Since a gardener's Eden can quickly turn to purgatory for inquisitive pets, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) wants to remind pet parents that many plants and flowers have the potential to cause life-threatening illnesses in both dogs and cats. One such plant, and a favorite of many gardeners, is Brunfelsia, also known as "Morning, Noon, and Night" or "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow." An ornamental plant that thrives in the gardens of warmer climates, or year-round in pots, Brunfelsia has fragrant flowers that bloom in a vivid purple and gradually change to lavender before fading to white.
According to a recently-published study by Dr. Safdar Khan, veterinary toxicologist for the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center, dogs seem to be particularly attracted to the plant's seeds and berries and are most susceptible to Brunfelsia poisoning. From 2001 to 2006, the Center treated 38 cases, mostly from California, involving 42 dogs. Of these cases, three dogs died as a result of ingesting the plant.
"The most commonly affected breeds are Labrador and golden retrievers," says Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and director of the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center. "Uncommonly lively and active, these dogs can be more likely to get into the plants' seeds and leaves."
"If pets consume any part of the plant, they can become ill within hours and develop gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting and diarrhea, as well as tremors, seizures and muscle rigidity that makes the animal appear to be in a "sawhorse" stance, closely resembling the signs of ingestion of the once-common rodent poison, strychnine," says Dr. Khan. "Brunfelsia toxicity can progress very rapidly to a potentially lethal situation, so it's critical that pet parents seek immediate veterinary care."
One California-based hound dog experienced stiff limbs and excessive drooling after ingesting several seeds from the plant. After speaking with Dr. Paul Eubig, another toxicologist at the Center, the dog's owner brought the suffering canine to a local veterinarian, who provided supportive care. Another case involved a young terrier puppy in Florida who developed life-threatening seizures after consuming part of a Brunfelsia plant. With the owner availing the Center's resources, as well as the services of a local emergency veterinarian, the dog eventually made a full recovery.
"The veterinarian administered medication to treat the seizures," says Dr. Hansen. "And we're happy to report that the pup is happy and healthy today as result of his owner's immediate action."
As with any toxins, pet parents should take the necessary precautions to prevent their furry family members from coming into contact with Brunfelsia. Consider keeping the plant in an area where pets can't reach it or replace it with a non-toxic alternative.

Ford Amphitheatre ready for new season
Reflecting the vast, vibrant, cross-fertilizing panorama of the Los Angeles region, the Ford Amphitheatre 2008 offerings embrace global and pop culture and expand the boundaries of contemporary performance. The 21-week season opens on May 28 with the West Coast premiere of Norman’s Ark, a new musical directed by Peter Schneider, the Tony Award-winning producer of The Lion King. The closing event on October 4 is a Hip Hop Dance Festival staged by J.U.i.C.E. (Justice by Uniting in Creative Energy) and Antics Performance. Last season’s J.U.i.C.E. presentation, the first evening of street dance presented by the Ford, was hailed by the Los Angeles Times’ Lewis Segal as “expanding [hip hop’s] creative horizons.”
The Ford Amphitheatre season is a program of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and is produced in collaboration with Los Angeles County-based arts organizations. DANCE
Mantra Theatre, in cooperation with Thai Health and Information Services, Inc., will present the Ford’s first evening devoted to Thai arts: the “Legend of Chao Phraya, Siamese River of Life,” an original production featuring artists from Thailand and Los Angeles encompassing Thai dance, boxing, spear and sword fighting and live music including a Thai drum ensemble (August 30).
Four Los Angeles-based contemporary dance companies will be making their first appearances at the Ford. Backhausdance, led by Jennifer Backhaus, premieres “Grass” (September 19). Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project and Catch Me Bird, companies led by married couples, share a bill called “Sans Detour” (September 5). Baker & Tarpaga premiere “Disorder Inside Order,” based on the assassination of African journalist Norbert Zongo, and Catch Me Bird unveils “Silk,” which details the blurring of their on and offstage lives through daring aerial choreography. Culture Shock Los Angeles Dance Troupe introduces, “A Beautiful Struggle,” an original hip hop work inspired by Ray Bradbury’s novel “Fahrenheit 451” and true life experiences about four people who dare to create in a time when artistic expression has been outlawed (July 25).
Kayamanan Ng Lahi Philippine Folk Arts, which has appeared on shared dance bills at the Ford in the past, presents a whole evening for the first time. “Magkaugnay: Cultural Connections in Philippine Music and Dance” brings together the many streams of Filipino culture: hill tribe rituals, Spanish-influenced festivities and drum-gong dance and music (September 13).
Returning dance series artists include blue13 dance company in “KHEL! A Bollywood Bedtime Story,” (August 23); Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet introducing “Tercera Raiz,” an exploration of the African influence on Latin American arts created by Ghanaian and Mexican choreographers (July 26); J.U.i.C.E.’s evening of street dance featuring Antics Performance, The Get Down Dolls, Lux Aeterna, Outer Circle and guest artists (October 4); and Viver Brasil Dance Company’s journey through the Afro-Brazilian myths of water spirits and deities (July 5).
For the second year in a row, Target is sponsoring the dance series. Student and child tickets to Target Dance Series at the Ford events for full-time students and children 12 and under will be available for $5 rather than the regular Ford student/child price of $12 thanks to the grant from Target. The Big!World!Fun! Family Series encompasses 8 Saturday morning, hour-long performances in July and August designed for children ages 4 to 10 and their parents and grandparents. “Nature Tales” is the series theme and highlights include author and performer José Luis Orozco in a program featuring Latin American songs, games and rhymes (July 12), Angahara Dance Ensemble in the rich tapestry of “PANCHATANTRA: Animal Fables of India” (August 2), the ultra-athletic performers of Diavolo Dance Theater transforming from caterpillars to butterflies (August 9) and DAFRA West African Drum and Dance Ensemble with an array of indigenous instruments and costumes (August 30). FILM
The Ford is the biggest venue in which the Los Angeles Film Festival presents screenings and in the past has hosted L.A. premieres of such films as “March of the Penguins” and “Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten.” The festival’s 2008 programming, including the June 20-22 and 26-27 Ford dates, will be announced by June 1.
OUTFEST 2008 Under the Stars, part of the 26th Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, presents five nights of screenings plus the festival’s awards presentation July 16-20. Film information will be available after June 1.
J.A.M. (Jazzed And Motivated) SESSIONS
New this year, J.A.M. Sessions are FREE and offer participants the opportunity to sing, play and dance under the guidance of Ford 2008 artists. Grammy-nominated Imani Winds bring new textures to the flute-oboe-clarinet-horn-bassoon combo in their “Afro Blue” program featuring music of Mongo Santamaria, Astor Piazzolla, Paquito d‘Rivera and others (August 1). An Evening of Independence: A Celebration of Singers, Songwriters and Music bridges the gap between the online world and live performance with a roster of emerging indie artists (August 10). The Los Angeles Jewish Symphony mingles world and classical sounds in exploring the link between the cultures of the Sephardic Jews of Spain and the Middle East with those of Latin America (August 24). The Ford is the Los Angeles stop on the U.S. tour of Brazilian singer-composer and Latin Grammy winner Djavan (June 13). One hundred drummers of TAIKOPROJECT team with Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka, who brought Japanese taiko drumming to America 40 years ago, and his San Francisco Taiko Dojo to mark the anniversary of that landmark event (July 12-13). Jarocho and huasteco music are in the spotlight in “Night in Veracruz” as Tien Huicani, named Mexico’s best folk group, joins L.A.-based Conjunto Tenocelomeh, Conjunto Jardin and others (September 20). Music as well as dance of Mexico will also be celebrated in Fiesta Mexicana (September 27).

