FilmFunds launches search app for movie info
FilmFunds (www.filmfunds.com ) will launch its much-anticipated mobile search app – a revolutionary piece of new technology that not only identifies a range of still images, but offers groundbreaking video recognition. Film lovers can simply point their smartphones at movie trailers, posters, billboards, ads and other film-related imagery, snap a photo, and instantly receive information about the film, buy tickets, etc., providing a powerful new tool for on-the-go audiences.
FilmFunds celebrates the app launch through a promotion with popular movie ticket service Fandango, entitled “Take One,” giving away 100 movie tickets every day for a full 100 days. If a trailer, poster or other ad materials aren’t in the FilmFunds database, simply upload/register it to the FilmFunds website to be automatically entered in the daily drawing to win movie tickets. The more uploads, the more chances to win! At the end of 100 days of summer, the app user with the most uploads will win the grand prize – a beautiful Fiat 500.
The app, which may be downloaded for free at www.FilmFunds.com or from the iTunes store, is powered by advanced Serge image and video recognition technology (recognizing up to 60 frames per second). The FilmFunds smartphone app gives users an easy way to learn more about, and purchase tickets for, this summer’s biggest blockbusters, including the The Avengers, Rock of Ages, Madagascar 3, Brave, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Dark Knight Rises, Ice Age: Continental Drift, The Bourne Legacy, The Expendables 2 and more.
“We think giving 100 tickets away per day throughout the summer movie season, not to mention the grand prize, is the perfect way to roll out our new FilmFunds app,” explains FilmFunds CEO Jason Scoggins. “This marks the first time video recognition technology is being used this way. Whether you’re watching a trailer online, driving past a billboard or walking past a one-sheet on your way to the theater, the app provides a fun way to buy movie tickets through Fandango and get instant information about what’s currently in theaters and upcoming releases.”

NPR Music launches free iPad app
Continuing to establish public media as the premier home for music that matters, NPR Music amplifies its inventive and award-winning content for a new platform with the NPR Music iPad App, now available as a free download in the App store. The NPR Music iPad App presents an immersive audio and visual experience optimized for the tablet’s capabilities. With just a tap and a swipe, audiences can navigate through exclusive public radio live performances, interviews, signature programs, original reporting and commentary, advance album listens, and live station streams. The App also features a groundbreaking visual playlist that can be saved for offline listening.
On March 7, NPR Music will present an exclusive in-app concert with The Shins, who will perform songs from the anticipated new album Port of Morrow. The special invite-only event from (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York City will stream live exclusively in the NPR Music iPad App, beginning that evening at 10PM (ET). The concert will replay on NPR.org beginning March 8. More details and a calendar reminder for the live event can be obtained in the App. Fans of The Shins in New York City should be on the lookout for an opportunity to attend this one-time concert.
Built entirely in-house by NPR’s digital media team, the iPad App uses animations to create a true multimedia music magazine – a robust merger of audio, text and video in one stunning app. The App’s home screen opens to the latest NPR Music content and gives immediate access to NPR Music Radio and live streams from more than 100 public radio stations. Fans can dive right in or browse more selectively by filtering from content types (read Articles, watch Videos, listen to Programs) or genres (Rock, Jazz, Classical, Folk, Hip-Hop/R&B, World or Electronic/Dance). A persistent audio player allows for continuous discovery and a playlist can be easily built by dragging and dropping. The App also encourages engagement and exploration through a Related Stories section and also a special feature that suggests NPR Music stories based on artists already in an individual’s iTunes library.
All of NPR Music’s programs are available in the iPad App, including the weekly music shows All Songs Considered and Alt.Latino; Tiny Desk Concerts, stripped-down performances recorded live at All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen’s desk; the eclectic interview and performance show World Cafe from WXPN in Philadelphia; and “Live at the Village Vanguard” with WBGO in Newark, recorded at the famed jazz venue. NPR Music's special coverage and live concert streams from popular music festivals such as South by Southwest, Sasquatch! and the Newport Folk and Jazz festivals are also available through the App.
Lexus is the exclusive launch sponsor of the NPR Music iPad App. The new Music App offers the same innovative sponsorship elements as the award-winning NPR News App, which garnered back-to-back Media Vanguard Awards from Ad Age in 2010 and 2011 for best broadcast-to-digital app suite.
NPR Music celebrates great music in every genre and is an industry leader in music discovery. The Emmy Award-winning free, multimedia website at www.npr.org/music offers new features daily and an extensive archive, in collaboration with NPR's newsmagazines, public radio Member stations and the passionate NPR community. The NPR Music iPad App joins the ever-expanding suite of NPR Mobile, allowing anyone with a mobile device to enjoy NPR News, NPR Music and Member station content for free.

