Bassist Jerry Scheff autobiography to publish

Way Down

Playing Bass with Elvis, Dylan, the Doors, and More

The Autobiography of Jerry Scheff

The story of a music veteran who has played with the most memorable acts in rock’n’roll

In this candid and perceptive memoir of his 45-year career, bassist Jerry Scheff takes us onto Elvis’s private jet, on tour with Bob Dylan, and into the studio with the Doors. Way Down: Playing Bass with Elvis, Dylan, the Doors, and More ($19.99, Backbeat Books) opens with Scheff and the rest of Elvis’s rhythm section (the TCB band) learning of the King’s death while en route to a tour date, a pivotal moment for Scheff, the band, and the world at large. From there, he takes us on a nonlinear journey from his roots in San Francisco to behind the scenes working with Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, the Association, Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, and Nancy Sinatra, just to name a few. Scheff says, “This is not written as a reference book, a history book, or a work of fiction. It is my life as a musician in the culture and counterculture of the music business. My life!”

Way Down is a sleeves rolled up perspective from having worked side by side with the great artists in their factories. This is a tale of a man who has truly grown a career from a genuine love of music and of his instrument. It is an exciting inside view of the evolution, craft, and work of making rock’n’roll.

Jerry Scheff (Berwickshire, Scotland) is a native of San Francisco. In the early 1960s, after a brief spell in the Navy and time spent building his chops in Southern California, he took the leap to move to Los Angeles, where he quickly rose to the top among the droves of pro session players. In the late sixties, he began his work with Elvis Presley. He has played with countless artists and continues to tour with the TCB band.

Cage the Elephant to tour

Kicking off 2012 with a massive tour throughout Australia, Cage the Elephant will be embarking on a hefty spring season of live shows, including a number of festivals in the US including 2012 Buzzfest, 2012 Edgefest, and the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City, as well as Lollapalooza dates in Brazil and Chile, and more.

Hailed as “…one of rock’s best young bands,” by Rolling Stone, Cage The Elephant had a successful 2011 with the release of their album Thank You Happy Birthday, a wildly-successful headlining North American tour and their critically acclaimed fall dates with the Foo Fighters. Cage The Elephant is continuing the momentum with the release of their concert DVD Live From the Vic In Chicago, which was released last month and now with the recently announced tour dates (listed below).

Released on January 11th, 2011, Thank You Happy Birthday (RCA Records), Cage The Elephant’s sophomore album, has garnered the band rave reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone, New York Times, LA Times, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, People and Alternative Press who heralded it “one of the best rock albums of the year.” Their single “Shake Me Down” held the #1 spot for 5 consecutive weeks on the Alternative Radio chart and Billboard’s Year End Chart places “Shake Me Down” at #2 on both of 2011’s year end Rock Songs and Alternative Songs charts. With performances on The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, it’s easy to see why Rolling Stone named Cage The Elephant “one of rock’s best young bands” and Thank You Happy Birthday as one of the best albums 2011. In conjunction with the release of their third single “Aberdeen” from Thank You Happy Birthday, the band crafted an inventive and heartbreaking claymation tale directed by Isaac Rentz about a lonely Dragon's futile quest to befriend the human race; a story created by CTE lead singer Matt Shultz.

Below find a list of upcoming tour dates.

La Dispute to tour

Grand Rapids band La Dispute have announced tour dates for their upcoming Spring tour. The tour begins on March 24 in Minneapolis, MI, heading to the West Coast for shows in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland, before heading back east to the East Coast including shows in Philadelphia and Bowery Ballroom in New York. The tour will feature support by Balance & Compusure, All Get Out, and Sainthood Reps. For full list of tour dates, please see below.

