Aaron Tippin connecting with truckers and helping launch contest

In the world of country music, trains and trucks rule. And when it comes to trucks, the man whose music mines the seam between trucks and country is none other than the hardest working man in country music and former trucker, Aaron Tippin. And now he's announcing a contest that marries the old form of communication with the new, Cobra Coast-to-Coast With Aaron Tippin.

This country legend has recorded a blistering album, IN OVERDRIVE, of his favorite trucking songs on the NIPPIT Records/Country Crossing Records label and it is lighting up sales in truck stops across the country.

Rolling down the road with his band and crew in the Aaron Tippin tour bus reminding American truckers that they are not forgotten, Tippin comments, "wow, I had no way of knowing how much fun this was going to be when I decided to re-record some of the greatest truck drivin' songs of all time. Man, we had a great time in the studio and I thought that was pretty cool but this album just keeps getting' bigger and more fun."

Now, inspired by an unbelievable live concert where he wowed a throng of over 8,000 truckers at Freedom Hall Arena in Louisville, KY, Tippin has been motivated by real truck drivers to do something that hasn't been done in over 40 years. He's going to recreate the pony express of the trucking world by sending a message cross country just to show that it can still be done.

There have been a lot of important messages sent out by the CB radio long before there were cell phones or easy-access Internet communications. Truckers finding out their wives had given birth, stories of engagements by CB, life saving stories of CB heroes and miraculous stories of bravery and kinship among the brotherhood of truckers, almost too numerous to list. And some to fantastic to believe, yet such is the legend of the CB radio among professional truckers.

Tippin talked and visited with hundreds of fellow truckers at the MATS show in Louisville, KY, where he helped announce the winner of Arrow's Back On The RoadTM 2009 and played to the masses at Freedom Hall. After the show he created this concept of a contest designed to try to relive those great old memories when the CB was king. We want to prove the old CB can still send a message just as fast as ever. He's now organized an event to show the world that the truckin' pipeline is alive and well.

About the Contest: And now, Tippin has joined forces for this landmark contest with Cobra, Barjan, and Petro to pass the word across the country that Aaron Tippin is saluting America's 14 million plus workforce of trucking professionals whose daily sweat and energy keeps our country moving. And that's what this contest is all about. Moving some thanks, appreciation, good will and good news, brother trucker-to-brother trucker. "My partners at Cobra, Barjan and Petro have just knocked me out. This couldn't happen without their expertise and encouragement," Tippin exclaims.

Guidelines: On Friday, April 17th at 7:30 PM CST at the Petro truck stop in Kingston Springs, TN, Aaron Tippin will launch the Cobra Coast to Coast Contest with Aaron Tippin, sponsored by Cobra, Petro and Barjan. He'll send out a secret code to all truckers going east to west and west to east to see how long it takes to send the message [that free CB's and Aaron Tippin gift bags are to be won], the old fashioned way from coast to coast. That code will be announced the night of the launch by Tippin at 9:30 PM CST.

He will be manning his Cobra CB radio at the Kingston Springs Petro and will announce that two lucky truckers will win special Cobra Radios and "Aaron Tippin" prize packages at select Petro truck stops on both the east and west coast. He will announce a secret pass code on his Cobra from Tennessee and see how long it takes the lucky truckers to pass the code word on to the East and West coast Petro truck stops to claim the Grand Prizes. These winning Petro locations are (East Coast) Mebane, NC and (West Coast) Wheeler Ridge, CA.

The first trucker to arrive at each truck stop and announce the "secret pass code" to management will receive the prize package which will include a Cobra CB Radio, a Cobra bluetooth wireless headset, and a special Aaron Tippin gift bag that includes, CD, concert backstage passes, tee shirts, ball caps and more.

"This is going to be a ton of fun for all of the guys and gals truckin' across the country," says Tippin. "Plus, a trucker on each end of I-40 will be an instant winner as soon as they walk into the winning Petro location in California and North Carolina. Along with those winners, any driver that relays the message will have the chance to win the same prizes in an online contest on www.aarontippin.com by going to the site and registering and logging in the secret code word. If you are hauling cross-country, don't miss your chance to win and have a great time while you're at it.

