Rose Leaf Ragtime Club event Dec. 30 in Monrovia
THE ROSE LEAF RAGTIME CLUB, which meets on the last Sunday of every month, will have its next MUSICAL GET-TOGETHER on Sunday, December 30 at Wang’s Place, 120 E. Lemon Ave., Monrovia, in the old town area. After stepping into the foyer, enter the separate meeting room through the door to your right. The meeting time will be from 1:00 p.m. until approximately 4:30 p.m.
Owner Jeffrey Wang prepares a scrumptious all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet with champagne and other drinks included at $13.99 or we may order from his extensive menu. Free parking is available in several nearby city-owned lots or on the street nearby. Most street parking is unrestricted on Sundays.
The Rose Leaf Ragtime Club features performers on piano and other instruments playing ragtime and other related types of music. All performers and listeners are welcome. The only charge is to non-performers who are asked to make a $2.00 donation.

Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right, or a commodity that should be bought and sold like any other article of commerce? Director Stephanie Soechtig’s feature documentary is an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water. From the producers of Who Killed the Electric Car? and I.O.U.S.A., Tapped is a film that examines the role of the bottled water industry and its effects on health, climate change, pollution and reliance on oil. It is a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims to privatize and sell back the one resource that ought never to become a commodity, our water.
As Tapped puts forth, any time you drink bottled water, you may be putting your health at risk, as well as contributing to one of the most massive environmental waste nightmares of all time. There is a simple, safe, green solution to this dilemma. According to Charles Fishman, author of The Big Thirst: the Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water “…your tap water is as safe as or safer than your bottled water.” Nonetheless, Americans buy 29 billion single-serve bottles of water every year. And only around a quarter of those bottles get recycled.
After the screening, there will be a panel of representatives from our local water districts to discuss issues raised in the film and answer questions from the audience.
There will be light refreshments and a raffle, so wear your lucky socks!

Rush iBook out today
On December 18, 2012, RUSH will release their first ever iBook for their classic album 2112. The iBook will consist of unpublished pictures, black and white ink art and pencil sketches for every comic book cell, and preview music for the newly remastered Mastered for iTunes (mFit) audio of 2112 with 3 bonus live tracks.
Originally released in 1976, Rush’s epic, landmark release 2112 was their creative and commercial breakthrough as well as one of the band’s most highly regarded releases among both fans and critics alike. With lyrics written by Neil Peart, and influenced by author Ayn Rand, 2112kicks off with the ambitious seven-suite title track (originally side one), set in a futuristic world run by the “Priests of the Temples of Syrinx” who regulate “every single facet of every life,” which includes books, music, work and play. “2112” conveys the story of humanity’s instinctual, inner need for one’s free will.

Sean Bones to tour
Sean Bones just announced a winter tour in support of his critically album Buzzards Boy, which was released this spring on S/S Friends. Sean followed the album up this fall with the single "United" which was recorded Converse Rubber Tracks in Brooklyn. The track premiered on Noisey and is also available to post and share via SoundCloud. Sean Bones will play two dates in NYC this month before heading to Southern California for several shows that will include stops at Bardot and The Bootleg with PAPA.
This month also marks the release of Pure Portals- a zine that features drawings and collages made by Sean over the year. In addition to art work, there will be unreleased tracks included in the packaging. The DIY effort is intended to put exclusive content in "people's hands instead of hard drives" and offers a look at Sean's process which is increasingly concerned with both visual and musical forms. The tracks on Sean Bones sophomore album Buzzards Boy are swathed in reverby surf guitars and loose percussion. It's easy to imagine hearing this album out doors, at night. A full listen reveals a wide range of influences digested into something wholly Bones' own. "Tell Me Again" is a folky harmonium piece played over what sounds like the Miami Sound Machine. "Four Dub" explores open space and urgency. The sublime "Black Gold" starts with a scruffy hip hop beat until giving way to another one of those swoony boy-girl ballads that he's good at.
At the heart of Buzzards Boy is a romantic young man, worried about the world and checking himself for imagined damage. Somewhere in the storm came a renewed sense of purpose. Fittingly, the exuberant lead single "Here Now" was written last. Backed by Fool's Gold's Garrett Ray and Lewis Pesacov, the song brims with energy as an ecstatic Bones proclaims, "I'm here now, hold it down!." Whether he's here to remind himself or the rest of us doesn't matter - the track is his most confident and inspiring to date.
