Mutemath to tour in support of new album

Orleans’ rock innovators MUTEMATH have scored their first-ever Top 20 album. Armistice, the band’s second album for Teleprompt/Warner Bros. Records has debuted at No. 18 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart this week, selling 18,473 units. It is also currently the No. 3 Overall Digital and Alternative album, the No. 4 Rock album, and the No. 10 Top Internet album in the country.

Armistice’s Top 20 debut is a major leap forward from MUTEMATH’S 2006 self-titled debut. No doubt, the band’s devoted fans turning out in force to purchase the album propelled Armistice to its current chart positions. The album will likely get another boost when MUTEMATH perform their new single, “Backfire,” on The Late Show With David Letterman on Thursday, August 27th.

MUTEMATH begin their Fall 2009 “Armistice” Tour next month, which criss-crosses North America before finishing up with four headlining shows in Japan in November. All upcoming tour dates are below. Visit http://www.mutemath.com/ for more news and details.

Angel and the Mambokats featured on "So You Think You Can Dance?"

As a performer, recording artist, dancer and choreographer for more than twenty years, Angel Ferreira has grown up in the music business. He’s performed with everyone from Madonna to Vanessa Williams. After a strong career as a dance artist, Angel adopted a new style and became a bandleader, fronting the Afro-Cuban soul band Angel and the Mambokats. He’s recently seen one of the tracks from his self-produced and released album Horizontal Mambo break huge—on TV.

Twenty millions of viewers heard the track “Black Mambo” as the dance number for Benji and Heidi on Season Two of So You Think You Can Dance? Then, millions more saw Olympic gold medalist Misty Mae Traynor and Maksim dance to “Black Mambo” on Dancing with the Stars.

Next week, millions of viewers will see and hear Black Mambo again on So You Think You Can Dance: Top Dances Special The show airs Wednesday, September 2nd on Fox at 8:00PM Pacific/7:00PM Central Time (check local listings for precise air times) and the song has breathed new life into Angel Ferreira’s career.

I’m delighted these dance programs and artists have embraced Angel and the Mambokats,” Angel says. “The music of the Mambokats is sexy, sultry and tribal with an unmistakably Latin flavor, so it’s only natural people would want to dance to it. I’m just grateful the likes Benji and Misty Mae have chosen to dance to it. It’s really propelled downloads of my music.”

Trained in dance and music, Angel Ferreira developed a potent, appealing mix of street and slick growing up in Los Angeles. For Angel, early skate culture with an Aerosmith and Ted Nugent soundtrack thrived along study with the Cleveland Ballet, and he won a scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet in New York before being cast as an extra on the film BEAT STREET in 1984.

He danced his way from the Cat Club in Manhattan to a featured dancing gig on Madonna’s “Who’s That Girl?” world tour. From there, he started recording music, making music videos, Coke commercials and stints with Daisy Fuentes, Paula Abdul, Color Me Bad, Coolio, and more. Oh, and he also recorded and released “Angel,” an album of dance/pop songs, the singles “Wet Jam” and “Your Love Just Ain’t Right”. These records spun off several videos.

Today, the musical hybrid of afro-Cuban, soul, jazz and hip hop Angel calls Afro-Cuban Soul defines both his heritage and his music—reaching all the way back to the Tito Puente and Celia Cruz records his parents played at home. As times changed, so did his sound—into something that became a musical culmination of his personal life.

The album Horizontal Mambo features nourishing songs of lost and found love in L.A.'s well-heeled districts. The track “Black Mambo” is a fast mambo that describes Angel’s quest for infinite love and was first captured in the essence of dance by America’s favorite male and female dance contestants of 2007, Benji and Heidi. Fans and pundits agree this was one of the top ten dances ever on SYTYCD. Earlier this year, Angel went to China where he helped choreograph Wu Ling Da Wei, a Chinese version of American Idol that is the country’s most popular show. 50 million people saw that performance. “Now THAT’s a lot of people,” Angel quips."

