Palm Pictures presents PATTI SMITH: DREAM OF LIFE, opening Friday, October 17, 2008, at Landmark’s Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles.
PATTI SMITH & STEVEN SEBRING IN PERSON: the legendary subject of the film and its director, will speak at Nuart Theatre showings on Friday October 17, at 7:15 & 9:55. They will also be available in the lobby between shows to sign copies of the companion book to the film (on sale at Nuart), and meet fans.
This portrait of legendary singer, artist and poet Patti Smith is a plunge into the philosophy and artistry of the cult rocker. Known as the godmother of punk, she emerged in the 1970s, galvanizing the music scene with her unique style of poetic rage, music and trademark swagger. We follow the multitalented and private artist over 11 years of international travel, through her spoken words, performances, lyrics, interviews, paintings and photographs.
Narrated by Patti Smith, director Steven Sebring's documentary reveals a complicated, charismatic personality who wrestles with life's many paradoxes, defining the human experience as an overwhelming contradiction.
Featuring band members Lenny Kaye, Oliver Ray, Tony Shanahan and Jay Dee Daugherty, plus appearances from Jackson Smith, Jesse Smith, Tom Verlaine, Sam Shepard, Philip Glass, Benjamin Smoke and Flea. Winner of the Best Cinematography Award (Documentary) at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
Steven Sebring is a photographer/director known for his definitive style of merging raw realism with high fashion. He has worked with numerous magazines and shot campaigns for companies such as Ralph Lauren, Lanvin, Maybelline, DKNY, and Coach. It was however, his shooting celebrity and artist portraiture that led to his meeting and photographing the legendary artist, Patti Smith. Upon seeing her perform he was so moved, that he encouraged her to allow him to begin filming, resulting in the eleven year film project DREAM OF LIFE.
The film’s running time is 109 minutes; it is not rated.
PATTI SMITH: DREAM OF LIFE opens Friday, October 17, 2008 at Landmark’s Nuart Theatre, showing through Thursday, October 23 for an exclusive one-week engagement. Daniel Pearl World Music Days Oct. 1-31
From Canada to Cameroon, Poland to Pakistan and Israel to Indonesia, music artists, from every corner of the globe, will unite in a collective call for tolerance and understanding of our shared humanity during the 7th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days, a worldwide network of concerts dedicated to "Harmony for Humanity." The events run from October 1-31, and already include more than 500 performances in 41 countries. Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter and musician, kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002, would have celebrated his 45th birthday on October 10.
Some of the artists who have registered their October concerts include Honorary Committee members Herbie Hancock, Alison Krauss, R.E.M., Tania Libertad, Yefim Bronfman, Ida Haendel, Mark O'Connor, Conductors George Pehlivanian, Zubin Mehta, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and an Oberlin College performance of Steve Reich's "Daniel Variations." Additional artists include Dave Koz, Laurie Anderson, The Kronos Quartet, Kathy Mattea, Jason Mraz, Michel Camilo, Doug Kershaw, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, India's premier jazz ensemble Jazz Junction, Cesaria Evora, American Youth Symphony, Stanford Music Department, Denton School of Music and many more, representing every imaginable genre from acoustic to Zydeco.
In addition, a special tour called FODfest (Friends of Danny), a rolling jam session featuring more than 200 musicians, and led by Pearl's former band-mate and friend, radio host Todd Mack, will run from October 10-26 and visit 14 cities across the U.S. including Boston, New York, Washington DC, Atlanta, Nashville, Seattle, Portland, Berkeley and Los Angeles.
Daniel Pearl World Music Days takes place each year during October, to coincide with Pearl's birthday October 10. This year the Wall Street Journal reporter, who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002 while researching a story, would have been 45. An accomplished musician, Pearl connected to people through music in every country he visited, often joining local music groups and participating in impromptu jam sessions.
"Danny was a passionate believer in the power of music to bring people together regardless of ethnic, religious or cultural differences," said his father Judea Pearl, President of the Daniel Pearl Foundation. "World Music Days is a tribute to this passion and a powerful instrument in our quest for a hate-free world. Its mission resonates with a broad spectrum of professional artists on every continent, as well as youth and school groups."
