On January 28, 2011, UNCF–the United Negro College Fund will host a Superviewing Party to preview the broadcast of UNCF An Evening of Stars® Tribute to Chaka Khan Presented by Target at The Conga Room located at 800 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90015. All proceeds will benefit UNCF’s mission of making sure that every child gets a good education from pre-school through college.
“Chaka Khan has consistently supported UNCF throughout her career, inspiring and empowering young people to pursue education,” said Curtis R. Silvers, Area Director. “We honor her for her contributions to the entertainment industry and for her dedication to helping minority students earn the college degrees they need and our nation needs them to have.”
UNCF An Evening of Stars® Tribute to Chaka Khan, the 32nd annual edition in the UNCF An Evening of Stars® series, will air on Saturday, January 29th, on KNBC Channel 4 from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM and will be shown on BET the following day, Sunday, January 30th at 10:00pm.
The program features stars from the worlds of music, TV and education paying tribute to UNCF Award of Excellence recipient Chaka Khan.
The stars on the UNCF An Evening of Stars® stage contributed not only their renditions of Khan's greatest hits, but also special appeals throughout the program for UNCF’s Campaign for Emergency Student Aid (CESA) to help UNCF students whose graduation is threatened by the lingering recession. Family layoffs, pay cuts and the disappearance of many private student loan programs have left students owing money for tuition, text books, and dormitory rooms—bills they must pay before they can graduate. From the stage and in specially videotaped appeals, the stars asked the studio audience and TV viewers to text "UNCF" to 50555 on their cell phones to donate $10 to help these students walk the last mile to their education.

Jarvis Cocker joins Discodeine for single and video
Brit pop legend Jarvis Cocker recently joined creative forces with two of the most exciting and innovative French producers -- Pentile and Pilooski, both collectively known as DISCODEINE -- to make the killer single and video for the infectious hit 'Synchronize' (available now on www.dfarecords.com and iTunes).
DISCODEINE is one of the most anticipated duos, the brainchild of two musical producers to haunt our collective conscious in recent years: Pilooski, an already well-known fixture amongst the Parisian music scene, best known for his “dirty edits” (a collaborative project between Pilooski and Dirty Sound System) series, also his collaborations and remixes for LCD soundsystem, Jarvis Cocker, Iggy pop, Brian Ferry, Nina Simone, and his most recent involvement in producing The Aikiu’s debut album (due early 2011) and Pentile, an equally respected musician/producer in his own right, and until now best known for his involvement with Octet and France Copeland.
Having discovered a mutual love for sci-fi movies, avant-garde electro and South Western French cuisine, the duo soon discovered they had an undeniable chemistry in the studio and quickly started churning out killer remixes for the likes of Metronomy, Whomadewho, Bot'ox, Photonz and Yelle. Earlier this year, the duo decided to write and record their debut album, consisting of only original material, written from scratch and including an honorable handful of yet-to-be-announced guest vocalists to be featured on some of the tracks coming next year.

Powerdove to release album
Be Mine, the debut album from the UK's powerdove, comes out February 15th from Circle Into Square Records!
Annie Lewandowski is powerdove. Though she frequently collaborates with other musicians, the resounding heart of powerdove will always be Lewandowski's sparse, haunting vocals and lilting parlor guitar. With influences ranging from Nico and Leonard Cohen to the drone sounds of Sunn O)), her music will warm the hearts of experimental folk fans.
Be Mine was recorded in the Mills College Concert Hall in Oakland on Valentine’s Day, 2009, by Deerhoof's John Dieterich, and the resulting twelve songs gracefully sway from ethereal, sun-dappled numbers to eerie, creaking ballads—all the while communicating Lewandowski's words like little beams of light.
These songs, originally written to be performed solo, have been transformed for this recording with the help of Alex Vittum and Jason Hoopes. From the original delicate arrangements for voice and parlor guitar, a trio was born. With his sublime sensitivity as an upright bass player, Jason brings depth and gravity. And with a vast array of magical percussive objects, Alex weaves an ethereal thread from song to song. The contributions of these musicians—Hoopes’s warm bass rumble in "Resting Place," Vittum's well-placed booms on the title track—are far more than simple “additions” to this music; they create worlds—soft, dazzling, and strange.
"Be Mine" could easily be a 60's girl-group love song stripped to its bare essence, plainly asking for the warmth of affection. Lewandowski’s gently picked guitar allows her breathy voice to shine on "Birdsong". Elsewhere, songs are gently accented with the spare sounds of glockenspiel, trombone and flute.
Currently based in Southampton England, powerdove will embark on a European tour in April with plans to return to the US over the summer. Be Mine drifts into the world via Circle Into Square Records on February 15.

