Bar Celona to host "Foster Soles" benefit for Hillsides

With over 500,000 children in foster care nationwide, one Pasadena restaurant is stepping up to help those foster care children living in Los Angeles. Bar Celona, a modern Spanish tapas bar, restaurant and lounge, is hosting the launch of Hillsides “Foster Soles” on April 30.

Hillsides “Foster Soles,” an online auction of celebrity autographed shoes, will raise funds for the foster care children living at Hillsides, which creates safe places for children and families in Los Angeles County, including Pasadena. With the aim of also raising awareness of foster care issues, the online auction has already drawn the attention of many celebrities and their autographed shoes. Celebrities include Elton John and his band, Shia LeBeouf, cast of USA Television Network’s “Burn Notice” Jeffrey Donovan, Bruce Campbell, and Gabrielle Anwar, Jack Johnson, Dave Koz, Marlee Matlin’s “Dancing with the Stars” shoes as well as her dancing partner’s, Fabian Sanchez, Cheryl Farrell, among many more.

Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis has also donated shoes for the online auction. A world-renowned metal sculpture artist, Bruce Gray, has also donated a tabletop shoe sculpture which will be displayed.

At Bar Celona, celebrities will have entrance into the VIP lounge which includes complimentary Bar Celona signature sangria and Spanish champagne (cava). Additionally for their pleasure, Bar Celona will have an on-site sommelier to host a Spanish wine-tasting session in the VIP lounge with Spanish cheeses, meats and charcuterie and the chef’s selection of Spanish tapas. Guests will have an opportunity to bid on the celebrity autographed shoes, which will also be displayed at the venue, while sipping on signature sangria and savoring tapas. To add to the festivities, guests are encouraged to wear their funniest or wildest shoes for an additional evening contest.

Bar Celona and its sister restaurant, Villa SORRISO, are located in the historic Colorado Boulevard retail district of Old Pasadena, and are the creation of local restaurateurs Jack Huang and Karen Huang, who is also on the board of directors of the foster care charity. Set on a stage of rich crimson red and hues of mellow mustard, Bar Celona invokes the traditions of the traditional tapas bars of Spain, with handcrafted murals of ‘the running of the bulls,’ wine offerings geared toward those of the Spanish vineyards, house made sangrias, and the popular small plates that trigger a smiling sigh.

Guests who bid on April 30 will get a chance to vie for celebrity shoes with online visitors until the auction’s closing date, May 15.

Bar Celona, celebrities, and bidders of Hillsides “Foster Soles” can be assured that putting their best foot forward ensures a better pathway for foster care children.

We've been itchin' to do a show with Heybale (outside of our Annual party at Maria's Taco Xpress) and that time has finally come. Most of you know how disappointed I was when I missed Chrissie Hynde when she sat in with the boys a few weeks back. For those of you that can't normally make it out to see this legendary band on a Sunday night, here's your chance to shake your tailfeather and sleep in the next day! Not to mention we've got Shawn Nelson AND Dave Insley & The Careless Smokers to wet your wistle and get your booty warmed up on the dancefloor.

For those of you not familiar with Heybale! ... (and how could that be?!)... read on!

"Regulars at Austin's Continental Club, Heybale would stand out if for no other reason than the pedigrees of its members. Merle Haggard sideman Redd Volkaert is one of the Telecaster visionaries of his generation. Earl Ball played keys on the Byrds' Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, produced Haggard's 1970 Bob Wills tribute album, and later toured with Johnny Cash. Gary Claxton is an experienced vocalist, bassist Kevin Smith worked with Brian Setzer, and Tom Lewis drummed with the Wagoneers and Raul Malo. They deliver an effective blend of standards, including Willie Nelson's “Mr. Record Man” and Faron Young's 1971 hit “Step Aside”. It's all about unadorned Texas honky-tonk and dance music, something Heybale delivers flawlessly." - RICH KIENZLE - NO DEPRESSION MAGAZINE