World Music Days is designed to raise awareness and promote tolerance and understanding of our shared humanity.
Artists register their October events at the Web site and make a dedication in support of "Harmony for Humanity" from the stage and/or in the printed program. Participants can create an Artist page on the site with text, photos, videos and links seen worldwide.
"World Music Days' message, exulting our shared humanity, has really struck a chord," said Ruth Pearl, Daniel's mother. "Over and over we hear how the simple act of a spoken dedication empowers both the artist and audience members with a sense of unity and purpose."
Artists also can submit original compositions inspired by the legacy of Daniel Pearl to be considered for the "Harmony for Humanity eStage," a streaming internet radio station broadcast from the Foundation's Web site throughout October. eStage features original compositions, music by members of the World Music Days Honorary Committee, recordings from dedicated concerts as well as themed broadcasts and tapes of Danny himself playing with various bands.
Artists can still register an October performance as part of Daniel Pearl World Music Days 2008. To learn more about World Muisic Days or the "Harmony for Humanity" eStage, please visit www.danielpearlmusicdays.org.
Registered events taking place outside of October are welcome and will be listed as "Tribute Concerts."
The Daniel Pearl Foundation works domestically and internationally to promote cross-cultural understanding, to counter cultural and religious hatred, to encourage responsible and creative journalism, and to unite people through music.
Some of the artists who have registered their October concerts include Honorary Committee members Herbie Hancock, Alison Krauss, R.E.M., Tania Libertad, Yefim Bronfman, Ida Haendel, Mark O'Connor, Conductors George Pehlivanian, Zubin Mehta, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and an Oberlin College performance of Steve Reich's "Daniel Variations." It's free to join in on Family Trail Weekend Oct. 11-13
Just as Christopher Columbus explored the new world, thrilled to discover its natural beauty -- the National Wildlife Federation has created a program that encourages families to discover and reconnect with nature by participating in the first annual Make Tracks! Family Trail Weekend™, October 11-13, Columbus Day Weekend. NWF is hoping families will trade some screen time for green time by walking, biking, hiking or strolling on the trails and paths right outside their front door.
NWF has taken the leg-work out of preparing for this fun family outing. A new web site, maketracks.org, provides a list of supplies, tips for family-friendly activities, and a link to NatureFind, a terrific database to locate the best nearby trails, walking paths and parks, just by entering your zip code. With today’s high gas prices, discovering nature where you live has even more benefits.
Haven’t hiked much, or ever? No problem, you don’t need to be an expert or in top physical condition to enjoy the outdoors. Have small children? Grab the stroller. Your outing can be as long or as short as you want. Be part of a growing movement in the U.S. to rediscover the outdoors – and realize the benefits of stepping away from the computer or TV or video game and breathing some fresh air while experiencing the wonders of nature.
Make Tracks! is part of National Wildlife Federation’s Green Hour® campaign which urges parents to give their kids a daily dose of nature – unstructured time for children to leave homework, piano lessons and soccer practice behind to play outside and discover the freedom it provides. This time can improve both physical and mental health for adults and kids alike. The alarming spike in childhood obesity has revealed the true cost of a “plugged-in” lifestyle.
“This antidote to our plugged-in kids is critical,” says Bethe Almeras, Senior Manager of Family Programs for the National Wildlife Federation. “Kids today spend half as much time outdoors as children did just 20 years ago.”
So be an explorer like Christopher Columbus. The natural beauty of America awed the 15th-century navigator – here is what he wrote in his journal:
October 28, 1492 -- “At sunrise I approached the coast and entered a very beautiful river free from dangerous shoals. The water all along the coast is deep and clear right to the shore. The country around the river is full of trees, beautiful and green and different from ours, each with flowers and its own kind of fruit. There are many birds of all sizes that sing very sweetly. The crew of the Nina stated that they had seen a grajao (a large black bird like a crow) or water-wagtail, which never go farther than 25 leagues from land.”
Put your best foot forward this Columbus Day and visit maketracks.org. Register your family and join the thousands of parents who have become members of the Green Hour movement. More information and a weekly guide to outdoor fun can be found on greenhour.org.

