Jason Spooner Trio on tour

The ingredients behind northern New England’s Jason Spooner Trio read like a bizarre musical science experiment. Start with a prolific, singer/songwriter (Jason Spooner) with heavy roots, folk and blues influences. Then mix in a classically trained bassist (Adam Frederick) with foundations in jazz and a knack for serious pocket grooves. Lastly, shake things up with a rock-solid drummer (Reed Chambers) with deep-seeded roots in funk, soul and reggae and you’ve begun to scratch the surface of this unique, energetic band.

Jason and the trio have just returned from a very successful showing at the 2009 South By Southwest festival in Austin, TX. The band is gearing up for a busy summer of club dates and festivals featuring headliners such as Amos Lee, Chris Isaac, The Wallflowers and Guster.

Their new live album entitled Live on The Loft was recorded at XM Studios in Washington, DC. Originally slated for a limited release on satellite radio, the band and the XM staff decided it sounded like a record and the decision was made to release it as the band’s first live album.

The album was officially released in April of 2009. Jason has been lauded with many awards including winning the 2007 Mountain Stage New Song Contest and selection as a finalist in Starbucks 2007 Music Makers and in the 2004 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Folk festival stalwarts at Kerrville and Falcon Ridge folk festivals have also recognized his singular talent over the past few years by honoring him with emerging artist awards. Recently he and his band have shared the stage with Brandi Carlile, Michelle Shocked and and performed at the lauded Kerrville Folk Festival. His current album The Flame You Follow has been in rotation on over 35 Triple A radio stations as well as on XM and Sirius satellite radio.

The band’s sound is a unique blend of roots, folk and blues focused around Jason’s tastefully rhythmic flat-picking style and the band’s air-tight foundation. With laid-back vocals and an emotive, image-rich writing style all his own, Jason is a songwriter to watch. Think J.J. Cale meets Neil Young meets G. Love with dashes of Paul Simon and Kelly Joe Phelps. Sound bizarre? Hearing is believing.