Catch Miranda Lee Richards in L.A. before she heads to Europe

Coming off a whirlwind of shows at SXSW in Austin, Texas, MIRANDA LEE RICHARDS has announced a European and U.K. headlining tour launching May 2 in Germany and wrapping with a pair of shows in London (May 18 and 20). Before heading overseas, the singer/songwriter/musician MIRANDA has confirmed a special Los Angeles performance Thursday, April 2 at Largo at the Coronet Theater supporting Tift Merritt.

Having recently released her new album LIGHT OF X (Nettwerk) to critical acclaim, MIRANDA was a featured performer on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” program in Los Angeles.

MIRANDA and her band--KIRK HELLIE (bass), RICK PARKER (guitars) and KEVIN STEVENS (drums) as well as BEN PEELER (pedal steel guitar) and JEN KUHN (cello)--performed such songs as “Life Boat,” “Early November” and “Savorin’ Your Smile.”

To listen the full performance on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” with host Jason Bentley (89.9 FM Los Angeles), visit:
http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/mb/mb090312miranda_lee_richards

In addition, check out MIRANDA’s exclusive acoustic solo performance at KCRW up now:

In other news, MIRANDA has been selected to be the face for Nine West’s Vintage America Collection for Fall 2009. The vintage inspired line will feature shoes, handbags and jewelry. MIRANDA’s campaign will appear exclusively in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Just before fashion week in New York, MIRANDA LEE RICHARDS and her full band will perform live at the Nine West Vintage America Collection launch party on September 9.

MIRANDA continues to receive strong praise for her music. In his review for Rolling Stone, writer Will Hermes noted that LIGHT OF X “evokes her Cali dream-pop heroes Mazzy Star, although Richards' music is airier and poppier--think of it as freak folk with just a schmear of freak. ‘Life Boat’ is a big, warm hug with dub effects, pedal steel and hash-den tambourine; ‘Mirror at the End’ sports a chorus big enough for Sheryl Crow. Delivered in a pure, unblemished voice, even the sad songs are comforting…”

Bob Mould to look back on tour

On April 7th, one of the most important figures in the American rock underground, Bob Mould, will celebrate the release of his evocative new record Life And Times by saluting the 20th anniversary of the album which first established him as a preeminent solo artist. For Mould's DC area show at the Birchmere Music Hall, he has gathered acoustic combo of long time collaborators Jason Narducy (bass, guitar), Amy Domingues (cello), and Richard Morel (keyboards) in order to interpret songs from his seminal 1989 offering Workbook as well as the brand new Life and Times.

Bob Mould: "I remember the DC show in May 1989 promoting Workbook. Twenty years later it will be great fun to return to the DC area with those songs in hand and a new interpretation in mind. Many of the songs on Life And Times are a nod to that era. I am planning a special night of music and the Birchmere is the ideal room for this rendition. April 7 will be another day for me to remember: a one-of-a-kind show on the release day of Life and Times for the hometown crowd."

ASCAP to honor Wyclef Jean and Santigold

ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) will honor Wyclef Jean and Santigold at its 26th Annual Pop Music Awards, it was announced today by President and Chairman Marilyn Bergman. Wyclef will be presented with ASCAP's Creative Voice Award and Santigold will receive ASCAP's Vanguard Award. These special awards are in addition to the previously announced ASCAP Founders Award presentation to Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart. The songwriters and publishers of ASCAP’s most performed pop songs of 2008 will also be honored at the invitation-only event, set for April 22, 2009 at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, CA.

Wyclef and Ann & Nancy Wilson will perform at the awards ceremony.

The ASCAP Creative Voice Award is bestowed upon an ASCAP member or group whose significant career achievements are equally informed by their creative spirit and by their contributions to the role that a creator can play in their community. Metallica and Green Day received this honor in 2004 and 2006, respectively.

"Wyclef is one of this generation's most musically innovative and passionate artists," said Marilyn Bergman. "He is not only a hero to millions of music fans around the world, but to the millions of people he helps through his Yéle Haiti Foundation. The ASCAP Creative Voice Award is an honor he richly deserves."

The ASCAP Vanguard Award is given in recognition of the impact of musical genres that help shape the future of American music. Previous honorees include The All-American Rejects, The Arcade Fire, Sara Bareilles, Beck, Modest Mouse, the Strokes, Built to Spill, the Mars Volta, Joseph Arthur and Jack Johnson.

