Xray Eyeballs to release album

Xray Eyeballs is the brainchild of O.J. San Felipe. Originally from San Francisco, O.J. landed in Brooklyn in 2000, but only after numerous cross-country adventures. Upon settling, O.J. quickly cemented himself in the underground Brooklyn punk, noise, and indie scene playing in numerous bands including Golden Triangle (Mexican Summer, Hardly Art). While Golden Triangle is known as an all around party band that bashes out garage pop tunes that could easily be found on a Nuggets compilation, O.J. had something else in mind for Xray Eyeballs.

Starting as a solo project, O.J. aimed to make pop songs that kids could remember after leaving the party. O.J. explains, “I just wanted to make every song sound like a lullaby. To me, lullabies are the most memorable kind of songs; everyone remembers them from when they’re babies. They’re not all happy lullabies either. I think people like songs they can relate to, with things like love, loss, dark vices, and sex.”

So while these songs are filled with dreamy pop hooks and melancholic melodies, they are all covered in a spooky haze.

Once O.J. had the framework for the songs, he gathered fellow Golden Triangle band mates Carly Rabalais (Bass, Vocals) and Jay High (Guitar, ex Gogogo Airheart), along with Rop Style (Synth, Theremin, Beats, formerly of the famed band Pee Chees), and Allison Press (Drums). Together, their live show rivals the crowd up into a huge party frenzy, like their fellow garage contemporaries (and buds) King Khan and Black Lips, except it’s carried out with a New-Wave Pop twist.

Drawing comparisons to the frantic pop of Jay Reatard and the Urinals, and the moodiness of Velvet Underground and Jesus and Mary Chain, Xray Eyeballs twist it all into their own pop concoction. Their debut LP, Not Nothing, will be released on April 19th, 2011 on Kanine Records.

You Say Party cancels tour with Young Galaxy

Vancouver-based You Say Party have been forced to pull out of their upcoming co-headline tour with label-mates Young Galaxy. Singer Becky Ninkovic has been battling bronchitis and has been advised to rest forcing the band to cancel their participation in the tour.

A number of the dates have already been rescheduled with Young Galaxy being joined by fellow Montreal residents Winter Gloves. A full list of confirmed dates will be announced soon.

Young Galaxy's stunning new album Shapeshifting will be released on February 8th and is unlike anything the band has done before. Shapeshifting was recorded in Montreal and then sent away, across the ocean, to one of the world's most acclaimed and secretive producers. For nine months, Dan Lissvik, half of the Swedish duo Studio, curved and refashioned the tracks; he made and remade them. The finished album is a thing of cold reverb, hot drums and synth.

Tahiti 80 to release album and tour

French sextet Tahiti 80 are gearing up to release their new full-length, The Past, The Present & The Possible, but first the ever-prolific group will drop the Darlin EP on January 31st (both will be released on their own label, Human Sounds). The band is offering one of the EP’s track for free, a banging remix of “Darlin” by Detroit-based producer Jimmy Edgar, who has released music on Warp Records and K7 Records.

If you didn’t catch the premiere at About.com: Dance Music/Electronica, click HERE to stream/download the track. You can also catch them on the road on a brief US tour this March, when the band hits Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Tahiti 80 whip up a danceable mix of live instrumentation and electronic sounds filled with breezy melodies and intoxicating grooves. The band’s debut album, Puzzle, was released by Minty Fresh in the U.S. in 1999, and was critically acclaimed as a refreshingly upbeat nod to late 60s West Coast pop (particularly the Beach Boys). The album also placed Tahiti 80 squarely in the center of the “French Pop Invasion” that was hitting the U.S., along with fellow French bands Phoenix and Air (most notably). The band has been relentlessly productive ever since, having released an astounding ten EP’s and The Past, The Present & The Possiblemarking their sixth full-length album.

Tahiti 80 US Tour Dates:
03/09: Chicago, IL @ The Abbey (11:30 PM)
03/10, New York, NY @ Mercury Lounge (11:00 PM)
03/13: San Francisco, CA @ Rickshaw Stop (10:45 PM)
03/14: Los Angeles, CA @ Troubadour (10:00 PM)

Vanessa Paradis to release greatest hits album

Decca Records announces the upcoming greatest hits release from one of France’s icons with Vanessa Paradis Best Of - available everywhere February 15th. The release will be followed up by two American concerts on February 16th at The Town Hall in New York City and February 18th at The Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.

Known in America primarily for her film and modeling careers, Vanessa first captured attention for her impressive musical debut in 1987. Her single, “Joe le Taxi,” reached Number 1 on the charts in multiple countries when she was only 14 years old. In the years since, she has continued to earn acclaim as a singer, serving as muse to such varied songwriters and producers as Serge Gainsbourg, Lenny Kravitz and, most recently, the French electropop star Matthieu Chedid (who performs as “—M—”). Her recent studio album Divinidylle won her two major Victoires de la Musique awards (the French equivalent of Grammys): Album of the Year and Female Singer.

Best Of features Paradis’ most recognizable songs from a career that spans just over twenty years along with previously unreleased bonus tracks including “Il Y A” (There Is) and the Cole Porter classic “I Love Paris”. Another selection from the impressive track listing is “Be My Baby” -- written and produced by American rock musician Lenny Kravitz on her self-titled English language album.

As she has proven time and again with her continued international success, Vanessa Paradis’ instrument is one that transcends borders and language by conveying a refreshing purity that has become so rare in a world of manufactured talent. She will no doubt continue to win fans by bringing her greatest hits stateside and performing for lucky audiences in New York and Los Angeles.
