NPR to offer Tom Waits concert via streaming and podcast
Iconic singer-songwriter Tom Waits is adding an extra stop to his sold-out “Glitter & Doom” summer tour: NPR Music’s “Live in Concert” series. NPR Music is the only place to hear a full concert from Waits’ tour, which will be available for both free streaming and podcast at www.NPR.org/music beginning tomorrow, July 29.
During the show, recorded at Atlanta’s historic Fox Theater on July 5, Waits gives a two-and-a-half hour performance, featuring songs he’s never played outside a studio. The 25-track set includes “Hold On,” “All the World is Green” and “Hoist That Rag,” followed by an encore of “Anywhere I Lay My Head.”
Waits is the latest musician to have an entire performance streamed by NPR Music, which frequently webcasts rock, pop and indie concerts as part of its extensive “Live in Concert” series. The series has featured more than 100 events to date. In March, NPR Music and Member stations traveled to Austin, TX, to live webcast and broadcast 14 concerts from the influential music festival South by Southwest, among them R.E.M., My Morning Jacket, Vampire Weekend, Bon Iver and Yo La Tengo. All SXSW performances are archived at the site. This summer, NPR Music is also webcasting and broadcasting performances from the Newport Folk Festival and JVC Jazz Festival Newport in Rhode Island.
NPR Music launched in November 2007 as a free, comprehensive music discovery destination, featuring content from NPR and 12 NPR Member public radio stations, as well as original-to-NPR Music features such as live performances, studio sessions, interviews, reviews and blogs. Specific sections of the site are dedicated to rock/pop/folk, classical, jazz/blues, world and urban music. The site culls from NPR’s and the stations’ extensive music archives to present thousands of features; its popular Concert section offers hundreds of regional and national web concerts, with more than 15 new performances added each month. NPR Music also has dozens of original music podcasts.

End o' week musings

Yeah, yeah, it's been two weeks, but I took a small and much-needed vacation. Just before I left I interviewed Eric Peterson of Testament and am now fully charged up about the Masters of Metal tour!
Last Friday I spent my afternoon soaking in my friend's pool and sipping martinis. The weather was perfect.
Saturday I
managed to sneak in my yoga class and a few errands before heading out to Pasadena Heritage's Colorado Bridge Street Party. Donning comfortable duds and my Doo Dah crown, I was flanked by Princess Valerie and Sir Ben McGinty Knight of the Arts. We wandered through the crowd, stopping for the paparazzi and other fans. We even managed to catch peformances by Aluminum Marshmallow and the Age of Aquarius Horns, Mercy and the Merkettes, Wreck N Sow, Snotty Scotty and the Hankies, Flattop Tom and more. The food was good too!

The food was good too!Sunday I headed out to Leo Carillo State Park with my friend, his son and Atticus. We enjoyed the afternoon at the beach before setting up camp. We cooked hot dogs and s'mores, took a flashlight hike and told bad ghost stories. In the morning, we were back at the beach for Frisbee fetch, plenty of splashing and some sand fort building. I always recommend this spot as a great outing, especially if you only have a couple of days to get away.
On Wednesday I went with my friends to Catalina. All that beautiful clear water and I was the only one brave enough to get my toes in the sand! We spent the bulk of our time taking a leisurely stroll through Avalon, which was refreshing.

There will be a group show by more than 25 artists, performances by the Sundowners and Almase Arabesque, plus special guest Ric Sarabia.
This weekend I have too many opportunities and not enough motivation. I want to go out and have fun, but then I kinda just want to hole up and hide from everything. Guess those afternoon naps spoiled me!
Photos we got 'em: Hope you enjoy this photo of Atticus snoozing after a long game of Frisbee fetch at Leo Carillo beach, as well as a snap of my friend Bill Cagle and his son Chris at the Football Hall of Fame (thanks for sharing Bill!). And then there's my usual cool pet photos, plus a nice fireworks shot t
aken by Valerie at the Rose Bowl on the Fourth of July.
aken by Valerie at the Rose Bowl on the Fourth of July.In rotation this week: Judas Priest, Testament, Bjork, Tom Petty, Beat Union and Fuji Minx.
Thought of the week: Take a break. I really needed a rest away from everything and I'm sure it wouldn't hurt you either. Even if it's just an afternoon lounging in your backyard (or living room), not answering the phone or e-mail and just being quiet and lazy. It will recharge your body, mind and spirit. Too busy? Consider a power nap! Even 20-45 minutes will revive you and bring back your smile.
Keep on rockin'

