Volunteers sought to plant trees in Pasadena Sept. 29

Volunteers are needed to help Pasadena City Council member Gene Masuda and the City’s Department of Public Works plant more than 75 trees on Saturday, September 29 as part of Pasadena’s collaborative effort to restore the City’s “Urban Forest” that was heavily damaged in the 2011 Windstorm.

To kick off this year’s fall tree-planting season, the City is working on Sept. 29 with volunteers and the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation, Odwalla’s Plant-a-Tree Program, and the Pasadena Community Foundation to plant trees in areas west of Eaton Canyon Wash.

Volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. at Eaton Sunnyslope Park, 3005 E. Orange Grove Blvd. A tree-planting demonstration by City arborists is planned for 8:15 a.m. Volunteers will begin tree plantings at about 8:30 a.m., supervised by City staff. The Pasadena Firefighters Local 809 will provide a volunteer lunch.

From Nov. 30 to Dec. 1, 2011, severe winds damaged 5,550 trees along Pasadena’s streets and in public parks. Of those 5,550 trees, 2,100 trees were significantly damaged and required removal. The rest sustained less severe damage to branches or limbs.

Since the windstorm, the City has been working collaboratively with the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation, Odwalla’s Plant-a-Tree Program, and the Pasadena Community Foundation to help raise money and initiate tree plantings.

Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes or boots and comfortable clothes that can get dirty. An adult must accompany all children 14 years old, or younger. Don’t forget to bring gardening gloves and a favorite shovel if available!

Interested volunteers should call the Department of Public Works, Division of Parks and Natural Resources, at (626) 744-4321 or by email to Darya Barar, Program Coordinator, at dbarar@cityofpasadena.net. Or, go online to www.cityofpasadena.net/PublicWorks.

Gyptian selected for 'Cover the World'

This week MTV Iggy announced that Gyptian, who is gearing up for his upcoming six-song SLR EP, was chosen for "Cover the World." This is a partnership with Chevrolet in which four global musical artists (Gyptian along with South Korea's WonderGirls, Australia's Angus Stone, and America's All Time Low) will each cover an iconic song chosen by fans online. Each artist will bring their own regional flavor to the recording to celebrate the arrival of the 2013 Chevrolet Spark in the United States and Canada.

Fans will vote at www.covertheworld.com for the "Cover the World" artists to reinvent one of the following songs: "Don't Know Why" by Norah Jones, "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper, "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar, "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive, "Son of a Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield and "Take On Me" by A-Ha. The voters will earn a chance to win a custom-wrapped Chevy Spark, as well as a VIP trip for two to see one of the featured acts perform live. Fans can also create, upload and share their own cover version for a chance to win this new sporty four-passenger, five-door hatch.

MTV Iggy and Chevrolet will announce the song selected by fans on Monday, September 17th.

The following month (Oct 16), Gyptian returns with his SLR EP, while he preps for his 2013 full-length studio album Sex, Love & Reggae on VP Records. The digital-only EP follows Gyptian’s critically acclaimed Billboard Top 200 album Hold You and its title-track smash produced by Ricky Blaze - which sold over 500,000 digital downloads, led to a stellar remix with Nicki Minaj and dominated rhythmic radio in 2010 (chosen as NYC's HOT 97 FM #2 Song of The Year). SLR is a spicy yet sweet mix of love songs featuring Gyptian’s freshest hits (“My Number One,” “Overtime,” “One More Night,” “All Over” and “Wine Slow”) as well as the never-before-heard track “My Royal Love.” Check out his latest video “My Number One,” directed by William Richards, is powerful rendition of late Gregory Isaacs' song: http://withlovepr.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=e56cb023f7aa1f0618b4c1c24&id=0eefc2723c&e=b0fdec9d47

Music Center seeks SoCal students for Spotlight Program

The Music Center invites Southern California high school students in the performing and visual arts to apply to The Music Center’s Spotlight Program. For 25 years, Spotlight has played an integral role in shaping the future of Southern California’s bright young artists. The program is one of the nation’s premier arts education and scholarship programs for teens, providing arts training by professional artists and awarding over $100,000 in scholarships.

“As we begin our 25th year, we are proud to have served more than 25,000 students through the Spotlight program,” said Mark Slavkin, Music Center Vice President for Education. “We love to see how students learn and grow through the program, whether or not they end up pursuing a career in the arts.” The Music Center Spotlight Program has launched many professional careers, including pop music sensation Adam Lambert, American Ballet Theatre’s Misty Copeland, Broadway’s Erin Mackey and classical musician Liang Wang, principal oboist with the New York Philharmonic. Many alumni return to the program and participate as judges and class instructors, eager to give to Spotlight what they received when they were students.

