Mindless Self Indulgence readies new album
After a hugely successful summer, headlining the second stage on Projekt Revolution alongside Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Placebo, etc. (as well as a sold-out European Fall tour with My Chemical Romance), MSI have been hard at work (play?) on their follow-up to their last album You'll Rebel to Anything, which spawned two Billboard chart-topping dance singles "Shut Me Up" and "Straight to Video". MSI's DVD Our Pain, Your Gain debuted at #5 on Billboard's Top Music Video chart. Not bad for a band who refuses to conform, eh? Their new album If comes out on April 29, 2008 on UCR/The End Records. Susan Cowsill to perform at the Coffee Gallery Backstage
Susan Cowsill will be performing at a specially added venue at The Coffee Gallery Backstage on January 17, 2008 at 8 PM. This performance was added to follow the Florence Henderson Show with the Cowsills. The duet performance, "Susan Cowsill and Russ Broussard," features Cowsill’s husband on the drums.
Susan Cowsill knows what it means to be a survivor, and her contribution to her solo album Just Believe It won critical praise from titans of the music industry as what may well become the anthem of the floods that devastated her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana in the autumn of 2005. Cowsill suffered devastating personal losses as well. Cowsill’s brother, Barry, a member of the Cowsills sixties pop band, drowned on the levee near Audubon Park—a victim of the floods and his own personal challenges. Cowsill lost her home and instruments, but vowed to stay on in the city that had become "home."
Besides an uncanny knack for getting to the heart and soul of songwriting, Cowsill’s voice has been praised for her throaty, seasoned vocals. The Washington Post has called Susan Cowsill’s voice an "impressive instrument, hitting the notes-between-the-notes, the subtle tones that are so emotionally complex."
On the first Saturday of every month Susan and her local New Orleans band perform an original set at Carrollton Station, followed by a Covered In Vinyl set, featuring the performance of an entire album from start to finish. Portions of the proceeds from the performances are donated to the Carrollton Foundation, which aids New Orleans’ musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The Backstage is a listening room with a fine sound system, good lights, and comfortable seating. The room "location" is a coffee bean warehouse somewhere in Central America. You are comfortably stranded while your cruise ship rides out a storm at the mouth of the river.
Reservations are strongly suggested. Seating is limited. The policy of The Coffee Gallery Backstage is to present "broadcast television clean" entertainment suitable for everyone. This is to assure that the material will be of the highest quality and will come from "thinking it through" instead of going for the cheap laugh. All ages welcomed.

Heading due East out of downtown for points rarely seen, the tour explores several historic communities that reflect the growth and eccentricity that are hallmarks of 20th century Los Angeles.
Crime Bus passengers will be treated to detailed descriptions of some of the most notorious, strange and fascinating forgotten tales from the past hundred years, each told at the scene of the crime. They'll thrill to the freakish case of the Man from Mars Bandit who stalked area supermarkets for months in 1951 before meeting his match in a police sharpshooter, shock to discover the deadly infighting among El Monte's American Nazi Party members, mourn the Case of the Buried Bride dragged beneath her home on her wedding day by her secret lover, gnash teeth at the weird lion farm (home to every MGM lion) that served lion meat barbecues on special occasions, and visit scenes of notorious cases including Phil Spector's spooky hilltop castle, James Ellroy's murder victim mother Geneva (the true-life inspiration for his Black Dahlia novel), neglected Manson victim Steve Parent and even an obscure East LA link to the JFK assassination.
And since no visit to the San Gabriel Valley is complete without a delicious Chinese meal, the Crime Bus will stop at 101 Noodle Express (one of Jonathan Gold's picks for 99 L.A. restaurants not to be missed) to pick up a dumpling feast, which will be enjoyed picnic-style at Monster Park, a remarkable sea-themed folk art environment recently saved from demolition. There passengers can enjoy their snack in the mouth of a concrete whale, or undera grinning octopus, then pose for photos with the creatures.
All this, plus stunning mid-century trailer parks, subterranean Black Panther hideouts, wild shootouts, dope-dealing druggists, missing Salvador Dali paintings, the original "little girl down a well" television sensation, and a very strange story about ducks.

