Americas largest whisky celebration returns to San Francisco for the 3rd year with over 200 of the worlds rarest and most expensive whiskies from around the globe available for tasting. In addition to the over 70 whisky tables expected at WhiskyFest, the event also offers a charity whisky table featuring an array of rare bottles. This years bottles will never be repeated or available to consumers again. A small donation to charity will buy attendees a taste of one of these special whiskies, and 100% of the proceeds will go to Meals on Wheels San Francisco.
Participating distilleries in the charity table include:
Isle of Jura - Willie Tait: "I put a hogs head of Jura down on the 23rd Nov 1989, on my daughter's 13th birthday. This was my legacy for my children, as they have already taken all my money."
The Dalmore - Richard Paterson: As Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface for the very first time at 02.56 GMT on 21st July 1969, the new spirit of Dalmore down on Earth on this very same day was being transported onto the circular surface of American White Oak to begin its epic journey too.
The Balvenie - David Stewart: David now has an intimate knowledge of where his personal favorites are within the Balvenie warehouses, many of which he has been carefully nurturing for several years. David's unique bottling will be a single cask sampling drawn directly from one of this highly personal selections.
Glenfiddich - Brian Kinsman: Cask samples are retained long after the cask has long been bottled and savored. They form a historical archive of Glenfiddich's greatest and best. Brian will be selecting from these precious remnants to craft a unique and unrepeatable one-bottle "vatting" of Glenfiddich.
Buffalo Trace: Our charity Buffalo Trace bottle contains the very first sample ever drawn from our "Millennium Barrel." This barrel was filled on December 31, 1999, that's why we call it our "Millennium Barrel." It was the very last barrel that we filled on the last day of the last century.
Bruichladdich - Jim McEwan: "The title of my whisky will be "Working on a Dream" it will be a vatting of 46 years of Bruichladdich as that is the time I have been in the business. Event Details
The 3rd Annual WhiskyFest San Francisco will take place at the
San Francisco Marriott on Friday, October 16, 2009 from 6:30pm 9:30 pm. Attendees will be given the opportunity to sample over 200 of the most exclusive whiskies in the world, enjoy a gourmet buffet, and learn about whiskies from master blenders and distillery managers. Famecast has announced that Tulsa based 'Stars Go Dim' has advanced to the final round of the Samsung AT&T Summer Krush Competition. Starting today a panel of industry judges will choose a winner to perform at the Grand Finale of one of this summers most successful tours. The event will take place in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Cymbals Eat Guitars on tour Saturday
“We were at Barnes & Noble today and I was so excited to see Maximum Rock’n’Roll’s still publishing,” says Cymbals Eat Guitars bassist Neil Berenholz, his eyes widening at the very thought. “Joe was just like, ‘What’s that?’”
Welcome to one of the many contradictions that have shaped Cymbals since the spring of 2008.
First, there’s that age thing, with 32-year-old Berenholz hailing from the golden age of bedroom recordings, screen-printed T-shirts and Kinko’d zines, and the rest of the group reared on genre-jumping iPods and Web sites that can propel or pulverize an artist’s entire career with a single review.
As frontman Joseph D’Agostino—the band’s co-founder along with drummer Matthew Miller—is quick to admit, “I’ve been reading Pitchfork since I was in ninth grade.” Which was also when he discovered “Shady Lane” and started shedding the alt-rock influences that informed the cover songs he and Miller hammered out in high school.
The duo’s in college now, so it seems rather fitting that their full circle moment didn’t involve a capsule review in a print magazine; it happened when Pitchfork bestowed the band’s DIY debut, Why There Are Mountains, with a “Best New Music” stamp soon after its soft release. And we do mean soft. While many buzz-minded new artists dive straight into Brooklyn’s bustling music scene, Cymbals Eat Guitars were happy fine-tuning tracks from the outside, looking in—first in elaborate demos with the Wrens’ Charles Bissel (starting way back in the summer of 2007, before the group even had a name), and finally in a proper studio with Kyle “Slick” Johnson (Modest Mouse, The Hives).
