Thelonious Dub is an instrumental trio founded by guitarist Joe Bartone in 2007. They play a unique mix of improvised jazz, dub reggae and jam band styles or as they like to joke "a complete misunderstanding of both jazz and reggae.” Joe is supported by John von Seggern on bass and Sean Rainey on drums. In December, Rainey will be away from the 14th and his time keeping duties will be taken on by Allan Cook who has performed with Dave Holland, Lee Konitz, John Abercrombie and many others.
Most of Thelonious Dub’s live performance features classic tunes by Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and Charles Mingus, along with witty pop and rock covers (Coldplay’s “Clocks”, “Money” by Pink Floyd, among others) and originals. Bartone notes, “my unorthodox style is a direct result of my limitations and the many ways I strove to compensate for those shortcomings. I am proof that art is freedom through creation and it is the process that gives my life meaning.”
Thelonious Dub was recently featured in the Pasadena Star News and several other papers in the San Gabriel Valley. Check out the story at http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/ci_10680239.
Modeled after the "Modern Lounge" sound, T-Dub draws from groups and artists like Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation and Sly & Robbie. To pursue this sound, Thelonious Dub adds electric sitar and a large array of guitar effects.
Since their founding in 2007 the band has played over 100 shows at a vast range of venues around Los Angeles including their weekly residency at the Brenart Restaurant and Wine Bar in Pasadena. In December they will perform at their typical wide variety of rooms and events, see below or at http://www.myspace.com/theloniousdub for their schedule:
