When arson claimed the homes of over 40 families in his hometown of Coatesville, Pennsylvania from 2008 to 2009, the emotional trauma of the tragedy spurred Fred Mascherino (ex-Taking Back Sunday) to pick up his guitar and start penning music for his new all-star supergroup TERRIBLE THINGS, which includes Josh Eppard (Coheed & Cambria) and Andy Jackson (Hot Rod Circuit). Their self-titled major label debut will be released on August 31, 2010 via Universal Motown and was produced and mixed by Jason Elgin (Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster, Collective Soul) and mastered by Roger Lian (Bayside, Coheed & Cambria).
“The album cover is metaphoric to what was going on in my town last year and it was actually pretty emotional for me watching that house go up in flames,” Fred says of the image of his two children having a tea party while a nearby dollhouse is engulfed in flames.
Fortunately for Terrible Things, the only thing that will be on fire will be the band, as they blaze a trail this Summer for a handful of shows on the 2010 Vans Warped Tour and October dates supporting Mae (tour dates below).
Terrible Things is both a concept record as well as a fascinating and powerful rock debut.
“It was great working with Jason [Elgin, producer]," continues Fred. "He’s been making records for a long time and understood that this band couldn’t just be put through a recording factory. We made this record the old-fashioned way. It wasn’t about fixing the song in mixing. It was about playing it right from the very beginning.”
With songs like the propulsive "Revolution," the surging bittersweet ballad "Lullaby" to the soberingly soaring "Hills of Birmingham", the album is the sound of a band who's combined the best of their storied pasts and fine-tuned it into one big powerful debut.
"I think Andy and Josh would agree that this is the best record any of us have ever been a part of," he concludes.
Their demo for "Hills of Birmingham" has accumulated over 1.3 million plays on MySpace. "Revolution," the first single from Terrible Things, is currently available in digital format via iTunes and ShockHound. Terrible Things is Fred Mascherino (vocals, guitar), Andy Jackson (guitar, vocals) and Josh Eppard (drums, vocals).