Like many other early fans, Johnson inadvertently discovered Cymbals Eat Guitars on New York’s Lower East Side circuit, playing the kind of early sets that come with being spread between Staten Island, Manhattan and Queens.
“We didn’t know anybody in the beginning,” says D’Agostino, “So it was hard to get any shows.”
“And since no one was pursuing us,” continues Berenholz, “We had to pursue opportunities ourselves.”
On a practical level, this has led the band to physically call the country’s most popular record shops and ask them to carry Mountains’ initial pressings. Lucky for them, the record sold itself, generating interest as far away as the UK’s influential Rough Trade shop and the NME, who wrote, "Why There Are Mountains may be one of the best 'indie' (the album is self-released, so, y'know, actually 'indie') albums of the year. And with the major label skyline being obliterated like something out of Independence Day, it's time to batten down the hatches."
Hype-raking reviews aside, there’s this important detail: Why There Are Mountains is a real album, a ‘grower’ that dishes out simple pleasures with every spin. Aside from obvious recurring elements (D’Agostino’s restless yelp and sinuous riffs, Miller’s Wire-y rhythms paired with Berenholz’s melodic bass style, and the orchestral layers of keyboard), there are shades of shoegaze (the patient, feedback-bathed passages of “Share”), Motown (the buoyant bass lines of “Cold Spring”), and Technicolor-tinged pop (the breezy horns and schizo synths of “Indiana”).
Not to mention pure chaos, as explored in the gate-crashing “…And the Hazy Sea,” the tension-ratcheting “Like Blood Does,” and the final, throat-tearing moments of “Wind Phoenix (Proper Name).” As for what’s next, well, one new song already has a “lazy guitar line” that’s indebted to indie pop, floating over a disco inspired rhythm section.
“You guys are laughing,” says Berenholz (and they are), “but that’s what I’m talking about here—people bringing different influences to the table, until my chocolate’s clearly in your peanut butter.”“We aren’t shying away from the dance beats,” adds D’Agostino. “Sometimes,” says Miller, smiling, “they are appropriate.”

Sandra announced herself to the world with the release of ‘A Long Time Coming.’ This collection of 11 raw, emotionally intense but also fun and uplifting numbers was everything a great country record should be: A document of the artist’s life.
And Sandra continues the theme with her second effort which, if anything, improves and expands upon her impressive debut. It is a more thoughtful acoustic record, reflecting a different stage in its creator’s life and career. Retaining the mixture of originals and cover versions, ‘Kindred Spirits,’ as the name suggests, takes Sandra’s music to a new level of intimacy.

‘Kindred Spirits’ was released on Shady Hill Records on July 14 with a special show at Molly Malone’s in Los Angeles to celebrate the launch.
Tiesto to tour in support of new album
The new album ‘Kaleidoscope’ is Tiësto’s 4th artist recording and is expected to reflect the growing stature of a man who many consider to be the world's biggest DJ. The first single, titled ‘I Will Be Here’, was released on July 28th on Ultra Records, following the debut on BBC’s Radio 1. The video for this single was premiered exclusively on MySpace on August 7th, and recently reached in the Top 10 on the Itunes Dance Chart.
Tiësto’s career highlights to date are many, but recent exploits include a GRAMMY nod for his last artist album, ‘Elements of Life’ and headlining both Coachella and Bonnaroo Festivals. With over 1 million Facebook friends (the largest of any electronic artist on the planet), global brand sponsorships deals and sell out headline shows around the world, Tiësto is on the crest of a wave which is only set to continue. He also sits at the helm of his new label Musical Freedom, a recent development since he parted ways with the Holland-based Black Hole record label.
In addition to being a huge live draw (Tiësto recently staged his own outdoor headline show to a sold out crowd of 25,000 in London’s Victoria Park) Tiësto is also one of the world’s biggest names in remixing, with recent work completed for Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Killers, and Calvin Harris. The forthcoming long player will cement the reputation of a truly global superstar in the prime of his career.