Trace Adkins shares 'Owney' book online
Owney the dog is a loveable and inspirational figure in mail-service history and a friend to children and visitors to the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum. This historic pooch is now featured in Owney: Tales from the Rails, a new free eBook narrated and performed by country singer Trace Adkins, and available two ways—online and as an Apple iPad app. The animated children’s story brings to life the amazing true adventures of Owney the dog and is now available on the museum’s website www.postalmuseum.si.edu/owneyebook.
The adventures of Owney, a scruffy mutt who became the unofficial Railway Post Office mascot in the 1890s, are narrated through contemporary eyes and based on primary sources with a dash of imagination. Never before has Owney’s story come to life in such an entertaining way, combining narration and a musical soundtrack featuring Adkins. Owney: Tales from the Rails was produced by Amusme, written and directed by accomplished Disney veteran Jerry Rees, complemented by world-class illustrations by Fred Cline and features music written and scored by award-winning children’s entertainment architect Stephen Michael Schwartz, with underscore composed and mixed by Chris Rhyne.
“As a father of five, history buff and animal lover, I am very proud to work with the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum to bring Owney’s fascinating story to life,” said Adkins. “The song and this story provide a fun way for families to learn together.”
The website and iPad versions of the eBook, developed in tandem with the Postal Museum’s new Owney curriculum guide (www.npm.si.edu/owneycurriculum ), provide rich learning platforms for elementary school students in geography, language arts and history. The illustrations and musical elements are particularly valuable to making the story accessible in multisensory ways for students who are challenged in reading.
“This eBook will allow families and classrooms all over the country to discover the story of Owney,” said K. Allison Wickens, director of education at the museum. “It is wonderful to see a book that combines such heart and artistry with historically accuracy. I love the animated illustrations and musical elements; they enrich the narration in ways a print book cannot.”
Owney, who is also the subject of a recently released official commemorative stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service, has been preserved and is on display at the museum. His encounters with his mail clerk friends provide an engaging and accessible window on history and the role dogs play in communities and as companions. This is the first of Owney’s published stories that is based on new discoveries in scholarship; recently uncovered articles and tags have shed new light on his relationship with postal clerks and his many destinations. From accounts of his origins to the detail on postal vehicles, uniforms and mailbags, the story conveys historical accuracy as well as emotion.
This project was made possible through the support of the Smithsonian Office of Education and Access.
About Trace Adkins
Adkins is one of country music’s most versatile and accomplished entertainers. His instantly recognizable baritone has earned him 15 Top Ten hits, and he has released gold, platinum and multiplatinum albums with total sales surpassing 10 million. He is an author and was a finalist on NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice. As an actor, he was most recently seen in The Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Phillipe. A member of the Grand Ole Opry, Adkins was raised on country and gospel and is known as a traditionalist who speaks his mind and honors the past. Beginning in March, he will perform intimate shows at theaters across the country on his “Songs & Stories Tour.”
About the National Postal Museum
The National Postal Museum is devoted to presenting the colorful and engaging history of the nation’s mail service and showcasing one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of stamps and philatelic material in the world. About Jammit:
Whether you’re an aspiring musician, an absolute beginner or a seasoned professional, Jammit is the easiest way to learn your favorite songs. Jammit delivers a stunning user experience allowing you to virtually practice and perform in the recording studio with your favorite artists. This revolutionary product utilizes the actual multi-track masters from the original recording sessions. Jammit tracks are available for guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and vocals, allowing you to isolate a specified instrument or vocal track from the rest of the band. The software provides note-for-note transcriptions (in standard notation or tablature), instant navigation to any part of the song, adjustable snap-to-grid looping and a slow playback mode (that doesn’t affect the pitch). Once you have learned the song, you can replace the original instrument recording with your own performance. Jammit is currently available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch with Mac and Windows versions coming in early2012.

