation we had.”
Willy Lange remembers, “Backing up a bit when we first started Rampage it was Andy Billy, Ernie Greg and Myself but we needed a singer; we already had 2 full Marshall stacks a bass rig and drum set but no singer. Chuck Billy looked like a good fit--- a big, tall monster with an attitude, so we asked him to try. Chuck was playing guitar at the time but said “what the fuck let me try”. The first song we wrote was ‘Circumcise Me’ it fuckin killed and off we went from one backyard or barn to the other playing our newfound trade on the unsuspecting suburbanites.”
After about a year or so a band called Diamond wanted Willy to play bass for them and they were fairly popular in the Bay Area scene at about the same time Chuck was having doubts about his ability to be a front man. One night Chuck, Greg and Willy were sitting on the side of Chucks house smoking weed and talking about their band Rampage, when Chuck said he was giving it up that he thought he was a “Clown” we tried to convince him to stay they had just got into the battle of the band a couple of months earlier and we thought he kicked ass but it seemed his mind was made up.
So Willy left Rampage to play with Diamond and Lange muses, “I guess Chuck wasn’t a “Clown” after all. Zet was our main Roadie slash biggest fan plus he had a car he new all the bands in the area and it seemed all the bands new him. He was also best friends with Phil Demmel and his brother was friends with Troy Lucketta. Little did we all know that from such a small little town 30 minutes east of San Francisco would supply such a powerful mix of Metal Legends. Chuck Billy lead singer Testament. Steve “Zetro” Souza lead singer Legacy and Exodus. Phil Demmel lead guitar Violence and Machine Head. Troy Lucketta drums Tesla. And the bass player from Laaz Rockit whatever his name is”.
In the summer of 2005 Laaz Rockit got the offer to play a reunion gig in Holland at the Dynamo open air the festival all of us had played before. When Lange heard Testament were on the bill it was a no brainier so Laaz Rockit dusted off the old gear and headed over the pond. Lange was blown away how many young kids were clamoring for “Old school Metal” Lang states, “I was talking with Chuck over there about the possibility of getting our old crew together and play some killer tunes we had wrote but never recorded some 20 years ago. The new version of the Dublin Death Patrol was born then and there. From that point on to this day this project has been a labor of love, fun, and brotherhood.
Willy Lang states it clearly, “I think what we have done with this project is a true reflection of our influences from our first time together. The covers that we picked are the bands that we emulated at the time. The originals have stood the test of time and with Vincent Wojno our honorary brothers help at the controls we are all very proud of what we have accomplished. Like Chuck Billy says all the time; “ if we wanted to put out the heaviest album of all time we could have. But putting out a “Machine Head” type album just wouldn’t reflect our true beginnings.”
The last thing to do now is go out and crush audiences all over the world and show what a tiny little town with an attitude profound has to offer.
Vocalist Chuck Billy recalls, “I remember moving to Dublin California in 1965 driving through a little town that didn’t have much to it one high school a few supermarkets. Everyone knew everybody in town through school or after school sports. I started playing guitar in 8th grade and stuck with it through high school. Back in late 70’s I remember going to barn parties watching the local musicians get together to play some of our favorite covers. I wanted to play so bad and be in the music scene we started our first band called “Rampage”.
The guys were young and competitive to start with wanted to play in town like the other guys were. Chuck remembers, “We thought we would be the rough ones with attitude almost like we were punk rock or at least what we thought punk rock stood for. We used to drive to Oakland to Willy’s truck yard to practice in the back of a 45 foot trailer. It was always a party booze and weed mostly. We played some local house and barn parties and began our own little metal cult.” “We left our mark where ever we went leaving the word Rampage or just the page as we called it all over town. All the local musicians knew who we were. Steve Sousa was my younger brother Andy’s best friend and was always at the Rampage rehearsals. I was there as support of the band when one day they said why don’t you give it a shot so I did and I was the new singer. After discovering the bay area notorius venues, Ruthies and Keystone Berkeley scene we brought our attitude along as well.”