Dogs Deserve Better seeks help
As Valentine's Day approaches, non-profit Dogs Deserve Better is asking for help from dog lovers and others in an unusual direct mail outreach which pairs Valentines created by schoolchildren with America's chained dogs.
Dogs Deserve Better, a national rescue and advocacy group dedicated to ending thesuffering endured by perpetually chained dogs, annually sends Valentines and coupons for dog treats to chained canines across the country. The group includes a brochure for the dogs' caretakers, explaining why the antiquated practice of chaining dogs for their lives is a form of abuse. The materials encourage people to bring their dogs into the homeand family or to find better homes for the animals.
By the end of January, the group is seeking to have 10,000 addresses for perpetually chained dogs. The group also needs volunteers to make the Valentines and requests donations of coupons for dog treats or dog food.
"Winter is a critical time to reach out directly to the people who chain their dogs, and what better excuse than Valentine's Day to send these forgotten animals a little love," says Tammy Grimes, ffounder and director of the five-year-old non-profit. "Every winter our rescuers see dogs that have frozen in the snow, suffered frostbite, or otherwise endured horrific living conditions because of the longstanding misperception that it is appropriate to chain a dog outside in any kind of weather.
"This is the perfect opportunity for people who pass chained dogs every day, or who live next door to these poor animals, but feel powerless to make a difference," continues Grimes. "People can anonymously provide us with the addresses of these dogs, or perhaps make a batch of Valentines, and we do the rest."
Dogs Deserve Better sees success stories every year from its grassroots direct mail campaign.
"Of course, we get angry calls from people who are mired in habit or tradition and don't see anything wrong with chaining a dog for 10 or 15 years. However, on the flip side, we always learn of situations where the recipients of our Valentines finally think about the suffering they are causing and either bring the dog inside or find the dog a better home."
The creation of the Valentines is an ideal project for schools, scouting troops, and other similar organizations.
"Children have a natural affinity for animals and they enjoy making art projects," says Grimes, an artist herself.
Although the practice of 24/7 chaining is pervasive in many parts of the country, especially in rural areas, states and cities have, in recent years, started to pass laws against the practice. California passed a law in 2006 and Texas followed suit in 2007. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and
South Carolina are among the states currently considering laws that would put reasonable limits on how long a dog may be chained outdoors.
Hundreds of cities have passed, or are considering, similar legislation. Meanwhile, countless "backyard dogs" are spending yet another winter in the cold. Often, they shiver day and night in leaky, uninsulated doghouses, suffer from thirst because their water is frozen, and pace neurotically from lack of exercise and attention. Perpetually chained dogs can become aggressive or insane from their constant confinement, often posing a danger to people. Dogs Deserve Better provides a variety of services to people who agree to take their dogs off their chains, including providing free assistance with socialization, housetraining, and fencing.

The Houstons' debut is out
It may be a day late, but it is certainly not a dollar short. The Houstons' debut LP, STILL was released on CD yesterday, January 1st, 2000 and eight on MoRisen Records! Now, before you go putting on your jet pack to fly through space to pick up your very own copy, here's a little background info.
Like the perfect pair of thrift store jeans, The Houstons may be new to you, but they're not new. They were originally known as the NC duo, The Houston Brothers (AKA Justin and Matt Faircloth). With a bevy of releases spanning 8 years, the Brothers began hitting some rough patches, due in no small part to their total immersion in music. Taking a year-plus hiatus to get things back on track, the brothers Faircloth came back in 2007 with an updated nom de plume, a new CD on the horizon, and an additional 3 members adding even more adornment to an already lush soundscape. The result is STILL, the most ambitious and mesmerizing Houston-branded album to date. Recorded primarily in Justin's home studio, STILL is a warm and intimate album coming to terms with the trials and tribulations of a life lived too fast.

Conveniens re-releases Clear album
Re-Release of CLEAR album on CD [Enhanced]
The CLEAR album by CONVENIENS was originally released in 1987. Pressed on clear virgin vinyl using the DMM process [Direct Metal Mastering], the package also included a clear jacket with silver imprint through-out. During the original promotional campaign, copies of CLEAR constantly disappeared from DJ booths, radio stations and press offices, inhibiting exposure.
Clearly a most collectible release, also the third and last of COnVENIENS' vinyl LP trilogy. NOW/, the re-release of CLEAR on enhanced CD [add. crit. on disc] reveals CONVENIENS. As a radio station music director once put it, "In a word, this is hardcorenewagejazz."

BAll PArk Song - Snap krackle pop, you're at the ballgame vendors organ hotdog.
Electroflux - Extended, persistent, drums, synth, add an electric razor, percussion, grunts, voices, screams in an electrified goth mode [there are some precious moments].
CAdium Red -A relief piece to the lighter side, flute with piano. Rolling - Trad. opening with strong 2/4 beat, drums, piano, synth, add the sax, they take it down then go into hyperdrive with a de-crescendo finish.
Epilogue [bonus track not on original vinyl LP release] -A studio jam urged by lain Burgess after working on Rolling, done in one take [sax, piano, bass, drums].

The CLEAR album by CONVENIENS was originally released in 1987. Pressed on clear virgin vinyl using the DMM process [Direct Metal Mastering], the package also included a clear jacket with silver imprint through-out. During the original promotional campaign, copies of CLEAR constantly disappeared from DJ booths, radio stations and press offices, inhibiting exposure.
Clearly a most collectible release, also the third and last of COnVENIENS' vinyl LP trilogy. NOW/, the re-release of CLEAR on enhanced CD [add. crit. on disc] reveals CONVENIENS. As a radio station music director once put it, "In a word, this is hardcorenewagejazz."
CONVENIENS is still John MAz [drums] and DAvid Sterling Smith [keyboards]. CLEAR brings forth the addition of session players: Tom JonusAitis [from noted Chicago punk band Bonemen of Barumba] - accordion, bass, vocals Ted Blood BuchAnAn [from the Buchanan Brothers Trio, and appearances on Chicago's WGN Bozo's Circus] - tenor sax The late GerrAld Hill [Saucer Plane] - flute Lori PAyne [Girl Friend] - cabassa, banshee vocal Also, recording engineer lAin Burgess and graphic artist J-MAx Kennedy are apex.