The release of Kaleidoscope on October 20th will be supported by a worldwide tour in 2009-2010, taking the Kaleidoscope live experience out on over 175 dates, across 5 continents. North America in Sept–Nov 2009 will range from arenas and coliseums to intimate nightclubs.
More on the new record, ‘Kaleidoscope’ Tiësto: 2009 is very much about business as usual for Tiësto. After a run of four top-selling electronic artist albums, the electronic pioneer has made Kaleidoscope, an artist album in the truest sense: a stunning collection of songs written and recorded in collaboration with a variety of music talents from the worlds of dance, pop and rock: Jónsi Birgisson from Sigur Rós, Kele Okereke from Bloc Party, Nelly Furtado, Calvin Harris, Emily Haines from Metric, to name a few. Having made the DJ performance an artform, Tiësto has now made the dance album an artform.
“The starting point was to work with different artists that I liked,’ Tiësto explains, ‘it was as simple as that. ‘Sigur Rós make beautiful music. Bloc Party are fantastic and exciting and innovative. But the hardest thing initially was to get those kind of people to collaborate. They don’t work with dance artists as a rule, and especially not a dance DJ, but when we started producing these tracks, I was surprised at how well the styles work together.”
Once the artists had seen YouTube clips of Tiësto’s crowd-wowing performances, like the one of him playing in front of 250.000 people on the beach in Brazil, and once they’d heard the tracks he’d been writing, they all jumped at the chance.
First on board were Tegan and Sara, the Canadian indie duo and twin sisters. Tiësto had remixed their single “Back In Your Head”, and in June 2008 they met in Vancouver.
“I realized what great songwriters they are – I gave them a track to write on and they did an amazing job.”
In his home studio in his hometown of Breda in Holland, Tiësto set to work finessing the collaboration. “Feel It In My Bones” is the result, an epic, shimmering floorfiller.
Soon the songs were pouring in. Nelly Furtado and Tiësto started off as mutual admirers, but after making her way to Tiësto's performance at the 2008 Miami Winter Music Conference (she’d come along with her producer Timbaland) Furtado instantly agreed to be involved, and a few weeks later she gave Tiësto an idea for a song that would become, "Who Wants To Be Alone". Next to sign up was Emily Haines of Metric. She caught the thrilling Tiësto DJ Experience in Ibiza last summer and again, didn’t hesitate – “Knock You Out” is a euphoric tune that will cause floorquakes in the Balearic isles and rock festivals alike.
Securing the involvement of Kele Okereke, singer with Bloc Party, was initially more of a challenge.
“Kele’s voice is so powerful on a dance track – I did a remix for Bloc Party, of the band´s new single “One More Chance”, and it really worked. Kele was a hard man to pin down. I was supposed to sit in the studio with him in Miami during this year’s WMC, but he got sick and had to cancel last minute. But I had written this weird piano track, an offbeat thing, and he really liked it, so we hooked up in London one Sunday afternoon a few weeks later. I played him the song and he just started singing with his guitar, mumbling a little bit then suddenly words came out of his mouth… and suddenly we had a track! It was amazing to see how this guy made something cool and creative right on the spot.”
The album’s lead single, meanwhile, is “I Will Be Here”, a hook-up with huge-selling Australian band Sneaky Sound System. It’s a big, bold party tune with a stirring house-diva vocal – and a song whose infectious immediacy reflects the instinctive manner in which Tiësto wrote it: he crafted the entire production in less than week.Creating Kaleidoscope, the song that gives this colorful, shapeshifting album its entirely appropriate title, was more drawn-out. Tiësto had his heart, and his ears, set on securing the services of Sigur Rós singer Jónsi Birgisson. Tiësto flew to Chicago to track him down, then did the same in Brussels, before finally spending time in Amsterdam discussing what they might do together.