Angel’s polishing his latest effort, an EP called Mambophonic. It features three tracks: two news songs, “Friday Night Rhvthm,” that was also used in another episode of So You Think You Can Dance; and “Do You Wanna Mambo?” as well as a cover of the famous Haircut 100 hit, “Favorite Shirts (AKA Boy Meets Girl).” “People need music in their lives!.....It’s part of the rhythm of life!” Angel concludes. “Do you wanna mambo?”

Angel and the Mambokats’ Horizontal Mambo is available on iTunes or from www.myspace.com/angelandthemambokats.

Fans can purchase the full-length CD from www.angelandthemambokats.com.

Donovan Leitch to present new rock musical Monday in L.A.

ACTOR/MUSICIAN/WRITER DONOVAN LEITCH
UNVEILS NEW ROCK MUSICAL
“THE DARK ROOT OF THE DREAM”

AT LARGO AT THE CORONET
MONDAY, AUGUST 31

8:00 PM - $20
Largo at the Coronet
366 N. La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90018
310-855-0350

Glam rock, literature and theatre collide when creator Donovan Leitch’s song cycle, The Dark Root of the Dream, returns to Largo at the Coronet Monday, August 31, a follow-up to its opening performance in June. The music, which was originally debuted on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, will be available for purchase on CD.

The music, written by Leitch and guitarist Larry Cordola (Giuffria, House of Lords, Magdalian), features an unlikely meeting of the minds that has inspired its own genre – “Gypsy Glam.” Utilizing the musical backing of the Fishtank Ensemble, described as a “cross-pollinated group of gypsy musicians,” Leitch found a new spin on his music, culled from the influence of David Bowie and T Rex’s Marc Bolan. The result is an enigmatic blend of 70s swagger and dark European folk whispers, reminiscent of a more sensitive Gogol Bordello.

The songs center around the character Mr. E, the fictional son of poet Virginia Woolf. After his mother commits suicide early in the boy’s life, E is raised by gypsies, going on to become an egotistical, disillusioned rock star. Subsequently, Mr. E struggles to fill the void left by his mother’s death – with drugs, music and love. Once all these fail, he is forced to confront his darkest dreams in order to survive. The show, which features a set with a “Beggar’s Banquest-style vibe,” according to Leitch, is directed by Ken Roht, creator of the 99¢ Only Show, and produced by Leitch himself.

In writing the songs, Leitch drew from real-life experiences with his legendary father, 60s folk singer Donovan, and his own career: “My parents split up when I was three, and I lost contact with my father, who, like Woolf, was an influential thinker of his time. I projected that loss onto a rock star character – I’ve found that the most egotistical musicians are often secretly the most self-conscious and sensitive people around.”

Leitch was originally inspired to create Dark Root after starring as the title character in Hedwig and the Angry Itch in hit productions Off-Broadway and at legendary Los Angeles venue The Roxy. “I realized that, as much as I loved Hedwig, I needed my own vehicle to fully express what I envisioned for a rock musical,” he says. Influnced by his own dark dreams, which Leitch has been analyzing himself for years, the writer also took cues from Herman Mellville’s Moby Dick and Dante’s Inferno, and the work of Oscar Wilde, whose words are quoted in the musical number “Harlot’s House.”

The songs had their first airing in a full-scale musical production at its June debut, but Leitch is using this upcoming date as an opportunity to let the music speak for itself. “I always wanted the music to stand on its own,” says Leitch. “So, for now, we’re splitting the play in two, so we can play out regularly, and not have the band tucked away in the corner – they’re phenomenal musicians.” Leitch envisions the event as being the unique combination of a band with a theatrical element, much like the Tupelo Show or Ivan Kane’s Forty Deuce.

Fans of Bowie, Hedwig and Dante alike will be dazzled at the insight, compelling drama and spectacle of Donovan Leitch’s song cycle The Dark Root of the Dream.

