Shakira's "Waka Waka" selected as official song for FIFA World Cup

FIFA and Sony Music Entertainment today announced that Waka Waka (This Time For Africa), written and co-produced by global superstar Shakira, has been chosen as the Official Song of the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The song will be performed by Shakira together with South African artist Freshlyground at the Closing Ceremony before the FIFA World Cup Final on July 11 in Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium. All proceeds from the song will benefit FIFA's Official Campaign of the 2010 FIFA World Cup 20 Centers for 2010.

The song combines Afro-Colombian instrumentation and rhythms with a rousing Soca beat and Southern African guitar. The chorus borrows from a favorite Cameroonian marching chant made popular by the group Golden Voices.

"The Official Song is as much awaited by the fans as the Mascot or the Logo. It is part of the identity of the world's most exciting sport's event. This song is the personification of the African rhythm and identity and sets the pace for this unique event. I am looking forward to hear the song throughout the tournament and watch it performed by Shakira and Freshlyground at the Final", said Joseph S. Blatter, FIFA President.

"I am honored that Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) was chosen to be part of the excitement and the legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup," said Shakira. "The FIFA World Cup is a miracle of global excitement, connecting every country, race, religion and condition around a single passion. It represents an event that has the power to unite and integrate, and that's what this song is about."

Shakira continued, "African music is so inspiring and is poised to take its place on the global pop culture stage. I was proud to be able to work with one of South Africa's most acclaimed groups, Freshlyground."

The song was co-produced by Shakira's frequent collaborator, John Hill.

"We are thrilled to have collaborated with Shakira on Waka Waka (This Time For Africa), especially as we feel that the song captures the spirit and energy of the African World Cup," said Zolani Mahola of Freshlyground. "We are certain the song will inspire people around the world to celebrate the gathering of nations at the place where it all started. Here in Africa!"

The song will be launched on April 28, 2010 and made available for download through digital retail outlets the week of May 11. It also will be included on Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album to be released the week of May 31 by Sony Music Entertainment. A Spanish language version of the track, Waka Waka (Esto es Africa), will be made available in certain markets.

Proceeds from the album will benefit FIFA's 20 Centers for 2010 initiative, whose aim is to achieve positive social change through football by building twenty Football for Hope centres for public health, education and football across Africa, and other African charities.

Another education focused campaign co-founded by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan and co-chaired by FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter is 1GOAL, a campaign that is championing global education. 1GOAL recently named Shakira an ambassador, adding her voice to the campaign's call that the lasting legacy of this year's FIFA World Cup be that every child can exercise their right to an education. Supported by some of the biggest names in the global football community and its governing body FIFA, Shakira will be campaigning with 1GOAL to ensure world leaders provide the funding to make universal access to education a reality for the 72 million children currently unable to go to school.

"Through 20 Centers for 2010 and 1GOAL, FIFA and its partners have committed to creating a lasting legacy of education for all - an issue that has been close to my heart for many years," says Shakira.

In addition to her performance at the final match, Shakira will be one of the headline performers at the official FIFA World Cup Kick-off Celebration Concert on June 10, broadcast from Orlando Stadium in Soweto/Johannesburg South Africa.

The video for Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) will be available in mid-May in standard definition as well as in 3D.

LA County Art Intership Program offers positions for college students

Summer job opportunities for 74 college students are now available through the L.A. County Arts Internship Program. Descriptions of and contacts for the internship positions are posted on the Arts Commission’s Web site. Go to www.lacountyarts.org, click on “Internships,” then “2010 Internship Positions.” Interested students should act as soon as positions are posted as there is stiff competition for a limited number of internships. Students apply directly to the organization offering the internship, not the Arts Commission. The organizations will want to move as fast as possible so their interns can start by May 31.

Graduating seniors who complete their undergraduate degrees by September 1, 2010 are eligible, as well as undergraduates. Applicants must have completed at least one semester of college by June 2010 and be currently enrolled (full-time) in a community college or a four-year university. Applicants must be a resident of and/or attending school in Los Angeles County.

The positions are for 10 weeks and pay $350 per week. Interns also take part in educational and arts networking activities. Through the program, interns gain real work experience to strengthen their resumes and develop business skills that can be put to use in their future careers.

To support the internships, Los Angeles County, through its Arts Commission, has given grants totaling $250,000 to 74 arts organizations throughout the County.

Through the program, interns gain a deeper understanding of the work involved in nonprofit arts administration and the role of the arts in a community and develop business skills that can be put to use in their future careers. Internship host organizations help mold and shape potential new arts leaders who may go on to hold positions on staffs, boards or as volunteers.

