For 30 years, Loverboy has been “Working for the Weekend,” delighting audiences around the world since forming in Calgary, Alberta, when vocalist Mike Reno was introduced to local guitar hot shot Paul Dean, both veterans of several bands on the scene. And now they’re back, having reunited with their original engineer, legendary producer Bob Rock [Metallica, Aerosmith, The Cure, Bon Jovi], who worked under Bruce Fairbairn at the time. The band recorded two new songs with Rock, “Heartbreaker” and “No Tomorrow,” which could to be a prelude for a new album.
“He phoned Mike and me out of the blue and told us he had a song that might work for us that he’d love to produce,” says Dean. “He sent it over and we just flipped out. It’s a great, kick-ass Loverboy song.
“It was just fantastic to be on the same page with everybody else in the band again. We had been through several false starts recording-wise over the years. Mike was really inspired this time. It was a great experience. I think these tracks are some of the best work we’ve ever done.”
Not just Canada’s greatest rock export, Loverboy made its mark south of the border, with four multi-platinum albums including the four-million-selling Get Lucky, and a trio of double-platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s Keep It Up and 1985’s Lovin’ Every Minute of It. Their string of hits includes, in addition to the anthem “Working for the Weekend,” such arena rock staples as “Lovin’ Every Minute of It,” “This Could Be the Night,” “Hot Girls in Love,” “Heaven In Your Eyes,” “Turn Me Loose,” “When It’s Over,” “Heaven In Your Eyes” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts.” Their pop culture credibility was cemented by a recent 30 Rock episode in which Scott Adsit’s amateur musician Pete Hornberger revealed he was actually Loverboy’s original bassist, showing him inserted into vintage ‘80s footage of the band wailing away on “Working for the Weekend,” which you can see at http://www.hulu.com/watch/217096/30-rock-its-never-too-late-for-now.
The group still includes original members Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve (a former member of Dean and Frenette’s pre-Loverboy band Streetheart), who replaced the late Scott Smith on bass, and continues a healthy touring schedule around the world.
“I look at our concerts as a 100-minute experience,” says Dean, who still claims to be able to fit into the same pair of red leather pants he wore on the “Queen of the Broken Hearts” video in 1983. “I’m a normal guy up until 10 minutes before we hit the stage. Then the heart rate goes up and I consciously step into the bubble. And I don’t come out of it until 30 seconds after that last cymbal smash and I walk off-stage. It’s a great stress release, better than riding a Harley.”
Perhaps the band’s most famous song is “Working for the Weekend,” which has fueled a generation’s dreams of toiling every day for the chance to celebrate come Friday night. Dean realizes it has taken on a whole new meaning these days.
“You’re lucky if you can work for the weekend now,” he says. “We’re all fortunate to be doing that.”
With four decades under his belt, Dean sees no end in sight for Loverboy… or himself.
“My dream has always been to play guitar and entertain people,” he enthuses. “There’s no feeling like looking out in the audience and seeing them grinning ear to ear, everyone on the same wavelength. And once we start with the megahits, the place goes crazy. That’s why we do what we do and will continue.”
Still “Working for the Weekend” 30 years later, Loverboy’s catalog includes some of arena-rock’s most enduring anthems, and they are about to add to that legacy.

