Singer/songwriter Karla Bonoff grew up in Los Angeles, and was right in the heart of the hootenanny scene in 1969, when the first hints of the coming singer-songwriter wave were coalescing around The Troubadour with the likes Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Elton John, among others. She met other artists there, including Kenny Edwards (who had started the Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt) Wendy Waldman and Andrew Gold. Something powerful in their combined sound brought them together and the band Bryndle, one of the early songwriter groups was born. Bryndle made an album for A&M, but they were a bit ahead of their time, and it was never released.
After Bryndle, Karla went on to compose the core of the album that secured Linda Ronstadt's superstardom, "Hasten Down The Wind". Karla went on to release three hit albums of her own and continues to perform all over America, with her longtime friend, producer and band mate, Kenny Edwards (founding member of the Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt and Bobby Kimmel) accompanying her onstage (on vocals, guitar, mandolin and bass) - and, at most shows, he performs as her opening act.
Karla's legacy as a performer and writer was summed up in a review of her "All My Life" recording in Billboard Magazine: "Long before Alanis and Jewel, there was a breed of singer/songwriters whose earthly anthems of soul-searching, heartache and joy touched souls in a way few can muster today."

Those of you on my e-mail list saw this photo back in March, but due to my own careless error, it didn't make it into the San Gabriel Valley Weekly. And it was a big weekend for them too, with gigs at both Sierra Madre Books and the Wistaria Festival, so I am making it up to them with this do-over.I'm speaking of VIN FIZ FLYER, who will be serving up "Bluegrass with a bit more fiz" this Friday, 5/30 at BEAN TOWN COFFEE BAR in Sierra Madre at 7pm. Early registration for ecofriendly garden class closes Friday
The early-registration deadline for Ecofriendly Hillside Gardening and Terracing is Friday, May 30. Course sessions will be held on June 7, 14, 21, and 28 (Saturdays) from 9:30 AM to 12:45 PM. The class is about two-thirds full as of Tuesday, May 27, and has attracted an interesting group of students, both local to Topanga and otherwise. ASPCA plans events for Adopt-a-Shelter Cat Month
This June, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) hopes animal lovers will consider adopting a shelter cat as it celebrates national “Adopt-a-Shelter Cat” Month with an array of feline-friendly happenings.
By celebrating June as “Adopt-A-Shelter Cat” Month, the ASPCA aims to raise awareness of the importance of “making pet adoption your first option,” especially considering the wide variety of beautiful cats and kittens up for adoption right now in shelters across the country who are looking for a forever home.
“One of the great joys of life is the companionship of an animal,” said ASPCA President and CEO Ed Sayres. “By focusing the spotlight on what great companions cats make, we hope to provide positive outcomes for adoptable shelter cats, even if in a small way. I encourage shelters all around the country to join with us in celebrating ‘Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month’ through June.”

Sonic Youth limited-edition CD ready for June release
On June 10, 2008, Universal Special Markets and Starbucks Entertainment will co-release Sonic Youth’s Hits Are For Squares. The limited-edition CD features Sonic Youth fans from music, film and literature selecting their favorite recordings from the band’s voluminous body of work that dates to 1981. It also includes a new, exclusive track from Sonic Youth, “Slow Revolution” recorded last year with longtime producer John Agnello.The album will be available exclusively at select Starbucks locations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. as well as online at http://www.starbucksentertainment.com/.

Miss Derringer on tour with Blondie
Incubating quite quickly in the Los Angeles music and art scene, Stay Gold "country goth" artist MISS DERRINGER have been making major waves and splashes with their blender of country twang, blues rhythm and 50s girl-group peppiness fortified with a very healthy punk attitude.
With their buzz-heavy presence well-circulated in SoCal including supporting gigs with Bad Religion earlier this Spring, these art-poppers are gearing up for a solid handful of East Coast dates with New Wave punk-pop legends BLONDIE on their Parallel Lines-30th Anniversary Tour (tour dates below, more to be added shortly) who they've played with in the past and whose drummer Clem Burke was once a part-time member of the band.
In addition, their title track from their EP Black Tears has been remixed by the fresh and groundswelling British collaborative project CC/K, made up of Yves Cecil (Chimera Chimera) and Oliver Blair (Kindle) who have done remixes for Client and Robots in Disguise. Headed by the husband and wife team of musicians cum-artists, Liz McGrath (herself a reknowned painter and sculptor) and Morgan Slade (guitarist/songwriter), Miss Derringer welds surf, garage, Shangri La-styled girlpop, and punk into a veritable mixture. Like a red '57 Chevy with white walls and fins souped up by the guys on American Chopper, Miss Derringer revs up a modern yet authentic surfy sound that begs for drag races on the beach.
Their current EP, "The Black Tears EP" has been generating lots of attention for the band including covers of LA Weekly and Music Matters and features on Vlaze TV. The groundbreaking 3-D video for "Black Tears" debuted at Liz's gallery showing for her artwork in December. The band is currently writing their next album titled Winter Hill, loosely based on the Winter Hill Irish mob war that took place in Boston in the early 1960's.

Tickets selling swiftly for Madonna tour
Ticket sales for Madonna's highly anticipated Sticky & Sweet Tour continued to explode throughout Europe and North America, it was confirmed by the tour's producer, Live Nation.
The demand for tickets in Paris for Madonna's scheduled September 20th performance was so staggering that a second and final performance has just been announced for September 21st.
The Sticky & Sweet Zurich show at the Military Airfield Dubendorf scheduled for August 30th has just glided past the 70,000 mark as Madonna fans buy tickets in record breaking numbers for that show as well as in Vancouver, where Madonna's October 30th performance sold 50,000 tickets in a record breaking 29 minutes. In addition, due to instant sellouts in Toronto at Air Canada Centre on October 18th and Montreal at the Bell Centre on October 22nd, second shows in both markets have been added -- October 19th in Toronto at the Air Canada Centre and October 23 at Montreal’s Bell Centre.
These new sellout performances add to a list of sellouts that already include three sold out Madison Square Garden shows in New York City on October 6, 7 and 11 and sellouts in Boston and Chicago where a second show October 27th at the United Center will go on sale on June 2nd. Additional Madonna shows on sale this weekend include: Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston, Miami, Las Vegas, Denver, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Atlantic City (see listing below venue, show date and on-sale dates).