Girl Scouts accept credit cards for cookies & offer locator app
The official Girls Scout Cookie Season starts January 20 and ends March, 25, 2012. During this 100th anniversary year, the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles' local troops will take their cookie sales hi-tech. For the first time in the Los Angeles County area, cookie booths will be able to accept credit cards using a device from Sage Mobile Payments. The secure credit card reader attaches to a smart phone allowing troops to accept debit and credit cards, email receipts and even refund money to customers on-the-spot right from a smart phone.
The annual Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest financial literacy program for girls in the nation. Started at a local event in Oklahoma in 1917, the program now is the leading business and entrepreneurial program run by girls, funding activities, community service and leadership projects during the year. The Cookie Program also helps girls who participate build leadership and money management skills, as well as teaches them business ethics. In 2010, over three million girls sold 198 million boxes to support Girl Scouting. To mark the Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary, a new member of the Girl Scout Cookie family has been added―Savannah Smiles, a lemony delight cookie that pays homage to Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low who was born in Savannah, Georgia.
"Many customers would love to buy Girl Scout Cookies, but many can only buy one or two boxes because they only have a certain amount of cash on them, or they have to walk by the booth entirely because they have none on hand," said David Corey, Director of Retail and Product Sales. "We have obtained 1,000 of these devices to start for the troops. We hope that this will open up Girl Scout Cookies to new customers, increase the number of boxes per customer from the loyal patrons that come out every year to the booths, and teach the girls about credit cards and the importance of good credit―because Girl Scout Cookies really is financial literacy in action."
Credit card readers aren't the only hi-tech offering that Girl Scouts are using for their cookies sales this year, there's also the Little Brownie Bakers Girl Scout Cookie Locator app. The app lets customers easily locate a cookie booth near them where they can purchase the famous cookies. The Little Brownie Bakers Girl Scout Cookie Locator app works on iPhones, BlackBerrys and Android™ phones. The app is free and available through iTunes or by simply dialing **GSCOOKIES (**472665437) from your mobile phone.

IK Multimedia is proud to announce iRig™ MIX, the first mobile mixer for iPhone, iPod touch or iPad devices. iRig MIX offers the same controls you would expect from a professional DJ mixer (crossfader, cues, EQ and volume controls, etc.) in an ultra-compact mobile mixer that can be used with a huge variety of iOS DJ mixing and other apps.
A DJ Mixer: iRig Mix allows DJs to use a traditional setup with two devices (one plugged into each of the independent channels) OR a single iOS device. For the single iOS device setup, the output of the single device is split into dual-mono and sent to the individual channels. Additionally – for the first time on any DJ mixer - it can be used for mixing any type of audio source (mp3 players, CD players, etc.) with an iOS device using automatic tempo matching and beat-syncing. Not just for DJs: iRig MIX also provides the perfect mixing solution for solo musicians or small ensembles that use one or more iOS devices to play live. It features an extra guitar/microphone input that facilitates processing with popular apps like AmpliTube and VocaLive or any other app that offers real-time audio processing. Its standard RCA connectors provide easy, direct connection to PA systems or powered speakers.
Maximum Portability: The ultra-compact size and low profile of the iRig Mix allows it to easily be carried in a regular iPad bag. Plus its low-voltage power requirements (only 5VDC) allow it to be powered not only by any regular mobile device charger but also by suitable iOS battery pack and laptop USB port for maximum mobility to mix anywhere.
iRig MIX includes 4 free apps (downloads from the iTunes app store): DJ Rig, the new professional DJ mixing app from IK, AmpliTube, the most popular iOS guitar amp and effects app, VocaLive the processing app for singers and vocalists, and GrooveMaker, the loop-based beat and groove making app.
iRig MIX features
-2 stereo inputs with gain, bass, treble and volume controls, independent cue on each channel with LED indication and channel crossfader
-Instrument/microphone/extra input with volume control can be processed by iOS apps (such as AmpliTube, VocaLive)
-Stereo output with RCA connectors, master level and LED meters
-High quality, pristine sound

Freemake Music Box app released
There's new Windows software which lets users worldwide search for music online, play tracks and create playlists. No registration, limits or geo-restrictions. Later on, Freemake Music Box will be enriched with online version and applications for iPad, iPhone, Android.
Intro video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igv0LIHE5KY
Freemake Music Box provides a fast way to find and stream legally posted online music to user's computer. The free tool delivers music search results sorted by artist, album or specific songs. Due to integrated powerful search algorythm Freemake Music Box can find a certain song using a broad word combination a user puts into a program search bar.
The application allows users to organize found music into playlists which can be edited, removed or renamed. For more convenience Freemake Music Box automatically saves playlists in the program intact so next time a user starts the program, he will find all his built playlists in the same order.
Together with search functionality, Freemake Music Box 0.9 gives control over found music and features an inbuilt music player which rewinds, loops, stops or skips selected tracks. If available, Freemake Music Box displays music clips in a separate window which can be set as hidden upon user's choice.
Vladimir Mikhailov, the Product Development Head says: "Our main idea that stands behind Freemake Music Box was to provide users with simple solution to the task where and how to find free internet music. With future versions we're going to turn online music listening into complete and perfect experience".
Freemake Music Box is in its early stage and planned to get its fully featured web based version, playlists syncronization between computers and mobile gadgets and iOS/Android applications.

