Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad adds new interactive experiences
The Museum of Making Music – a cultural destination dedicated to exploring the enduring relationship between people, instruments and the music we make – is undergoing a significant renovation to give visitors new interactive musical experiences at its Carlsbad location.
This June the Museum will close its doors to complete work on important enhancements to its galleries, which explore the multifaceted history of American music and instrument making from the late 19th century to present day. Aimed at increasing visitors’ engagement with musical instruments and creating interactive learning experiences, the Museum will unveil the new designs at a reopening celebration on Aug. 20, 2011.
“Since opening in 2000, the Museum has exposed visitors to the history of music through educational programs, exhibitions and our live performance series,” said Carolyn Grant, executive director at the Museum of Making Music. “This renovation allows us to further expand the popular interactive portion of our Museum’s vision, giving visitors a chance to pick up instruments and explore their own musicality during their visit.”
Four of the Museum’s galleries, which showcase more than a century of musical innovations, will be enhanced to highlight a “breakthrough” instrument from each era and create new awareness of musical instrument innovation.
The Museum’s fifth gallery will be fully renovated, offering nearly 1,100 square feet of updated stories of instrument innovation and usage as well as newly developed, state-of-the-art interactive displays. Visitors will be invited to sample music from around the world and play a variety of instruments independently or with their friends and family. Interactive instruments have been provided by Taylor Guitars, Korg, Kurzeil, Moog, The Martin Guitar Company, Deering Banjos, Rickenbacker International Corporation, Alternate Mode, and many more.
The project, designed by Academy Studios of Novato, Calif., will also include the creation of a new space to showcase temporary exhibits, which the Museum self-curates.
“This important renovation project will further the Museum’s mission to get people excited about the rich history of musical instruments and encourage family and friends to explore music making,” said Dean Weldon, president and CEO of Academy Studios. “Through ‘hands-on’ engagement, visitors to the Museum of Making Music will develop a personal connection to music and become participants, members, Museum supporters, active music makers, concert goers and life-long learners.”
For more information on the renovation project at the Museum of Making Music, visit www.MuseumofMakingMusic.org.

Devo honored with installation at MOCA and launches remix contest
As part of its new exhibition The Artist’s Museum — a showcase of work by more than 140 artists who have helped shape the artistic dialogue in Los Angeles over the past 30 years—The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), will honor Devo with an installation devoted to the beloved New Wave pioneers.
The installation, which will be unveiled to the public on Oct 31, consists of a wall of roughly 400 Devo’s iconic red energy domes, as well as photos and video of the band. The exhibition represents the diversity and uniqueness of the Los Angeles community, and highlights important works from legendary L.A. artists who remain vital and influential alongside those emerging from renowned local art schools, visionary artists associated with various street cultures and subcultures, and crossover artists connected to performance, music, and film.
The Artist’s Museum will be on view at MOCA Grand Avenue and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA through Jan 31, 2011.
In other exciting Devo news, Beatport is excited to announce that our new remix contest is with none other than with post-punk, electronic-music pioneers Devo!
In keeping with the title of the band’s latest album, Something For Everyone, Devo is offering up the parts from their ‘80s hit “Freedom Of Choice” as well as their newest track, “What We Do” for your reinterpretation.
Since the early days of MTV, when the band’s “Whip It” was on heavy rotation, Devo have been at the vanguard of subversive, surrealist art-pop; their music is cited as an influence by many contemporary electronic-music producers.
Adam Freeland puts it bluntly: “If you think they aren’t relevant to today’s music, then burn your LCD records, your Fall records, your Layo & Bushwacka! records, and my artist albums, amongst many others, as they simply wouldn’t sound like they do without them.”
“They’re as important as David Bowie, Run DMC, The Fall or The Stooges, if not more so,” claims Pat Pardy of Evil Nine.
Layo, of Layo & Bushwacka!—who famously sampled Devo’s “Mongoloid” for their hit “Love Story"—says, “I was first into Devo as a teenager. Matt (Bushwacka!) always laughs at me when I mention the bands I loved growing up: I was into the new wave of punk and the German experimental bands like Can. My original favourite from Devo was always Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo! I could never get away from the bass of “Mongoloid,” and then one day we had an idea about that bass with an old ragtime style piano following it. And the rest, as they say...”
The rest is history, of course, and this is your chance to become part of that legacy. Read on to find out how to enter.
The Opportunity:
On Oct 26, 2010, Beatport will make available for download the stems of “Freedom Of Choice” a favorite of many Devo fans, and “What We Do”, from the band’s latest album, SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY. From then producers may remix one or both tracks, and upload their finished remix(es) to Beatportal for the voting round.
