Grammy award-winning, hip-hop trailblazers The Roots are offering their hometown fans in Philadelphia a day of music featuring some of the industry’s hottest acts. On June 7th, an eclectic group of artists will descend upon Festival Pier for the city’s most exciting concert lineup of the year. As curators of the event, The Roots sought a diverse roster from their circle of peers- artists they have known since their youth and past & present collaborators.
Joining The Roots are Gnarls Barkley, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Santogold, Deerhoof, J*Davey, Diplo, Esperanza and The Cool Kids. Gates open at noon, and the show starts at 2:00PM. In addition, don’t miss The Roots live on Comedy Central’s Night of Too Many Stars. Hosted by Jon Stewart, this star packed special will be televised LIVE from The Beacon Theatre in New York City on Sunday, April 13th at 8:00PM EST. The band then heads back to Philadelphia to appear on The Colbert Report on April 15th as he covers the Pennsylvania primaries. On April 28th, The Roots hit The Late Show with David Letterman to perform “Rising Up.”
The Roots will be touring non-stop this year including dates supporting Erykah Badu and a headline appearance at America’s largest Earth Day celebration- the Green Apple Festival 2008- at the National Mall in Washington, DC. The band will be joined by friends Chrisette Michelle, Will.i.am, Doug E. Fresh and Neyo. Additional festivals include All Points West, Summerfest and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The Roots are set to release their highly-anticipated 10th album- Rising Down- on April 29th via Def Jam Recordings. Known for their prolific lyrics and live instrumentation, the Legendary Philadelphia crew is composed of Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter (vocals), Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson (drums), Kamal Gray (keyboards), Frank Knuckles (percussion), Kirk “Captain Kirk” Douglas (guitar) and Owen Biddle (bass).
