Butterfly Boucher to tour in support of new album

Singer-songwriter-musician BUTTERFLY BOUCHER has announced the release of her forthcoming album SCARY FRAGILE, available digitally and in stores June 2 via the imprint Situation Operation. It was produced by David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Regina Spektor, Kelly Clarkson, The Strokes).

The album’s lead single “Gun For A Tongue” captures Butterfly’s edgy mix of soaring pop-rock melodies and unflinchingly intimate lyrics, delivered with her trademark vocal dexterity. The song is available now as an iTunes Exclusive track

BUTTERFLY will hit the road for an East and West Coast U.S. tour including performances Wednesday, May 20 at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City and in Los Angeles Monday, June 1 at Spaceland. She’ll also launch a residency at the Hotel Café Wednesday, June 3 -- which marks her official CD release show presented by KCRW -- and continuing June 10 and 17th. On June 7, Butterfly will join LA singer-songwriter Miranda Lee Richards for a one-off show at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach. Next, she’ll head up the west coast for a handful of dates with French artist Emilie Simone in Portland, Seattle and San Francisco.

On Tuesday, July 7, BUTTERFLY will be the featured interview and live performance guest on KCRW’s “MORNING BECOMES ECLECTIC” airing daily (M-F) in Los Angeles on KCRW 89.9FM. The show can be heard online at:

SCARY FRAGILE marks the highly anticipated follow-up to BUTTERFLY’s debut album Flutterby (A&M/Geffen) of which the New York Times wrote: “Ms. Boucher plays almost all the album’s instruments, and she sings her crafty lyrics and big, crashing melodies with reckless abandon: you picture her running downhill, arms spread, face to the sky. Why isn’t she everywhere, already?”

Elsewhere, People magazine hailed the album’s “solid musicianship and smart lyrics.”

Despite this praise and high profile TV and film placements, BUTTERFLY went through a three-year battle to put out her new album and was finally released from her label.

“They’d say my sound was too indie for pop and too pop for the indie scene,“ she explains, adding: "I'm so sick of hearing that as a negative-- I've always thought it was a good thing!”

BUTTERFLY did most of the pre-production at her home studio due to David Kahne’s busy schedule.

“I ended up doing the bass, the guitar, keyboards, lead vocals and backing vocals, so by the time David was ready, these demos were pretty dense in their ideas,” she explains.

A multi-instrumentalist from an early age, BUTTERFLY adds, “When I was writing the album, I wanted to go into the studio with a well-rehearsed band and lay the songs down live, since I’d never done it that way. But after hearing the songs I brought him, David said he felt there was something more unique and special about me having played it all myself, which was a huge compliment, but the whole idea of having a live band was thrown out the window at that point.”

U.S. audiences got their first taste of Australia native BUTTERFLY in 2004 when she joined Sarah McLachlan’s highly popular “Afterglow” tour. The tour helped to generate Flutterby independent sales of over 20,000 CDs alone during the run, garnering a legion of new fans along the way. BUTTERFLY is also part of Nashville’s ”Ten Out of Tenn,” a collaborative group of singer-songwriters which united last fall for a nationwide trek and included fellow Nashville artists: Griffin House, Erin McCarley and Jeremy Lister, to name a few.

BUTTERFLY was musical from a young age. She was born in the middle of a seven-daughter family to artistic and free-spirited parents--her father was in rock n’ roll bands and her mother a ballerina--who encouraged her and her sisters to follow their dreams. A tight unit, BUTTERFLY was raised with a nomadic upbringing, traveling across Australian outback with her family and picking up roots every few months. Not often finding other 11-year-old musicians to hang out with, BUTTERFLY learned how to play each instrument herself, a skill that she has continued to develop and use throughout her career.

As a multi-instrumentalist, BUTTERFLY has played on many albums, including playing the drums on Mat Kearney’s song “Breathe In, Breathe Out” (the “Grey’s Anatomy” theme song), vocals on David Mead’s album Indiana. She recorded a duet with David Bowie of his song “Changes” for the film soundtrack for Shrek 2. ”

BUTTERFLY’s own songs have been featured on the TV series “The Days,” “Wonderfalls,” “Spin City,” and “Charmed,” plus “Grey’s Anatomy” has featured three of her songs over the years, including most recently “A Bitter Song.”
