The dA Center for the Arts is proud to present Textural Play: The Works of Carol Powell and Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know: The Works of Allison Krumwiede on display January 14th through January 28th, 2012. Featuring the works of two up-and-coming Southern Californian artists, together these exhibitions utilize familiar imagery to produce both playful and self-reflective pieces. The dA will be hosting an opening reception on January 14th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
On display in the main gallery, Textural Play: The Works of Carol Powell is an exploration of life’s humorous and tragic circumstances. Powell creates nostalgic story-book style imagery in
her mixed media pieces that combine fabric, paint, marker and vintage collage ephemera. Powell received both a MA in Printmaking and a MFA in Drawing and Painting from California
State University, Fullerton. Her art has been shown and held in various collections including the Santa Barbara Museum, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and the Santa Monica Museum of Art.
On display in the Joan Weldon Gallery, Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know features newcomer Allison Krumwiede. A recent graduate from the Art Center College of Design, Krumwiede’s
pop culture inspired illustrations bridge the gap between Pop Art and DIY culture. Pieces selected for this exhibition range from zines about River Phoenix to an over-sized Beatles album
cover.

Silverstein to tour and release new album
While the rest of the industry settles down for the holiday, Toronto-based post-hardcore veterans SILVERSTEIN are not only preparing for the release of SHORT SONGS on February 7, 2012, they're also getting their tour shoes laced up and ready to run. Preparing for a national tour supporting August Burns Red (additional support from Texas In July with Letlive and I The Breather on assorted dates), the eight week US and Canadian trek kicks off on January 13th at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ and circles around North America, wrapping up in Philadelphia at the TLA on March 3rd.
Short Songs is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed fifth studio album Rescue, which debuted at #37 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album Chart. Produced by John Valeriote, who produced both Rescue and the Transitions EP, the two-sided release consists of 22 tracks comprised of brand new originals and seminal punk covers - all of which are under 90 seconds. Some of the covers include "Coffee Mug" (originally by Descendents), "Destination: Blood!" (Orchid), "Scenes From Parisian Life" (The Promise Ring), and "The Ballad of Wilhelm Fink" (Green Day). Responding to a thread on Punknews.org, the band had some fun and re-recorded NOFX's "It's My Job To Keep Punk Rock Elite" and changing the lyrics to reflect their reply to some of the comments on the post. The result was a tongue-in-cheek non-album track exclusively streamed at http://www.punknews.org/bands/silverstein titled "It's Your Job To Keep Punk News Elite."
Silverstein is Shane Told (Vocals / Guitar), Neil Boshart (Guitar), Josh Bradford (Guitar), Billy Hamilton (Bass), and Paul Koehler (Drums). Silverstein will be releasing Short Songs via Hopeless Records on February 7, 2012 and touring extensively throughout North America and Europe in 2012.

Fishbone documentary to premiere on TV Jan. 22
Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone will have its national broadcast premiere on Monday, January 22nd, 2012 as part of public television's AfroPoP documentary series. The series, produced by the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) and co-presented by American Public Television (APT), kicks off it's new season with Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, which documents the history of legendary Los Angeles band Fishbone.
The film is being distributed via digital and home video by Cinema Guild, which will present the film exclusively via ITunes starting February 1st, 2012 as part of the celebration of Black History Month and then via home video starting February 22nd, 2012.
When Fishbone first emerged from California, no other band sounded or looked like them, and the weight of their innovative and iconic presence is still being felt decades later. Coinciding with the group’s 25th anniversary, filmmakers Lev Anderson & Chris Metzler have directed a compelling new documentary, narrated by Laurence Fishburne. Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone is both a fascinating and brutally honest look at the band’s history for longtime fans, as well as a perfect entry point for newcomers.
Everyday Sunshine is a documentary about the band Fishbone, musical pioneers who have been rocking on the margins of pop culture for the past 25 years. From the streets of South Central-Los Angeles and the competitive Hollywood music scene of the 1980's, the band rose to prominence, only to fall apart when on the verge of "making it."
Laurence Fishburne narrates Everyday Sunshine, an entertaining cinematic journey into the personal lives of this unique Black rock band, and an untold story of fiercely individual artists in their quest to reclaim their musical legacy while debunking the myths of young Black men from urban America. Highlighting the parallel journeys of a band and their city, Everyday Sunshine explores the personal and cultural forces that gave rise to California's legendary Black punk sons that continue to defy categories and expectations.
At the heart of Fishbone's story is lead singer Angelo Moore and bassist Norwood Fisher who show how they keep the band rolling, out of pride, desperation and love for their art. To overcome money woes, family strife, and the strain of being aging Punk rockers on the road, Norwood and Angelo are challenged to re-invent themselves in the face of dysfunction and ghosts from a painful past.
The documentary includes interviews with: Gwen Stefani (No Doubt), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ice-T (rapper), Branford Marsalis (saxophonist), Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction, Porno For Pyros), Questlove (The Roots), and more.