The Prizes:
The finalists of both “Freedom Of Choice” and “What We Do” remix entries will be divided into 2 categories; 10 users voted (based on number of spins) and 10 editorial winners (picked by Beatport’s editorial team). Each category will then be submitted to Devo and Warner Brothers where they will select the winner for each track to receive:
1 - $250 Beatport gift card 1 - Native Instruments Maschine 1 - V-MODA Crossfade LP Headphones 1 - Devo Live Tour Gear Bundle
The highest spun remix entry for each track will also receive 1 - $50 Beatport gift card.
The Stages:
1. October 26th - November 15th: Download phase - The remix parts of “Freedom Of Choice” and/or “What We Do”. You may purchase the stems bundled at $3.99 USD each.
2. November 2nd - November 15th: Upload/Submission phase - Upload your remix to Beatportal to www.beatportal.com/remix. During this phase the entries can be listened to, but not voted for.
3. November 16th - November 30th: Voting phase - The public votes for their favorite remixes by “spinning” them.
After a period of deliberation, the winner will be announced on or around Dec 21, 2010.

Michael Jackson attire on exhibit at the Autry
Autry National Center
4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027
323.667.2000, www.theAutry.org
The Autry National Center presents an installation of Western fashion worn by one of the most successful and popular entertainers in history, pop icon Michael Jackson. His contributions to music, dance, and fashion made him a global icon for over four decades. In the world of style, his willingness to try different patterns and designs made Jackson truly unique. While many of his influences—from military jackets to aviator sunglasses—are readily apparent, his frequent use of Western wear has gone virtually unnoticed. The new installation at the Autry will reflect Jackson’s ability to use classic Western styles in distinctive ways.
“The Autry is thrilled to showcase global superstar Michael Jackson in a whole new light, with items on loan from the collection of Tompkins/Bush. Through his Western-inspired fashion, the public will be able to draw connections between the past and the present as they walk through our Imagination Gallery. We hope this installation and our other exhibitions inspire people of all ages to feel that the West belongs to everyone—from cowboys and Native Americans to women and pop icons,” said John L. Gray, Autry President and CEO.
Surrounded by objects belonging to the likes of the Cisco Kid, the Lone Ranger, John Wayne, and Clint Eastwood in the Autry’s Imagination Gallery, a three-sided case with full-size mannequins will display outfits that Jackson wore in the 1970s and ’90s, as well as the famous white glove—all courtesy of his longtime costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush.
Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush fondly recall, “Michael Jackson’s request, with everything we made for him, was always the same . . . ‘Dennis, Bush, this has to be museum-quality. This needs to be able to be displayed in a museum. . . . It has to be detailed.’ When the Autry approached us in early 2009, about contributing to this exhibit, we discussed it with Michael and he was excited and humbled by the idea. It is our honor and privilege to be able to share with the world a glimpse into the artistic collaboration we were so fortunate to have had with Michael Jackson for almost 25 years and contribute to furthering his incredible legacy for generations to come.”
Curated by Jeffrey Richardson, the Autry’s Associate Curator of Film and Popular Culture, the exhibit will highlight Jackson’s early career by featuring a sparkling trimmed and rhinestone cowboy outfit worn on the television variety show The Jacksons on March 2, 1977. The costume was clearly influenced by Western entertainers like Roy Rogers and Rex Allen. In a video accompanying the display, visitors will be able to see Jackson’s performance of the hit songs “Cisco Kid” and “I Shot the Sheriff” on a set decorated to look like a Western saloon.
The display case will also examine Jackson’s use of Western wear in the latter part of his career. As a solo artist, Jackson often wore a classic bib-front shirt, just like John Wayne and many other screen cowboys throughout the twentieth century. Following in the tradition of flashier stars like Tom Mix and Gene Autry, Jackson had shirts adorned with intricate designs and opulent buttons.
On November 17, 1996, while promoting the HIStory World Tour in Sydney, Australia, Jackson wore a red bib-front shirt with black trim. The shirt was designed by costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, who are responsible for many of the Western influences found in Jackson’s clothing. Jackson complemented the shirt with a pair of black Levi 501 jeans (with embellishments by Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush), another Western essential. The black fedora and aviator sunglasses he wore with the outfit will also be on exhibit, along with Tompkins and Bush’s original sketch of the shirt.
At the center of the installation, the most iconic Jackson clothing accessory, also made by Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush —a single white glove—will be displayed. Western entertainers throughout history have worn gauntlets or gloves. Gauntlets originally had a practical purpose on the American frontier, but like the majority of Western wear, entertainers customized their gloves with flashy beads and intricate designs merely for show. Following in this tradition, Jackson started wearing one glove in the mid-1970s—and, most notably, at the historic Motown 25 performance in Pasadena, California, in 1983. It quickly became a cultural phenomenon, and Jackson ultimately donned a variety of gloves throughout his career. The glove he wore on the March 2002 cover of Vibe magazine will be on display in a special section of the exhibit. It was the last time he was professionally photographed wearing his trademark accessory.