"When country music was "discovered" to be more popular than rock and a host of other genres in the 90s it seemed to prompt Nashville and elsewhere to aim to be everything for everyone. To some extent they succeeded, but they gave up something in the process, and if you want to get a taste of what that something is here it is. I love these songs, and the way these guys play them and write them it's obvious they do too.I've seen them a number of times at the Continental and the audience is madeup of a crazy mixture of hipsters, drunks, punks dancing with sexy grandmas and a smattering of Austin's best musicians. The music transcends a lot ofthe usual barriers. Whether of not you went to church you can still get alittle bit of heaven on a Sunday night." -DAVID BYRNE

Tim Fite and Busdriver to perform at Natural History Museum in LA

The Natural History Museum in Los Angeles is undoubtedly host to a collection of oddities, but probably none so unusual as the pairing of the genre-bending Brooklynite Tim Fite with Los Angeles machine-gunning MC Busdriver at the inaugural 2009 "First Friday" series on April 3rd. The two will each play a set following a lecture by Dr Michael Ryan entitled "Darwin's Other Great Theory: Sexual Selection, or Why Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus." In other words, going to this will make you a cultural god...

Tim Fite's most recent studio album Fair Ain't Fair brought comparisons from the Washington Post to Beck and Sufjan Stevens, who wrote "[this is ] the type of project that marries whimsical surrealism with singalong melodies, witty satire with bouncy beats," while NPR's "Bryant Park Project" said "it's one of those records that just makes you smile." Fite has spent the past year touring in support of the record with the likes of the Watson Twins, Man Man, Constantines, Adam Green and Les Claypool.

Busdriver, who was most recently featured in the film This is the Life, a documentary about the hip hop scene surrounding the Good Life restaurant in South Los Angeles, is the rare hip hop artist who can bridge the divide between that scene and indie rock. He has toured with everyone from Deerhoof and Cocorosie to EL-P and Dizzee Rascal. His new record Jhelli Beam is set for release June 9.

The "First Fridays" series celebrate "Darwin Year" in honor of Charles Darwin's 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of his world-altering On the Origins of the Species by Means of Natural Selection. Often considered one of the two or three most important - and misunderstood - texts published in the sciences, The Origin of Species is also one of a handful of scientific works that has reverberated beyond science, shaking the foundations of art, literature, philosophy, religion and society.

This season's First Fridays honors Darwin through entertaining and fascinating conversations with six of the world's foremost authors and experts on the life of Darwin, the science of evolution, and the revolutionary impact of the man and his work.

The event is being sponsored by our friends at WCCC, a radio station that has always supported Shadows Fall and countless other local bands. We will be busting out some new tunes from our upcoming album so be sure to come on down and rip it up with us.”

“And what?! Shadows Fall on a festival with Bruce Springsteen and Snoop Dogg?!” added Fair. “Hells yeah! I could not be more excited to have been invited to play at this year’s Bonnaroo festival. I love sharing the stage with such a diverse group of bands and bringing a little metal to the proceedings. Shadows Fall will be representing the heavier side of music, along with our friends in Down and Dillinger Escape Plan among others. Fastball touring in support of upcoming release

With the release of their fifth studio album Little White Lies approaching on April 14, 2009 (MRI/RED Dist.), the members of FASTBALL are getting ready to take their show on the road. Wowing audiences with seven shows at SXSW last week, Fastball have perfected a set that is chock full of new material such as "All I Was Looking For Was You", "The Malcontent (The Modern World)" and the first single, "Little White Lies". Of course, some old classics like "Out of My Head" and "The Way" off of their Grammy nominated album, All the Pain Money Can Buy make their way into the set to keep new and old fans happy.

Beginning the trek at LA's The Mint on April 25th, Fastball will travel up the West Coast to Seattle and then head Westward making stops in Chicago, Columbus and New York City on May 9th before heading South to finish up the tour in Charlottesville, VA on May 13th, 2009.
Little White Lies, produced by C.J. Eiriksson (Blue October, Jack's Mannequin) and vocalist/guitarist Miles Zuniga, boasts the same great harmonies, retro guitar riffs and toe-tapping melodies that encompass the very being of Fastball.

The addition of Corey Glaeser (bass) to the live band frees Tony Scalzo (guitar, piano, vox) to tickle the ivories and strum his guitar while completing Fastball's dual vocal attack, and brings an entirely new element to the live show. With the support of Joey Shuffield's clockwork drumbeats, this show is guaranteed to keep you whistling and humming all the way home.