Opry's 85th birthday to feature all-star guitar jam

Grand Ole Opry superstars Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, Ricky Skaggs, and Steve Wariner are picking up their guitars and hitting the Opry stage Tues., May 25 to officially launch a months-long celebration of the Opry’s 85th birthday with an all-star guitar jam. As a part of the night’s Tuesday Night Opry, each Opry member will take the stage individually followed by a guitar jam finale featuring the group’s take on some of the most popular songs in Opry history.

The four artists-- each known as a million-selling recording artist as well as an impeccable musician-- have together amassed more than 75 Country Music Association and Grammy® Awards.

The night will light the fuse on a celebration to continue throughout the year as the show that made country music famous celebrates its 85th birthday with country music’s most popular artists and biggest fans.

Among the highlights of the celebration launching May 25:

Guitar Greetings: Two new 20-foot, 3,000-pound steel and aluminum Opry 85th guitars will be unveiled outside the Grand Ole Opry House, officially welcoming visitors to the Opry party. Both fans and superstars will also be invited to sign other oversized guitars on display throughout the landmark birthday year, and larger than life Opry 85th décor featuring Opry members including Trace Adkins, Charlie Daniels, Loretta Lynn, and others will cover much of the front façade of the Grand Ole Opry House.

Star-Packed Shows: Opry performances are scheduled for up to four days a week this summer (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) with upcoming performances by Lady Antebellum, Oak Ridge Boys, Charley Pride, Josh Turner, and more. Opry Country Classics runs Thursdays through June 17 and again this fall at the historic Ryman Auditorium, and HEE HAW alum Mike Snider honors the Opry’s rich country comedy traditions in Pickin’ & Grinnin’: A Grand Ole Comedy Revue on select dates June through October in Studio A at the Opry House. Meanwhile, the songs of one of the Opry’s most enduring legends, Patsy Cline, are set to take center stage at the Ryman this summer in the return of Always…Patsy Cline.

In Pictures: A gallery showcasing some of the Opry’s most memorable moments captured by the Opry’s official photographer for over a decade, Chris Hollo, as well as past staff photographer Les Leverett is one of three new exhibits set to open in celebration of the Opry’s 85th in the Grand Ole Opry Museum, located steps away from the Opry House. Other exhibits will spotlight the Opry in the first decade of the new millennium, including artifacts from Martina McBride, Montgomery Gentry, Carrie Underwood, and more; a third salutes late Opry icon Porter Wagoner.

Be Our Guest: The Opry has for years welcomed famous fans from all walks of life to its stage, including every U.S. President from Richard Nixon through George W. Bush. Recent guests including Garrison Keillor and Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts and have played a part in the Opry by acting as Opry guest announcers. In celebration of the Opry’s 85th, a who’s-who of celebrities will appear as guest announcers while the show will also launch an “I’m With The Band” series. “I’m With The Band” will invite personalities from outside the country world who have an interest in music to sit in with the Opry band for a song on country music’s most revered stage.

Stars’ Guitars: As country music devotees descend on Nashville for CMA Music Fest, a June 11 Guitars of the Stars Benefit Auction will give fans the unique opportunity to bid on acoustic guitars decorated by some of country music’s most popular stars including award-winners Luke Bryan, The Judds, and Darius Rucker. Proceeds will benefit the Opry Trust Fund, which has for more than 40 years assisted members of the country music community in need.

Birthday Bash: The Opry’s 85th Birthday Bash weekend featuring Opry Birthday Shows and an Opry Plaza Birthday Party is scheduled for Oct. 8 – 9.

To plan an Opry visit or book an Opry 85th vacation package, call (800) SEE-OPRY or log on to opry.com. Schedules of events, Opry 85th sweepstakes, and more will be continuously updated throughout the celebration at opry.com/85. The Grand Ole Opry® is presented by Humana®.

Chicago launches contest to help the American Cancer Society

As part of its 2010 nationwide concert tour kicking off this spring, legendary “rock and roll band with horns” Chicago is joining forces with the American Cancer Society to create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. The band and the Society, which last year declared itself The Official Sponsor Of Birthdays®, will offer fans the experience of a lifetime, and the chance to contribute to the fight against breast cancer with the Sing With Chicago promotion.

Fans in every city where the band is performing will be able to bid on a package that includes two premium tickets, backstage passes, and the opportunity to sing the worldwide, #1 hit song "If You Leave Me Now" onstage with the band during the concert.