9PM: SAMANTHA STOLLENWERCK (www.samanthamusic.com)
'Cali-soul' is the term Samantha uses to describe her sound; a unique blend of soulful pop rock that has landed her on bills with the likes of Dave Matthews Band and Ziggy Marley. She recently finished a record with producer, Sheryl Crow’s Producer Jeff Trott and collaborated with songwriter Danielle Brisebois who was a co-writter on Natasha Bedingfield's hit singles, "Unwritten" and "Pocket Full of Sunshine". Samantha rounded out the record by bringing aboard Grammy award winning mixer, Manny Marroquin (Alicia Keyes, Usher, Kanye West) to bump up the grooves. Samantha is looking forward to playing her new songs live this summer as well as for her 2009 release of her new record and single, "Carefree".

10PM: STEREOFOX (www.stereofoxband.com)
Stereofox is a new band based in the NoHo arts district of Los Angeles, emerging onto the music scene with its seductive new sound. Drawing influence from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Jamiroquai; Stereofox brings back the old soulful vibes of roots, Motown, jazz and blues; fusing them all into their unique pop/melodic style. In February 2009, the group finished it’s debut CD Ice The Symphony. Produced by renowned keyboardist Deron Johnson (Miles Davis, Seal, Alanis Morissette), and featuring drum guru Gary Novak (Chick Corea, Allan Holdsworth, Robben Ford) on several tracks, the CD beautifully captures the Stereofox sound, complete with lush harmonies and layered guitars. Released independently, and packaged with entirely recycled materials (the group has asked fans to donate used CD jewel cases), Symphony is available on iTunes, Amazon, and CDbaby.com.

11PM: PETER GOETZ (www.outsideobserver.com)
Peter Goetz (Getz) lures in colorful crowds on nearly every continent. His tunes combine a soulful California beach-laden style with a dose of raw emotion and lyrical grit, echoing the solitude and depth of a lone troubadour. The singer, who has visited more than 50 countries as a traveler and filmmaker, fuses his passion for storytelling and songwriting to uplift listeners of all cultures. Exposed to a potpourri of the world’s cultures, Goetz gained fluency in Spanish and Portuguese, broadened his songwriting skills, and found his voice serenading international crowds around campfires. He used his wide range of skills to direct a bilingual documentary feature film about Peruvian surfer Sofia Mulanovich, which won critical acclaim on the festival circuit, before releasing his first recorded music, an EP entitled “Outside Observer.” The single “I Got Love” benefited the most from his travels, as Goetz was able to team up with the The Che Che Group, a Nairobi based A Cappella octet, to create an African version of the song while on a humanitarian mission for HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere).

MIDNIGHT: ROB MICHAELS (www.myspace.com/robmichaels)
Rob Michaels’ popular, alternative-rock sound and energetic stage presence has led him to perform and write for many amazing artists including Toto, John Waite, Steve Lukather, Carlos Santana, The Goo Goo Dolls and Chris Daughtry. Obscene Magazine (April 2009) wrote: “Rob’s music is a unique style of rock and roll that is beyond compare. The passion in his lyrics, singing, and amazing guitar rifts draws the listener in, having them beg for more.”

The Sway Machinery offers free concert in L.A.for Jewish New Year

JDub Records, home to Matisyahu, Balkan Beat Box and Michael Showalter, is excited to present a multimedia celebration of the Jewish New Year with a Jewish indie rock band The Sway Machinery. The event will take place at the historic Wilshire Blvd. Temple at 9PM on September, 17th 2009. Admission is FREE, and there will be an OPEN BAR reception in the courtyard of the temple before the show at 8PM.

This event is a singular opportunity to experience the Jewish New Year in a completely new way—one that abandons the staid, old-fashioned approach of traditional Judaism and revives Rosh Hashanah traditions with avant-garde performance art and music. This spectacle is undoubtably perfect for a cultural venue such as MOCA or The Getty Museum; however, the band decided to using a space with worship implicit in its design.

The Sway Machinery's lineup features a vibrant array of musicians for the Los Angeles event; led by vocalist and guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood of Balkan Beat Box, along with John Bollinger on drums, noted tenor sax player Matt Bauder and touring member of The Arcade Fire and frequent Tom Waits collaborator Colin Stetson on bass saxophone.

