Hathaway-Sycamores offers children's art calendar

Whimsical birds, bugs, butterflies and other colorful creatures that call the atmosphere home come to life on the pages of the 2011 Hathaway-Sycamores Children’s Art Calendar. Created by area students who receive academic-enrichment and other support services from the Hathaway-Sycamores Highland Park Family Resource Center, this one-of-a-kind calendar is an ideal holiday gift.

Not only is the “Up in the Air” calendar both beautiful and affordable ($10, plus $5 shipping and handling), but proceeds will help fund life-changing services for the thousands of youngsters and families served annually by Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services, including those who utilize the Highland Park Family Resource Center.

This unique calendar came to be as part of an innovative, summer art program. Several youngsters—ranging in age from 6 to 17—spent afternoons at the Family Resource Center receiving art instruction from Master-in-Residence artist Mary Kay Wilson. Well known for her work with watercolors, Wilson’s award-winning paintings have been widely exhibited at both regional and national art shows. At the weekly sessions, students were taught an array of watercolor techniques along with basic-drawing concepts.

According to Wilson, who has led these sessions for the past three summers, the program is designed to not only introduce youngsters to the world of watercolors, but also to introduce them to a new, empowering avenue of self-expression.

"The paintings in this calendar clearly demonstrate that excellent results are possible with the right materials, along with a few basic tricks and techniques,” Wilson said. Adding, “It was my privilege to work with this group of talented and enthusiastic young artists.”
