“Another Circle of Fifths” is the first single from the upcoming Michael The Blind album “Are’s & Els”

Michael The Blind is Michael Levasseur, a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in Portland, Oregon. Think Leonard Cohen, but not so low. Elliott Smith, but not so high. Suzanne Vega, but not so female. John Fahey when acoustic, Paul Westerberg when electric. A lyrical style that is both e.e. cummings and Mother Goose.
Following up three solo albums and countless shows performed at bars, markets, coffeehouses, basements and festivals throughout the nation, the new Michael The Blind album Are’s & Els (recorded at San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone and featuring the Magik*Magik Orchestra and Levasseur’s newly formed band The Els) will be released by Alder Street Records on June 5th as a deluxe 180-gram vinyl LP, CD and digital download.
The album is preceded by the single “Another Circle of Fifths,” streaming now. “This song was one that we decided to re-record for Are’s & Els,” Levasseur says of the song, which in its previous incarnation on one of Michael The Blind’s self-released solo CDs was simply called “Circle of Fifths”.
In re-working the song, Levasseur worked with Minna Choi and her ensemble the Magik*Magik Orchestra to add a string section to the tune. “The original had a fuzzed out guitar part in place of the strings that are there now,” says Levasseur.
Levasseur covers a lot of serious ground in this seemingly upbeat song which, among other things, alludes to his efforts to quit smoking, his contemplation of toiling in obscurity and his inability to live in one place for very long.
Levasseur couples these obsessions with allusions to Mother Goose and somehow it all makes sense. “I started making fairy tale references with the first song on my first record,” he reminds us. Levasseur’s unique way of seeing the world can be heard in full when Alder Street Records releases Are’s & Els on June 5th.