The performance will also feature a screening of Guggenheim Fellow Shawn Atkins' animated short film depicting the dawn of monotheism, The Akeidah.

And now, The Cocks are comin' to your town so grab some protection! RevCo is on tour throughout the US. “RevCo started with 3 core members which included myself, Luc Van Acker, and Richard 23 from Front 242. There were three of us, and now in true RevCo style the ever revolving cast of RevCo includes some fresh new young blood whom I think capture the true essence and spirit of being 'a Revolting Cock,' if you will.”

And as evidenced by SEX-O OLYMPIC-O, the three lads that Jourgensen has chosen to be part of the RevCo line up include singer Josh Bradford, guitarist Sin Quirin, and keyboardist / electronic specialist Clayton Worbeck – all of whom are certainly qualified for their newly appointed promotions. They will be joined by musicians Aaron Rossi (Ministry, Prong, John5) on drums and Murv Douglas on bass (Opus Dai Weapons X Powerman 5000). And as in tyrpical RevCo style we can expect a selection of Industrial and Punk Rock Icons to join the circus for special last-minute appearances as it travels throughout North America.

Orchestrating and instigating the madness is the legendary master of the unceremonious Jim Rose with his caravan of amazing things you can't “unsee,” and official Ringmaster of each evening’s performances.

Recently fully recovered from serious injuries to both his head and neck from which he suffered during this summer’s Jim Rose Circus vs. Jake The Snake Roberts Tour, Jim had this to say: “These might very well be the most shocking and theatrical events I’ve ever been on and that’s just RevCo. I’ve also got more than old track marks up my sleeve for this sojourn and I cant wait to show the world!”

So, gather up yourselves and your tattooed crazies, circus freaks, strippers, perverts and deviant friends who are looking for a good time, with some ear lashing tunes, and rejoice! Cummin’ to your town soon are your favorite ambassadors of sleaze, and they’ve put together an entourage of sick-os and set out to take North America by storm.

Launching the tour from Jourgensen’s hometown of El Paso, TX, The Revolting Cocks embark upon a full-frontal-assault of the US and Canada with a fresh crop of “cocks and pussies” as part of their ever-changing live lineup. RevCo is out to prove once more that they are the top of the heap and/or man pile when it comes to good-old-down-home-dark-side-oversexed-fun!

Appropriately enough, RevCo has invited Blownload as their Special Guest, as well as the likes of Canadian cyberpunks, Left Spine Down, to kick off the event. And in support of the tour, and release of Sex-O Olympic-O, the RevCo family is introducing your ears to its cousin release, the appropriately titled Sex-O MiXXX-O, a 10-track remix package featuring a star studded cast of remixers on board. This dark delightful treat has been touched by the hands of Marilyn Manson’s and Tweaker talent, Chris Vrenna, Skinny Puppy’s Dave “Rave” Olgilvie, Gravity Kills’ Doug Firley, Combichrist’s Andy LaPlegua as well as Revolting Cock and 13th Planet’s very own Clayton Worbeck. This is set for release on September 29, 2009 through Al Jourgensen’s 13th Planet Records/ Megaforce.

So get your full-body condoms ready, grab your hog-bitch girlfriend and/or boyfriend, and get ready to pull the ripcord on the wildest, hottest, sexiest, spooge-fest of the year. Let the LuBriCaTouR begin!

Brief History/Discography:
Since their formation in 1983, Jouregensen has been the only constant member of the popular underground industrial-dance band - along the way, issuing such classic releases as 1985's BIG SEXY LAND, 1990's BEERS, STEERS, AND QUEERS, and 1993's LINGER FICKEN' GOOD, among others. After a hiatus of nearly a decade, the group - which is also known as RevCo - rose from the ashes in the early 21st century, issuing such albums as 2006's star-studded COCKED & LOADED (which included appearances by members of ZZ Top, Cheap Trick, the Butthole Surfers, and Jello Biafra), and most recently 2008's SEX-O OLYMPIC-O. But like all great franchises, there comes a time when the chairman must infuse it with new blood, and that's what Jourgensen is doing with current releases, SEX-O OLYMPIC-O and it’s remix cousin Sex-O MiXXX-O,

With Jourgensen having recently completed Ministry's final world tour, the longtime bandleader has been focusing on producing (Prong, Ascension of The Watchers, a Ministry live album, Bradford and Clayton's band, Stayte, False Icons (Ministry/Killing Joke keyboardist John Bechdel's project), etc.) and running his record label, 13th Planet Records.