Happy New Year to You!
The New Year is the time when we set our intentions for the year to come. Most people call them "resolutions," which I find far too staunch for such a magical time. I prefer to think in terms of sparkling New Year wishes. With people around the world celebrating and sending out positive thoughts and expectations, the New Year offers us a special window of opportunity to plant our desires and see them bear fruit in the coming year.
Take advatage of this magical opportunity by ritualizing your New Year intentions. I believe that thoughts are the seed of bringing your dreams into reality. To manifest what you desire, there are three steps:
1. Think it
2. Speak it
3. Write it down
This begins the process of bringing something into the material world. You can almost see the vibration becoming denser in this process: from the pure electrical vibration of thought, to the physical air vibration of sound, to the much, much denser vibration of ink on paper.
My wise and wonderful astrologer, Yolanda who runs the facebook page Astrology: Cycles & Symbols (and offers beautifully in-depth and uncannily right on personal readings) says the following regarding New Year magic:
"The Gregorian calendar (our current calendar) begins the new year at dark moon (a time of release and endings) in Sagittarius. I wouldn't recommend setting or declaring your goals for 2011 on the first day of the year. I would consider but not initiate them until after January 4, 2011 at 1:16 am PST."
So, do your New Year dreaming on January 1st and your wishing on January 4th - if you're a night owl, stay up late January 3rd or do your wishing first thing in the morning January 4th when you wake up. Think your dreams, speak them out loud, and then write them down on a piece of paper. To give them an extra burst of power, light a candle in a dish or holder and place that piece of paper under the dish. (and I have gorgeous intentional candles that are perfect for this, so contact me if you'd like to get one).

EASTWEST, the industry leader in virtual software instruments, announces QUANTUM LEAP Ministry Of Rock 2, a modern rock toolkit produced by Nick Phoenix, will be released January 11, 2011.
Ministry Of Rock 2 was put together with one goal in mind: to create a virtual (software) instrument capable of producing sounds that could actually produce a hit record or film score without any live drum, bass, or guitar overdubs. The articulations and programming were all reverse engineered from actual performances. The 57 gigabyte collection features LIVE technology which makes multi-sampled drums sound like a live performance.
"Rock music is always in a state of evolution," said Phoenix. "Ministry Of Rock 2 will give users the latest software tools to produce finished tracks. Ministry Of Rock 2 takes the Ministry Of Rock concept to a whole new level of playability and impact."
Recorded at the Legendary EASTWEST Studios in Hollywood, CA, by Phoenix, Doug Rogers, and Rhys Moody, Ministry Of Rock 2 features some of the industries top players like Shane Gibson, guitarist with Stork/Schwarzenator/KoRn, Greg Suran, guitarist with Goo Goo Dolls/Avril Lavigne/Glee, Doug Rappaport, guitartist with Edgar Winter/Potent, and Tal Bergman, drummer with Billy Idol, LL Cool J, Rod Stewart, Terence Trent Darby, Joe Zawinul.
The drums for Ministry Of Rock 2 were recorded in East West Studio 1 on three large rock kits from DW, Gretsch, and Ludwig, along with 6 additional snares. Top vintage and modern gear from Neve, Neumann, Telefunken, AKG, Manley, Fairchild, Royer, Chandler and Meitner were employed for a legendary sound. Repetition samples were recorded for everything as well as extreme dynamics and three mic positions for drums (close + room, or close + compressed room) to dial in the desired sound and an ultra-realistic performance. Any drum from any kit can be selected to create a custom kit, plus there are 6 additional snare drums to choose from.
Ministry Of Rock 2 guitars were recorded on Fender Jaguar, Fender Telecaster Thinline, Carvin 7 String, Baritone, Gibson Les Paul, and Schecter 7 String through Fender, Divided By Thirteen, Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Bogner and Vox Amps. Samples feature round robin, hammer on and pull off legato, sliding legato and dozens of other techniques. Dual channel recordings let you pick a wicked real amp sound or use the direct signal with popular plug-ins.
Ministry Of Rock 2 includes all of the remastered content from Hardcore Bass and Hardcore Bass XP plus an all-new 5 string Musicman Stingray bass with 7000 samples and true legato.
