Join celebrities from film, music and television at Malibu’s Surfrider Beach on Saturday, September 10 as they surf First Point in the Surfrider Foundation’s 6th Annual Celebrity Expression Session presented by Cali Bamboo. The hour-long free surf gives participants the opportunity to demonstrate their surfing skills on Malibu’s famous wave, while raising funds and awareness for the organization.
This is the fourth year that the Malibu Surfing Association’s MSA Classic is hosting the Celebrity Expression Session, which has attracted supporters such as Jason Mraz, Eric Balfour, Anthony Kiedis and Flea, and has raised more than $25,000 to protect our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. The MSA Classic is the premier contest in the Coalition of Surfing Clubs’ annual series. This year’s MSA Classic celebrates the club’s 50th anniversary, and is expected to draw 300 athletes from some of the world’s elite surfing clubs.
“We’re excited to be back at Malibu with Cali Bamboo and the Malibu Surfing Association for what promises to be another great Celebrity Expression Session,” says Alexis Henry, Surfrider Foundation’s Communications Manager. “Not only will beachgoers get to watch one of the longest running surf club contests, they’ll also get to watch our passionate celebrity supporters as they raise funds and awareness for the Foundation.”
San Diego-based Cali Bamboo, the premier manufacturer of green building materials made primarily from bamboo, returns for a second year as the Celebrity Expression Session’s presenting sponsor. Leading up to the event, Cali Bamboo is hosting a National Greenscape Challenge at www.calibamboo.com/greenscapechallenge.html to promote eco-friendly landscape and garden designs. The contest, inspired by Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Gardens program, runs until July 31. The grand-prize winner, who will be announced on August 8, will enjoy an all-expense paid weekend to Los Angeles to watch the Celebrity Expression session, and enjoy a 30-minute surf session with a celebrity from the event.
“2010 was our first year attending and sponsoring the Celebrity Expression Session and it was a memorable experience to say the least. Bob Sheppard in concert at Descanso Gardens Aug. 4
Woodwind specialist Bob Sheppard has performed with many greats of jazz and pop, including Chick Corea, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell. He will headline a concert of straight-ahead jazz on Thursday, Aug. 4, at Descanso Gardens. The concert begins at 5:30 p.m.
Sheppard is in demand both as a recording and touring artist. His resume is lengthy – and his collaborations are prestigious. He has also worked with Steely Dan, Randy Newman, Herbie Hancock – the list goes on and on. Proficient in saxophone, flute and clarinet, he is on the faculty of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California and teaches music clinics at colleges across the country.
Music on the Main, the summer jazz series, continues Thursdays through Aug. 25 with a different jazz artist every week. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and picnics (normally not allowed in the Gardens) and settle back to savor the performance.
Descanso Gardens is open extended hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays through Aug. 25. The Camellia Lounge, featuring signature cocktails and light food fare, is open from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays through Aug. 25. DEIDRE's debut EP "Curious Parcel" is like a femme fatale who gets distracted and falls in love - filled with vulnerability, pleasure, suspicion, and tragedy. Mixing sounds of the blues, gypsies, surf safaris, 60s a-go-go and more, she melds numerous influences into songs of love and horror - a totally new sound for the singer who also performs in Brooklyn bands Savoir Adore and French Horn Rebellion.
But where did inspiration for such a blend of sounds come from? In August of 2010, DEIDRE found a package on her doorstep, severely weathered, and covered in forwarded addresses ranging from New Orleans to Berlin, dated from 1905 to 1966. The National Security Agency deemed the package a "curious parcel" and has urged DEIDRE to voluntarily hand over the object to them for investigation. But in an act almost as mysterious as the parcel itself, she decided to take the secrets within it and share them with the world. Curating and hosting conceptual parties at Brooklyn's Zebulon over the last year, DEIDRE began to harness her storytelling skills. She and producer David Perlick-Molinari (French Horn Rebellion, MGMT's Time To Pretend) have captured that energy on this collection of recordings, with much more on the way.