“We all went different directions with our music. Willy joined Diamond which was an up coming band and then moved on to join Lazz Rockit and then almost Metallica. I went to college and took some music theory, vocal, and guitar classes. Andy keep playing with local musicians. Greg went to work for Willy. Ernie started working in the family business. I also took private lessons at night. I started a few bands with friend until I got the call from Steve Souza who had just left his first band called Legacy to join Exodus. Zetro suggested I call Alex Skolnick and ask for an audition. That day has changed my life forever.
After the success these individuals had on our own over the past two decades in their various bands; the sound of getting together with all the old gang to revisit some old songs we wrote sounded cool. They invited anyone from Dublin who wanted to get involved with the project to hop on for the ride; all are welcome. The word spread fast.
STEVEN “Zetro” SOUZA recalls how the idea to resurface the ultimate DDP ‘trash gang’ of their youth, came to him, “Originally it was Willies and Chuck Billy’s idea. The first I heard of getting this project together was at a Raider pre-season game in 2005. Willie was telling me his idea of DDP and getting the old Rampage guys together. But this version would have Chuck and I singing on every song and include different musicians that grew up in Dublin to play on this record. Well, I was right in”
They had their first meeting at Hooters in Dublin to discuss what the plan was.
After 6 months of writing, arranging and restructuring songs new and old . The guys went into record the DDP album through strains and pains with Vinnie Wojno (a tour side), Steve Zetro Souza boldly claims, “this is what we have to give to the metal world, a kick ass straight up aggressive and in your fucking face album of music by guys just from Dublin California. Willy Lange remembers, “Backing up a bit when we first started Rampage it was Andy Billy, Ernie Greg and Myself but we needed a singer; we already had 2 full Marshall stacks a bass rig and drum set but no singer. Chuck Billy looked like a good fit--- a big, tall monster with an attitude, so we asked him to try. Chuck was playing guitar at the time but said “what the fuck let me try”. The first song we wrote was ‘Circumcise Me’ it fuckin killed and off we went from one backyard or barn to the other playing our newfound trade on the unsuspecting suburbanites.”
After about a year or so a band called Diamond wanted Willy to play bass for them and they were fairly popular in the Bay Area scene at about the same time Chuck was having doubts about his ability to be a front man. One night Chuck, Greg and Willy were sitting on the side of Chucks house smoking weed and talking about their band Rampage, when Chuck said he was giving it up that he thought he was a “Clown” we tried to convince him to stay they had just got into the battle of the band a couple of months earlier and we thought he kicked ass but it seemed his mind was made up.
So Willy left Rampage to play with Diamond and Lange muses, “I guess Chuck wasn’t a “Clown” after all. Zet was our main Roadie slash biggest fan plus he had a car he new all the bands in the area and it seemed all the bands new him. He was also best friends with Phil Demmel and his brother was friends with Troy Lucketta. Little did we all know that from such a small little town 30 minutes east of San Francisco would supply such a powerful mix of Metal Legends. Chuck Billy lead singer Testament. Steve “Zetro” Souza lead singer Legacy and Exodus. Phil Demmel lead guitar Violence and Machine Head. Troy Lucketta drums Tesla. And the bass player from Laaz Rockit whatever his name is”.
In the summer of 2005 Laaz Rockit got the offer to play a reunion gig in Holland at the Dynamo open air the festival all of us had played before. When Lange heard Testament were on the bill it was a no brainier so Laaz Rockit dusted off the old gear and headed over the pond. Lange was blown away how many young kids were clamoring for “Old school Metal” Lang states, “I was talking with Chuck over there about the possibility of getting our old crew together and play some killer tunes we had wrote but never recorded some 20 years ago. The new version of the Dublin Death Patrol was born then and there. From that point on to this day this project has been a labor of love, fun, and brotherhood.