Other items on display will include a Western-style belt and buckle that Jackson wore on several occasions, most noticeably for the “Beat It” single record cover and promotional materials—and a pair of steel cowboy boots, designed by Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, that Jackson wore to the White House in April 1990.
Access to the installation in the Imagination Gallery is free with museum admission. The Autry Museum’s Celebration of Michael Jackson’s Birthday will take place on August 29. Visit www.TheAutry.org for details.
The Michael Jackson installation is made possible by the generosity of costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush. All of the artifacts are from their private collection. The Autry would like to thank them for their support.
About Tompkins Bush
If you ask Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush to define their craft, they will humbly tell you they design “show clothes.” But that hardly captures the tremendous impact they have had on pop culture with their show-stopping designs on some of the most famous performers of our time and their more than 25 years with Michael Jackson, the “greatest entertainer that ever lived.”
Through their boundless creativity and relentless ingenuity, the formidable team of Tompkins Bush makes show clothes like none other—clothes that are unique, work innately with the entertainer, enhance the performance, and are choreographed into every element, but never compete or upstage—and are, without a doubt, visually riveting.
Since 1985, Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush created, styled, and designed almost all of the clothing and costumes worn by Michael Jackson. He wore their masterful creations for countless concerts, video shoots, three world tours, and presidential and royal meetings, as well as appearances and photo shoots that spanned the globe and made pop culture history. The show clothes they made for Michael Jackson have been some of the most photographed in history.
Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush spent hours in rehearsal studios observing Jackson sing and dance so they could incorporate every element of his performance into their designs and see how the garment needed to move. Their design philosophy has always been firmly grounded in the belief that the clothes need to make the performance look effortless. Ultimately, the clothes were as choreographed as Michael Jackson and specifically constructed to work with each and every beat.
Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush very rarely talk about their work publicly. They knew at all times who the star was, and they never competed for that spotlight. Quietly and without fanfare, they left their indisputable mark on fashion and entertainment and made the world stop and look. As they fondly recall, “Michael Jackson was always ‘show time.’ He wanted to set the pace, not copy one.”
Most recently, in early 2009, Michael Jackson called on the artistic abilities of Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush once again, to design the costumes for “This Is It,” which would have been their fourth tour together. Tompkins/Bush have also designed show clothes, costumes, and personal wardrobes for the Jackson Brothers, Elizabeth Taylor, Britney Spears, Siegfried & Roy, *NSYNC, Denzel and Pauletta Washington, 3T, and many others. They reside in Los Angeles and continue to design for select clients.

Autry National Center acquires Roy Roger's first guitar
The Autry National Center is proud to announce the acquisition of “The King of the Cowboys,” Roy Rogers’s first guitar. This acquisition is made possible by Lora and Bob Sandroni, with additional support provided by Stuart Simon and Jo-Carole and Gary M. Zechel. The early 20th century acoustic guitar made by Aida Mandolins and Guitars was part of the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum Collection auctioned at Christie’s Auction House in New York City on July 14–15, 2010.
The guitar that started Roy Rogers’s singing career was purchased by Rogers in 1929 when he was still known as Leonard Slye. He bought his guitar for $20 at a second-hand shop in Cincinnati, Ohio, before making his way to California. The instrument and case include a small plaque that reads, “This is your life, Roy Rogers, Jan. 14, 1953 ‘Young Leonard Slye bought this guitar for $20. He learned to play it and to sing—and so became Roy Rogers, America’s most beloved cowboy star.’” The guitar was presented to Rogers on the 1953 episode of Ralph Edwards’s This Is Your Life television program.
The guitar joins other Rogers objects in the Autry’s permanent collection. These include the newly acquired Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Archive, which contains key artifacts representing the duo’s entertainment career of more than 50 years. These items will be catalogued, conserved, and digitized, allowing greater access to researchers and the general public through exhibitions and the Autry’s two online databases: the library catalog, and Collections Online, the digital database.
“The Autry is proud to add this important guitar, which sparked the illustrious career of Roy Rogers, to our collection. We take great pride in being the new home of the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Archive, and are reaching out to their fans to help us preserve this collection,” said John Gray, President and CEO of the Autry.
Contributions can be sent to Karen Fisher at the Autry National Center, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027. She may also be reached at 323.667.2000, ext. 243, and kfisher@theautry.org.