La Dispute is touring to support their sophomore album, Wildlife, released on No Sleep Records last October, which debuted at 135 on the Billboard Top 200. The follow-up to their 2008 LP Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair, Wildlife is a nearly 60-minute musical examination of the twenty-something search for purpose; an exploration of the struggles that confront, damage, and redefine us inevitably in life through 14 tracks of new material. Set up as a collection of "short stories" complete with the author's own notes and sectioned thematically by four monologues, Wildlife discusses the difficulties inherent in growing up by interweaving the author's own ambiguous loss and struggle for meaning alongside the stories it compelled him to document. Recorded at both Drasik Studios in Chicago and StadiumRed in New York with Andrew Everding (from the band Thursday) and Joe Pedulla using no artificial reverb, La Dispute's sophomore full length organically captures the sound of five friends committed to pushing their own creative boundaries while still retaining a desire to create honest and emotional music.

NPR streamed one of the songs from the record, "Harder Harmonies," praising the band, saying: "La Dispute has all the hooks of a pop-punk band raised on At the Drive-In, as well as a surprising sense of restrained propulsion for a hardcore band. But La Dispute's most distinctive weapon is vocalist Jordan Dreyer, who alternates an almost conversational, raspy scream with spoken word." Listen to the song now at the link below:

http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2011/08/23/139855535/la-dispute-half-spoken-explosions

La Dispute is five close friends from the Upper Midwest with a firm passion for the concept of music and art as a medium for making new friends. As a result, La Dispute strives to make music that is artistically, technically, and emotionally engaging in hopes of establishing legitimate connections with any and all interested people, while encouraging dialogue between those people and themselves about things in life that truly matter and that truly last. La Dispute also carries a firm passion for the relevance of a live show, both for the bands involved and for the people in attendance, and will go to the grave believing that the environment created when strangers come together despite their differences to celebrate one important thing is invaluable and should not under any circumstances be taken for granted.

Origin to tour

Genre defining technical death metal giants, ORIGIN, will tour the United States this April/May on an epic headlining run that will bring together some of today’s best brutal bands. Groups like spastic-vegetarian-gore-grinders CATTLE DECAPITATION, psychedelically influenced tech-deathsters DECREPIT BIRTH, groove laden death-gore mongers ABORTED, and underground buzz band sensations RINGS OF SATURN and BATTLECROSS. Commented gentlemen drummer/wordsmith John Longstreth of ORIGIN:

"Hey ladies n' germs, it's Longstreth of ORIGIN here with a little dirt on what we currently have on the table. We're calling it OCCUPATION DOMINATION 2012. Simply put, it’s the most brutal death metal tour package of the spring and it’s starting up in the end of April and running all the way through till the end of May. This tour is for fans of the extreme, blast beat driven, face melting, skull crushing, type of DEATH METAL that parents and young children are still afraid of. In addition to ORIGIN, we have CATTLE DECAPITATION, ABORTED, DECREPIT BIRTH, and new comers RINGS OF SATURN and BATTLECROSS coming through your town to lay waste to your local music venues. It would be appropriate to consider these shows more endurance tests than metal concerts. Come out and treat yourself to death metal boot camp this spring to ensure yourself that you will be in top shape for the next ‘progressive’ core band or washed up ‘old school death metal’ fest tour that will be sure to roll through the states soon after. Cheers and see you there!"

Entity was released on June 7, 2011, and was recorded at Chapman Recording Studios in Lenexa, Kansas with longtime engineer and friend Robert Rebeck. Artwork was handled this time around by Colin Marks (NEVERMORE, KATAKLYSM, EXODUS).

One of the most intense and technical forces of the contemporary death metal world, ORIGIN has returned to stake its claim as the leader of metal's new wave of extremity with its fifth studio effort, Entity. As expected, the death the band continues to churn out frantic, hell-paced grids of metal torment, but now further complements the arrangements with a newfound propensity for churning grooves and the hook-laden approach that first reared its ugly, but accessible head on the band's 2007 offering, Antithesis. As stated multiple times in the past, ORIGIN proves once again that they stand head and shoulders above their peers.