Willy Lang states it clearly, “I think what we have done with this project is a true reflection of our influences from our first time together. The covers that we picked are the bands that we emulated at the time. The originals have stood the test of time and with Vincent Wojno our honorary brothers help at the controls we are all very proud of what we have accomplished. Like Chuck Billy says all the time; “ if we wanted to put out the heaviest album of all time we could have. But putting out a “Machine Head” type album just wouldn’t reflect our true beginnings.”
The last thing to do now is go out and crush audiences all over the world and show what a tiny little town with an attitude profound has to offer.
Vocalist Chuck Billy recalls, “I remember moving to Dublin California in 1965 driving through a little town that didn’t have much to it one high school a few supermarkets. Everyone knew everybody in town through school or after school sports. I started playing guitar in 8th grade and stuck with it through high school. Back in late 70’s I remember going to barn parties watching the local musicians get together to play some of our favorite covers. I wanted to play so bad and be in the music scene we started our first band called “Rampage”.
The guys were young and competitive to start with wanted to play in town like the other guys were. Chuck remembers, “We thought we would be the rough ones with attitude almost like we were punk rock or at least what we thought punk rock stood for. We used to drive to Oakland to Willy’s truck yard to practice in the back of a 45 foot trailer. It was always a party booze and weed mostly. We played some local house and barn parties and began our own little metal cult.” “We left our mark where ever we went leaving the word Rampage or just the page as we called it all over town. All the local musicians knew who we were. Steve Sousa was my younger brother Andy’s best friend and was always at the Rampage rehearsals. I was there as support of the band when one day they said why don’t you give it a shot so I did and I was the new singer. After discovering the bay area notorius venues, Ruthies and Keystone Berkeley scene we brought our attitude along as well.”
“We all went different directions with our music. Willy joined Diamond which was an up coming band and then moved on to join Lazz Rockit and then almost Metallica. I went to college and took some music theory, vocal, and guitar classes. Andy keep playing with local musicians. Greg went to work for Willy. Ernie started working in the family business. I also took private lessons at night. I started a few bands with friend until I got the call from Steve Souza who had just left his first band called Legacy to join Exodus. Zetro suggested I call Alex Skolnick and ask for an audition. That day has changed my life forever.
After the success these individuals had on our own over the past two decades in their various bands; the sound of getting together with all the old gang to revisit some old songs we wrote sounded cool. They invited anyone from Dublin who wanted to get involved with the project to hop on for the ride; all are welcome. The word spread fast.
STEVEN “Zetro” SOUZA recalls how the idea to resurface the ultimate DDP ‘trash gang’ of their youth, came to him, “Originally it was Willies and Chuck Billy’s idea. The first I heard of getting this project together was at a Raider pre-season game in 2005. Willie was telling me his idea of DDP and getting the old Rampage guys together. But this version would have Chuck and I singing on every song and include different musicians that grew up in Dublin to play on this record. Well, I was right in”
They had their first meeting at Hooters in Dublin to discuss what the plan was.
After 6 months of writing, arranging and restructuring songs new and old . The guys went into record the DDP album through strains and pains with Vinnie Wojno (a tour side), Steve Zetro Souza boldly claims, “this is what we have to give to the metal world, a kick ass straight up aggressive and in your fucking face album of music by guys just from Dublin California. Represented by members of Testament, Legacy, Exodus, Vio-Lence, Laaz Rockit, Tesla, Heist and a group of headbanging Dubliners that deserved status.”

Baroness signs to Relapse Records
Relapse Records is proud to announce the signing of Savannah, GA’s BARONESS.
BARONESS (Allen Blickle – drums, Summer Welch – bass, John Baizley - guitar, vocals, and Brian Blickle – guitar) recently finished writing their first proper full-length. The band will enter the Jam Room in Columbia, SC in April with Phillip Cope (of KYLESA) at the production helm to begin recording their Relapse debut.
