Donita Sparks (www.donitasparks.com ), front person for the seminal rock band L7 releases her debut solo record Transmiticate on February 19, 2008. Distributed through Redeye (www.redeyeusa.com ), the album from Donita Sparks and The Stellar Moments - filled with dance rock and dark pop gems - sees Donita moving solidly into interesting new territories. Transmiticate tracks include: “Fly Feather Fly”, “Dare Dare”, “Infancy of a Disaster”, “Headcheck”, “My Skin’s Too Thin”, “Curtains for Cathy”, “Creampuff”, “He’s Got the Honey”, “Need to Numb”, “Take a Few Steps” and “Into the Hi Fi”.
2008 will be especially busy for Sparks. In addition to the release of Transmiticate, Donita will launch her own offerings at the previously announced CASH Music (Coalition of Artists and Stake Holders). Formed with venerable singer/songwriter Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses), CASH Music (www.cashmusic.org ) is a platform for artists to create a sustainable livelihood and more interaction/exchange with their fans. While still in it’s earliest form, CASH provides a direct connection between artists and fans who are both essentially stakeholders in the production of music.
“Knowing that I will be releasing my debut release Transmiticate, reaching new audiences online through CASH Music and touring with my band The Stellar Moments is the best way I can think of to kick off 2008,” says Sparks.
In October 2007, Sparks and her band hit the road with The Donnas for her first solo tour. The 30+ date national tour gave fans an opportunity to hear tracks from the unreleased Transmiticate, which was glowingly written about by traditional music press as well as online outlets such as MTV.com and Live Daily. It was also a chance for Sparks to reconnect with her audience as a solo artist and not as a member of L7.
“I was so touched by the enthusiasm of my longtime fans when I was on the road,” said Sparks. “They inspired me every time I walked on stage with their positive energy. They really seem supportive of my new direction.”
Sparks' new direction will again take off in late February, when she heads off to rock Brazil with her own headlining shows. It will be her first time in the country since 1994 when L7 appeared with Nirvana. Speaking of Brazil, Donita created a mash-up of Brazilian rock sensations CSS (vs. L7) in response to the band doing a lively cover of the Sparks penned classic “Pretend We’re Dead.” The mash-up “Pretend We’re Alala” was just named one of the best mash-ups of 2007 as reported on BoingBoing.
Following the Brazilian tour, Sparks and The Stellar Moments are confirmed for more tour dates, including an appearance this March at the music and media conference, South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin. Summer dates in Europe and the U.S. will be announced shortly.
As if all this isn’t enough, Sparks continues to write weekly for the influential political blog Firedoglake in her music/ pop art column “The Spin I’m In”. She also contributed to the score of the 2007 feature film The Life of Reilly (starring the late Charles Nelson Reilly) listed in the Village Voice as one of the best documentaries of 2007.

Donita Sparks co-founded the heavy riff-oriented band L7 in 1985. L7 released six studio albums, one live CD, and one greatest hits record. Their 1992 release Bricks Are Heavy was included in Rolling Stone’s list of “Essential Albums of the 1990s”. With their recording career beginning in 1987 and continuing through the ‘90s, L7 spawned underground and mainstream hits such as: Shove, Pretend We’re Dead, Shitlist, Andres, and Fuel My Fire. Take a rock history tour with Esotouric
Esotouric, the eclectic collective whose offbeat bus tours expose LA's secret history, returns to founder Kim Cooper's rock and roll roots on Saturday, February 2 with WHERE THE ACTION WAS. This new tour, co-hosted by pop critic Gene Sculatti, explores the musical history of Hollywood and the Sunset Strip through visits to celebrated nightclubs, recording studios, record label offices and other places of subcultural importance.

Volunteers needed for Doo Dah's Country Gentlemen
We need more men volunteers who what to be in The Country Gentlemen group for the DooDah parade. The group is 12 Country Gentlemen, we have 4 at this point, that would make a need for 8 more, but we would like to have a back up of 2. So, that makes 10 needed.
Here are the qualifications.
1. Must look in reasonably good shape and have a little rhythm. Race and age is not a big factor, however we would prefer 30+
2. Must have black regular cowboy boots and black slacks, not jeans.
3. Must we willing to rehearse some evenings and sunday afternoon and every evening the Monday before the parade.
4. Must be willing to help with the parade staging and arrive at 8:00 AM parade day.
5. Pay $30 for the custom embroidered CG shirt. The fifty ($50) dollar CG Wilton hat will be theirs to keep, if they show up parade day.
6. Most important... must be a "gentleman."