Derek Sherinian to release album
Music Theories, a division of the Mascot Label Group, has announced a September 27 release date for Derek Sherinian’s Oceana. Recognized by many as the premiere rock keyboardist of his generation, Sherinian has performed for millions via the vehicles of Black Country Communion (of which he is a current member alongside Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham, Joe Bonamassa), Dream Theater, Alice Cooper, Buddy Miles, and as an off-stage performer accompanying KISS.
He also enjoyed tenures with Billy Idol, Yngwie Malmsteen and many others. Favoring a guitar heavy rock based approach to fusion ala one of his musical heroes Jeff Beck, Oceana once again displays the power and energy Sherinian creates in the studio, setting him apart from most jazz fusion ensembles in the process. He displays the rare combination of being a musical chameleon, while maintaining his signature style in no matter what genre he is playing in. With Oceana, the stage is set for Sherinian’s inspiration to be propelled in to the mainstream.
Sherinian has carved out a niche for himself in the progressive metal scene. He has attracted the best players on Earth to his solo album sessions, some of whom include luminaries Al DiMeola, Steve Lukather, Yngwie Malmsteen, Slash, John Petrucci, Allan Holdsworth, and Zakk Wylde.
With Oceana, again an assemblage of some of the most talented players to ever strap on a guitar join Sherinian in the studio. Steve Lukather once again collaborated with the keyboardist for the tracks “Mulholland,” “Euphoria,” and “Seven Sins.” Former Planet X guitarist and fusion legend Tony MacAlpine laid down performances for “Five Elements,” and “Mercury 7.” The one and only Steve Stevens is featured on “Ghost Runner,” and the title track “Oceana.” Black Country Communion band mate Joe Bonamassa makes an appearance as well on “I Heard That,” while Doug Aldrich performs on “El Camino Diablo.” Simon Phillips performs all drums on Oceana, while Jimmy Johnson laid down the bass on all tracks outside of “Ghost Runner” and the title track which features Tony Franklin.
The 1970s saw the creation of keyboard legends, when titans including Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman and Jon Lord were superstars. It was a time when talent on the keys was not only appreciated, but celebrated in popular music. With Oceana, perhaps a rebirth is upon the precipice of change for the Santa Cruz-raised, Berklee School of Music educated Sherinian to witness a new dawn where keyboardists once again are heroes. Inevitably, it is only a matter of time before Sherinian is recognized as the premiere rock keyboardist of this generation.

Michael Jackson impersonators grace Poly Styrene video
The video for Poly Styrene’s “Ghoulish” has just been released. The video is replete with Michael Jackson impersonators, some more comical than others, as Michael was the inspiration for the song. The video, directed by Lauryn Siegel, also features actress Gabby Hoffman. Future Noise Music will release a single for the track on August 8th, which includes a remix by Hercules and Love Affair. The single will be available at iTunes and all digital retailers.

Although music lost one of its most uniquely idiosyncratic legends, when Poly Styrene tragically succumbed to cancer in April, she had thankfully finished recording her Generation Indigo album before being diagnosed, giving her take on the 21st century, in similar fashion to her uncannily clairvoyant X-Ray Spex missives of the punk era. Following computer-age anthem ‘Virtual Boyfriend’, the album’s first single, comes the rapturous ‘Ghoulish’; sadly Poly’s first posthumous single.
The song beautifully represents Poly’s compassionate spirit and lifelong talent for tackling unusual but glaring subject matter, often fuelled by her fixation with watching the TV news.
‘Ghoulish’ was inspired by coverage of Michael Jackson at the end of his life, seeing through his ‘crimson lips ‘n‘ charcoal eyes‘ to declare, ‘I can see you’re quite a nice guy’. Speaking before the album’s release, Poly explained how she had found Jacko‘s white face and makeup ghoulish, but ‘I could see that he was probably a nice guy…I never met him, but he seemed soft spoken and gentle. It was all over the media and I thought I would write that song, but it could be about any goth guy.’