Artifacts relating to Roy and Dale from the museum’s permanent collection are currently on display in the Imagination Gallery and the museum lobby. The highlight of the collection is the one-of-a-kind plastic saddle Roy rode aboard his horse, Trigger, as Marshal of the 1952 Tournament of Roses Parade. The saddle is presently on display along with Roy’s parade ribbons in the museum lobby in conjunction with the release of the United States Postal Service’s “Cowboys of the Silver Screen” stamp series. Over the next few years, the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Archive will be used to help develop the Golden Age of Television Westerns exhibition at the Autry, which will examine the cultural and social history of television Westerns.

The Dear Hunter coming to Hollywood with Coheed & Cambria in August
THE DEAR HUNTER--Casey Crescenzo (singer/pianist/guitarist/lyricist/producer), brother Nick Crescenzo (drums), Erick Serna (guitars) and Josh Rheault (keyboards/guitars)—are kicking off a three week trek with Coheed & Cambria at the Hollywood Palladium on Thursday, August 12. Before that, they’ll also be in San Bernardino on Sunday, August 1 at Stingers with Circa Survive.
As the band begins to plot out ideas for their next album, ACT IV (the follow-up to 2009’s critically acclaimed ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH), they’ve already started production on a collection of 9 EPs entitled COLOR SPECTRUM, which will be released early next year. The exact release date will be announced in the coming months. Since the songs of COLOR SPECTRUM aren’t quite ready for their fans’ ears just yet, THE DEAR HUNTER will continue to perform classics from ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH, ACT II: THE MEANING OF, & ALL THINGS REGARDING MS. LEADING and ACT I: THE LAKE SOUTH, THE RIVER NORTH at their shows with Coheed & Cambria.
Work on the EPs started when THE DEAR HUNTER’s headlining tour concluded in April, which will be comprised of songs inspired by the colors of the spectrum, specifically RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO and VIOLET, with WHITE and BLACK being included as bookends.
“A few years ago I was thinking of what we would do when we were finished with the ACT records,” explains Casey Crescenzo. “The thought just kind of happened, and the idea for the project quickly developed. For the longest time, the idea was just to keep it a project that the band would complete on time off. After the initial shock of being an independent band again, we found comfort in the idea that we were now free to tackle any project we saw fit. Knowing that no label would back a project like this, we saw no better time than the present to approach this lingering idea.”
He continues: “At its heart, this project is about our growth as songwriters and musicians, and the idea has always been to challenge ourselves. We have never limited ourselves to a single genre, and this idea gave us a perfect opportunity to explore all of our influences and express ourselves with no restrictions. With the COLOR SPECTRUM EPs, we hope to faithfully represent our interpretations of the color spectrum on a sonic and emotional level.”

Roland and the Grammy Museum bring "Instruments of Art" to Westfield Topanga
Roland Corporation U.S. and The GRAMMY Museum are proud to announce Instruments of Art, a traveling exhibit debuting at Westfield Topanga, one of Los Angeles’ most popular shopping destinations. The one-of-a-kind, 1,000 square-foot exhibit features an interactive display of Roland’s state-of-the-art electronic musical instruments, alongside 33 never-before-displayed photographs of artist performances at The GRAMMY Museum.
During the exhibit’s run, Westfield Topanga will also host family programs, live performances, and Q&A sessions with the photographers. From 4-7pm on July 10, 17, and 24, 2010, the Roland Battery Band will perform, showing off the mobility of the company’s latest lineup of battery-powered professional instruments and amplifiers. Roland Percussion Specialists will also offer free one-minute drum lessons on these dates from 2-4pm.
The interactive portion of Instruments of Art recreates Roland LIVE, a permanent exhibit at The GRAMMY Museum in downtown Los Angeles. In both locations, visitors can try their hand at playing a variety of Roland’s innovative electronic instruments, inviting them to explore and think critically about how today’s music is crafted. Instruments on display at Westfield Topanga include the AX-SYNTH Shoulder Synthesizer, the HPD-10 HandSonic® Percussion Pad, HD-1 V-Drums® Lite, SP-404SX Sampler, as well as BOSS guitar effects and BOSS VE-20 Vocal Performer.

Artist Lauren Voiers commissioned for John Lennon monument
American art sensation, 19 year-old Lauren Voiers is creating a monument to world icon John Lennon and his message of peace.
Commissioned by California-based organisation the Global Peace Initiative, the monument will be presented to the world’s leading permanent Beatles-themed visitor attraction, the Beatles Story (www.beatlesstory.com) in Liverpool, UK, and will be sited in a significant position within the city.
John’s son Julian Lennon will unveil the monument to the world at a high profile ceremony in October 2010, the month his father would have turned 70. US artist Lauren Voiers has been asked by Julian to incorporate, within the monument’s design, a white feather – which to Julian is a symbol of both his father's spirit and of peace.
This is the second in a series of monuments commissioned by Global Peace Initiative. Their aim is to place a peace monument in each of the world's seven continents and spread artistic symbols of peace across the globe. The first monument was presented to the President of Singapore on behalf of the people of Asia in 2005.
