BMI releases mobile music market revenue projections
Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), the world’s leading music performing rights organization, today released its annual mobile music market revenue projections for 2009 and finalized its earlier figures for 2008. BMI licenses the public performing right in the U.S. for the musical works of its more than 375,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers.
BMI projects that ringback tones will surpass $235 million in U.S. retail sales during calendar year 2009, up 15% from BMI’s 2008 market estimate of $205 million and 68% from BMI’s 2007 estimate of $140 million. A ringback tone is a musical work that is performed to the caller when they place a call to a participating mobile subscriber. BMI estimates that more than 10 million U.S. subscribers are signed up for ringback-tone services with their wireless carriers. Ringback-tone services have an industry-wide average penetration rate of approximately 4%. Subscriber penetration by carrier for ringback tones ranges from less than 2% to a high of 9%.
BMI’s study is based on comprehensive sales and use data it collects as part of its licensing agreements with its mobile music clients; this data reflects more than 215 million of the current 270 million-plus United States mobile subscribers.
“We predict that ringback tones will hit a new high in 2009,” said Richard Conlon, Vice President, New Media & Strategic Development, BMI. “Mobile phones are a multi-format device and have become a distribution outlet for entertainment content for the consumer. The relationship with the mobile phone has transcended voice communication and the increase usage in music and audio-visual offerings illustrates that. Ringback tones’ revenues are growing as more subscribers sign up for and increase the number of tones in their libraries. It is a music use area that we see a continuing growth rate for.”
Ringback tones are sold by all major carriers and retail at prices between $1.99 and $2.50 per tone with the vast majority of tones selling at $1.99. The fee allows the subscriber to use the tone for anywhere from 90 days to 12 months. With only one exception, all major carriers require a monthly recurring subscription fee to the service, which is required before a subscriber can purchase a tone. The monthly recurring charge ranges from $.99 to $5.00. Carriers representing more than 75% of U.S. wireless subscribers offer the monthly subscription services at $.99 or less.
BMI tracks titles and revenues associated with the U.S. use of ringback tone services, streaming audio, and streaming audio visual services. The company’s database of U.S. earnings and titles is believed to be the most comprehensive in the industry. BMI uses the data that it collects to distribute public performance royalties from the U.S. on a pro-rated basis to its affiliated songwriters, composers and music publishers and other music rights agencies around the world.
BMI is an American performing right organization that represents more than 375,000 songwriters, composers and publishers in all genres of music. With a repertoire of more than 6.5 million musical works from around the world, the company operates on a non-profit-making basis, collecting license fees from businesses that use music, which it then distributes as royalties to the musical creators and copyright owners it represents.

Left Alone's latest out April 7
Los Angeles street-punk crew Left Alone will release their new self-titled album on April 7, via Hellcat Records. Combining three-chord punk rock with ska and just a dash of country to create a unique sound all their own, Left Alone has used their DIY ethos to move up the ranks from backyard band to Hellcat Records staple on their sophomore album.
After being welcomed into the Hellcat family in 2005, the group released their debut full-length, the ska-punk classic "Lonely Starts and Broken Hearts", then followed it up with their diverse sophomore LP "Dead American Radio". For the group's third album they set their sights on a more cohesively dynamic sound.
"This record is very different from from any others we have made from the song writing, the subject matter and even how it was put together and recorded," says singer/guitarist Elvis Cortez. "We lived in the studio from when we started pre production to the final day of mixing and that helped in many ways. With no distractions I got to concentrate more on songs from start to finish, adding different parts and taking some away to help the songs."
Fans of Left Alone's distinct ska sound need not fear, the band hasn't forgotten their old signature and features it on the made-for-skanking romp "Sad Story," dealing with true life events living within the confines of gang-infested Wilmington, while "3 Bottles of Wine" represents the new dynamic of the group and the album, with an addictive sing along chorus, still in the tradition of the band's previous fan favorites but on a new, higher level.
Radically changing the personal tones of the album is the politically charged "Bombs Away", dealing with the rampant destabilization of Western civilization. The song is a stark departure for Cortez lyrically, and deals with subject matter usually non-existent for Left Alone.
After a brief upcoming romp in Japan, fans can catch Left Alone live at their at their CD Release Party on April 4 at Knitting Factory in Los Angeles as well as on tour this spring.
Left Alone S/T Tracklisting:
1. Spiked With Pain
2. Branded

Ministry's new album is here, band survives despite problems
While MINISTRY's studio albums certainly show why the group is considered a stylistic trailblazer, it is on the concert stage that Ministry takes things to a whole other level. And as evidenced by fans that packed venues to catch the group one final time on their worldwide "C U LaTouR 2008," the Al Jourgensen-led band was slaying crowds up 'til the final note. For those unenlightened souls who don't take our word on this, feast your eyes and ears on the new double-disc DVD set, Adios...Puta Madres, to be released on May 26 in North America, on May 22 in Europe, and accompanies the audio release of the same title, out tomorrow, March 31, 2009, on Jourgensen's own 13th Planet Records.
The double DVD disc Adios...Puta Madres is distinguished by secondary titles: the Adios...Puta Madres/En Vivo? disc contains 15 live performance tracks, and Adios...Puta Madres/Fuchi Requiem is a 45-minute on-the-road "rockumentary" that follows the band from rehearsals all the way to their final shows in Europe. Backstage bits, interviews, and live footage abound, while the DVD contains some extra tracks not on the live CD.