STRYPER GET BACK TO THEIR ROOTS ON COVERS-HEAVY SET, 'THE COVERING'
Christian rockers Stryper are offering fans a headbanging view of who their influences were early on, with the arrival of an almost entire album's worth of covers, 'The Covering.' Set for release on February 15th via Big3 Records, the album includes twelve rocking covers, as well as an all-new original tune, "God." And most significantly, the album marks the return of original bassist Tim Gaines back into the Stryper fold, setting up the first Stryper release in years to feature the definitive line-up of Michael Sweet (vocals/guitar), Oz Fox (guitar), Tim Gaines (bass), and Robert Sweet (drums).
According to Michael Sweet, the impetus for putting out a mostly covers set was a simple one. "Every Stryper album is pretty serious and pretty bold in the lyrical faith sense of the word. We just wanted to roll our sleeves up, cut loose, and have some fun." And when it came time to pick out a listing of tunes to cover, all the band had to do was look back upon their club days. "Growing up, before Stryper was even Stryper, we were a cover band. We played Gazzarri's on the Strip for years - we would do originals but also do covers, as well. We always did Priest covers and Maiden covers, all those bands that we grew up on and influenced us."
What fans get is a CD that runs the gamut from 1970's era classic rock (Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," Deep Purple's "Highway Star," Kiss' "Shout It Out Loud," etc.) to 1980's era heavy metal (Black Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell," the Scorpions' "Blackout," "Iron Maiden's "The Trooper," etc.).
"A few things we set out to do on this album was to stay true to the original - we didn't want to disrespect the original versions," explains Michael. "I'm never going to sound like Bruce Dickinson or Ronnie James Dio, nor would I ever try to. And having me sing the song puts our own spin on it. We just all did our own thing and with our own touches and feel - Robert, Tim, Oz, and myself - it has that Stryper feel to it as well."
Big3 Records Chairman Bill Edwards adds, "We are excited to allow Stryper the creative freedom to do what they do best, and take this album to the next level. We are very excited about working with the band and helping make 'The Covering' a widespread success."
To support 'The Covering,' Stryper is planning a tour that begins in March, and when it comes to the set list, it will contain quite a few surprises for longtime fans.
"We're probably going to pull out four Stryper songs that haven't been played in the set in years. And then we're probably going to do four covers. And then we've got a whole slew of other Stryper songs that we've been playing for a long time. So we probably have 20 songs in the set."
Stryper fans rejoice, more anthemic metal will soon be on the way!

Bright Eyes, midway through its tour for The People’s Key, headlines the Ground Control Touring showcase at Auditorium Shores. The concert also features infectious Catskill folk-rockers The Felice Brothers; Middle Brother, indie trifecta Dawes, Delta Spirit and Deer Tick; the always exuberant Man Man, known for frenetic live performances; and rising Philly singer-songwriter Kurt Vile and the Violators.

The “Caliventura Remix EP,” out on March 15th , sees US based producers Cut Chemist, J Boogie, Jeremy Sole,Daedelus and DJ Day giving the remix treatment to a handful of tracks from Quantic and His Combo Ba?rbaro’s immensely acclaimed ‘Tradition In Transition’ album. The EPalso features an alternative, previously unreleasedversion of the album track, “Albela.”
This essential EP comes in a full color picturesleeve featuring a photographtaken in Colombia by the celebrated LA-based photographer B+ (Mochilla), who has become key contributor to theQuantic aesthetic in recent years, and whose critically acclaimed body of work includes the famous shot for DJ Shadow’s ‘Endtroducing.’ Inside the beautiful sleeve, you’ll also find an exclusive download card with all five vinyl tracks available on mp3, plus five bonus goodies.
Quantic is an umbrella name for UK-born, Will Holland: acclaimed Producer, Musician, DJ for over 15 years, evolving and involving various styles like Funk & Jazz to Electronic & Folk music through to Latin, Reggae, Dub & Cumbia. Holland has released over ten full-length albums internationally through the label, Tru Thoughts, across six different projects ranging from his DJ/Producer/Remixer moniker that has packed dance floors from Bulgaria to Buenos Aires, Quantic, to Latin-tinged, reggae and dub exploration, Flowering Inferno, to a full-out soul band, The Quantic Soul Orchestra.
Based in the musical epicenter of Cali, Colombia since 2007, Holland has been exploring cumbias, salsa and Afro-Colombian music through his particular beat-focused, electronic and funk lens. His latest live band project, Quantic y Su Combo Bárbaro, a carefully assembled international cast of musical creators including virtuosic salsa pianist Alfredo Linares and Pacific folklore singer Nidia Gongora,is a bold snapshot of an ever-evolvingmusical landscape in the Americas. Holland also works and exchanges with a cross-section of artists and producers innovatively shaping contemporary music from Latin America as we speak.
‘One of the songs to be remixed on this EP is ‘Un Canto A Mi Tierra’ featuring a stunning vocal turn from Colombian folkloresinger Nidia Go?ngora – the original version, released as a single and video last year, has had over 150,000 YouTube hits andcontinues to be adored around the world as one of the most popular cuts from the album. The reworks from J-Boogie and Cut Chemist will doubtless bring even more new fans to the track. You’ll also find the Daedelus and Computer Jay remixof the glorious instrumental track, “Undelivered Letter,” which flips this tune on its head - from classically beautiful, sweepingsoundscape to up- to-the-minute glitch fest - in a boldand successful piece of genre- hopping.