Liverpool, UK has been chosen as the European location for this second monument, dedicated to the spirit of one of the city’s most famous sons. The monument will act as a place of pilgrimage for people wishing to remember one of the world’s most influential icons, complementing the Strawberry Fields memorial in New York.
Lauren’s monument, which she entitled ‘Peace & Harmony’, will be unveiled in Liverpool, UK during the city’s John Lennon Tribute Season which will take place from 9 October – 9 December 2010. This extensive season of cultural events will celebrate what would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday and marks the 30th anniversary of his untimely death. The unveiling of the monument will generate enormous interest from around the world with European dignitaries and celebrities being invited to the ceremony.
Artist Lauren Voiers said, “I’m thrilled to have been asked to create a Global Peace Initiative monument dedicated to John Lennon. My art has always been influenced by the ideals of peace and harmony and it is a great honour to spread this message across Europe through my sculpture. The fact it will be located in Liverpool, the home town of such a music legend, is phenomenal.”
Jerry Goldman, Managing Director of the Beatles Story said, “The UK has long needed a monument to John Lennon which acts as a counter balance to the Strawberry Fields memorial in New York’s Central Park. We’re incredibly excited about Global Peace Initiative’s gift to the city. It is the perfect opportunity for us to provide the world with a permanent reminder of John Lennon in the city where his spirit was created.”
Ben Valenty, Director of Global Peace Initiative said, “We have been searching for an appropriate location for the second Global Peace monument for sometime. The creativity and history that surrounds Liverpool make it an ideal destination for Europe’s art piece. Lauren’s work is exceptional and we’re very excited that this commission is underway.”
Patricia Yates, Director of Strategy and Communications, VisitBritain said, “We expect this monument to attract hundreds of thousands of Lennon fans from all around the world to visit Liverpool – one of the UK’s most exciting destinations.”
Mike Storey, Lord Mayor of Liverpool said, “We are very proud that Global Peace Initiative has chosen to site the European monument in our city and to celebrate the desire for peace of one of our most famous sons. Liverpool should rightly be the focal point for Lennon fans throughout the world.”

White Feather Symbol
The John Lennon Peace Monument will include the symbol of a white feather within its design on the request of John’s son Julian Lennon.
As Julian Lennon explains: “One of the things my father said to me was that should he pass away, if there was some way of letting me know he was going to be ok, it was by, in some shape or form, presenting me with a white feather.”
Then, around ten years ago while Julian was on tour in Australia, a group of Aborigines presented him with a white feather, asking him to be the voice for their plight. This episode motivated Julian to set up The White Feather Foundation, a newly founded charity that raises funds to improve the lives of others and spread a message of peace.
Global Peace Initiative and Lauren Voiers
The Global Peace Initiative’s purpose is to complete a seven-continent art project designed to promote peace through art. The project calls for young artists to create seven large sculptural monuments (one for each continent) to be given as gifts of peace to various nations around the globe. In 2003 the Global Peace Initiative commissioned Alexandra Nechita to create the first Global Peace Initiative monument. In 2005 Nechita’s monument, aptly named ‘Let there be Peace’, was dedicated by the Global Peace Initiative, the artist and Singapore’s President Nathan, who accepted on behalf of the people of Asia.
Global Peace Initiative commissioned Cleveland, Ohio-born teen artist Lauren Voiers to create the second monument due to her highly acclaimed peace paintings. Discovered by international art expert Ben Valenty at just 17, Lauren’s paintings are exhibited at the Wentworth Gallery, America’s largest art distributor and sell for up to $25k.

Noveau Series Guitar collection to show at NAMM Museum in San Diego
ArtofMusicInstruments.com announced today the release of The Nouveau Series Guitar collection, which will be featured in the National Association of Music Merchants' Making Music Museum in San Diego, California in autumn 2010. Thirteen truly unique instruments blending fine art and quality lutherie. Original art by Louis Comfort Tiffany (Tiffany art glass), Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha, Lucien Pissaro, Emile Galle' and other historically significant artists of the Art Nouveau period have been incorporated into Michael Spalt's extraordinary collaged resin-topped bodies.
"The beauty of developing curves, textures, and colorsinviting the play of light, alive with intrigue, artful themes and some of the most unique weddings of architecture and style found anywhere, The Nouveau Series is superb in every sense," says Paul Schmidt, internationally known author and Art of Music Instruments founder.
In addition to the original Art Nouveau art, the collaged resin-topped bodies, Klein's eloquent body silhouette, and the exotic rosewood necks, the instruments feature custom-to-this series Fralin pickups with specially colored bone tops, Klein acoustic-styled bridges, handmade tuner buttons, and a variety of other subtle thematically consistent aesthetic touches.