Sound and Fury to release new effort & playing Bamboozle
There was a time when rock n' roll was regarded as some kind of terrible, howling, beast from the abyss, ready to pounce upon and devour the unsuspecting youth of the world--hurling them into a wild life of freedom and outrageous adventure.Well, the beast is back! Toronto Canada's SOUND AND FURY is undeniably all about the rock, as heard throughout their self-titled debut full-length album, 'SOUND AND FURY' due June 24th via Rebel Youth Records/MRI-RED Distribution.
"I've had a lot of crazy experiences and rowdy times," recalls SOUND AND FURY singer/songwriter, Luke Metcalf. "I mainly write about when I was in high school and then afterward, when I was living homeless with the gutter punks in California.”
"Right from the start I knew exactly what I wanted when I wrote the music and lyrics for this album,” continues Metcalf. “I wanted to make a killer rock album to party your ass off to...an album to let loose, leave all the bulls**t behind and run wild to. When I hit high school I went totally out of control. It was just a rampage of crazy partying. At the time, I was incredibly pissed off and f**ked up because I was dealing with a lot of really harsh s**t... but I decided: "f**k it all... I'm gonna have some f**king fun"... and I managed to have a hell of a lot of fun. I made some really great friends and had some really wild times and this is what the album is all about."
In hooking up with guitarists Daz and Griffin, bassist John Kerns, and drummer Chris Avalos, Metcalf has found the band to play the music he lives to create. SOUND AND FURY is all about power chords and no-bullshit rock 'n roll, total sonic assault.
"We are all huge fans of 1970's rock and punk. AC/DC were at their peak between 76'-80', same with The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and The Misfits, and of course Zeppelin and Sabbath were at their best earlier in the decade. This music was ferocious! Dangerous! Like a wild wolf let out of its cage. That's what we're all about, creating no-bullshit Rock N' Roll to get down and dirty and party your ass off to!!!"
In addition to perfectly capturing their raw power on album, the group has been gaining fans by the truckload by opening up for Canada’s leading pop-punk band, Sum 41, throughout the great white north (as well as the U.K.).

Straight from the get-go, they plugged in and turned the volume up to 11. This band had elements of AC/DC, G n’ R, Sabbath, and the Pistols (if you don’t know those bands...then quit music). The vocals were incredible. The singer wore a cool bowler hat and gave the crowd more than they needed to rock out. It was like watching Alex from ‘Clockwork Orange’ in the band. And the lead guitarist...BAM! That dude was on f@#k’n fire! With songs like ’18,’ ‘Night of the Ghouls,’ and the catchy sing-along ‘Bad Touch’...this band is only going upwards from here.”