While there were no arrests on Ministry's final jaunt (unlike previous tours), it was certainly not a tour for the squeamish - especially if you were a band member. "Highlights" included guitarist Tommy Victor falling down stairs in Calgary, and breaking two ribs and puncturing his lung, Al enduring a vicious seagull attack outside a Swedish hotel (the seagull stole his sandwich and devoured it mid-air), and the group's bus breaking down at 6:00am on a French highway, resulting in a multi-police vehicle escort to a safe haven (the nearest gas station). But according to Jourgensen, he got to experience an unforgettable moment each and every night.
"This whole tour, all I really gave a fuck about was 'the balloon drop' at the end of the night. I was like a little five-year-old kid, like 'Hey, when do the birthday cake and clowns come out?' I LOVED that part of the show!"
Perhaps another deciding factor in what made these last Ministry shows so special was that the band members were like peas in a pod together.
"Ministry during the '90s - everyone hated each other. After the shows, everyone would scatter and go to different hotels, different this and that. Even on the bus, some people weren't allowed to go to the front section, some people couldn't go to the back section. The only time we'd ever talk, I'd hand out the setlist five minutes before the set, and that was it - then we'd scatter. But this last line-up was just like a band of pirates going down the road."
For Ministry's 2006 "MasterBaTouR," Prong's Tommy Victor and Killing Joke bassist Paul Raven joined Jourgensen in support of the Rio Grande Blood release, which they also helped to pen.
Al explains, "We were all set to do that same line-up, outside of Joey Jordison who had prior commitments with Slipknot, so we borrowed AAron Rossi from Prong. But then Raven, our bass player, died. We were desperate, and instead of having auditions, we were just like, 'Let's call up Tony [Campos]!' It was fortunate that the Static-X schedule wasn't going to conflict with the final Ministry tour. And then of course, John Bechdel had been with us for a couple of tours, and Sin [Quirin] was with us for the last Revolting Cocks tour and album, and also wrote The Last Sucker with me."
The result is a set that is sure to be an audio/video treat for fans, as nothing but state-of-the-art equipment was utilized during its recording. The group traveled with two high-end Digitech boards - one for on-stage monitors and one for the front of house. For the front of house rig, a 56-channel ProTools rig was added, so the entire show could be recorded in 56 channels and put into hard drives. That way, Al could mix it in the studio after the tour, which is precisely what he did...after all the smoke and tinnitus had cleared.
With Ministry now laid to rest, Jourgensen refuses to sit idle, as he already has his foreseeable future booked solid with studio work.
"Even though the new RevCo just hit stores, we're almost done with the next RevCo album. We're trying to get it done before the guys go on tour in September to support Sex-O-Olympic-O on the 'LuBricaTouR' - we plan on being done with that album in August. Then I'm producing the new Prong album for September/October. After that, I'm doing a Lard project with Jello Biafra - we're resurrecting that - in November/December. And then in January/February, I'm doing a project with Joey Jordison called J vs. J. I'm booked for the next year, basically."
And finally, how does Jourgensen compare the CD and DVD versions of Adios...Puta Madres to previous Ministry discs? "Since I've lived it, I never listened to it. So it's got to be up to you guys to decide that."
Big Fresh to release album April 21
The glow on the horizon grows brighter until... the UFO is outside your window. Bending circuits, plastic travelers wave from within. If they are singing, invite them into your room. Big Fresh comes from beyond, bearing bright gifts on Garden Gate Records, the newly launched label by Robert Schneider of The Apples in stereo.
Lexington, Kentucky's beloved pop superheroes have been hard at work in the laboratory since Yes, Nice, Please, Thanks (2001, Aquapop Records) electrified the regional college radio airwaves. Their U.S. tour last year opening for The Apples in stereo broadcast their pop manifesto to head-bopping masses, disseminating a 150-copy limited pressing of their newly completed album.
Who are they? Artists, filmmakers, electronic experimentalists. Two compose screenplays. One composes songs that sound like science fiction. One grew up steeped in psychedelia, his father and home-recording legend R. Stevie Moore creating magic in their band Goods and other groups. But that is water. What is ice is that they have produced a very cool record, B.F.F.(Big Fresh Forever): crystalline pop rainbows beamed through a prism.
B.F.F.(Big Fresh Forever) is an ambitious tapestry of danceable hits, bubbling soundscapes, electric light harmonies and synthetic orchestrations: alternately gorgeous and playful. Produced by Big Fresh in their home environment and mastered by Robert Schneider (The Apples in stereo, Elephant 6), this shining album will transport you to another world.
For the purpose of concluding our propaganda with informative content, we interviewed the group in a controlled environment, and transcribed their terse responses below:
New Album: “We've been working on it for the past seven years. We have lots of recordings that didn't make the cut. We felt it was important to release something short and tight.”
History: “We've been a band for 10 years. Our first band name was Meat Tape.”
Other Projects: “John plays in The Apples in stereo. Ben and John both play in Ulysses with Robert Schneider. Danny and John play in Deek Hoi. Jeremy plays in Joybombs. Dave is in Club Dub.”