“It was a crazy idea,’ he laughs. ‘If you listen to Sigur Rós you can’t imagine any relation to Tiësto. Maybe the melancholy of it, but that’s about it. Their music is so different and I think that Jónsi is one of the most creative artists in the world. But the funny thing was, I met him at a couple of times at shows, and there’s a lot more in common than I thought – Jónsi told me he used to be a big Iron Maiden fan as well, like I was! Then I noticed that he makes a lot of dance music at home on his own. So he’s not that far away from what I do, really.”
The result is a huge, progressive trance song, soulful and uplifting.
“And Kaleidoscope is a great title for the album too. We’re mixing shapes and colors together to make something new.”
Say hello to a new Tiësto. Yes, he’s the world’s most popular DJ. But the ceaseless desire to innovate that has pushed Tiësto to the top of his game, propelled him to seek out some of the best musicians around, wherever in the world they – or he – happened to be.
“I’ve worked with these handpicked artists because they´re people I admire hugely, and because they make my music better. It’s more fulfilling for me to work like this, but a lot harder and more challenging.”
In the end, admits Tiësto, he’s unsure how people will react to Kaleidoscope.
“It is completely different to what I did before,’ he says cheerfully, adding that this is one of the reasons he´s set up an appropriately named new label, Musical Freedom, to release the album. ‘I’m introducing more and more flavors of what people know as Tiësto. This is a record you can enjoy at home, not just on the dancefloor. But what is very important to me, is that every single track on the album will work when I play out too.”

Bygones' new album getting notice
Hot on the heels of Bygones' album debut last week, the music mega-monoliths iTunes and MySpace Music have both championed the new power-duo featuring Zach Hill (drums, vocals) and Nick Reinhart (guitar, bass, vocals). iTunes featured the album on the front page of its Alternative Rock section, while MySpace showcased the band on its front page as well. Likewise, LA Weekly featured the band's deluxe vinyl edition in Chris Martins' Inches column.
Bygones is, to a certain degree, the optimal outcome of a musical marriage of Hill's band Hella and Reinhart's group Tera Melos. Considering that those bands don't need words to get their point across, logically, a project bred from their members is equally successful at rendering listeners speechless.
Bygones' debut album by- will most certainly render even the most loquacious and easily-distracted dumbfounded. It's a sinewy, wired mass of riffs and rhythms tightly wound around a uniquely pop heart. The duo fits more riffs and ideas into one song than most bands fit into a whole album. It's tireless, and nearly infinite in the sheer quantity of ideas to unravel.
Most everyone familiar with Zach Hill knows he's an equally tireless collaborator. Just take a look at his impressive Wikipedia page. Along with Hella, he also performs with Marnie Stern and in El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Team Sleep (with Chino Moreno of Deftones), Goon Moon, Crime In Choir and a host of others. In a recent news story, Pitchfork quipped of his ridiculously busy schedule, "at this rate, Hill's probably going to need to clone himself."

Background
The Los Angles-based Early Music ensemble, Angeles Consort has emerged as one of the top Baroque chamber groups in Southern California. Specializing in music of the late 16th to 18th century, Angeles Consort brings a fresh and historically informed approach to the repertoire.
Angeles Consort’s members are premier Early Music ensemble artists trained at the Southland’s leading music schools including the USC Thornton School (Janet and Leif), Cal State Northridge and Hartt School (Suzanna) and UC Santa Barbara (Jason). They bring their performing experience from renowned ensembles and festivals including Musica Angelica, Seattle Baroque, Santa Fe Pro Musica, San Francisco Consortium Antiquum, Texas Early Music Project, Camerata Pacifica, Portland Baroque, and Baroque Music Festival Corona Del Mar.
A recent transplant from the Midwest, Angie Solomon completed her Master’s degree at the University of Missouri and went on to become the soprano apprentice at the Kansas City Lyric Opera, where she debuted as Papagena in Die Zauberflöte. Angie won Grand Prize in the prestigious Naftzger Young Artist Award in 2007.
