Friends/ Family Dance Festival presented by Nancy Evans Dance Theater will feature ten local dance companies over two evenings of performances at Porticos Art Space in Pasadena. The ten dance companies represented will be Cornerspoon, Darnell Dance Works, Datugan Dance Theatre, Nancy Evans Dance Theatre, Merge Dance Theatre, Louise Reichlin & Dancers, Robert Salas' Movement Theatre Co-Lab, SoleVita Dance Company, Tom Tsai and Watson Dance.
Nancy Evans Dance Theatre was established in September of 2009 in Pasadena, California, under the Artistic Direction of Nancy Evans Doede, and had its inaugural performances in June of 2010 in evenings of original choreography entitled Works 2011: A Dance Collaborative, in association with Paradigm Dance Theatre. The success of the first season of performances led to a 2010-2011 season that included performances at the 4th Annual Pasadena Dance Festival, “Standing On The Edge”, “Concordance”, as producer of and performers in “Friends/Family”, and Works 2011: A Dance Collaborative, their second concert series in conjunction with Paradigm Dance Theatre.
“The "theme" of "Friends/Family" is twofold,” says Artistic Director of NEDT, Nancy Evans Doede, “It’s celebrating work from our company (Family) and our guests (Friends), and also celebrating this new dance space.” She is referring of course to Porticos Art Space in Pasadena where they are the resident dance company. On the festival itself, Nancy explains, “This is the second "Friends/Family" that we've done, the first one being two years ago, but in a much smaller space and with invited guests from companies we knew. This is an exciting step for us because we've opened up to companies that we're not familiar with as well as some that we are, in an effort to expand both ours and the community at large's awareness and appreciation for the work that is being produced in Los Angeles.” Nancy continues, “Being a small producing company ourselves, we are acutely aware of the challenges that face all of us to not only have our work seen, but to have the opportunity to interact with one another in a non-competitive fashion. This is our new space, and we're very excited about it, and want to share it and make it known to the dance community that it is an available resource for them, and to bring excellent artistic performances to the immediate residential community that has been more than willing to support our efforts. Any success we have will benefit all of us.”