"Well, I've run a label before - I did Wax Trax! in the '80s, so it's not like I'm jumping into this completely naive."

And now, The Cocks are comin' to your town so grab some protection! RevCo is on tour throughout the US!!! Advance tickets, VIP tickets and special Uncle Al VIP tickets are available NOW for most shows!

GUEST SPEAKER:

ALTHEIA AUSTIN
Alethia Austin started her journey in music by writing about and reviewing unknown indie bands that played tiny venues all over Los Angeles. Hundreds of shows and many, many late nights later she joined the crew of A&R Select as an intern when the company was merely one month old. Hard work, long hours and a roaring passion for discovering bands and working with creatives helped her to become a lead player at A&R Select. After two years as VP of Operations, she decided to follow her attraction of music and film and left A&R Select to become a music supervisor. 10 films later, she am working independently on movies and tv shows, as well as consulting for 35Sound (www.35sound.com)

TOPIC:
The Breakdown of Music Placement in Film /TV for the artist
Alethia is currently seeking songs for placement in television and film projects. Bring your best!
ABOUT CONTACTING OUR GUEST SPEAKERS IN ADVANCE OR AFTER THE WORKSHOP
Our guest speakers give their time for free to come speak to you. They all lead busy lives and are not all available to receive unsolicited correspondence or communication. It is recommended to NOT contact the speaker in advance, nor after the workshop, unless they personally want you to. That is, come to our workshop, and if during the workshop they take an interest in creating a relationship with you, then, and only then, should you further communicate. It is bad practice to assume that since a speaker has been our guest, and that you met them through Songsalive!, that they are an open door for you to contact. Please use your best and courteous judgement in making contact. Thank so much for your understanding.

Los Angeles punk rock outfit ORANGE — frontman and bassist Joe Dexter, drummer Zak Glosserman, lead guitarist Brendan Minded and rhythm guitarist Perry Ladish — are gearing up for the September 15 CD release of PHOENIX (Hellcat Records) with several club dates and college appearances in the Los Angeles area. Look for the foursome to appear at USC on August 28, Ford Amphitheater on September 13 and Cal State Fullerton on September 23. Plus, they’ll host the PHOENIX record release party on September 19 at the Key Club on Sunset Blvd.

In the midst of these shows, ORANGE will break for two days, August 29 and 30, to film the video for their single “Standing Still.” Set to be directed by Blade Ladish, the setting of the piece will place the entire band in the setting of an average urban home focused on a young girl.

After the album’s release, the band will head to the northwest for a few all-ages shows with 5 Days Dirty, making stops in Seattle, northern California (Walnut Creek, Orland) and Oregon (Klamath Falls, Medford). At these shows, ORANGE will perform material from PHOENIX including their singles “Standing Still” (recently featured on KROQ’s weekly ‘Local’s Only’ show and as heard on SIRIUS radio Faction channel) and “Each Other” plus other songs from the album which find the quartet drawing on diverse influences and stretching themselves musically and lyrically, mixing genres and creating a unique sound.

About ORANGE:
Orange formed in 2002 and since then have crafted their own unique style of energetic and playful punk'n'roll. In 2004, when the band was the average age of 16, they caught the ear of Operation Ivy/Rancid mastermind Tim Armstrong, who signed them to his Hellcat label soon after. A year later they released their debut album Welcome To The World of ..., followed by Escape From L.A. in 2007, both of which were critically acclaimed and widely accepted within the punk rock community.