"Santi is an extremely talented artist," added Ms. Bergman. "Her knowledge of the industry coupled with her skills as a songwriter and performer makes her a force to be reckoned with. We are delighted to honor her with ASCAP's Vanguard Award."

The 26th Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards is part of "ASCAP I Create Music Week" -- an entire week of events being held in Los Angeles to celebrate the voice of the music creator.

Wyclef Jean is a multiple Grammy-Award winning writer, musician, and producer who effortlessly crosses genres, generations and geographic boundaries with his music. He has racked up countless top 10 albums and singles for both his collaborative and solo works while his talents have led to a myriad of successful projects over the past two decades. With the Fugees, The Score became the #1 top-selling hip-hop album of all time. He wrote and produced Carlos Santana's Supernatural, winning the Grammy for Album of the Year and collaborated with Shakira on "Hips Don't Lie" earning him the #1 Top 40 airplay record of all time. Wyclef, who is also a dedicated humanitarian, founded Yéle Haiti in 2005 to provide aid and assistance to his native country of Haiti. His seventh solo LP, To Sir With Love will be released this fall.

With the eclectic influences of dub, punk and new wave, Downtown Music Publishing artist Santi White (aka Santigold) is stirring up some of the most modern pop music to date. Santigold's self-titled debut album, released in April 2008, exhibits a clear affinity for 80s sensibility and audiences were eager to welcome something recognizable yet somehow different. Catchy in its electronic fortitude, the single "Creator" was an immediate favorite and has already been tapped by the likes of Bud Light for its palatable commercial value. Another ear-grabbing track, "L.E.S. Artistes," features Santigold's melodic hooks and vocal urgency and the catchiest chorus the record contains.

Originally from Philadelphia, White began her career in the music business in New York as an A&R representative for Epic Records, but soon switched to more creative endeavors.

In addition to writing and producing a debut album for Res (How I Do), Santi has written for and collaborated with an array of artists, including Jay-Z, Lily Allen, Mark Ronson and Pharrell Williams.

Santigold is often compared to friend M.I.A. as the two artists are similarly admired for their innovative approach when sourcing various musical genres. Their similarity might also be due to the fact that they have worked with the same producers, Switch and Diplo. Unafraid to deviate, to mix and match established forms, Santigold has managed to create a familiar yet fresh style that has already showcased some of its future promise.

Soles4Souls to hold spring cleaning events to provide shoes for needy

Soles4Souls Inc., the international shoe charity, is working with Meryl Starr, the popular Organization and Motivation Expert, to challenge people during a nationwide Spring Cleaning program aimed at collecting shoes from American closets. Through May 31, 2009 Meryl and Soles4Souls will be sponsoring a series of events to help people reorganize, reuse and recycle the clutter in their lives. the program is specifically aimed at collecting the new and 'gently worn' footwear in our closets and will benefit people in need around the world.

"One of the most cluttered and disorganized areas in our homes is the closet," said Starr. "In my line of work I have seen it all, and unworn shoes make up an enormous part of the clutter. Soles4Souls provides fantastic ways to reorganize your life while offering a great service to people in need at the same time," she said.

"Meryl is a dynamic motivator with simple plan of action that produces results," said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. "By following her lead, we can recycle our shoes and put them on the feet of people who will treasure them for years to come rather than tossing them into our landfills to slowly disintegrate," he said.

Footwear makes up a significant portion of the refuse in our landfills, and Soles4Souls and Meryl are working hard to change the habits of Americans. "There is no reason you shouldn't donate your unwanted shoes to Soles4Souls through their network of participating retailers," said Starr. "In most cases, you can earn a discount on a new pair of shoes -- so you can feel great about donating five pairs while buying one new pair to replace them," she said.

Soles4Souls is currently partnering with thousands of footwear retailers across North America on a variety of shoe drive events, and a full list of events and partners can be found at www.giveshoes.org.

Soles4Souls estimates that 300 million pairs of shoes were thrown away last year, while the same number of children around the world have never owned a pair of shoes. "Shoes may be a simple thing to most people," said Elsey, "but when we put a new pair of shoes on a person’s feet we have seen reactions of pure joy that comes from the gift of shoes,” he said.

