The Craftsman Movement
The Craftsman Movement (also known as the American Arts & Crafts Movement) emerged in the early 20th century in the U.S. as an outgrowth of the English Arts and Crafts Movement. Its hallmark is a philosophy of honest, simple design expressed in hand-made creations by skilled craftsmen. While the Movement bloomed through the U.S., Pasadena became a particularly strong center for Craftsman design including architecture, art, and ceramics. International recognition of Craftsman-era expression in Pasadena has been accorded to the work of architects Charles and Henry Greene, tile maker Ernest Batchelder, artists Elmer and Marion Wachtel, and writer/photographer Helen Lukens Gaut, among others.
History of Pasadena Heritage
Pasadena Heritage, a nonprofit organization dedicated to historic preservation in and around Pasadena, California, celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. The organization advocates on behalf of historic resources, educates the public about local history and the benefits of preservation, and demonstrates quality restoration through its own preservation projects. Its 2,000-plus members are drawn from Pasadena extending throughout Southern California.
American Indian Arts Marketplace at the Autry Nov. 3-4
“Indian art has changed dramatically over the past decade, and the Autry’s Marketplace provides an opportunity to see what is currently happening in Indian Country,” said Shelby Tisdale, the Autry’s Vice President of Curatorial and Exhibitions and former director of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “There is something for everyone—from the beautiful baskets, pottery, textiles, and jewelry that continue to be made using the techniques and materials passed down through the generations to some of the most innovative and contemporary works.”
The American Indian Arts Marketplace covers more than 25,000 feet of exhibition space and features top Native American artists from across the country selling pottery, jewelry, sculptures, paintings, mixed-media works, weavings, beadwork, woodcarvings, and other cultural items.
Activities for families will include performances by Native dancers, musicians, and storytellers, plus hands-on activities for children and artist demonstrations. Native American food will be available as well as a varied menu in the Autry Cafe.
Inside the museum, visitors can view past winners of the Marketplace’s Jackie Autry Purchase Award, which is given to one work of art each year. Through the generous financial support of Mrs. Gene Autry, the Autry is able to purchase one piece from a participating artist—chosen by the Southwest Museum’s curator—to be placed in the Autry’s permanent collection. The newest addition to this category is the 2011 winner, Ken Humpherville (MetÃs/Tsimshian), for his Eagle Bentwood Box.
The Marketplace weekend will feature the exhibition Katsina in Hopi Life, which shares the meaning and purpose of Hopi spiritual messengers. The Katsina dolls in the exhibition are drawn from the Southwest Museum of the American Indian Collection, considered one of the nation’s finest Katsina collections of its kind.
In addition, the Sundance Institute will host screenings of Native short films from the Sundance Film Festival. The Chumash Maritime Association will display a traditional plank canoe, or tomol, on the Marketplace grounds, and Lakota artist Rex “Wambli Sapa” Carolin will display a Lakota tipi.

This Indian Country: American Indian Activists and the Place They Made
1:00 p.m.
Frederick E. Hoxie, celebrated historian of Native American history, will talk about his new book This Indian Country: American Indian Activists and the Place They Made, a story of political activism with victories hard-won in courts and campaigns rather than on the battlefield. For more than two hundred years, Indian activists—some famous, many unknown beyond their own communities—have sought to bridge the distance between Indigenous cultures and the republican democracy of the United States through legal and political debate. Hoxie weaves a powerful narrative that connects the individual to the tribe, the tribe to the nation, and the nation to broader historical processes.

Offbeat bus tour reveals the sexy, strange and sometimes bloody history of
Downtown L.A.

double-feature bus and walking tour
WHEN: Saturday, September 22, 12pm-4pm
COST: $58/person
WHERE: Departs from The Daily Dose, 1820 Industrial Street, Los Angeles, CA
90021. Tour covers downtown LA's historic core

From the founding of the city through the 1940s, Downtown was
the true center of Los Angeles, a lively, densely populated, exciting and
sometimes dangerous place. After many quiet decades, Downtown is making an
incredible return. But while many of the historic buildings remain, their
stories have been lost.
That's why Esotouric, the eclectic bus adventure company whose tours reveal
the secret history of L.A. through crime, culture, literature and
architecture, is offering HOTEL HORRORS AND MAIN STREET VICE, a tour meant
to bring alive the old ghosts and memories that cling to the streets and
structures of the historic core.
The HOTEL HORRORS section of the tour is steeped in true crime and oddities,
featuring some of the wildest, weirdest, goriest and most memorable
happenings in historic hotels like the Alexandria, Hayward, Barclay, King
Edward and Cecil. Join the tour and you'll step inside several of these
legendary locales, and find out where Night Stalker Richard Ramirez slept,
which hotel saw a visit from the Skid Row Slasher, where two traveling
chocolate salesmen laughed so hard they fell backwards out a window to their
deaths. You'll also explore the fiery curse that repeatedly leveled the St.
George Hotel, and hear some light hearted stories to help the blood and gore
go down.
The MAIN STREET VICE section is a social history lesson celebrating the
ribald, racy, raunchy old promenade where the better people simply did not
travel, but kicks were had by all who did. Burlesque babes and dirty picture
parlors, mummified western outlaws and old time tattoo parlors, wax museums
and pawn brokers, "professors" offering sex lectures and magazine peddlers
with nudie Marilyn Monroe calendars under the counter, sophisticated steak
houses and nickel donut dives -- these were the pleasures and the people to
be found along Main during the first half of the 20th century, a street that
every Angeleno knew offered more (yet less) of what could be seen anywhere
else. We'll visit the scenes of some more unforgettable debaucheries and
share stories of crime, smut, passion and commerce.
Climb aboard for a time travel journey back to the downtown that's not there
anymore, and the surprising number of gems that survive.
And if you're looking for offbeat L.A. history but can't wait to ride the
Esotouric bus, there's plenty of good stuff online. In addition to this and
other historic Los Angeles bus tours, Esotouric's team created the
1947project "time travel blog" series of alternate history websites,
including In SRO Land ("lost lore of the historic core" at
www.insroland.org), On Bunker Hill (www.onbunkerhill.org) and the original
1947project ("a crime a day" from 1947, 1927 and 1907 atwww.1947project.com
and 1947project.blogspot.com).