Vikki Carr, Cheo Feliciano, Astrud Gilberto, Angélica María, María Dolores Pradera, and Estela Raval to be honored by Latin Recording Academy
Vikki Carr, Cheo Feliciano, Astrud Gilberto, Angélica María, María Dolores Pradera, and Estela Raval will receive The Latin Recording Academy® Lifetime Achievement Award. Simón Díaz, Larry Harlow, and Juanito Márquez will be honored with the Latin Recording Academy Trustees Award. The award recipients will be acknowledged at a special ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts in Houston.
"This is a diverse group of honorees that represent the vivid history, rich diversity and true foundation of Latin music," said Gabriel Abaroa, President of The Latin Recording Academy. "Their legendary passion and artistry has spanned many decades across many countries, illustrating the prominence and importance of Latin music globally. The Board of Trustees of The Latin Recording Academy is honored to pay homage to these creative and innovative visionaries who have made prolific contributions to Latin culture."
Lifetime Achievement Awards: This Special Award is presented by vote of The Latin Recording Academy's Trustees to performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.
Three-time GRAMMY® winner Vikki Carr has helped pave the way for American singers to freely explore their Latin roots in the United States. Born in El Paso, Texas, she released her first Spanish language album in 1972 and quickly developed a strong Mexican following. She has spanned genres from mainstream pop to country and jazz, and recorded more than 60 albums. Carr has also made her mark on screen and stage, and still performs to sold-out audiences today.
Blessed with a beautiful voice, Puerto Rico's Cheo Feliciano has been at the epicenter of the salsa movement since the '60s. As a soulful singer with a bolero style, he explored the fusion of Afro-Cuban dance with mainstream American genres such as R&B and big band jazz. He was an important part of the cultural movement of the New York salsa explosion in the '70s. With such hits as "El Ratón" and "A La Seis" he continues to play live shows and record salsa songs to this day.
The unique, wispy style of Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto highlighted on the classic hit "The Girl From Ipanema" stormed the world by surprise as she won Record Of The Year at the 7th Annual GRAMMY Awards in 1964. As a poignant symbol of the bossa nova movement, she recorded more classics including among many others "Insensatez," and "Corcovado," In 2002 she released Jungle, an album of original compositions and she continues to sing throughout the world.
One of Mexico's jewels known as "La Novia de México," Angélica María was the first woman to record in the bolero ranchero field, and her distinctive voice became associated with the emerging rock en español genre. Born in the United States, she relocated to Mexico City at the age of five, and is known for such pop-rock gems as "Adónde Va Nuestro Amor" and "Dominque." She has also enjoyed a flourishing career as an actress, starring in many movies, stage musicals, and telenovelas, where she continues to work today.
Favoring classic song formats like the bolero, ranchera, ronda, fado, and vals, María Dolores Pradera is one of the most respected and majestic singers to come out of Spain. She began her career as an actress, and in the '60s joined Los Gemelos, where she would develop her crisp, delicate vocals that stand out in such songs as "Amarraditos," and "La Flor De La Canela." She continues recording albums and performing worldwide, and most recently released En Buenas, a compilation album of her best duets.
An influential artist in the emergence of Latin pop and Spanish rock and roll, Estela Raval brought '50s doo wop into Latin America. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1956, she founded the group Los 5 Latinos, with whom she would record more than 20 albums and such hits as "Solamente Tú" and "Tú Eres Mi Destino." Last year, they celebrated their 50th Anniversary with numerous sold-out shows throughout the Americas and a live CD/DVD package. She continues performing actively.
Trustees Award: This Special Award is presented by vote of The Latin Recording Academy's Trustees to individuals who, during their careers in music, have made significant contributions, other than performance, to the field of recording.