The Music Center’s Spotlight Program is free and open to all students who attend high school in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Spotlight is a highly regarded yet accessible program that invites students of all talent levels to apply, and there are no fees to participate. Every student who applies to Spotlight will have the opportunity to learn through professional feedback and gain valuable knowledge to improve their art and audition skills.

Spotlight was developed to offer distinctive learning opportunities to Southern California students at every stage of artistic development. On September 30, The Music Center will host the Spotlight Academy, a free day of workshops inviting students to talk to professionals and university faculty about the program and audition processes in a casual atmosphere. High school students at all levels of prior training are welcome to attend, whether or not they plan to audition in the Spotlight program. According to Jeri Gale, Director of the The Music Center’s Spotlight Program, “Spotlight provides high school students an opportunity to stretch themselves by learning about audition skills, exploring artistry and developing self-confidence; all in a safe and nurturing environment. It’s free, it’s easy and most importantly, it’s fun!”

Applications for Spotlight and information about the Spotlight Academy are now available online at musiccenter.org/spotlight. Performing Arts applications must be received by October 17, 2012, and Visual Arts applications are due by December 1, 2012. Performing Arts categories are ballet, non-classical dance, classical voice, non-classical voice, classical instrumental, and jazz instrumental. Visual Arts categories are photography and two-dimensional art. Students who are selected by professional judges to advance as semifinalists participate in master classes, compete to perform at The Music Center or exhibit their artwork in a professional art gallery, and receive cash scholarships totaling $100,000. First Grand Prize Finalists in each category receive $5,000 scholarships and runners-up, $4,000. Honorable Mentions receive $250 scholarships and semifinalists receive $100 scholarships.

Digital Radio launches Country Star competition

Digital Rodeo, country music’s one-stop shop and Eventful, Inc., the leading digital service connecting consumers with entertainment and local events, launched Digital Rodeo’s Country Star competition. Unsigned music artists can opt-in for free through
http://eventful.com/digitalrodeo
and compete via Eventful’s unique “Demand it!®” service. Music artists, empowered with social media tools, can encourage their fans to vote for them.

Digital Rodeo and Eventful are providing a glimpse of how technology and social communities can create a powerful, new promotional platform for new music artists while enabling them to develop an intimate connection with their fans. Music fans can vote for their favorite unsigned artist or band to become the next Country Star and win:

· Studio time to record three singles at 16 Ton Studio located on Nashville’s famous Music Row.

· A customized website including a merchandise store by Music City Networks and Merchmo.

· Country Music Association (CMA) prize package:

o VIP trip for two to the 2012 Country Music Awards airing live in Nashville, Tenn. on Nov.1 (includes airfare, five night hotel stay and two tickets to the awards show and Christmas Special).

o CMA Prize Package of assorted merchandise and materials.

The Top 25 artists with the most “Demands” will move to the semifinals where they will be narrowed down to the top five by music industry experts:

· Cory Chapman, Director of Marketing, Country Music Association

· Jason Deere, Singer, Songwriter, Producer

· Jeff Walker, President, Aristo Media

· John Pyne, Director of Marketing and Promotion, Digital Rodeo

· Lang Scott, President, Music City Interactive, Singer, Instrumentalist, Producer

· Robert Reynolds, Grammy Winner, Founding Member of the Mavericks

Fans will then vote on the final winner from the Top five chosen finalists. Music artists should encourage their fans to spread the word virally across Facebook and Twitter throughout the process and invite friends to “Demand” their favorite artist or group as well. Eventful and Digital Rodeo will announce the Country Star winner on Oct. 3.

"From its inception Digital Rodeo has strived to provide independent country artists a platform to promote their music to a very filtered group of country music fans,” said John Pyne, Director of Marketing and Promotion for Digital Rodeo. “We are excited to be working with Eventful on this contest; their experience and outreach for these types of promotions are second to none. We hope that, with this contest, even more country artists will come to trust and turn to Digital Rodeo as a valued partner in their musical journey. We can't wait to discover, along with the fans, the talent that is out there waiting to be heard."

“We’re excited to work with Digital Rodeo to discover which unsigned artist has what it takes to bask in the CMA experience and record three singles with 16 Ton Studio,” said Eventful CEO Jordan Glazier. “There is no better way to introduce great new talent to the world than to bring fans into the process and allow them to decide who will experience the next level of success.”

Volunteers sought by HeadCount to register voters at concerts

What’s more American than rock n’ roll and democracy? Well, a few lucky young people are getting a healthy dose of both this summer, taking “The Great American Road Trip” to register voters at Dave Matthews Band, Wilco, Phish and Furthur concerts across the country.