Baizley elaborates on this new record and future plans: “We have completed writing and formulating the vast bulk of material that will comprise our first full length. We have been actively writing and performing this material since the beginning of last summer and have toured Europe, playing a good cross section of the new album. This will be our first recording with our second guitar player (Brian Blickle), who has been in the band for nearly two years. The album is expected to be 10 tracks, and will have no formal title. Upon its release, we plan on touring the U.S. and Europe extensively in support of it.”
BARONESS has previously released two EPs (First and Second respectively) on local Savannah indie, Hyperrealist Records and will see the release of their “third” EP by way of a split with THE UNPERSONS titled A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk via At A Loss Recordings imminently.

Sage Francis tour set
Sage Francis – world renowned rapper, poet, activist, humorist and cultural provocateur – has just wrapped work on the first video from his strongly-anticipated upcoming Epitaph release, Human The Death Dance, due May 8th. Lensed in Los Angeles with director Stoney Sharp, the clip for the single “Got Up This Morning” counts guests Buck 65 and Jolie Holland – who perform on the song – and cameos by Slug from Atmosphere, Brother Ali and labelmate DiVinCi from Sol.iLLaquists of Sound.
In related news, Francis will hit the road this spring in support of Human The Death Dance. Launching with a pair of dates in New York at the Bowery Ballroom on May 25th and 26th, Francis and his live band will headline a seven-week U.S. trek with support from the aforementioned Buck 65 and Alias. Following the headlining dates, Francis will then join the Rock The Bells Festival in New York City on July 28, San Bernadino, CA on August 11 and San Francisco, CA on August 18.
“It’s probably one of the most powerful projects I’ve put together to date,” the Providence, Rhode Island-bred Francis says. “It’s like my breakup album. There’s some real heavy and personal material on it.”
And early critical praise affirms this notion. In a 5-star review of the disc, URB writes, “Teeming with the kind of personality a live show begs for, Human the Death Dance comprises of 16 tracks that prove Sage can still spit that wry wit,” adding, “its tracks work together to form a cohesive, incredibly personal whole.”

Danzig's "Lost Tracks" to be released in May
If you've been craving new Danzig material, then get your music player ready. On May 29, evilive will release "The Lost Tracks of Danzig," a two-CD set comprised of 26 previously unreleased tracks that span Danzig's entire career. All of the tracks were recorded during the band's seven-album "arc" that began with 1988's "Danzig."
"Whenever I've made a new album, I've recorded more songs than were needed for the final CD," said Glenn Danzig. "The songs that make it onto the final album 'fit' or 'flow' together as a whole. Consequently, some tremendous Danzig songs have never been released, not because they weren't great, but because they didn't fit the overall vibe of the particular album, or for other reasons."
When Glenn began the "Lost Tracks" project, the songs were in various stages of completion - some were still in demo form, some had no vocals, some needed a different mix, a new bass or guitar track, or some other type of tweaking. So, after spending months tracking down and reviewing the original tapes, Glenn entered the studio and completed the tracks, handling the vocals and finishing all instrumental recording himself.
The 26 songs on "The Lost Tracks of Danzig" are presented in chronological order; the first two cuts are "Pain Like an Animal" and "When Death Had No Name," both songs that have their roots in late Samhain but evolved into two of the very first Danzig tracks and intended for the band's self-titled debut. Fans will also find a song entitled "Angels of the Seventh Dawn," originally recorded for the 1990 album "Danzig II: Lucifuge," "Crawl Across Your Killing Floor," considered for "Danzig 6: Satan's Child," and the controversial "White Devil Rise," which was recorded for 1994's "Danzig 4p" and is Glenn's conjecture as to what would happen if Louis Farrakhan incited the passive white race to rise up against and start a race war with the Black Islamic movement.
Danzig also liked to include cover songs on his albums so "The Lost Tracks" will feature T-Rex's "Buick McKane" (1992's "Danzig III: How The Gods Kill"), David Bowie's "Cat People" ("Danzig 7"), and "Caught In My Eye" by The Germs ("Danzig 6"). One of the CD's true treasures is a sparse acoustic version of "Come to Silver," a song that Glenn originally wrote for Johnny Cash (who reportedly loved it), then recorded it (with Jerry Cantrell on guitar) for 1996's "Danzig 5: Blackacidevil."