Venezuelan composer and singer Simón Díaz has written dozens of songs that deeply connect to Latin American culture. His famous anthem "Caballo Viejo" — also known as "Bamboleo" — has been translated into more than 10 different languages. Artists he has composed for include Ruben Blades, Celia Cruz, Plácido Domingo, Julio Iglesias, and the Gipsy Kings. He recorded his first album as a singer/songwriter in 1963, and has since recorded many albums including the 2001 Amorosante where he revisited his bolero beginnings, as well as 2005's Sabaneando. Also recognized as a celebrated comedian in Venezuela, his career has also encompassed roles in film, television, and theatre.
Salsa bandleader and keyboardist Larry Harlow, "El Judío Maravilloso," was one of the pivotal influences in the salsa explosion of the '70s. A Jewish-American New Yorker, he proved that you don't need to be Latino in order to be an innovator of Afro-Caribbean music. His densely textured keyboard solos highlight such classic salsa anthems as "La Cartera" and "Señor Sereno." A tireless promoter of tropical music, he has produced dozens of albums, created the all-female orchestra Latin Fever, and was an integral in the establishment of a Latin music category in the GRAMMY Awards — which was instituted in 1975. He currently tours the world performing salsa music.
Cuban guitarist and composer Juanito Márquez has had a remarkable career as a songwriter, arranger, and conductor in Cuba, Spain, and the United States. He composed the memorable boleros "Alma Con Alma" and "Como Un Milagro," and his debut album in 1964 pioneered the infectious song format pa' cá — a swinging Cuban variation of the Venezuelan joropo. He was at the forefront of the golden era of Cuban music, when genres such as mambo and cha-cha-cha changed Latin music forever. His distinctive guitar skills can be heard in the music of Cachao, Julio Iglesias, Paul Mauriat, and on such Gloria Estefan albums as Mi Tierra, Abriendo Puertas, and the recent 90 Millas.
The Latin Recording Academy is an international, membership-based organization comprised of Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking recording artists, musicians, songwriters, producers and other creative and technical recording professionals. The organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life and cultural condition for Latin music and its makers. In addition to producing the Latin GRAMMY Awards to honor excellence in the recorded arts and sciences, The Latin Recording Academy provides educational and outreach programs for the Latin music community.

A tireless promoter of tropical music, he has produced dozens of albums, created the all-female orchestra Latin Fever, and was an integral in the establishment of a Latin music category in the GRAMMY Awards — which was instituted in 1975.

Hall & Oates Troubadour concert DVD now available
In May 2008, Daryl Hall and John Oates took the stage at the legendary Troubadour for the first time since playing their earliest Los Angeles shows there 35 years before. The best performances from this much anticipated two-night concert, which included hits such as “Maneater,” “Private Eyes,” “Rich Girl,” “Sara Smile” and “Kiss On My List,” will be made available in three formats – DVD, Blu-Ray, and a 1-DVD/2-CD combo, via Shout! Factory on November 25.
“John and I have a lot of great memories associated with performing at the Troubadour, since it was our first show in LA," said Daryl. "It's like going back to where it all began for us. We've always had an enthusiastic following in Los Angeles, and this is a chance for our fans to see us up close and personal in an intimate setting.”
Beyond the classic hits, the sold-out shows featured rarely performed fan favorites and deep album cuts, as well as Daryl Hall solo material, with the duo backed by a band comprised of longtime member T-Bone Wolk on guitar and vocals, Mike Braun on drums, Charles DeChant on sax, keys and vocals, Eliot Lewis on keys and vocals, Zev Katz on bass, and Everett Bradley on percussion and vocals.
The concerts were filmed by Blaze TV with 10 remote-controlled HD cameras, allowing the viewer to experience the performance as if they were inside the crowded LA club. Although an abridged version of the show will be broadcast on VH1’s Rave HD channel in late 2008, the Live At The Troubadour DVD will be the only way to catch performances of all of the songs, as well as exclusive new interviews with Hall and Oates.
Formed in Philadelphia in 1972, Daryl Hall & John Oates have enjoyed six #1 singles between the mid-‘70s and the mid-80’s, including “Rich Girl” (also #1 R&B), “Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do) (also #1 R&B), “Maneater” and “Out of Touch,” from their six consecutive multi-platinum albums—’76’s Bigger Than Both of Us, ’80’s Voices, ’81’s Private Eyes, ‘82’s H2O, ‘83’s Rock N Soul, Part I and ‘84’s Big Bam Boom. The era would also produce an additional 5 Top 10 singles, “Sara Smile,” “One on One,” “You Make My Dreams,” “Say It Isn’t So” and “Method of Modern Love.”