Chicago and the Society are making this exciting experience available in dozens of U.S. cities through the end of the year using an online auction on Mission Fish, the charitable arm of E-bay. All proceeds will directly aid the Society's fight against breast cancer. See the auction page here:
http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=americancancersociety

While only one fan can win each auction, all fans at Chicago concerts will have an opportunity to help save lives and support the breast cancer fight by making a one-time donation to the American Cancer Society by texting the word Chicago to 20222.

Fans will also be encouraged to join the growing movement for more birthdays at www.morebirthdays.com.

“We are so grateful to be working with Chicago and thrilled to give Chicago fans across the country such a fun and exciting opportunity to support the American Cancer Society and our work in breast cancer” said Terry Music, chief mission delivery officer, American Cancer Society and herself a breast cancer survivor. “A rock concert is a giant celebration, which makes this tour a great way to introduce fans to the movement for more birthdays.”

"Chicago is joining forces with the American Cancer Society to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer and save lives. Because so many of our fans are women (and the men who love them), many of whom feel passionately about breast cancer, we are looking forward to working with the ACS on our tour dates this year,” said the band. “We would love to celebrate a world with more birthdays!"

Everyone has a favorite Chicago song. Some of their many hits include: “If You Leave Me Now”, “Make Me Smile”, “25 or 6 to 4”, “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”, “Saturday In The Park”, “Just You 'N Me,” “Wishing You Were Here”, “Hard To Say I'm Sorry”, “Hard Habit To Break”, “You're The Inspiration” - and so many more.

Lifetime achievements include a Grammy Award, multiple American Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Chicago street dedicated in their honor, and keys to and proclamations from an impressive list of US cities. Record sales top the 100,000,000 mark, and include 21 Top 10 singles, 5 consecutive Number One albums, 11 Number One singles and 5 Gold singles. An incredible 25 of their 32 albums have been certified platinum, and the band has a total of 47 gold and platinum awards. Chicago is the first American rock band to chart Top 40 albums in five decades. In Billboard Magazine's recent list of Top 100 artists of all time, Chicago came in at #13, the highest charting American band.

The line-up on tour will include original band members Robert Lamm on keyboards, vocals, Lee Loughnane on trumpet, James Pankow on trombone and Walt Parazaider on woodwinds, as well as Jason Scheff on bass, vocals, Tris Imboden on drums, Keith Howland on guitar, Lou Pardini on keyboards, vocals and Drew Hester on percussion.

For more on the tour, visit www.chicagotheband.com.

Chicago has generously supported other charitable causes in the past, donating a portion of ticket sales to support finding a cure for a fatal children's disease and an organization that serves children and adults with special needs. On the summer tour dates, The Doobie Brothers, one of America's most iconic and treasured popular bands, who have racked up countless diamond, platinum and gold records, multiple Grammy Awards and continuously sold-out concerts in the course of their extraordinary career, will be on the bill. They will also release a new album of original material in 2010, produced by the legendary Ted Templeman. Doobie Brothers are comprised of founding members and principal songwriters Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons with longtime Doobies guitar wizard John McFee and original drummer Michael Hossack rounding out the core lineup. Chicago and the Doobie Brothers will perform a set together at the end of each of these summer shows.

About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation's largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.

To learn more about us or to get help, call us any time, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.

All Time Low documentary due out May 25

This is a story of a band who never set out to change the world....and still hasn't. Take a journey with All Time Low as they travel America with one mission... to tell as many dick jokes as possible, with lots of laughs, a little bit of crying, and nude scene after nude scene after nude scene. All Time Low stars in a film so massive that no theater can contain it. It’s a documentary, it’s a live performance, and it’s more than you have ever wanted to know.

Arriving May 25th in stores and online everywhere, this live performance and on-the-road documentary was filmed and recorded during All Time Low's Fall 2009 headlining tour and is full of all new footage... plus some old stuff from the early years that we know you have never seen before. The documentary is full of exactly what you would expect from over two months of hanging out with All Time Low, so if you don't like bad words, less than professional golf outings, and "sexy" band shower scenes you may want to turn back now.

The live performance was filmed and recorded at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on December 4, 2009 where the band played fan favorites like "Jasey Rae", "Dear Maria, Count Me In" and newer cuts "Weightless" and "Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don't)" alongside a massive amounts of lights, fans, bras, and even more dick jokes.

In addition to the standard CD/DVD (that is anything but standard), we have created a very special deluxe version that is available in very limited quantitiy. The deluxe includes a 32 page hard cover book containing some amazing live photos and behind the scenes shots that you will not see anywhere else. Also get a bonus DVD disc including the director's cut Documentary and lots of other awesome extras.
