Shonen Knife on tour

Shonen Knife have been the most internationally recognized name in Japanese Rock music since their entrance onto the alternative rock scene in the early 90s seeing them become the indie darlings of hipsters and rock stars alike. 2011 celebrates thirty years since Naoko and the band began releasing albums of their joyous mixture of pop, punk, food and fantasy for the world to enjoy. Since their inception in Osaka in 1981 (featuring Naoko’s sister Atsuko and their friend, bassist/vocalist Michie) to their current lineup featuring members Ritsuko (bass, vocals) and Emi (drums, vocals), Shonen Knife have maintained their rightful place in the ever changing indie rock scene.

In celebration of this milestone, Shonen Knife has announced plans for a North American fall tour kicking off October 20 in Toronto, during which they will be playing fan favorites as well as songs from the recently released, Osaka Ramones, Tribute to the Ramones. The NYC punk forefathers are often cited as one of Shonen Knife’s biggest musical inspirations. A November 18th show at The Bellhouse in Brooklyn, NY will feature a special guest appearance from bassist CJ Ramone, who will join the ladies on stage. The band is also confirmed to perform during CMJ on October 22nd.

The new album, Osaka Ramones gets its title from the trio’s ongoing musical side project, which has made its way in and out of their performing history for decades. This East meets West punk rock combination is now captured in an album recorded and mixed between Osaka and New York over the last year and was co-produced by Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls.

“Ramones were my all-time idols since I first heard their music from a radio and rushed to a record shop. This year is the 30th anniversary of Shonen Knife. For celebration, we decided to record a cover album of our favorite band the Ramones. The title is “Osaka Ramones” with our respect. I’m very happy to release an Osaka Ramones project and to recognize their contribution to the evolution of Shonen Knife“
-Naoko, Shonen Knife

White Wives to tour with Koji

Adeline recording artist White Wives announce a month long December headlining tour. The tour is in support of their debut album Happeners released earlier this year featuring the singles “Indian Summer, Indian Summer” and “Sky Started Crying.” Alternative Press described the album by saying, “Happeners cranks down a number of the tempos for maximum impact, but the slightly subdued fury can't hide the collective heart of punk lifers who know that the loudest voice wins out.” Joining White Wives on this tour will be Koji. Tour dates are listed below.

Consisting of Anti-Flag's Chris "#2" Barker and Chris Head, Roger Harvey of Dandelion Snow and Tyler Kweder of American Armada, White Wives is not, nor was ever intended as a side project. Inspired by the mid-60 s Provo movement, a counterculture movement that used nonviolence and absurd humor to provoke violent reactions from the police, the album bears the title of the movement leaders. "I think that anyone who goes into listening to our record believing that it is an Anti-Flag 'side project' is going to be surprised and to be honest, perhaps a bit shocked," affirms #2.

Rubblebucket on tour

2011 has been a breakout year for Rubblebucket. Releasing Omega La La this summer, and touring non-stop, Rubblebucket has earned praise from across the spectrum, with critics at Paste Magazine, Blurt, Stereogum, Consequence of Sound and more hailing the band as one of the most promising up-and-coming acts in the U.S. Some critics have even gone as far as labeling the band’s upbeat, multifaceted sound “Yes Wave,” in opposition to the nihilistic, late-70s New York genre. Recorded last year at Plantain/DFA Studios with Producer Eric Broucek (LCD Soundsystem, Cut Copy, Hercules and Love Affair) at the helm, Omega La La is the Brooklyn eight piece’s most adventurous record yet, with the band dipping into everything from the dancey indie-pop arrangements to Fela-Kuti inspired afro-beat stomps.

Pacific Symphony Youth on PBS SoCal Nov. 13

PBS SoCal will premiere its original production of “Bulgarian Rhapsody: Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra Tour in Bulgaria” on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. The 30-minute documentary, produced by PBS SoCal’s Maria Hall-Brown, showcases the talented performers of the Santa Ana, Calif.-based Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra as they traveled and performed in the homeland of their beloved Music Director Maxim Eshkenazy.

Encore broadcasts of the special will air Sunday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21 at 10:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 12:30 p.m.

“Bulgarian Rhapsody” travels with 73 youth musicians, who saw, enjoyed and became part of a world rarely experienced even for the seasoned traveler, Bulgaria. Through the eyes of the orchestra members and those who experience their performances, to an intimate look at the beauty and history of a land filled with a rich cultural tapestry of its own, this documentary hopes to illuminate the power, grace and beauty of this universal language…music.

“This shared experience brought so many people from such diverse backgrounds together,” says Hall-Brown. “The documentary hopes to capture the beauty of the Orchestra’s performances, as well as the joy of discovering new friends, all played out against the backdrop of the Bulgarian countryside.”

The PSYO traveled to the ex-Soviet dominated region for 10 days this summer for the opportunity to present three performances in the Bulgarian cities of Plovidiv, Varna and Sofia. The PSYO tackled Gershwin's most ambitious creation, "Porgy and Bess,” a jazz and blues-infused opera written in 1934-35—which served as the centerpiece for the tour. Along with "Porgy and Bess," the orchestra played Bernstein's "Slava! A Political Overture," Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," "Thracian Dances" by Bulgarian composer Petkov Staynov, a suite from "Star Wars" by John Williams and Badelt's "Pirates of the Caribbean."

According to Maestro Eshkenazy, the music challenged PSYO musicians to perform at the highest quality. "Performing three concerts in Bulgarian territory is something that makes me very proud for this organization,” says Eshkenazy. “We performed ‘Porgy and Bess' because it is an American classic, and I wanted the Bulgarian audience to enjoy an American orchestra playing an American classic."

"When an orchestra goes on tour, it helps them grow and meld together," adds Director of Youth Ensembles Melissa Craig. "It promotes personal growth for the musicians, which in turn enhances their musical expression. It's great because most of the students wouldn't otherwise get this experience."

Barry Adamson releases video from upcoming album

Barry Adamson, of the legendary Magazine and Bad Seeds, will unleash his next album in late January 2012. He is giving us the first taste with “Destination”, a roaring garage anthem for the road with jet-fuel energy. The video is available on www.barryadamson.com where you can also get the mp3.

Thirty-four years on from the first album he played on, the seminal Magazine's post-punk classic "Real Life," Barry has made an album that touches on the sonic stepping stones he's used year by year to pave his way to the present. The memories and experience from performing and taking his work across the world with Magazine, the Bad Seeds, Iggy Pop, The Gun Club, writing for David Lynch, Danny Boyle, being nominated for the Mercury Prize, scoring an Olivier award-winning ballet, scooping the Best Short Story gong at Italy's Piemonte Noir festival for his debut work of fiction and writing, directing and editing a movie whilst simultaneously heading back to grace the stage with a reformed Magazine during their triumphant 2009 tour have directly informed this album, coloring it with a steady, sure–handed experience that emanates from the swagger and fingertip fire of rock numbers to emotive, yearning noir ballads and new wave inflicted power pop.

Barry has ultimately channeled himself to make an album that is unmistakably Barry Adamson, gravitating finally to the core of who he is and revealing his findings to startling results.