Michael Spalt adds, "The sound and playability has surpassed my expectations. Low action with finely tuned frets in combination with slightly longer scale gives a harmonious sound, with good attack and sustain and excellent playability. The large body, comfortable to hold, with a highly carved back, resonates warmly. The bone-top pickups sparkle and sing - the sound is unique yet useful for almost any musical genre."
Years of design, as well as careful and costly art selection precede the release of The Nouveau Series, enhancing its stature as one of the rarest and most artful collections of electric guitars ever offered.

Gwar's Crack-A-Thon celebrity-esque guests announced
Preparations for GWAR's CRACK-A-THON continue as another round of celebrity-esque guests have been announced. Sources revealed today that host Oderus Urungus will be joined by legendary weirdo, filmmaker, and founder of Troma Films, Lloyd Kaufman, who will of course be accompanied by mutant mop-wielder and star of stage and screen, The Toxic Avenger. Also fresh on the block of unwitting victims/guests is New York artist Joe Simko and cyber-warlord Mecronos of the band Dethrace. These guests will be joining the first confirmed guest Andrew W.K. and the many other yet-to-be-confirmed sort of stars that are rapidly turning the CRACK-A-THON into the most fudge-packed event since the Buddy Ebsen roast!
All the fun starts on April 10th, when the MF Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y. hosts the CRACK-A-THON kickoff party, which will feature an exhibit of prints of both classic GWAR art and other hideous visions created by some of the artists of Slave Pit Inc, the company responsible for bringing the world GWAR, the X-Cops, and numerous other side projects to ridiculous to mention in this press release. This print series is being created exclusively for MF Gallery and will also be available for purchase online at MFGallery.net. The evening shall be capped off with the music of Mecronos' band, Dethrace, and homeless animal rights activist and avowed organ-grinder Chippy the Chippopotamus!
All of this is just a lead-up to the actual First Annual (even though that is impossible) GWAR CRACK-A-THON, Oderus Urungus' desperate attempt to raise funds to pay off the heaping crack-debt he owes to underground mogul Sleazy P. Martini. Starting at 7:00 pm on April 16th, anyone with internet access will be able to witness all of the shenanigans, via a live broadcast from the MF Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. For those of you in the area, reserve your seats NOW to be in the live studio audience with a ten-dollar pledge! Do so right now, here--http://www.mfgallery.net/

THE TOXIC AVENGER
Transforming from a 98-pound weakling to a mutant super-hero isn't for everyone and Toxie has done more with it than most could, becoming not only a hideously mutated defender of the weak but an international star of stage and screen. There is always something new to notice upon each viewing of Simko’s artwork.
MECRONOS
Mecronos is the lead singer of DETHRACE, a band of satanic superhero robots who play 666 volts of ear blasting Heavy Metal music. Mars Volta artist Sonny Kay exhibiting in L.A.
Visual artist Sonny Kay presents L.A. gallery opening
POV Evolving Gallery and Sargent House announce the Los Angeles gallery opening of recent work by renown visual artist Sonny Kay. The installation titled Tamper Proof: Recent Works by Sonny Kay opens with a gala reception on Thursday, February 11, 2010. The event also features acoustic performances by Lisa Papineau, Matthew Embree (RX Bandits) and Liquid Indian, plus special guest DJs (DJ) Nobody and Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta). The artist's installation runs through March 9th, 2010.
Sonny Kay’s work will certainly be familiar to devotees of The Mars Volta, and in particular the vast solo output of Volta head-honcho, Omar Rodriguez Lopez. As creative director for Rodriguez Lopez’s L.A.-based eponymous record/film imprint, Rodriguez Lopez Productions, Kay’s meticulous collage and graphic design work has become synonymous with a seemingly endless stream of heady, inspired psychedelic albums that began appearing en masse in 2006.
POV Evolving presents Tamper Proof, a show of Kay’s most recent album-related works and some as-yet-unseen creations intent on wriggling out of the confines of the 12” LP sleeve.
Kay’s music-world pedigree predates the coming of The Mars Volta by more than 10 years. During his college years in Boulder, Colorado, Kay became a central figure on the underground music scene, first as a promoter (culminating in his management of the U of C’s notorious Club 156 venue between 1993 and 1995), and then as a performer. As vocalist for the cult punk bands Angel Hair and The VSS, Kay traversed the United States repeatedly, following in the footsteps of groups like Black Flag and Fugazi, anticipating those of The Faint and At the Drive-In.
Launching the celebrated Gold Standard Laboratories (GSL) label with student loan money in 1993, Kay went on to release seminal material from then-unknown groups such as The Locust, The Rapture, !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Chromatics, and eventually, The Mars Volta. By the time he designed the packaging for that band’s 2002 debut, Tremulant, Kay had partnered with Rodriguez Lopez and GSL became, effectively, the band’s own label.