Daryl also wrote the H&O single "Everytime You Go Away," which singer Paul Young scored a number-one hit with a cover of the song in 1985. That same year, Daryl and John, participated in the historic “We Are the World” session as well as closing the Live Aid show in Philadelphia. By 1987, the R.I.A.A. recognized Daryl Hall and John Oates as the NUMBER-ONE SELLING DUO in music history, a record they still hold today.
Daryl and John have recently been receiving recognition from younger artists including KT Tunstall, Gym Class Heroes and Finger Eleven, all of whom have appeared on Daryl’s media and fan-praised web show, www.livefromdarylshouse.com, the captivating series that has been receiving kudos from Rolling Stone, Spin, Daily Variety and the influential Lefsetz Letter.
On May 20, 2008, the duo was honored with the Icon Award during BMI’s 56th annual Pop Awards. The award has previously gone to the Bee Gees, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Ray Davies, Carlos Santana and Dolly Parton.

The Presets on tour

ON THE WEST COAST Remaining Tour Dates Almost Sold Out
FRI 10/3 – The Glass House - Pomona, CA
SAT 10/4 - Detour Festival, Los Angeles, CA
SUN 10/5 - Mezzanine - San Francisco, CA
It's been quite the year for electro-pop pioneers, The Presets. Julian Hamilton (vox/keys) and Kim Moyes (drums/programming) have dominated charts and airwaves the world over with the definitive dance record of the summer, their sophomore album Apocalypso.
In their native Australia, The Presets are the highest selling local act for 2008. Outselling the likes of Madonna and Mariah, their #1 album Apocalypso has spent over sixteen weeks in the Aussie top ten and sales are rapidly approaching in excess of 100,000. Add this to over 40,000 sales of their single My People and 30,000 of This Boy’s In Love, and subsequent album releases in over 25 countries, it’s unquestionable that The Presets have emerged this year as heavyweight serious contenders, an unstoppable force on the international dance music scene.
This summer has seen The Presets play packed-to-the-rafters and raving arena-sized venues on a nightly basis. Internationally renowned festivals such as the UK’s V Festival, Glastonbury, T in The Park, Norway’s Øya Festival, France’s Pantiero Festival and a triumphant headline slot at Australia’s Splendour in The Grass, have witnessed audiences blown away by the band’s electric stage performance, as addictively compelling as it is intense.
Now, all hail, The Presets are touring America!
This fall Julian and Kim continue their sonic crusade on the American music loving masses. Hell-bent on converting the most stoic of rock music fans into pop-possessed dancing maniacs, the band will traipse around the country for 30-odd dates of non-stop party with co-headliners and Modular labelmates Cut Copy.
To celebrate their return to North America, The Presets release Talk Like That, the third single from Apocalypso. Flexing the melodic muscle of a hyperactive Pet Shop Boys, and injecting their own high-octane Presets rush, Talk Like That is a tense exercise in drama and lunacy, set atop a bed of haunting church organs and stuttering vocal samples. This dance-pop gem comes with a much-blogged stunning video courtesy of the enfants terribles of music videos, Jonas and Francois (who have smashed it for the likes of JT and Madonna, Kanye West and Justice).
Shot in a disused mansion on the outskirts of Paris, Talk Like That features French model and it-girl Valentine Fillol-Cordier precociously stomping and swaying through the building, systematically smashing guitars and amplifiers in search of synths, as if possessed by the powers that be the voice of Hamilton and the beats of Moyes.
Talk Like That is indeed one of the most infectious tracks you'll hear all year. Come witness it, and the rest of the gargantuan Apocalypso live experience this fall in a US venue near you.
New video for Talk Like That (directed by famous Jonas & Francois).
Remixes supporting this single come courtesy of “Jence” Moelle (Digitalism), Dave Spoon, Felix, Optimo and Miami Horror.