17 Pygmies are back for International Pop Overthrow
17 Pygmies Return for Rare Live Performance at International Pop Overthrow
WHAT: International Pop Overthrow LA
WHERE: Spaceland. 1717 Silver Lake Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90026, 323-661-4380
WHEN: Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at 8:30 p.m.
COST: $8.00/21+
International Pop Overthrow (or IPO, as its friends call it) is a pop music festival celebrating its tenth year in Los Angeles. There have also been IPO festivals held in Chicago, New York, Boston, San Francisco, Vancouver, Toronto, and in Liverpool, England (at the world-famous Cavern Club). Each International Pop Overthrow features between 100-180 of the world's best pop bands. The purpose of IPO is two-fold: to give every worthy band who'd like to play their music in a festival atmosphere the chance to do so, and to bring honest, delightful pop music the attention it so richly deserves.
Featured at the upcoming Los Angeles IPO is the legendary post-punk ensemble 17 Pygmies, featuring Jackson Del Rey (founding member of influential L.A. band Savage Republic). 17 Pygmies will be performing brand new songs for this show.
Band leader Jackson Del Rey has recently received world-wide attention for his DVD releases featuring original soundtracks for the silent films"Battleship Potemkin" and "Nosferatu." Recent press includes a six-page spread in Blow Up Magazine (Italy) and a feature in Wound Magazine (U.K.), both including in-depth interviews with Jackson where he discusses composing film scores and returning to music making after a 17-year hiatus.
17Pygmies, 17 years? If we know Jackson, this is no accident!
Of the 17 Pygmies' live show in Boston last year, Lucid Culture raved "If it's possible for a sometimes quirky, often transcendentally beautiful art-rock band to slay, The 17 Pygmies slayed, bringing to mind other great, artsy jangle bands like the Church, the Byrds or Fairport Convention. Mix in major and minor chords, verses that built slowly to towering refrains and then subsided again, the band held the audience spellbound. If the live show is any indication, the new album must be amazing. This is a band you should get to know."
Sharing the IPO bill on August 5th at Spaceland are: Kristian Hoffman, 17 Pygmies, Saucy Monky, Io Perry, Aaron David Gleason and The Holliston Stops
The 2007 releases "Ballade Of Tristram's Last Harping" and "13 Blackbirds" were well-received and left no doubt that Jackson Del Rey is back to stay. A new experimental record "Celestina" is slated to be released this fall.

Tantric moving up charts and on tour
Louisville, KY rockers TANTRIC have another Top 10 single on their hands and are approaching Top 5! "Down and Out" jumped up to #7 on the BDS Active Rock Chart this week and continues to gain momentum as the song marches forward at all the Rock Radio formats. "Down and Out" is the first single off Tantric's new record The End Begins, which is out now on Silent Majority Group/ILG. The End Begins debuted at #91 on the Billboard Top 200 in April.
A big Tantric shout out goes out to Tampa Bay Rays All-Star (and shoe in for Rookie Of The Year) Third Baseman, Evan Longoria for using "Down and Out" as his intro music each time he comes to bat at home games.
Background on Tantric:
Tantric was formed by three former members of Days Of The New: Jesse Vest, Todd Whitener, and Matt Taul, with the addition of Merge singer, Hugo Ferreira. They were signed to Maverick Records in 1999, and recorded their self-titled debut with producer Toby Wright in 2000. The record was released in February 2001 and went platinum thanks to the strength of the single "Breakdown" and the band's extensive touring with the likes of Kid Rock and Creed.
Tantric's second Wright produced album, After We Go, was released in February 2004, preceded by the single "Hey Now." Described as heavier than their first record, After We Go debuted at #56 on the Billboard 200.
Between 2005 and 2007, Vest, Whitener and Taul all decided to move on from Tantric, leaving lead singer Hugo Ferreira to start the search for a new band. Ferreira enlisted former Fuel drummer Kevin Miller, Joe Pessia (guitarist Dramagods), Erik Leonhardt (bassist), and Marcus Ratzenboeck (electric violin) as new members of the band. Shortly thereafter, Tantric announced their deal with the Silent Majority Group record label, and their new management company, JHMP.