Random House releases Little Red Hen app
Random House Children’s Books (www.RandomHouse.com/kids) announced today that The Little Red Hen app, the second in a growing line of Little Golden Books apps, is now available in the iTunes store. The classic Little Golden Book that adults loved as children is even sillier and more stunning in this magically interactive storybook app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is released on the heels of The Poky Little Puppy app, the first Little Golden Books app which became available in August 2011.
Beloved illustrator J. P. Miller’s graphic, colorful farm animals seem to jump right off the page—but they aren’t jumping to help the Little Red Hen plant her wheat! Young children will learn a valuable lesson about teamwork from this funny, favorite folktale. Beloved by children and adults of all ages, The Little Red Hen is an essential part of any child’s home library. The Little Red Hen app retails for $3.99.
This engaging app has been specifically designed to encourage reading and listening comprehension skills, and to reinforce core preschool-level concepts. Users can open the cover, complete with its distinctive gold spine, to reveal the whimsical story, with funny interactive illustrations on every page that will have kids giggling. Plus, the app encourages learning with the Little Golden Book Hide & Seek Challenge, which can be played at the end of each page to unlock bonus stickers. When the story is over, users can create their very own storybook scene with the stickers they collected and save their masterpiece to the device’s photo album. Making this app experience even more unique, users can personalize their app with their name and photograph on the inside cover. This beautifully crafted app makes storytime a special time that parents and children will cherish together.
Users have three options for experiencing the app. They can watch and listen as words are highlighted while the text is read aloud. They can also turn off the narration to read at their own pace (with individual words read aloud with the tap of a finger). Lastly, they can record their own voice to be played on each page.
Random House Children’s Books collaborated with leading digital media agency Smashing Ideas, which Bertelsmann AG acquired in May 2011 for its Random House, Inc., division. For more information about other apps also available from Random House Children’s Books, visit www.rhkidsapps.com.

VocaLive processor now available as app
IK Multimedia is proud to announce that VocaLive™, the first professional performing and recording vocal processor for iOS, is now available as an even more powerful iPad® app for download from the iTunes App Store.
VocaLive for iPad takes an already powerful vocal processing app that has become a favorite on the iPhone® and iPod touch® and makes it even more powerful. The iPad version adds a fourth effect slot to the signal processing chain, and two of those effect slots can hold the specific “vocal effects” compared to just one vocal effect per chain on the iPhone version. The preset browser is also available in the main window of the interface making loading and saving VocaLive presets even easier. The Favorites section has been expanded from 4 to 40 in the iPad version utilizing a new bank button. Favorites put presets right in the bottom panel on large, accessible buttons for immediate loading of the artist’s most-used settings.
For the best quality, VocaLive can be used on stage or any mobile studio location with IK’s popular iRig MIC, the first handheld, quality condenser microphone for iPad designed for all of mobile sound needs. The iRig MIC’s Dual mini-jack connector allows real-time monitoring on headphones, speakers, mixers and PAs. VocaLive and iRig MIC together let the user make professional audio recordings and performances anywhere on the iPad.
VocaLive can also be used to record quick ideas using the built-in iPad mic or with earbuds that have a built-in mic.
The included audio recorder of VocaLive for iPad can be expanded to an extremely flexible 8-track mobile studio with easy-to-use volume, pan, insert effects and two send levels for each track along with a full-featured master effects section with Reverb, Chorus and Delay for track sends, and a global parametric EQ and compressor for final mastering. You can use the handy “Apply FX” feature to subtly or radically change the sound of your recorded vocals and instruments without having to re-record them.
VocaLive provides vocalists with a suite of 12 real-time professional vocal effects along with a capable recorder for studio quality sound in a portable package. The effects can be combined into a chain of four processors and saved as presets. A collection of 50 factory Presets is included to get you up and running immediately. User presets can be stored, and their number is limited only by the available memory of the iPad itself.
VocaLive includes 5 Vocal Effects – Pitch Fix (for tuning correction or stylized quantization FX), Choir (a 3-part harmonizer), Morph (an X-Y pitch and formant shifter that changes the tonal quality of the voice from subtle deepening to radical gender bending), De-Esser, and Double (Double effect gets unlocked by registering) – along with 7 Studio Effects –Reverb, Delay, Parametric EQ, Compressor, Chorus, Phazer and Envelope Filter – that together create the perfect vocal processing solution.
VocaLive provides the ability to sing along with favorite songs from the user’s iTunes library (with a Voice Cancel feature for practicing over songs with existing vocals) and also perform vocal warm-up exercises with the included Vocal Tools. VocaLive is an incredible professional vocal effects workstation that users can take anywhere.
