Pasadena Heritage Celebrates Preservation Month in May
Pasadena Heritage Presents: Ain, Johnson & Day: A Mid-Century Vision
Special Guest Lecture, Book-signing & Architectural Tour
Sunday, May 31, 2009, 1 -5 pm
On May 31, 2009, Pasadena Heritage will present a lecture and tour exploring the significant mid-century design innovations of Gregory Ain and his partners Joe Johnson and Alfred Day. Dedicated to the cause of affordable housing for the masses, Ain sought to address “the common architectural problems of common people.” His masterful application of modernist aesthetics to tract housing is apparent at projects such as the Park Planned Homes of 1947-48.
The event will begin with a lecture and booksigning by Professor Anthony Denzer, author of the groundbreaking new book Gregory Ain: The Modern House as Social Commentary. The lecture will be held in the auditorium of Caltech’s newly opened Cahill Center building, designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Thom Mayne.
Following the lecture, a drive-yourself tour will visit two Park Planned Homes interiors, which reveal Ain’s genius for new formulations of space and feature twenty-four foot walls of glass overlooking private gardens. In comparision with this planned community, the tour will also visit the residence that Ain’s partner Joe Johnson designed in 1947 for his own family on the edge of the Arroyo Seco.
Tickets on sale May 5. Ticket prices: $25/$30.
Tickets can be purchased by calling Pasadena Heritage at (626) 441-6333 or online at www.pasadenaheritage.org. Space is limited.