Kay’s design work was soon finding its was onto stage backdrops, t-shirts, laminates skateboards and myriad other tour-related ephemera, but GSL’s days were numbered. The label’s enthusiasm for releasing the work of like-minded avant-punks didn’t typically translate into record sales, and the top-heavy label closed its doors in 2007. Switching gears to full-time artist/designer, Kay seized the opportunity to carve out a recognizable niche for his idiosyncratic work. Falling mostly within the realm of digital collage, his rapidly evolving style has consistently striven to avoid the typical trappings and technical shortcomings many expect from a colloquial medium juxtaposing the old and new for comic or ironic effect.
Comprised of web-sourced snapshots and thrift-shop reference book illustrations, Kay’s painstakingly assembled composites themselves often resemble photographs, or even paintings - alternately poignant, opinionated, illustrative, occasionally funny, or simply unexplained. Fantastic, and yet eerily realistic, Kay’s images point to his convergent interests in perception, human and primate anthropology, entheogens, consciousness, evolution and anarchism. Buffeted by the virtually free-reign platform afforded by modern rock music’s arguably most prolific recording artist, Kay’s pace has quickened and his output diversified considerably thanks to Rodriguez Lopez’s literally nonstop flow of albums.
Which isn’t to say that Kay doesn’t enjoy some good old-fashioned stream-of-consciousness-derived haphazardry, nor trying his skill at designing for other artists. Tamper Proof presents examples of a variety of Kay’s work, much of which was produced since his last exhibition, Colliding on Purpose (January 2009), at Han Cholo Gallery. 2009-10 has seen his imagery adorn the sleeves of groups as varied as RX Bandits, Shooter Jennings, Red Sparowes, and NoCanDo, to name only some. However, with Rodriguez Lopez sticking to his promise to release “an album a month”, the effect that level of productivity has on Kay's other endeavors remains to be seen.

Lance Mercer to exhibit Pearl Jam photographs in NYC
Renowned photographer Lance Mercer, best known for his photography of iconic rock band, Pearl Jam, will be showcasing his work on December 12, 2009 at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in NYC. The exhibit will open at 2pm at 124 Prince Street at Wooster in NYC.
Lance was Pearl Jam’s designated photographer in the early years of the band (1991-1995) and enjoyed exclusive access to backstage, travel and other areas that fans would normally not be able to see. With that access, Lance was able to capture “lightening in a bottle” as Pearl Jam led the charge in the heyday of early 90’s grunge rock and the rock resurgence along with Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and others.
The show at the Morrison Hotel Gallery will showcase some of the amazing historical photographic moments that Lance captured of Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Dave Abbruzzese, Jack Irons and Matt Cameron on tour, bringing history making live shows to audiences worldwide.
Lance says, “The years on the road with Pearl Jam are both a blur and a flashbulb memory all at the same time. We worked as a team and the result are these amazing photos. That experience has continued to inform my work and probably always will. I am happy and proud to be showing this work at the Morrison Hotel Gallery. They are perfect photos for this place at this time.”
Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam: "Having Lance on the road and in the studio with us during those days will always be a gift. It was rare air that we were breathing and even though we probably didn’t know it 100% at the time, we were having experiences as a band and as people that were impacting us and the fans in equal measure. Having Lance's photos as that historical record is something that I will treasure for my whole life...also, he was just great to have around, comic relief for us so t hat we weren’t taking ourselves too seriously. He has a rare talent to photograph things in the moment that few photographers have. He is a kindred creative spirit for us."
Jeff Ament, Pearl Jam: "Lance....has always been about the music and that's why it all works. He worked his ass off, took a lot of shit, bugged the hell out of us, and captured the band like nobody has since. "
The show will include images from Lance’s two books Place/Date his collaboration with Nirvana photographer Charles Peterson and 5X1 Pearl Jam Through the Eye of Lance Mercer.
Both books received critical acclaim for their rare insight into a musical time period never to be repeated.
Lance’s work of Pearl Jam and other subjects has appeared in Time, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and SPIN Magazine among others.

Natty Brooker to debut work in U.S.
British artist Natty Brooker, best known for his collaboration with legendary UK bands Spacemen3 and Spiritualized is debuting his life’s work in the United States in October 2009 at Substrate Gallery, Los Angeles.
This run is the first in a series of shows in art capitals around the world, including New York, London and Berlin, where Brooker’s work will be seen as a whole for the first time.
Curated by friend and former band-mate Will Carruthers, the show is the culmination of a lifetime’s work for Brooker. “Natty is a genius, pure and simple. His influence as an artist on the British music scene was far reaching. What many people don’t know is that Natty now has terminal cancer, so this will be the first and last time people will have the opportunity to see his amazing work as a collection.”