"The Lost Tracks of Danzig" will also contain a special 12-page booklet with a forward personally written by Glenn Danzig, a sentence or two with the history or an anecdote for each track, and plenty of vintage photos.
Long before Nine Inch nails, Marilyn Manson or Guns N' Roses, there was Glenn Danzig. Danzig is arguably the most versatile talent to emerge from hardcore's first wave -- a graphic designer, photographer, comic book publisher and composer who writes all his bands' music. His songs have been covered by Guns N' Roses, Metallica and My Chemical Romance. He's written for Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. Glenn Danzig has received many titles, from the Godfather of Dark Metal to a man of integrity, but most agree that over his three-decades career, his intense musical and lyrical statements have left a permanent mark on rock music.
Founder of the Misfits, that band pioneered dark horror/hardcore punk and has become a seminal band of the genre, despite only six years and a few albums. The goth metal-punk band Samhain quickly followed and in just another few years became a noted outfit. Darker than Samhain, Danzig's music evolved into a potent mix of gothic metal and blues with a Satanic twist. In 2006, the ever-surprising Glenn Danzig released his second classical album, "Black Aria 2," which debuted in the Top Ten - imagine, the Godfather of Dark Metal keeping company on the Billboard classical chart with Itzhak Perlman and Andrea Bocelli.

The Unseen preparing sixth studio album
Boston based The Unseen have announced plans to release their sixth studio album, Internal Salvation, on June 19th with Hellcat Records. A follow-up to 2005’s State of Discontent, the album was recorded over the past few months in Stoughton, Massachusetts with the group’s longtime friend and producer, Jim Siegel. Armed with new material from a two year stint on the road, the band wrapped recording in late March with eleven tracks of overtly aggressive punk.
“To me the new album starts right where State of Discontent left off,” explains frontman Mark Unseen. “We are still the unseen still playing real heavy hardcore punk but we are also not afraid to make a pro sounding album or to try something a bit different sometimes. We have always wanted to stay the same band but progress a little each album.”
The Unseen give listeners a heavy dose of what’s on their mind with Internal Salvation.
“Lyrically the album is mainly about not knowing what is going on and feeling like you’re at a point where you don’t know what to do to get ahead,” says Unseen.
Featuring tracks like “In Your Place” about the over-saturation and monotony of music today and the cover song “Talking Bombs” by iconic Boston hardcore band The Freeze.
Fresh off the heels of an extensive tour of the US, Canada and Europe, The Unseen will be playing the entire 2007 Warped Tour followed by headlining US tour.

Oldest Hanson is a daddy
Before you walk you have to crawl. That'swhat rocker Isaac Hanson is learning after the birth of first child, son Clarke Everett Hanson, delivered by wife Nicole this past Tuesday(4/3). Baby Everett weighed in at a healthy 8lb 12oz at an undisclosed hospital in the brothers' hometown of Tulsa, OK.
Isaac, the oldest brother from the Grammy-nominated trio HANSON, is preparing for another delivery this summer, when the band gives birth to its new 3CG Records album, THE WALK (out in the UK on April 30).
Says proud poppa Isaac of his first child: "His birth was an inspiration and I know that his presence in my life will continue to inspire me."
HANSON begin their tour of the UK and Ireland on Apr 13th.

This World Fair begins tour today
Minneapolis based rock band This World Fair will make their major label debut on August 14 with their self-titled album, released through Rethink/EMI. Prior to the release, the band will launch a 14-stop tour (including dates with Phantom Planet and Guster) throughout April and May (tour dates below), wrapping up with a show in their hometown on May 26.