Their trek, organized by the nonpartisan voter registration organization HeadCount, will collectively cover over 15,000 miles and 103 concerts, and help tens of thousands of people register to vote.

A separate team of 2-4 volunteers is assigned to each band, traveling to nearly every concert on the respective tours. In each city, they’ll be joined by up to 10 local volunteers who will help register voters and then get to enjoy an evening of music. Anyone 18 years of age or older can sign up to volunteer at www.HeadCount.org In all, over 1,000 people will participate in this nationwide voter registration campaign.

The HeadCount team is traveling to each Dave Matthews Band show in a Volkswagen Routan minivan – and filing dispatches from the road on the HeadCount blog (www.HeadCount.org/blog ). Volkswagen of America, Inc. and Dave Matthews Band’s Bama Works Fund are covering all the volunteers’ travel costs.

HeadCount set an all-time record for a single concert tour when they registered 12,161 voters with Dave Matthews Band in 2004. That year, turnout by voters age 18 to 24 jumped 11 percent. It was by far the largest increase among any age group. In 2008 that trend continued, with young voters being the only age group to show an increase in turnout.

However, it will take some work if that trend is to continue. A recent Wall Street Journal poll found that only 43 percent of young voters said they were very interested in the Presidential election, compared to 65 percent in a poll taken at the same time of year in 2008. Another poll by Gallup said that only 56 percent of registered voters under the age of 30 plan to cast their ballot in November.

One of the best ways to increase voter turnout is by welcoming new voters into the democratic process. In 2008, over 72 percent of the voters registered by HeadCount turned out to vote, according to an independent study by the Washington, D.C.-based New Organizing Institute. That same study said that over 4 million votes were cast that year by individuals who registered to vote through independent groups like HeadCount.

In addition to registering voters, HeadCount works with musicians to help make the election more culturally relevant. Furthur’s Bob Weir – a member of HeadCount’s board of directors and a founding member of The Grateful Dead – recently performed a free webcast on Yahoo! Music that included a roundtable political discussion between sets of music. He was joined by members of the Brooklyn, NY-based band The National, another artist that has encouraged its fans to be politically active.

Social media also represents a burgeoning opportunity to engage young people around voting and issues that are important to them. HeadCount just launched a specialized Facebook “app” that allows any user to complete a voter registration application online (https://apps.facebook.com/registertovote/ ).

Entries sought for PROSE Awards

The Professional and Scholarly Publishing (PSP) Division of the Association of American Publishers (AAP) today announced the call for entries for this year’s American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Awards. Now in their 37th year, the awards recognize books, journals and electronic products that contribute to professional and scholarly publishing, while also maintaining the highest editorial and design standards.

“This year’s PROSE Awards should be the most exciting yet,” said PROSE Awards Chairman John A. Jenkins of CQ Press. “By expanding the award categories, we anticipate an increase in submissions—and competition—for what has become the industry’s most prestigious recognition of scholarly publishing achievement.”

Book submission categories for this year’s PROSE Awards include: humanities, reference works, mathematics, social sciences, physical science, as well as biological and life sciences. E-products and electronic platforms with multiple components, meanwhile, can compete for best in humanities, best in multi-discipline platform, best in physical sciences and mathematics, best in biological and life sciences, and best in social sciences. Journals may be entered in print or electronic formats.

Five “best of” awards will be chosen from the winners of the books, e-products and journal categories. Only one PROSE prize winner, however, will take home the prestigious R.R. Hawkins Award, which recognizes scholarly works in all disciplines of the humanities and sciences.

“Winning the R.R. Hawkins Award was a tremendous honor for McGraw-Hill because it underscores the value of engineering and the sciences—the importance these technical fields and their applications contribute to our everyday lives,” said Michael Penn, Senior Editor, McGraw-Hill Professional, publisher of The Diffusion Handbook: Applied Solutions for Engineers and winner of the 2011 R.R. Hawkins Award. “After winning the award, we saw a significant boost in sales in wholesale, library, and special sales channels—the PROSE Awards helped to elevate visibility of the science and engineering category within the world of scholarly publishing.”

Books, journals and e-products submitted for this year’s PROSE Awards must be published by a member company of PSP, AAP, or the Association of American University Presses (AAUP). All book entries are required to have a 2012 copyright date, and new journal entries must be published a minimum of two times after 2010. E-product entries must have been launched or changed significantly in 2012. Winners will be announced at the PROSE Awards Luncheon at the PSP Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. on February 7, 2013 and be broadcast via live webcast.