Amy Raasch
Amy Raasch came to songwriting as a surprise. She had needed to learn a couple of basic guitar chords when cast as a folksinger in an indie film, and shocked everyone on set (including herself) by spontaneously writing her first song -- which went on to become her character's theme song. Cut to her debut album, "Love or Inertia," which made several "Best of 2007" lists, and caused Music Connection to name her "One of the Top Unsigned Artists in Los Angeles. Tune into YouTube for her current project, "52 Songs in 52 Weeks," and sign the mailing list at amyraasch.com for updates.

ABOUT SONGSALIVE!
Songsalive! is now the largest internationally based non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing, supporting, educating and promoting songwriters and composers worldwide. Celebrating over 10 years in operation, Songsalive! was founded in 1997 by two Australian artists, Gilli Moon and Roxanne Kiely, who saw the need for a support network for songwriters that could reach the 4 corners of the globe and propel songwriters to the 4 corners of the globe. After 10 years, they have done just that!
Established with now over 20 chapters around the world, and over 35 chapter coordinators, Songsalive! is run by volunteer songwriters for songwriters. Through our grassroots international efforts, we've put a stamp on what "global community" truly is and it's the type of community that is definitely needed in this ever changing music business where songwriting can be a very isolating experience and career. We provide a "home", a family, for songwriters and composers through our programs, resources, community and support, all focused on the art and business of songwriting.
Through Songsalive!, songs and songwriters can be accessed by the whole world and when the hunt is on, Songsalive! is a one-stop song shop! We run our own programs and events for songwriters, and also act as an umbrella, or a link in the chain, for songwriters to know and find out other events, resources and support centers for them, globally. Check out our events and calendar online www.songsalive.org

Grand Ole Opry to add country classics to lineup
Nashville will have a new entertainment option on Thursday nights next year when the Grand Ole Opry adds Opry Country Classics to its current line-up of Tuesday, Friday and Saturday performances.
The all-new addition to the Opry’s schedule will shine a spotlight on the classic country songs that have defined country music for generations of fans. Opry Country Classics will share country music’s colorful story through a live performance featuring country favorites performed by legends of the genre as well as talented new artists, a rousing live band, square dancing, and more. Like current Opry broadcasts, the show will be heard on 650 WSM-AM.
“We are pleased to introduce this new show that celebrates country music’s incredible legacy by showcasing its most familiar and beloved songs performed by the legends that made them
famous as well as rising stars,” said Steve Buchanan, president of the Grand Ole Opry Group. “The programming in Opry Country Classics is a perfect complement to our Grand Ole Opry performances featuring the new stars, superstars and legends of country music.”
Opry member Marty Stuart said, “I was raised in Mississippi, where we were immersed in the blues, rock n’ roll, and jazz, but it was the country music I heard that touched my heart. The sounds beaming from that 650 WSM signal seemed to beckon me to Nashville. I’m looking forward to performing some of those same great timeless songs for country fans on Thursdays next year. Let ‘er go, boys!”
“The Grand Ole Opry is one of Nashville’s signature attractions and it’s always exciting when we provide one more reason for people to visit us in Music City,” said Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. “The Thursday shows will be a great way to celebrate songs that were born in Nashville and have become world-famous standards.”
“The Grand Ole Opry has been instrumental in making Tennessee the center of the music world while positioning Nashville as ‘Music City,’” said Susan Whitaker, commissioner, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. “We look forward to spreading the word about this addition to the Grand Ole Opry’s schedule as an important part of a musical mix unmatched by any other state.”
Opry fans will be able to purchase tickets for Opry Country Classics alone or packaged alongside traditional Opry performances.
