Jim "Kimo" West is best known on the mainland as long-time guitarist for the world's most successful musical comedy artist,
"Weird Al" Yankovic but in Hawaii, he is known as one of the few masters of the guitar style known as "ki ho'alu".

His accolades as Weird Al's guitarist are many-three Grammy's, many gold and platinum records, countless TV appearances including the Tonight Show, Late shows with Jimmy Fallon and Craig Ferguson, and many tours over the years. As a slack key artist he has won the Hawaii Music Award, the LA Treasures Award and just received his second Na Hoku Hanohano nomination, which is the "Grammy" of Hawaiian music.

This enchanting and eclectic guitar style began in 1840's Hawaii, when guitars were first introduced by Spanish vaqueros who were imported to each the Hawaiians how to manage their ever increasing herds of cattle, originally a gift from explorer George Vancouver to King Kamehameha I. Recently featured in the Oscar-winning film, "The Descendants" , slack key guitar has come from being a family tradition to a music that is now performed around the country.

Kimo has shared the stage with most of the leading players of slack key including Ledward Kaapana, Cyril Pahinui, George Kahumoku, Keola Beamer, Makana and Jeff Peterson. He performs regularly at Hawaii's legendary slack key festivals, the Masters of Slack Key series in Napili, Maui as well as the Southern California Slack Key Festival held every January in Redondo Beach.

Kimo's many slack key CD's feature his compelling mix of original compositions and new arrangements of classic Hawaiian songs. Joining Kimo will be some very special guests and hula dancers as well. For those wishing to learn the basics of slack key guitar, Kimo will also be holding a workshop at the Fret House from 3-5 PM. Fee for the workshop only is $20