Tom Maxwell releases holiday single
The former lead vocalist and frontman for the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Tom Maxwell has just released the single “Jacob Marley.” With a theme to warm with hearts of Occupiers everywhere, it’s a holiday song of our times.
Recorded live with his band The Minor Drag on November 26, 2011 at The Murphey School in Durham NC, the track is the first holiday release from Maxwell since the release of 1998’s Christmas Caravan by the Squirrel Nut Zippers.
“I wrote ‘Jacob Marley’ after the economy tanked and the banks got bailed out,” Tom commented. “It was a disaster - and rip off - of almost mythic proportions. In the song, cultural icons like Brother Rabbit (a nod to Br'er Rabbit from the Uncle Remus stories) and Jacob Marley (Scrooge's dead business parter and spiritual benefactor in A Christmas Carol) appear but can't change the situation.”
“Extraordinary problems require extraordinary solutions, and I believe the Occupy movement and the social and political consciousness it represents is our last and best hope. Jacob Marley may not come back again, but we can handle this one on our own.”

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, continues its inaugural season in its permanent new home in Pasadena, with two productions in rotation in March.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’s ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, opening Saturday, March 3 and closing Sunday, May 13, 2012 (previews begin Saturday, February 25), remains a towering tragedy of larger-than-life figures caught up in an empire-shattering dance of lust, love, politics and war. Long on the ANW wish list, it was an early choice for the inaugural Pasadena season, according to Geoff Elliott, who co-directs with Julia Rodriguez-Elliott. “Until now, we just didn’t have the physical capability to give this play, with its many battle scenes and great surround, the grandness it deserves,” he notes. “The depth of our new space has opened up tremendous artistic possibilities for us.” Both history play and sweeping love story, Antony and Cleopatra is undeniably one of the most challenging works in the Shakespeare canon to bring to the stage. Indeed, the last Broadway revival of the classic was in 1952, with a cast headed by real-life star-crossed lovers Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier.
What is reality and what is not? In THE ILLUSION by PIERRE CORNEILLE, adapted by TONY KUSHNER and directed by Casey Stangl, opening Saturday, March 17 and closing Saturday, May 19, 2012 (previews begin Saturday, March 10), a father seeks to reunite with his estranged son. When he enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer to conjure up scenes from the young man’s life, however, the provocative images that the sorcerer shows the anxious father may or may not be quite what they seem. Tony Kushner (Angels in America) triumphantly revitalizes this 17th century theatrical fairy tale, first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille in 1639, and the intoxicating result is poetic and profound, timely and transcendent, comic and moving, and a luminous paean to live theatre and the celebratory theme of this ANW season.
Single tickets are $46 (Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees); and $42 (Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings and Saturday matinees). Groups (10 or more) are $27 (weekdays and Saturday matinees), and $32 (Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees); School Groups (10 or more) are $16 (weekdays and matinees), or $20 (Saturday evenings).