About Meryl Starr
Meryl is the best-selling author of "The Home Organizing Workbook" and "The Personal Organizing Workbook" and is known as one of the nation's top Organizers and Motivational Coaches. She won a 2008 Telly Award and is the creator of a new TV Show, “Let’s Make a Change with Meryl Starr.”

Meryl has appeared on many TV shows and in dozens of magazines, including Real Simple, Better Homes & Gardens, In Style and Women’s Day. Learn more about her work at www.merylstarr.com, and to learn more about her TV Show, visit http://www.merylstarr.com/indextv.htm.

About Soles4Souls
Nashville-based Soles4Souls™ facilitates the donations of both new and used shoes, which are used to aid the hurting worldwide. Soles4Souls has distributed more than 4.3 million pairs (currently donating one pair every 17 seconds) to people in over 125 countries, including Honduras, Uganda, Romania, and the United States. The charity has been featured recently in Runner's World and the Green Guide by National Geographic. It has also appeared on CNN, NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, and hundreds of regional outlets around North America. Chris Garneau readying new LP and tout

Chris Garneau To Release Sophomore LP El Radio
Out July 7th On Absolutely Kosher Records
Unveils Tracklisting Look Out For U.S. Summer Tour

It is easy to perceive Chris Garneau's new record El Radio as a dramatic seasonal change, an event horizon, perhaps a carnival or even a birthday. It's that way for the best of records: the ones that change from pieces of plastic and wax into something that penetrate the heart and the mind. There’s a twinkle in the eye of this young Brooklyn songwriter and more than a bit of magic in that vulnerable yet brave voice of his, floating above us all yet tethered by the silky strands of the songs themselves.

Chris’ debut album Music For Tourists (2007) was sad and sparse and gorgeous, drawing inspiration from Chris’ own life for its subject matter. The album found its audience like a migrating colony of butterflies and every week since the album’s release, thirty, fifty, hundreds of people have captured it or perhaps been captured by it.

When a record finds its audience in this way and those butterflies flutter brightly in all directions and you start seeing blog posts (outside the so-called sphere) and tweets and interview mentions that say, “one of my favorite singers, Chris Garneau,” well, it’s more satisfying and real and special. In the summer and autumn months that followed, Garneau and friends piled into a van with as many instruments as they could fit and traveled north to New Hampshire to begin creating El Radio.

Surrounded by the simplicity of lake and mountains, the intricate process of making an utterly organic record began. The result exceeds all expectations. A rich harmonium and a wave of strings opens the album in "The Leaving Song". Chris describes loss of life as standing in the desert on a warm spring day. A hummingbird lands in the palm of his hand. When it flies off, the metaphor in the song is born.

"You have to let them leave and pretend like you don't want to go with them, and you have to pretend this forever," he says.

The album's genesis also parallels Garneau's perspective as a songwriter as El Radio sees him draw lyrically from sources outside himself and his own experiences to those of other characters, both real and imaginary.

There is still a poignant melancholy and bold sincerity that permeates all of Garneau's music, but those qualities are augmented by a playfulness in his melodies and arrangements. You can hear examples of this in the sublime retro-pop of "Fireflies", the album's incredibly catchy standout first single "No More Pirates", and the deceptively upbeat and Baroque-styled "Dirty Night Clowns" (a song inspired by a true life tale of a child molesting dwarf who’d sneak into homes in the dark of night dressed as a clown). Garneau's extensive cast of characters unavoidably comment on the social and political forces that pull us unpredictably through time while rollicking to the rhythms of an organ grinder.

Countering these plays on life, the ever literal "Hands on the Radio" expresses the nostalgia, empathy and embrace for Juarez, Mexico - a border city fraught with the great despair of its infamy, the unsolved murders of hundreds of women, while remaining a rapidly growing metropolis filled with hope. And "Hometown Girls" is an anthem to an American archetype, in which Garneau watches tumbleweeds blow over the lives of girls whom he wishes we loved more. This volley of the violent and the whimsical, the sweet and the sinister, the carnival and the funeral, plays throughout the album.

Broadcasting was originally a gardening term referring to the scattering of seeds. This shining new record, El Radio, is a thirteen-song radio station that will transmit its seeds all over the planet. Hear them grow.