In June Esotouric, the eclectic bus adventure company that explores the secret heart of LA, partners with venerable Pasadena bookseller Vroman's for a special edition of THE BIRTH OF NOIR. This four-hour luxury bus tour celebrates the life, work, myths and passions of hard-boiled American novelist James M. Cain through his best known books, "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "Mildred Pierce" and "Double Indemnity," and how their screen adaptations created a unique American genre: Film Noir. How did East Coast sophisticate Cain go from editor of "The New Yorker" to populist novelist accused of writing dirty books?
The tour explores the writer's life and work with a focus on his time in Southern California,where his observations on Malibu, Hollywood, Pasadena and the low rent 'burbs of Glendale are as provocative today as they were seventy years ago. The tour will also cover the artisans who transformed Cain's tales into movies, including Billy Wilder, Raymond Chandler, Joan Crawford and Lana Turner.
"The Birth of Noir: James M. Cain's Southern California Nightmare" is a complex portrait of a fascinating character who was seduced and transformed by his time in the Southland, a hard working movie industry professional who sank into drink and despair, ultimately a uniquely Californian artist.
Hosted by Esotouric's Richard Schave, the tour draws on Cain's essays, short stories, novels, films and the memories of his friends and colleagues to paint a portrait of LA in the 1930s and 1940s through the eyes of the writer. The tour spans Hollywood to Glendale and along old Route 66, and includes illuminating visits to Forest Lawn Memorial Park (site of the funeral of Mildred Pierce's "other" daughter, Ray), the Glendale Train Station where the "Double Indemnity" murder plot played out, and the punchline to a Billy Wilder joke so subtle, it's taken 63 years for anyone to get. The Clark Brothers to perform on "American Idol"
19 Recordings/Interscope/Universal Records South recording artist The Clark Brothers will perform on American Idol this Wednesday, April 2, 9:00 – 10:00pm ET, live on FOX. The show will announce the results from the previous evening’s competition and Dolly Parton will also perform. Rancid on the road and almost done with new effort
With their highly anticipated new record nearing completion, the punk rock veterans Rancid are turning their attention towards a new project – a summer tour that will mark their first live shows since 2006.
Rancid – Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Lars Frederiksen (vocals, guitar), Matt Freeman (bass, vocals) and Branden Steineckert (drums) – have dedicated the last several months to perfecting their seventh studio album. Working with Epitaph president Brett Gurewitz, who helmed the project as producer, and mixer Joe Barresi (Tool, Bad Religion), the album is slated for release later this year.
Rancid depart on April 5th for a week of shows in Japan, a mini-tour which includes headlining the Punkspring festival in Tokyo and Osaka, reuniting Rancid with 15,000 of their closest friends each night.
It has been two years since the last Rancid tour, and five years since the last Rancid record. 2008 promises to be an exhilarating year for both the band and Rancid fans alike.

Rancid – Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Lars Frederiksen (vocals, guitar), Matt Freeman (bass, vocals) and Branden Steineckert (drums) – have dedicated the last several months to perfecting their seventh studio album. Working with Epitaph president Brett Gurewitz, who helmed the project as producer, and mixer Joe Barresi (Tool, Bad Religion), the album is slated for release later this year.
Rancid depart on April 5th for a week of shows in Japan, a mini-tour which includes headlining the Punkspring festival in Tokyo and Osaka, reuniting Rancid with 15,000 of their closest friends each night.
It has been two years since the last Rancid tour, and five years since the last Rancid record. 2008 promises to be an exhilarating year for both the band and Rancid fans alike.

Story of the Year's newest out April 22
St. Louis alternative rock heavyweights Story of the Year will release their hotly anticipated new album, The Black Swan, on April 22nd. Like the title suggests, the group’s third studio album is anything but predictable. Combining the addictive choruses of their critically acclaimed album Page Avenue and the heaviness of In The Wake of Determination, The Black Swan transcends previous releases as their boldest and most accessible album to date.
Featuring the smash hit single “Wake Up” (mixed by Chris Lord Alge) and the piano driven ballad, “Terrified,” The Black Swan was produced by John Feldmann (Page Avenue, The Used) and “Elvis” Baskette (Chevelle, Escape The Fate).
“Making this record felt like starting over,” says frontman Dan Marsala. “We’re like a brand new band. You can hear it in these songs, we’re excited again. I think we’ve really stepped it up on this record.”
Continuing with tracks like the remarkably powerful and deeply personal alt-rock anthem “Tell Me (P.A.C.)” and the thought-provoking “Message to the World,” The Black Swan explores social and moral issues close to the band’s heart. With themes of war and prejudice, and taking lyrical inspiration from the likes of Carl Sagan among others, the group’s latest album finds the band in a refined state.
“Musically, we've grown so much. We have some very unique, timeless, face melting guitar riffs and solos that have come to define our sound, without compromising the idea of a classic song,” explains guitarist Ryan Phillips.