My Dear Disco on tour in support of LP

Emerging from the Ann Arbor suburb of Detroit, My Dear Disco has been cutting a path throughout the Midwest with its addictive self-branded style of “danethink” music which displays influences from Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder to Daft Punk and Tom Waits. The band has kept busy in the studio as well, recently producing remixes of Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” and Franz Ferdinand’s “Ulysses” that incorporate the band’s live instrumentation into each tune’s original tracks.

Known for its distinctive, “Dancethink Music,” My Dear Disco’s debut album Dancethink LP has met with much critical acclaim since its release and the band’s unique sound and style has begun to make waves nationwide. The album features mixes by Grammy-nominated engineer Mark Saunders and his multi-platinum record generating studio in New York, the same people responsible for the sound of Shiny Toy Guns’ We Are Pilots, Tricky’s Maxinquaye, David Byrne’s Feelings, and The Cure’s Wish. Additionally, the band’s high energy, inventive live shows have been generating hard-fought praise all their own.

In 2008, My Dear Disco was named one of the most promising bands in the country by American Eagle’s “New Music Union” and was invited to perform at the American Eagle Summer Festival, curated by Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers. This resulted in a fully-stocked summer 2008 festival schedule where the band performed alongside artists such as Lotus, Moe, Buckethead, and Bela Fleck. My Dear Disco continues on the road and will hit the festival circuit once again in the summer of 2009, in full-flight, following its “Dancethink Music,” wherever it takes them.

Chickefoot (Joe Satriani, Chad Smith, Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar) to release album in June

Four of rock music’s most successful and influential musicians are combining their talents to create the much anticipated rock group Chickenfoot. Guitar hero Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and frontman Sammy Hagar’s new project has found the four working side-by-side for the last few months recording their self-titled debut album, Chickenfoot, which will be released in June, 2009. The band will grace the cover of an upcoming issue of Guitar World magazine on stands in April.

Long before these four rock icons came together to form Chickenfoot, they already had filled the pages of rock history with enough individual mind-blowing chapters to boggle the mind of any fan or musician alike. Satriani had his own blazing solo career as a much respected guitar virtuoso; Chad Smith is the drummer of world renowned rock band The Red Hot Chili Peppers; and Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar have been working together since their days as lead bassist and singer, respectively, in Van Halen. These talented individuals were aching to work together in a band that produced rock like they never have before.

“After just a few songs, it became stunningly obvious that we shared a musical agenda and an overall agenda,” says Satriani. “When I play with Chickenfoot, I find myself wanting to give them more all the time. I don’t hold anything back. I think the rest of the guys feel the same way.”

“I really wasn’t looking to have a real band,” says Hagar. “But…the minute we started jamming it was obvious that this is something that needs to be heard.”

The news that they had pooled their inordinate talents to one collective whole quickly spread like wildfire across the internet and rock metal pages over the last year as each member slowly disclosed more and more details about the mystery project.

The self-titled debut is an 11-track hard rock album that sets a new standard for rock music in the new millennium. Produced by Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones) and mixed by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica), the band is not lacking energy or enthusiasm in this project.

Joe Bosso of Guitar World says, “Clearly enthusiasm is no problem in the land of Chickenfoot…the finished album is an 11-song slab of raging rock…the songs stomp and snort and do all the things that great rock songs should do.”

From the thunderous, ominous opening strains of “Avenida Revolution” (detailing the bloody drug wards in Tijuana) to the album closer, the shimmering rock ballad “Future’s in the Past,” Chickenfoot is a firebomb of a record. The band kicks and snorts their way through a passel of take-no-prisoners rock tracks like “Soap on a Rope,” “Sexy Little Thing,” “Oh Yeah” and “My Kind of Girl” – “the kinds of songs I could never do on my own,” says Satriani, “I needed a band like this to make those songs come alive.” The band also explores mature themes on such songs as “Runnin’ Out,” about a world stretched to the breaking point to “Learning to Fall,” perhaps the most poignant love song Hagar has ever written.

Full Chickenfoot Track Listing:
1. Avenida Revolution
2. Soap on a Rope
3. Sexy Little Thing

5. Runnin’ Out
6. Get It Up
7. Down the Drain