UC Irvine and ANMT join to create new musicals

The Drama Department at the University of California Irvine is partnering with the Academy for New Musical Theatre to create new musicals. The Academy will supply writers, composers, and dramaturgs, and the University will provide directors, facilities, and students. Each musical will be developed in workshop at the Academy, and then presented in concert format at the University. The goal is for some of the musicals to make it to production, perhaps as early as 2010.

The first two musicals out of the starting block are Aging Out, which focuses on foster care kids who are abandoned by the state support system on their 18th birthday, and e-$cape: a cybermusical, inspired by real events in which a social network virtual world spins out of its creator's control and bloodthirsty game players come after him, seeking money, revenge...and someone to blame.

'This is a perfect opportunity for our faculty and students,' says department chair Eli Simon, 'We lead our students to explore new works, shape the future, and rise up to become the next generation of leading theatre artists. Our collaboration with the Academy for New Musical Theatre could not be more compelling in this regard. The opportunity to create new musicals from scratch is exciting, especially when the musicals we engage in are relevant and stimulating to graduate and undergraduate students alike.'

Early workshops of the first two musicals took place in January at the Academy in North Hollywood featuring professional actors who are members of the Academy Repertory Company.

The next phase will be some closed table readings with faculty from both the University and the Academy.

Then beginning in May, students will start to take part in readings and workshops, culminating in concert presentations on the Irvine campus September 18, 19 and 20.

'This is a very exciting partnership,' says the Academy's Artistic Director John Sparks, 'It is an extraordinary opportunity to create artistic but relevant new works for a younger generation of audiences. We are thrilled at the inspiration this affords writers and composers.' The Academy for New Musical Theatre offers one of only three professional programs in the U.S. for writers, composers and actors in musical theatre. In the past four years they've developed over 50 musicals for producers and theatre companies across the U.S.

'We're hoping this will be an annual collaboration, with some works in development, some in concert, and some in performance,' says Simon. 'We've already begun preliminary discussions for musicals for production in 2012-13. We're hoping to foster a steady stream of works that are in process throughout each academic year.'

Aging Out is scheduled for two performances in concert at the Winnifred Smith Concert Hall on September 19th at 8:00p.m. and September 20th at 5:00p.m. The book and lyrics are by Hillary Rollins and Tara Redepenning, with music by Darin Goulet.

e-$cape: a cybermusical is scheduled for performances at the Winnifred Smith Concert Hall on September 18th at 8:00p.m. and September 20th at 8:00p.m. The book and lyrics are by Scott Guy, and the music is by Nick DeGregorio.

Audience feedback is a crucial component of developing new work. To this end, there will be discussions held after each performance.

Tickets will be $6 for a single ticket, $10 admission to both musicals. For more information about performances, contact the Department of Drama at UC/Irivne. For more information about the Academy, or its process of developing musicals, please visit www.anmt.org.

The Secret Handshake to tour in support of new effort

As Luis Dubuc aka The Secret Handshake prepares to release his sophomore record My Name Up In Lights (Triple Crown Records - Out April 21st) - he's also announced preliminary dates for his headlining "No Parents, No Rules" tour which kicks off May 3rd in Waco, TX. More dates will trickle in over the next week or so too including a Dallas, TX release show/party.

The elements that comprise The Secret Handshake’s new album, My Name Up In Lights, aren’t complicated or out of the ordinary. Instead Dallas musician Luis Dubuc has built a collection of songs that embraces an unabashed pop sensibility, drawing on the ‘90s to inspire the disc’s feel-good energy and playful mood. The record follows the success of The Secret Handshake’s previous album—2007’s One Full Year—with more streamlined intent and clarity of vision.

“My first record was 14 songs and it was all over the place,” Dubuc says. “It was like looking in my brain. It was full of ideas and all the songs sounded different. This record is really narrowed down. It’s really influenced by Family Matters and Step By Step and the Ninja Turtles and Len and Spacehog and awesome ‘90s radio music. I just narrowed all those influences down and put them into a record.”

The video for "All For You," the first single off My Name Up In Lights was shot in Brooklyn this past weekend with Chell Stephen and is a tribute to Luis' obsession with 90's pop and TV culture. Look for the video to drop in early May.