End o' week musings
I woke up this morning with a headache. Unfortunately I can't say it's from partying too much, rather it's probably from thinking too much. I've been busy trying to coordinate my life between work, dancing and my appearances as the 31st Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade Queen. Plus I'm working on a huge sewing project and a bunch of other creative ideas.
On Friday, when we last met, I was on my was to an appearance at the Gilded Age Holiday Tour and Tea at Fenyes Mansion at the Pasadena Museum of History. It was lots of fun and you can read about my aventure at www.insidesocal.com/doodah You can still tour the historic mansion (only I won't be there) and visit the musuem, which will be launching an exhibit on purses Jan. 23. Saturday I went shopping woo hoo! I went to Frederick's and JoAnn Fabrics and drove home in a daze. I was't in the door long, when I decided to take a nap. I took it easy the rest of the day. I was under the weather on Sunday, so I continued in my relaxed state.
I was supposed to work early New Year's Day, but it was canceled, so I was all dressed up with no place to go - so to speak - on New Year's Eve. My friend, Andrew, and I went to House of Louie for a Chinese dinner. I have a tradition of sorts of having a Chinese dinner for New Year's Eve. It started a long time ago when Chinese restaurants were one of the few places open late, plus you get a fortune to start the new year. We enjoyed a dim sum plate and some almond duck with sweet and sour sauce, followed by ginger and green tea ice cream- yummy!!
New Year's Day I lounged on the couch in pajamas, sipping mimosas and watching the Rose Parade. Then I got to work with some fabric and my serger (an overlock sewing machine). The machine and I had a disagreement and after several attempts at rethreading and resetting, I gave, the machine won. But only for one day, as Wednesday, my friend Cindy dropped by and managed to fix it for me! Cindy also got to show off her new car- a Toyota SUV that's perfect for her camping and kayaking trips, as well as toting her two dogs everywhere.
Last night I did more sewing. This time I kept myself busy for two hours with sequins, jewels and a lot of handwork. I'll share my secret project with you in due time...
Tomorrow (Saturday), Valerie and I will be heading out to the Body Art Expo at the Fairplex in Pomona. We're not dancing this time, but we want to visit our friends and look around. Who knows? Maybe we'll get some work done... or at least some shopping. It's a great place to meet artists and get ideas, especially before you commit to permanently adorning your body with art. In the evening, I will be going to the Open Mic Night at the Fret House in Covina. I probably won't perform, but I will cheer on the other acts and help Rich out. It's a nice way to spend an evening.
The rest of my week is filled with interviews, a photo shoot, more sewing and dance practices. Too exciting, huh??? Well, don't forget to mark your calendar for Jan. 12th when Valerie and I dance at Gem City in Monrovia as part of Prince Andrew's Brithstravaganza & Pre-Doo Dah Party. Rumors are you can meet the Queen there and she'll even give you an autographed photo if you ask nice!

This week's thought: Even if things are not going their best, you can still feel thankful. When I was laying in bed feeling icky all over, I thought about how fortunate I am to have a decent apartment, a warm bed with fuzzy blankets, a radio and a television nearby to keep me entertained between naps, plus a nice pile of books and my cell phone. I have a pretty good life-- how about you??

Iron Maiden flies into L.A. for show
Iron Maiden will be performing a one off show at the Los Angeles Forum on Tuesday February 19th as part of the first leg of the ‘SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME WORLD TOUR 2008’. The band will fly in especially for this one show from Tokyo two days before and depart for Mexico the day after on a specially commissioned and customised Boeing 757, flown by Astraeus Airline Captain and Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson. The 757, decked out in Maiden and Eddie artwork, will carry the band, road crew and other personnel of around 70 people plus over 12 tons of equipment.

Secondhand Serenade readies new release
The release date for Secondhand Serenade's new album A Twist In My Story has been pushed to FEBRUARY 19th (was originally February 5th) on Glassnote/East West. The first single "Fall For You" is currently available on iTunes. Snippets of two new songs, "Fall For You" and "Like A Knife" can be heard on Secondhand Serenade's MySpace page where we'll be debuting new snippets on a week to week basis up until release date.

The video for "Fall For You" was shot in LA by Ryan Rickett (She Wants Revenge, Pigeon Detectives, VHS Or BETA) last month.
Singer/Songwriter John Vesely is Secondhand Serenade of Menlo Park, CA - SHS became MySpace's #1 unsigned artist for 7 months at the end of 2006 and sold over 20,000 copies of his self-produced, debut album Awake through a PayPal account on his MySpace - Fast forward to 2007, Glassnote signed him and re-released Awake which has sold almost 100,000 copies to date. The video for "Vulnerable" broke on MTV (#1 testing video w/females while it was in heavy rotation) and John performed on Late Night w/Conan O'Brien, Won Yahoo's "Who's Next??" competition and toured w/Plain White T's, Good Charlotte and the All American Rejects among others.
