Los Angeles indie rock quartet LA Font released a new MP3 for "Onshore." The track is available to post and share via Noisey or the band's SoundCloud page. With "Onshore" the members of LA Font take a wry look at a relationship in decay with the style of some of indie rock's heroes. With its big sing-along hook, "Onshore" is essentially a pop song, but it gets an idiosyncratic twist from singer Danny Bobbe's sideways lyrics - "loose lips sink relationships / bailing out water on the Titanic / what's it like at the bottom of the sea? / you become friends with Leo DiCaprio" - plus its brilliantly tipsy guitar work and windows-down groove. The track is a sure sign that songwriter Bobbe and bandmates Jon Perry (guitar), Greg Katz (bass) and Harlow Rodriguez (drums) have hit their stride on their forthcoming full-length, Diving Man, due for release later this year. You can draw a line to LA Font from likeminded predecessors Pavement, Built to Spill and The Replacements through contemporaries like Father John Misty, King Tuff and Ty Segall.
The quartet is often compared to Pavement for Bobbe's sincere but barbed lyrics and the band's scrappy garage rock arrangements. Bobbe's charismatic, sneering live performance persona has also earned the band recognition, with the L.A. Times writing that he is "a frontman worth the cost of admission alone."
The band's first album The American Leagues, was self-released in October 2010 and sold out on vinyl. The 7" single "Sharks" followed in July 2011 on boutique label Sister City Records. The band recently finished a full-length to release in 2013.