Brooker was responsible for much of the Spacemen3/Spiritualized aesthetic. He introduced founding members Pete Kember and Jason Pierce (aka J.Spaceman and Sonic Boom) to blues and gospel; played drums on the first Spacemen3 album Sound of Confusion; and also appeared on the classic demos release Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To.
It was Natty's iconic Devil and Angel design that adorned the first Spiritualized album cover Lazer Guided Melodies and it was his endlessly recurring threes that graced the last Spacemen3 album Recurring.
Putting the show together has been a labor of love for Brooker and Carruthers, having spent months collecting the original art work from around Europe.
“Natty had a tendency to give his work away once finished. We’ve spent the last 6 months tracking down his friends and asking for the work back so that we could get it scanned and make it available to other people.”
Often Brooker painted on wooden boards, plastic sheets, and other discarded objects with whatever was at hand; in biro, felt tip or leftover emulsion paint. Between the scavenged materials and extreme subject matter, Brooker’s work is peculiar, unsettling, humorous - and always tipping a wink to mortality.
“Spacemen3’s music was once described as ‘music to blow your mind inside out’” says Carruthers, “and that’s exactly how Natty would describe his art now. It’s a rare pleasure to be able to show the public Natty’s life’s work, particularly at this time.”
The LA opening will take place on the evening of October 3rd 2009. Los Angeles’ shoegaze band THE MEEK will be spinning a DJ set of the genre’s classics. Prints of all the works are available as a signed and numbered set of 14 for $1600. Individual signed and numbered prints are available starting at $200.

Brookville to release new album and tour
The New York-based band Brookville (http://www.unfilteredrecords.com/artists/show/brookville) has confirmed the release of their third full-length release, Broken Lights this September 29 on Unfiltered Records/ILG. Unfiltered is the six-year old record label run by Brookville’s Andy Chase and is the second release under a new agreement with Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group (ILG) to distribute his label.
Brookville’s Andy Chase (founding member of the band Ivy) also announced that the band would head out on the road with Trashcan Sinatras with whom he has a long relationship, having produced their latest release. The tour begins on July 28 at the Casbah in San Diego and concludes on August 16 in Boston at T.T. the Bear’s. Additional dates include:
7/28 @ The Casbah, San Diego, CA
7/29 @ Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA
7/30 @ Café du Nord, San Francisco, CA
7/31 @ Café du Nord, San Francisco, CA
8/2 @ Aladdin Theatre, Portland, OR
8/3 @ Triple Door, Seattle. WA
8/5 @ Club Vegas, Salt Lake City, UT
8/6 @ Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO
8/8 @ Firebird, St. Louis, MO
8/9 @ Schuba's, Chicago, IL
8/10 @ Shank Hall, Milwaukee, WI
8/11 @ Grog Shop, Cleveland, OH
8/13 @ Rock & Roll Hotel, Washington DC
8/14 @ Tin Angel, Philadelphia, PA
8/15 @ Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY
8/16 @ T.T. the Bear's, Boston, MA
Andy Chase wears many hats – label co-owner (Unfiltered), producer (Juliana Hatfield, Tahiti 80), film composer (The Farrelly Brothers Shallow Hal), recording studio owner (Stratosphere Sound with James Iha and Adam Schlesinger) and musician (Ivy, Paco). For Broken Lights, however, Chase for the first time handed over his producer hat to good friend Pedro Resende of the band Tahiti 80.
The project took on an unexpected direction, with Resende coaxing the nuance out of Chase’s vocals giving Broken Lights much more of a singer-songwriter sensibility than earlier Brookville efforts. So different, in fact, that Chase considered releasing it under another band name. Eventually it became clear that Broken Lights is merely the next evolution in sound for Brookville.
The disc’s sometimes moody, often pensive and experimental quality, in both its lyrics and music, makes Broken Lights a more compelling direction for the band. Standout tracks are “Great Mistake” the almost-sunny plea of a lover who begs for freedom; the ethereal yet piercing “Dreaming On”, “Break My Heart,” which features Tim Yehezkely from The Postmarks and an evocative cover of The Go-Betweens guitarist Grant McLennan’s “Haunted House”.
ABOUT BROOKVILLE
Andy Chase released the album Wonderfully Nothing in 2003 as Brookville, and brought the project back for 2006’s Life in the Shade. While Chase is the driving engine of Brookville, past and current collaborators have included James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) Eric Matthews (Cardinal), Jean-Pierre Ensuque (Autour de Lucie), Jon Skibic (Gigolo Aunts), Danny Wienkauf (They Might Be Giants), producer-programmer Michael Hampton, and many others. Brookville has toured with Goldfrapp and Tahiti 80. Their latest release, Broken Lights will be released on September 29, 2009 on Chase’s own Unfiltered Record via ILG.