This World Fair is comprised of lead vocalist, pianist and guitarist Chris Kalgren; guitarist Zack Carroll; bassist George Hadfield and drummer Jordan Medina. After committing the last two years to writing, recording and touring, Kalgren and the band have emerged delivering highly emotive, insightful and melodic rock to their recordings and live shows. The band pulls from a wide variety of musical influences, but prefers to let their growing legion of fans define their sound. With a heavily trafficked MySpace page (www.myspace.com/thisworldfair) and a growing national fan base, This World Fair is bracing for a big year ahead.
This World Fair’s original song, “Don’t Make Me Wait,” is prominently featured in the upcoming DreamWorks thriller Disturbia. The film, directed by D.J. On May 8th Mono vs Stereo Recording Artist Chasing Victory Is Set To Release "Fiends".
Hailing from Camilla Georgia, Chasing Victory has just created a monster release titled "Fiends".
“We all have fiends living inside ourselves. Some are dormant and hibernating. Others are alive and vicious. But when we bring our inner enemies to light, they are disarmed and powerless,” states front man Adam Harrell.

It is in this spirit that Chasing Victory has overcome their inner demons to bring forth their sophomore effort, smashing sonic barriers and destroying scene obstacles. Originally labeled a screamo outfit with their heralded debut “I Call this Abandonment” , “Fiends” is neither core nor just a futile exercise in fashion. This is an album that forges its own path, a path of classic rock influence and rock n’ roll pioneering. Heavy and bombastic without being pretentious, it is a dynamic balance of brutality and melody.
“Fiends” is very diverse and each song has something that sets it apart from the rest. We used a lot of cleaner guitar tracks and let the bass and drums drive the songs to keep from masking everything with thick distortion, which has become very popular these days. The vocals on the record sound completely different also. There is a lot more singing and I owe it all to Jeff Buckley and our producer Nathan Dantzler. Nathan really help me capture a vocal sound that I felt comfortable with and steered me away from screaming as much.”
Relentless yet tasteful, “Fiends” is a much-needed diversion from the glut of heavy music today. Song-oriented without losing the band’s trademark riffs, a throwback to a time when music was pure, real, honest, and spontaneous. This is the album that this band needed to make. Muse-like falsetto meets STP-esque choruses and the occasional gang vocal, and Harrell’s dirt-laden growls. The whole of the album is fast-paced, though diverse enough in tempo and guitar approach to avoid becoming stale. Consider the track “Wolves,” as attitude-infused as the Wolfmothers of the world and as melodic as The Foo Fighters. The guitar lines are ambient, and Harrell’s vocals display great diversity, with an incessant chorus as the payoff. Another key number is the title track “Fiends.” More straightforward than any other song on the record, it is easily in the category of melodic radio rock, akin to the AFI.
“Fiends” is rich in imagery, as Harrell and company obviously devoted great effort to lyricism and concept. Yet, at the core of the record is a spiritual foundation; the message is that by exposing one’s vices they are disarmed.“Most of the characters are battling with some kind of addiction, such as sex, drugs, alcohol, or even arrogance. Although these are serious topics, the songs have a sarcastic over-the-top quality about them. Like the way old horror movies were scary in their time, but are funny to us now.”
Through constant touring with a host of industry powerhouses (such as Stretch Arm Strong, Project 86, Flee The Seen, Sullivan, Showbread, As Cities Burn, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, The Showdown, and Chiodos), as well as appearing on the Vans Warped Tour the last two summers, Chasing Victory has become one of the top selling artists on the Mono vs. Stereo roster. But Fiends is in an entirely different category from their previous material, and should catapult the band into consideration as an industry elite. This, to match with a live show that has developed into one of the most captivating around--thanks in no small measure to their enigmatic and animated front man--and you have the formula for something special in the months to come.
“We just wanted to make a balls-to-the-wall rock record. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. These days in music, it’s so easy to sing the same two-note chorus, play the same chuggy riffs, throw it into Pro Tools, and slap it up your Myspace page before Beethoven has time to roll over in his grave. We approached everything in the exact opposite way as that last sentence.”
